The concept of large trucks underground has been around for some time. While the road train concept is gaining momentum, there are underground mining applications where these trucks have not been suitable. Unfortunately few of the ægreenfieldsÆ projects that are most suited to the road train concept have come æon lineÆ since the underground road train was first introduced to Australia in 2001 so that the trucks have generally been adapted to existing operations. As at December 2004, there were 17 road trains operating underground in Australia, one being rebuilt and one under construction. This paper addresses the necessity for the mining industry to have an integrated ore transport system that starts at the underground load haul dump unit (LHD) in the stope production area and finishes at the crusher feed at the processing plant. Chute and orepass designs are investigated, as well as feeders to determine the best load and haul system for large-scale trucking. The paper also discusses potential developments in the large truck scene. The paper highlights the cost and productivity gains by introducing large trucks and associated integrated ore transport systems underground. While 400 vertical metres was seen as the limit of vertical hauling in the 1970s, one kilometre is a common discussion point for trucking limits today. In real terms the cost of underground trucking (including ownership costs) has decreased from $1.50 - $2.00/t.km in the mid-1990s to $1.00 - $1.20/t.km at present.

University education in Australia is changing, driven by greater market orientation, reduced funding available per student, especially in the higher-cost minerals industry disciplines, and the call for more flexible delivery of subjects and courses to meet changing lifestyles and expectations. The opportunity exists for a true partnership to develop between industry, government and academia that will reshape minerals education in Australia and secure the future supply of the specialists industry needs to maintain international competitiveness. If this partnership does not emerge, it is anticipated that AustraliaÆs somewhat fragmented and unstable higher education system, especially in the disciplines of particular relevance to the minerals industry, will be put under further pressure so decreasing its effectiveness to produce quality graduates. The Minerals Council of Australia in 1998 published æBack from the BrinkÆ, a discussion paper which proposed strategies to build a world class minerals tertiary education system in Australia. Those strategies are now being implemented collaboratively with principal emphasis on the disciplines of mining engineering, metallurgy and earth science and as far as process is concerned, on the necessity to æcooperate to competeÆ. For metallurgy, the challenge is to integrate more closely undergraduate teaching with the existing world-class research centres and to link the tertiary institutions in such a manner that the strengths of all components are harnessed and then made available nationally in major population centres and at remote sites where appropriate. For industry the challenge is to build effective partnerships with the academic community that will enable and assist the agreed course of action to take place.

Significant developments in future mining systems, technology and best practices are emerging that are driven by issues relating to human resources, competitiveness, environmental and social responsibility, within the dynamics of globalisation. It is proposed that the definition of the role and attributes of the mining engineer in the mine life cycle needs to be viewed more holistically in the face of increasingly more diverse and complex responsibilities. These developments are motivating the need to consider a fresh approach to mining education and training at all levels for industry. A growing diversity and complexity of professional responsibilities is extending the mining engineerÆs broadly based skill set and reinforcing the need to play a central role within increasingly interdisciplinary teams. On the other hand, the imminent new technologies that will transform the mining process are prompting the assumption that more focused and specialised skill sets will be needed. A way forward is suggested that would first define a blueprint for the future mine, as an attempt to characterise the systems architecture, processes and organisation of the next generation mine. This can be the basis for assessing the nature of the workforce and distribution of responsibilities, from which can be inferred the skills and training requirements. In the context of the mining engineer, the paper explores how understanding such future requirements will enable more proactive development of a strategy for educational development. The paper then concludes by considering issues and lessons learned from some recent mining educational development initiatives underway in Australia and Canada that are shaping significant change.

This paper is essentially an address, rather than a detailed presentation of facts, because the third edition of `Nuclear Electricity - An Australian Perspective' has just been completed and will be available for the seminar. That 96-page booklet contains a lot more information than The AusIMM would be prepared to print in the seminar proceedings. Hence I have kept this paper brief, and ask readers to obtain a (free) copy of Nuclear Electricity at the seminar or from The AusIMM. It can be read as a supplement to the paper (or vice versa). According to one of Australia's well known critics of nuclear power, Professor Ian Lowe, `the pro-nuclear lobby's predictions of the future use of nuclear energy .... have been regularly and consistently wrong by large amounts, always overestimating the future demand for uranium" (Aust. Society, April 1989). While I do not accept this as a bald statement applying to all those in favour of increased use of nuclear power, there is sufficient truth in it for it to be credible. Certainly in the 1950s and the 1960s, when the new technology for producing controlled power from atomic fission was first being commercialised, there were some very exaggerated projections of the role of nuclear power. Many people thought that it would take over from fossil fuel fired electricity generation in much the same way as the motor vehicle took over from horse-drawn transport. And these early projections were not simply concerned with electric power generation, they included excavating harbours and digging canals with nuclear explosives.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

