The Musselwhite mine, located in northwestern Ontario, Canada, has been an underground narrow-vein gold producer since the spring of 1997. As an exploration project at the feasibility stage, much effort was undertaken to generate a geostatistical resource model that would integrate the orebodyÆs geological features, as well as the controls on mineralisation. Today as an operating mine producing over 200 000 ounces of gold per year, reconciliation studies of the tonnes and grades treated at the mill, with the feasibility model, for longer time periods, and with the grade control models, for shorter time periods, show results that are in good agreement. It was clearly demonstrated with the reconciliation to production, that the key to good reconciliation remains in the proper selection and application of the geological resource estimation method. The application of a grade interpolation technique capable of capturing threedimensionally pertinent geological features, as well as accounting for spatial grade continuity, proved to be successful in the predictability of tonnage and grade at the Musselwhite mine. Along with good mine practices, this approach, which was carried through to the operation, has produced excellent reconciliation results. The ongoing reconciliation studies at Musselwhite allow for a constant revision of the grade estimation strategy. In return, this optimisation process adds value by raising the accuracy level of production expectations. As this is an evolving practice at the mine site, further implementation developments are recommended to integrate these reconciliation procedures on a more regular basis.

Epithermal deposits have been defined as the lower temperature end of a spectrum of hydrothermal mineral deposits and are inferred to have formed near the EarthÆs surface. The preservation of an epithermal gold deposit in an Archaean craton is rather problematic, especially when such deposits form clusters or groups as reported for the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons. For two of the better studied examples of epithermal gold deposits in these cratons, Becher and Wiluna, the evidence that they formed near the Earth surface is non-diagnostic, and the epithermal origin appears uncertain. Despite the simplicity of the original definition, there have been numerous errors in classifying epithermal gold deposits. It is suggested that these errors are primarily due to poor criteria defining the group as there is limited evidence of poor observational science being the cause. The criteria being used to recognise epithermal gold deposits include tectonic setting, ore element suite and quartz vein textures. None of these are diagnostic of epithermal deposits and their link back to the original low pressure-temperature definition of the class is tenuous. There has been definition creep over time as new observations on potential epithermal gold deposits become accommodated within a flexible definition. There is some urgency establishing and then using criteria to reliably identify epithermal deposits. Distinction of epithermal gold from weathered gold deposits is an important step. The bulk of the worldÆs production of iron ore is processed into steel. The needs of the steel industry therefore demand a high exploration and exploitation of iron ore. One trend within the industry has been a great increase in the demand of iron ore and this is reflected in an increase in world steel production from 1955 to date. In addition to the high demand for steel, is ChinaÆs high appetite to feed its steel industry. It is therefore important that the iron ore potential of Ghana is showcased for eventual exploitation by potential investors to meet this enormous demand for the commodity in the industry globally. Ghana has three main iron deposits of potential industrial and commercial importance. They are: Shieni sedimentary iron ore (reserves: 1.270 X 106 metric tonnes), Pudo titaniferous-magnetiferous iron ore and the Opon-Mansi lateritic iron ore deposits. The Opon-Mansi iron ore deposit occurs in the Western region of Ghana. The ore deposits are located on top of the range of 15 hills, which extend over a distance of 24 km from Opon-valley, south of the Western region to Dunkwa. The area has an estimated 147 Mt of iron deposit, with Fe content of 52.5 per cent. This paper looks at the iron ore potential of Ghana and how it is capable of attracting potential investors to exploit this valuable mineral for global consumption.

During the last two decades, restrictions on access to land for mineral exploration and development in Australia have intensified. State and Federal legislation relating to Aboriginal land rights, national parks, marine parks, wilderness areas and other conservation areas, the surface rights of farmers in New South Wales and Western Australia, national, State and world heritage, urban developments and acquisition of land by governments for other purposes have all placed limits on mineral exploration and mine development activity. More than 20% of Australia's land area is now either unavailable for mineral exploration or available only under severe constraints. Access to this land is denied at a significant economic cost to the Australian community. There have been few attempts to quantify this cost. More importantly these restrictions have developed on an ad hoc basis promoted by single interest government departments often with little regard for rational land use planning. The mining industry has embraced the community's conservation ethic and accepted that conservation areas should be set aside and that within those areas mineral activity should be restricted. In some cases the restrictions on exploration near areas of outstanding scientific, historical, archeological or scenic importance may amount to an effective prohibition. The industry has vigorously opposed the exclusion of mineral activity in conservation areas on purely emotive grounds, unsupported by scientific evidence and in disregard of land use potential, consideration of multiple use potential or consultation with existing or potential land users likely to be effected.

