In 1939 at the annual meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, held at Canberra, a paper was contributed by E. de C: Clarke and H. A. Ellist in which a plea was made for more "facts" concerning metasomatism near ore-bodies in Western Australia. From time to time writers here, and in other parts of the world, have discussed the alterations in wall rocks of various reefs and lodes, but little has yet been attempted in the matter of accumulation of quantitative data, both chemical and mineralogical, and in the correlation and comparative study of this data. Such a detailed comparative study is needed to determine the economic value of a practical application of our accumulated knowledge of the phenomena of metasomatism.When in 1939 the opportunity offered for an examination of the core from 4 bores recently put down by the Big Bell Mines Ltd., to explore the ore-body of the Corinthian G.M. 10 miles N.W. of Southern Cross, Western Australia it was hoped that some small beginnings might be made of an accumulation of comparative and quantitative data regarding the metasomatism of the wall rock immediately adjacent to this ore-body.By the courtesy of the Big Bell Mines Ltd., the core from the 4 bores was delivered to Survey Headquarters, Perth;in the middle of June, 1939 and copies of assay plans of part of the underground workings at Corinthian, and of the results of assays of the bore cores, were also supplied by the management of the above company.It was not, however, until March, 1940, that it was 'found possible to investigate the core. At that time the writer's colleague, Mr. R. S. Matheson, conducted a: megascopic examination of all the bores and selected material from two of these for possible future chemical analyses. There was a time, in the memory of some here tonight, when the annual meeting of The Institute was a nostalgic occasion. Often, in the 1920s, there was comment on the decline of Australian mining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries. When some of our Presidents prayed then for a new Bendigo, and instead were given a Mount Isa, they were justifiably disappointed because of the vastly different capital requirements.In 1967 the mining picture is very different. The recent mining developments in Australia are certainly as important as several Bendigos and several Kalgoorlies. The mining industry in Australia has never been more dynamic than today (Table 1). And if we ask why it is so dynamic, the answer lies in the role which overseas capital is playing in the industry. The contribution of overseas capital should concern us not only because we are members of the mining and metallurgical profession, but also because we have a duty to make our profession contribute as much as possible to the well-being of Australians. It is not sufficient to argue that overseas capital is good for the mining industry; we must also examine whether it is good for the economy and the nation. In this context the current criticism of the inflow of overseas capital into Australian mining is useful, for it gives us an opportunity to see what has resulted from the inflow.In discussing this question I do not suggest that we emulate Captain Hancock, that legendary Moonta mine manager who, according to Oswald Pryor's cartoon, used to say to his miners: "When I say a thing is, it is, even if it isn't". The question can only be discussed on a factual basis; and I would submit that many of the important facts relating to overseas capital in our mining industry are often overlooked or ignored. I would further submit, on the basis of these facts, that Australia's present day mining industry has been largely built on overseas capital and that the overall benefits of that capital to Australia have been enormous.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Computers and other microprocessor technology lead the world of technological change. Nevertheless, the real advances in the world at large are not necessarily in the computer industry, but in the industries whose economics benefit most by the advances that this computer revolution makes possible. The minerals industry has always been in the forefront of this advance. Technological change in the era preceding the industrial revolution, and the mining industry's part in it, provides an instructive lesson for what is happening today. Strong parallels can be drawn for predicting future advances. With each technological advance allowing more efficient production comes a re-alignment of economics - absolute and relative changes to prices, to quantities demanded, and to other market characteristics. This re-alignment applies not only to the mineral industry, but also to the world at large. Adaptability, rather than technical advancement per se is the key to survival and growth in a changing world. 'Adaptability' as a concept is easy to support. As an operational philosophy it is not so easy to implement. As a goal for planning, it is much harder to quantify. A fixed scenario of a future world may provide helpful guidelines, but a scenario that demands adaptability to an uncertain future world is much less definite. Of course, everyone else in the world is also uncertain about the future, and they are making their plans using different assumptions. This virtually guarantees that our future will turn out different to our expectations. This is in part what Hayek (1945) calls the 'knowledge' problem. Until now, most of the planning and technical research undertaken in the world has ignored this problem. This ignorance is a luxury that we can no longer afford. The paper looks at the history of technological change and highlights the characteristics of successful technological revolutions. 'Adaptability' to unforeseen circumstances is the key to success in this environment. The paper examines the knowledge problem from the perspective of the mineral industry, and suggests a number of directions for maximising the returns from application of computer technology in this important area.