In a previous paper in these Proceedings(l) it was shown from a study of the bore'logs and analyses then available, that the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley areas show progressive changes in composition with increase of stratigraphic depth, equivalent to a rise in rank: These changes appear as:(i) An increase in ultimate carbon and hydrogen, calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, and(ii) An increase in calorific value, calculated on the, same basis, each of the order of 1% per 100 ft. of depth, and(iii) A decrease in moisture content of the order of 0.5% to 1.0% per 100 ft. of depth. The decrease in moisture content was found to be less regular than the other changes. In some bores the moisture content remained more or less constant throughout a single seam, or fluctuated slightly, decreasing stepwise on passage to the seam below.It was noted that individual analyses within a bore showed irregular fluctuations, tending to mask the general trend in composition change. This was particularly so for the moisture content, which had been determined for 10 ft. lengths of core, whereas the other components were determined for 50 ft. lengths of core. Averaging of the moisture contents over 50 ft. lengths reduced the masking effects of these irregularities. The suggestion was made that these irregularities arose from variations in the relative proportions of pollen, resin, wood (lignite) and woody attritus composing the core. Removal of gangue minerals from ilmenite concentrates can beaccomplished by relatively low temperature roasting in controlled gasatmospheres to selectively enhance the magnetic separationcharacteristics of the ilmenite. At roasting temperatures below 800¦C the magnetising reactions are often not consistent with phase equilibria considerations. Metastable phases can nucleate and control the roasting products. In weathered ilmenites the phase assemblages and microstructures in the altered ilmenite grains can influence the roasting reactions. In this paper we give an overview of the phase chemistry of chemically weathered ilmenites and of metastable phases formed by low temperature roasting. We also report the results of roast experiments conducted in a neutral gas atmosphere. Major increases in magnetic properties after short roasting times at low temperatures were obtained for a range of ilmenite concentrates. For example heating a secondary ilmenite concentrate from Western Australia for 15 minutes in nitrogen at 600¦C gave an increase in the three kilogauss magnetic fraction from three to 92 wt per cent. The solid state phase changes accompanying the inert atmosphereroasts were characterised by combining elemental analyses withquantitative phase analyses of the ilmenite concentrates and their roast products. It was found that the phase reaction that is principally responsible for the increase in the magnetic properties of weathered ilmenites involves a transformation of disordered ferrous-containing pseudorutile to an ordered ilmenite-hematite solid solution containing typically ten to 35 mole per cent of the hematite component. Examples are given of the application of the inert atmosphere roast to effect separations of ilmenite from gangue minerals.

Alcoa World Alumina AustraliaÆs Huntly and Willowdale bauxite mines are located in the Darling Range of South Western Australia, which places their operations within PerthÆs surface water supply catchments. These catchments supply Perth with its highest quality drinking water. With the decreasing rainfall trend of recent years catchment yields to water supply reservoirs have reduced to such an extent that water use restrictions were necessary in Perth for 2001, 2002 and 2003. Protection of catchment water quality and water use conservation are crucial issues for AlcoaÆs operations within the Darling Range. Alcoa has been conducting bauxite mining activities in water supply catchments since the mid-1960s. During that time Alcoa has worked closely with the relevant State Government water and environmental agencies to ensure that its operations do not adversely impact catchment water yield and water quality. Monitoring and research have shown that Alcoa has the necessary environmental management systems in place to ensure it can continue to operate in a sustainable manner within water supply catchments. AlcoaÆs mines reduced the volume of water taken from public water supply catchments by 24 per cent in 2002, compared with 2000. This success has had an added benefit; Alcoa does not need to develop a new water source for its Huntly Mine. The conservation measures implemented to reduce water use include: increasing water recycling, using chemical additives for haul road dust suppression, conducting water audits, reducing water demand, monitoring water use, promoting water use targets and training staff in water conservation.