Transport technology has produced social changes since the invention of the wheel five millenna ago when man was freed from the need to expend large amounts of energy to move goods and people. Further impetus came with the Industrial Revolution when mechanical power producing devices were applied to land and-water transport. This leap, together with the application to air transport has caused enormous social changes in our way of life. The state of technological advancement of transport modes has dictated to a large degree the develop- ment of Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is suggested that we should not make advances for technology's sake but examine the real needs of the users of transport and ensure that the un- necessary costs are not incurred. The transporting techniques for the ore, waste and slurries used by Bougainville Copper in Papua New Guinea are, in general, quite conven- tional but the scale of operations and the location has modified some modes. in particular the soft' overburden and concentrates were slurried for trans- port and the lack of experience in humid climates restricted the choice of the mine haulage truck. The near future of the transport. industry is seen as an expansion in equipment sizes but the suggestion is made that we need to examine more than the economic and technical aspects; it is necessary for the social con- sequences of our actions to bear examination by outside opinion

Excavation engineering involves complex processes for primary and secondary extraction of materials. The shovel excavators bear varying mechanical energy input and stress loading across the working bench during excavation. These varying mechanical energy input and stress loading effects cause significant wear and tear and fatigue failure in equipment components. These effects further result in unplanned downtimes, reduced efficiency and high production costs. In addition, the mechanical and electrical control systems must be operated in efficient profiles to generate maximum outputs and efficiency from these excavators. Efficient technologies are therefore required to solve these problems in order to reduce production costs and increase efficiency. In this paper, the authors develop a rigorous simulator for a hydraulic shovel in a surface mining environment. The finite element model is used to capture the stress profile within the shovel components during excavation, such as, the bucket, stick and boom assemblies. The profiles are classified into normal, critical and extreme ranges, with appropriate corrective measures to avoid extreme loading conditions. The loading capability of shovel excavators can be examined by assessing its structural strength against all possible maximum loads working on the equipment. The dynamic model is used to define efficient profiles of the critical structural components of hydraulic shovels during digging operation. This assessment is used to locate the maximum possible loads and the critical sections of the structures. The method presented in this paper forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for efficient shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

Coal Mining in India had been confined in the past primarily to two or three coalfields. Unscientific mining has led to huge degradation of land including massive subsidence of strata and disturbances of water tables to a wide extent. This has caused problems not only in flooding of mines from surface water but also in further planning of the surface drainage for current mining activities. Now, therefore, surface hydrology and land-use potentialities of the area have been endangered inflicting severe damage to the overall environment and ecology of the area. The paper Discusses certain investigative aspects of the problems highlighted as above in one of the coalfields, and encompasses mainly the following areas : 1) Quantitative estimation of the damage already done to the natural surface drainage system. For this purpose damage to topography and drainage for the last fifty years have been made out through the aerial photographs and topographic map sheets 2) Analysis and comparison of different states of such photographs are carried through to indicate the extent of damage to the hydrological conditions inducing undesirable changes in its land-use pattern. Based on the analysis, concrete suggestions are made to restore the water drainage system which will be most suitable for future mining in the area containing high grade coal. The design and planning of the drainage system is based on the total system approach including the cost benefit analysis as well as hydrological considerations.

Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

The Mt Whaleback orebody is in a complex geological regime. A good understanding of geological structure is essential during the design and implementation stages. The amount of information on the rock-mass condition available at the design stage is considerably limited. It is essential to validate the rock-mass properties used in the design during implementation. It is important to achieve integrity of the final pit wall during development and to maintain the integrity until the end of its designed life for safe and economical extraction of ore. The original geological model is updated by way of on-going detailed geological face mapping. Original design is reassessed and is modified based on any significant variations to the previously evaluated geotechnical conditions. Information gathered during design implementation provide tools for effective management of the pit walls. Controlled blasting techniques are employed in the final limits blasting. Presplit blasting is used in most limits blasts. Presplit helps to maintain the integrity of the wall by venting excessive gases from the limits blast. This helps to reduce bedding dilation by gas penetration. Also, it helps to define the design batter for the operators for final batter trimming. Pyritic shale needs special attention during blasting due to its reacting nature. Cablebolting is applied in selective areas to secure small-scale potential instabilities. During the development phase, pit wall monitoring instruments are installed. These instruments are used to monitor the performance of the wall during and after excavation of the slope.

Although the terms "pipe" and "tube" are normally considered synonymous, a distinction is often drawn, the former term being applied to the hot finished product and the latter to cold finished material. It is, considered that the title of this paper includes hot finished seamless, and continuous-weld pipe, cold drawn seamless tubing, and electrically welded tubing.The continuous-weld process will be reviewed first, passing to the various methods of seamless manufacturing, which, in addition to meeting the demand for hot finished seamless pipe, also supply the raw material for cold drawn tubing, the manufacture of which will then be described. Finally the electric resistance-weld process will be Considered, and the paper will conclude with a brief review of the processes described and trends in present-day manufacture.CONTINUOUS-WELD PIPEThe raw material for this process is delivered in the form of coiled, hot finished, strip steel, generally referred to as "skelp". The end of one coil is electrically buttwelded to that of'the next, so forming an unbroken strip. Daily geological mapping of the Panguna porphyry copper/gold system since mining began in 1971 has provided a good basis for resource estimation and mine planning as the mine and estimation methods have advanced. Geology defined during evaluation and early mining has been substantiated and many smaller features have been better defined or identified. Breccias, pebble dykes, major structures and location of lithology contacts important to short term planning and long term pit slope stability have been defined. Correlation of copper and gold with breccia zones is quite striking and was not fully appre- ciated at the end of evaluation. Pit mapping geology, and diamond drill geology and assays, are now routinely added to a Geological Data base on computer, which forms the major geological data base for modelling the deposit. Geology from diamond drill logging, updated by pit mapping, and assays from diamond drilling updated by blast hole assays have been incorporated in a 45 bench deep 486 000 block computer based block model which forms the basis for long and short term planning. The introduction of pre-concentration scre- ening, based on the distribution of mineralisat- ion and fracturing, puts more emphasis on the definition of grade distribution at low concent- ration and on structures in the rock. Geostatistics is now used for resource estimation and has produced acceptable estim- ates. but these need to be refined, particularly in peripheral, low grade areas of the deposit.