The problem of recovery of cobalt products from poorly oxidised nickel ores (Kempirsaisk deposit) and pyrite concentrates with a low content of cobalt (Sokolovsk-Sarbaisky deposit) has not been solved to the present time in Kazakstan. The balance reserves of nickel ore of the Kempirsaisky deposit make up more than 35 million tons with a nickel content of 1.13 per cent and cobalt content of 0.05 per cent; besides there are 110 millions tons of out-balance ores (Anon, 1995). In a tailing dump of Sokolovsk-Sarbaisk Mining and Productional Association more than 320 million tons of tailings of wet magnetic separation have accumulated, which contain 7.2 per cent of sulphur, 0.022 per cent of cobalt, 0.012 per cent of nickel, 0.094 per cent of copper, 0.079 per cent of zinc, 16.45 per cent of iron, and from which a high quality pyrite concentrate car) he separated through flotation, containing 48 - 50 per cent of sulphur, 44.15 per cent of iron, 0.141 per cent of cobalt, 0.07 per cent of nickel, and 0.10 per cent of copper. The well-known technological flow charts for cobalt and nickel recovery from the tailings of sulphide-magnetite ores dressing (to give pyrite concentrate) and from oxidised nickel ores, are not profitable at the existing prices for metals, but are not worthless and require significant capital investments for the realisation of their value. The flow chart `sulphate roasting - leaching - solution processing' is used widely for combined processing of cobalt-containing pyrite ores and concentrates.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is modelling the liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. Several researchers have noted the similarity of the liberation characteristics for a selected size fraction of particulate material, whether the fraction comes from a coarse material, such as the product from a jaw crusher, or a more finely ground material, such as the product from a ball mill. In most cases these observations were reported as an aside and were not the main focus of the published work. This observed behaviour has the potential to be a useful tool for modelling the particle characteristics in mineral comminution and separation circuits, particularly as we move towards the development of multi-component models. However, before the behaviour can be used widely we need to understand which ore types follow the observed pattern and which do not. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11 km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River in the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (eg Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the æTechnical FeasibilityÆ phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralisation/ precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru SA, and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the AMD could be sufficiently treated to be potentially used to supplement the drinking water supply of Lima, and for agricultural (eg irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for implementation of the full-scale treatment facility at the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

Although developed primarily for sintering tantalum, the unit to be described can be used to heat-treat metals in the form ofa bar, wire or strip, by passing a current through them. The upper temperature limit with this type of heating is the melting point of the metal being heated.The unit was designed for vacuum work, but. various gases can be used if required.Briefly, the vacuum sintering furnace consists of a bell which is counter-balanced and may be lowered onto the brass base plate which holds the electrodes. A rubber ring seal is used for vacuum work. The lower flexible grips are bolted to the brass base plate which is at earth 'potential, while the other electrode passes through the plate by way of an electrically insulated vacuum seal. This upper electrode, the height of which can be altered as desired, the lower grips, and the bell are water cooled. The vacuum line to the pumps and a line to the vacuum gauges also lead from the base plate. The more important sections of the unit are described below.THE BELLThe unit was designed so that the bell could be lifted clear of the base plate and the electrodes, thus facilitating adjustment of the latter and the mounting of the specimen to be heated. The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop blast designs for the control of fragmentation and rock displacement and the reduction of overall mining costs. This Bureau experiment, a program of 25 reduced-scale blasts conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla's experimental quarry, determined the effects on fragmentation of changes in burden, spacing, explosive diameter, and stemming-explosive length. Combined with previous work at this experimental quarry examining air gap, delay, and decoupling effects, this experiment provided a data base of over 50 shots. The fragmented rock, 1000 to 3000 kg from each 3- to 4-hole blast in the 1 m bench of massive dolomite, was completely screened to assess fragmentation. The explosive used for all the tests was extra dynamite initiated by seismic caps fired from a sequential blasting machine with delays of 5.2- to 13-ms/m of burden. Empirical equations were developed which predicted the effect of shot design parameters on the fragmentation. These formulas predicted the average fragment size of each of the 25-shots to within 13 percent. For spacing to burden ratios of 1, 1.4 and 2, there were optimum burden to explosive diameter ratios (B/de) of 30, 26 and 20, respectively. Decreasing the B/d. ratio beyond these levels resulted in little or no reduction in the average size. For B/de ratios above these levels the average size increased but, at least a 15 percent reduction in the average size results when the shot design parameters are optimized.

Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. Up until June 1988, Mount Thorley Coal Handling and Preparation Plant disposed of tailings by two methods. Approximately half of the plant tailings was mechanically dewatered by solid bowl centrifuges mixed with plant reject and was subsequently disposed in mine overburden spoils; the remainder was pumped to tailings ponds. Both future mine planning and environmental constraints could not allow for the long term construction of more tailings ponds so, following evaluation of available dewatering technology, belt press filters were selected for the treatment of tailings in excess of the capacity of the existing solid bowl centrifuges. Commission of the four 2.5 metre wide belt press filters soon showed that marked differences in performance were experienced when treating different coal seams. Further analysis showed that the coal tailings from different seams were quite different in terms of clay mineralogy, and these differences could be correlated with varying degrees of filter performance. Poor filter performance was experienced with coal tailings rich in sodium montmorillinite clays. A number of variables were investigated including in-line mechanical mixing of flocculant and feed slurry, cation exchange reagents such as gypsum, and upstream addition of cationic flocculant. In order to achieve satisfactory performance on the worst tailings, a combination of all of the above was required. In this paper, the reasons for selection of belt press filters and the program of investigations and testwork required to arrive at satisfactory belt press filter performance for the treatment of troublesome bentonitic rich tailings are discussed.

It is shown that coke has a major influence on the pattern of operation and on the aerodynamics of the blast furnace and that the physical and chemical characteristics of coke, at each stage in the furnace, determine its ability to satisfy requirements for iron production and coke economy. Analysis of coke sampled from operating furnaces is compared with furnace behaviour. The available data suggests the importance of segregation, strength, size change and chemical degradation of coke on furnace performance. Correlations are presented for coke breakdown ratio as a function of coke rate and hearth diameter which shows that breakdown increases with hearth diameter and with decreasing coke rate. It is also shown that the Micum tests do not reflect the coke strength in a predictable way and that solution reactions appear to play an important role in giving rise to a pitting effect on the cell walls of the coke with the resultant deterioration in coke properties. The catalytic effect of activating substances, such as alkalis, is noted and results are presented which show the effect of carbon solution on the coke strength. The importance of coke in the stack and in the bosh is discussed and flooding results are presented for BSC furnaces which show the probable driving limits for the furnaces considered. It is also shown that coke sampled from different tuyeres in a furnace gives quite different flooding limits. Other applications of the coke test work at BSC are also noted and the relevant objectives listed.

Wire ropes are one of the most heavily used components in a dragline. They are subjected to harsh conditions during the regular usage of a dragline in a mining operation. Hoist ropes are subjected to fatigue due to the cyclic nature of load handling as well as due to rope bending over the sheaves and the drum under load. This leads to wire breaks due to fatigue. Accumulation of a number of wire breaks close to each other can have a detrimental effect on the rope. Furthermore, to allow for the increasing demand for higher load capacity coupled with the inconvenience of having very large ropes, the factor of safety is often compromised, which increases the wear rate. Drag ropes are also subjected to heavy loads. More importantly, they are allowed to drag along the rough mine surface subjecting them to external physical abrasion. This makes the life of drag ropes one of the lowest among those used in a dragline. Suspension and IBS ropes are relatively uniformly loaded during their regular usage although they need to withstand dynamic load cycles as well as bending. Hence they tend to last for a number of years on average. The paper analyses the wear types and their severity of each of these rope applications, and suggests methods to determine rope wear rates and the resulting rope life. The paper further gives suggestions for good operating and maintenance practice that can extend the rope life and help reduce the large expenditure associated with every major rope change in a dragline.

Atlas Copco is one of the worldÆs leading providers of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2009). Furthermore, the company spans 160 markets and held 34 000 employees at the end of 2008. The company is organised under three ætechniquesÆ whereby the Construction and Mining TechniqueÆs business division is located within +rebro, Sweden. This paper is aimed at briefly facilitating information on how the company and more specifically, the Construction and Mining Technique is run. Also, by sharing my experiences, this paper is intended to encourage and motivate students currently studying for a degree relevant to the minerals industry, to apply for this extremely beneficial scholarship. Through a number of presentations relating to the various divisions, products and aftermarket services of the company, I came to realise that Atlas Copco extends beyond simply selling equipment suitable for the mining and civil industries. This tour through Sweden also contained highlights of visiting the Underground Rock Excavation factory, Surface Drilling Equipment factory and Secoroc divisions. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a tour of the LKAB mine in Kiruna. In addition, time was allocated to less industry related activities, and I was able to go dog sledging, sip vodka cocktails out of ice glasses at the Ice Hotel and enjoy traditional Swedish foods of moose and reindeer. Most important and memorable to me; however, was the ability for employees of Atlas Copco to speak of the company and their products with such passion and enthusiasm, which truly made this a motivational and unforgettable experience.