A small-charge rock excavation method based upon the Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technique has been demonstrated to be capable of excavating the hardest of rocks. The PCF technique involves drilling shallow holes in the rock which are then pressurised at the bottom by a propellant charge device. A controlled fracture is initiated at the hole bottom comer and propagates in such a manner as to excavate the rock at an energy efficiency three to five times better than explosives. Due to the low flyrock velocities and airblast pressures realised with PCF breakage, the method may be used in close proximity to equipment and personnel and is thus ideally suited for integration into continuous hard rock excavation systems. Over the past 18 months full-scale testing of the PCF method has been carried out in mines in the US and Australia. This testing has utilised a 76 mm diameter gas injector for hole pressurisation and employed propellant charges ranging from 80 to 320 gm. In addition to extensive data on rock excavation performance, data on ground motion, dust, carbon monoxide and air blast have been obtained. These data indicate that none of the parameters associated with PCF breakage are detrimental to the development of PCF-based, continuous-excavation machines. Machines employing the PCF method may range from simple single-boom machines for secondary breakage and small precision-blasting jobs to integrated systems with several booms, continuous mucking capabilities and ground-support equipment for drifting and tunnelling.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.

The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

Following initial plant scale work on the development and performance of 'spray' oil lances, a full scale room temperature model of the blowpipe-tuyere region of a blast furnace was built to study the basic aerodynamic features of auxiliary fuel injection procedures. Mobilwax 2305 was used as a substitute for Bunker C oil fuel in view of its similar physical properties and the fact that the atomised droplets could be frozen in flight and size, distribution analyses made for various operating procedures. It was shown that secondary atomisation processes far outweighed the importance of any primary atomisation procedures in determining mean Sauter Diameters particularly at high windrates typical of current blast furnace technology. It was also found that good spray dispersions across the blow pipe could only be obtaind for liquid fuels and that the lateral rate of spray dispersion was substantially enhanced by primary atomisation procedures. Mean particle diameters of sprays were found to be predictable on the basis of elementary stability theory and fell within the size range necessary for good combustion at all liquid fuel rates studied. The possible effects of high oil injection rates on flooding phenomena in the furnace bosh were considered. Comparisons show that high oil rates can lead to significant increases in the hanging factor (e.g. 'V 10% at 135 kg oil/thm) owing to increased gas flow rates/thm resulting from the presence of hydrogen.

The purpose of the present communication is to put on record the discovery, in October, 1916, in the Howqua district, of a new locality for the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in Victoria, and to give a preliminary description of its characters and geological occurrence. Owing to the great use of superphosphates for agricultural purposes in recent years in Australia, search has been stimulated for the discovery of local and workable supplies of phosphatic rocks. Phosphorus is an element very widely distributed in igneous rocks, usually in the form of the mineral apatite, and also occurs in sedimentary rocks and in soils as a detrital constituent. Under these conditions of occurrence, however, the amount of P 205 present in a rock or soil seldom approaches, and very rarely exceeds, 1 %. Very occasionally it occurs in such a concentrated form as to constitute workable deposits. In such cases they are usually of organic origin. The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

he Wyalong goldfields were discovered in September, 1893, Messrs. Neeld and Sons, owners of the principal mine, being the pioneer prospectors. During the earliest days of the field the ore was sent to Barmedman, a distance of eighteen miles, for treatment at a battery there. The field rapidly increased in importance, and it was not long before a public battery was established on the spot. After some considerable quantity of ore was treated by this process, it became apparent that battery treatment was quite unsuitable for the richer ores, involving, as it did, considerable loss in the tailings. Recognition of this fact led to the erection, in 1895, of plants by the Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, owned by Mr. Walter Sully, for treatment by their processes; followed, at a later date, by Messrs. Neeld and Sons Chlorination Works. The Wyalong Chlorination and Cyanide Works, after a delay of twelve months in the erection of their plants, have since catered continuously up to the present time for the requirements of the field.Their plant consists of a No. 3 Gates' rock·breaker, a revolving dryer, a No. 5 Krupp mill, revolving roasting furnace with finishing hearth, two chlorination vats of 20 tons capacity each, "nine cyanide vats of 30 to 100 tons capacity, two Wheeler pans and three chlorine generators. The ores are purchased outright on assay at a fixed scale of charges, and treated by the owner of the works on his own account.