A study was conducted to describe the microbiology of the MICCL Monywa chalcocite heap bioleaching operation. Microorganisms were detected in the heap using culture-based techniques and cultureindependent PCR-DGGE analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. The metabolic requirements, temperature and pH optima were determined for selected strains isolated from the heap material. Six strains (BH1-BH6) were enriched and isolated from heap solids and leachate samples. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA genes showed that strains BH3 and BH4 were closely related to the acidophilic bacterium Acidithiobacillus caldus and strains BH5 and BH6 were closely related to Leptospirillum ferriphilum. The optimum growth temperature for L. ferriphilum was 41.3¦C and the optimum pH range was 1.1 to 1.5. A new species of Archaea was isolated from the heap samples. Cells of the proposed species, Ferroplasma cyprexacervatum (æcyprusÆ L.n. meaning copper; æexacervoÆ L.v. meaning æto heap upÆ), are non-motile pleomorphic cocci, capable of chemomixotrophic growth with ferrous sulfate and yeast extract. Cells grow anaerobically on ferric iron in the presence of potassium tetrathionate and yeast extract as electron donors. Growth occurs from 14¦C to 63¦C, with an optimum temperature of 55.2¦C. The optimal pH for growth was 1.0 - 1.2. The species was phylogenetically most closely related to Ferroplasma acidiphilum with a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 95 per cent. Molecular analysis of mine samples (16S rRNA PCR-DGGE) detected the above-mentioned cultured strains of microorganisms as well as species of Sulfobacillus and other unknown Proteobacteria. The microbial community of the Myanmar bioleach heaps contained similar levels of diversity to a dump bioleach operation in Chile, but contained greater amounts of biomass than another heap bioleach operation in Australia. The operating parameters of the Myanmar heaps (low pH and moderate temperature) have selected for the growth of moderately thermophilic microorganisms that are more commonly found in extremely low pH acidic mine drainage sites than in heap systems. The novel species of Ferroplasma is thought to be involved in the aerobic and anaerobic cycling of iron within the heap bioleaching environment.

A 3D, PC based computer program is currently under development by Blasting Analysis International, Inc., to analyze the kinetics of full scale blasts with two or more high-speed motion picture cameras. Todays common approach of utilizing only a single camera system can, in some cases, lead to great errors and erroneous conclusions when motion is assumed to be in a predefined plane of motion. CMe phrase, "What you see is what you get, it no longer true in 3D."). This is especially true in blasting environments which exhibit complex and/or predominant structural geology. The 3D system eliminates this problem, and includes automatic corrections for vertical and horizontal camera optic axis orientation, dimensional controls, lens distortion, field set-ups, projection imaging and digitized inputs. The only information required is the surveyed or known coordinates of at least six non coplanar points in the field of view. Motitn from each camera view is then digitized, transformed through a direct linear transformation, and processed with the 3D software, which also automatically time matches the data, even when the high-speed cameras are operated at different speeds. Eleven calibration constants are generated using an overdetermined system of linear equations to output the true 3D coordinates of motion in the time domain. Applications for this 3D approach are not restricted to just analyzing the kinetics of a blast. The system is sufficiently flexible to allow an accurate, quick and economical method of bench face profile analysis, generate muck pile profiles and estimate volumetric calculations. The recording systems for these applications can be common 35mm still photography and/or video equipment. It is envisioned that this system will soon replace expensive laser surveying systems at a fraction of the cost in the near future. It is also an excellent system to accurately quantify drill pattern layouts and the spatial locations of each blasthole. This information is required for generating single hole based synthetic seismograms to accurately predict the vibrational outputs of full scale blasts. In terms of litigation concerning claims resulting from blast induced ground vibrations to structures, the system is proving to be an excellent and economical method of performing pre-blast surveys where differential settlement is suspect.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

Smelting is a process in which heat is applied to ores to produce metals. Impurities are removed by segregation in the slag, or converted to gases or sublimates and discharged up the flues. Mate- rials delivered into the smelter have generally been previously concentrated or processed at the mine, and the size of their particles, and also their chem- ical composition, greatly affect the smelting proc- ess. Some impurities are more difficult to remove than others, and are more objectionable in the finished product. The first metal mine in Australia was opened near Glen Osmond in South Australia in 1841, for silver-lead ore. It was followed by the Kapunda Mine for copper in 1844 and by the very signifi- cant Burra Mine, also for copper, in 1845 (Figure 1). A major part of their ores could not be exported profitably for smelting in England and Wales where the large smelters were then located. In addition to treating ores from Cornwall these also smelted ores from recently opened mines in Cuba, Chile, and Mexico. The Welsh smelting process (Figure 2) was developed over a period of years to utilise Welsh coal to treat copper ores particularly from Corn- wall. The first step consisted of a calcination to remove sufficient sulphur from sulphide ores so that subsequent melting operations would produce copper matte, a copper-iron-sulphide which melted at about 1050¦C. Subsequently refined to white metal with the addition of carbonate and oxide ores when these were available, and often through an intermediate step of blue metal, this matte was finally oxidised to pure copper, or as pure as it could be made in those days. The movement of metal towards greater purity was matched by a reverse flow of slag, carrying reducing quantities of copper, so that the slag rejected from the first melting process carried the minimum quantity of copper. Chemical analysis was virtually unknown. Materials were assayed in the laboratory by a small scale smelting process, and the purity of the final refined copper was judged b} the ease with Mhich it could be hammered into thin sheets.

The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

This article focuses on TurkeyÆs gold potential with respect to exploration, development and operation after 1985. Apart from TurkeyÆs geology, which offers a substantial number of volcanic-associated gold (Ag) and gold-copper (Au-Cu) projects, there are numerous other factors which make the country a favourable place for mining. Turkey has a mining history which goes back to pre-Roman times and an excellent mining code which ensures security for long-term production. In the country, the Government and local villagers are very positive and the country works extremely well logistically with excellent road and telecommunication links. The opportunities for new discoveries in Turkey are very high. Moreover, Turkey has its eyes turned west as it moves towards joining the European Community and it is no surprise that international companies believe it has got its timing as well as its partner relationship right. Newmont, Teck Cominco, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Eldorado Gold, etc all have direct or indirect interests in Turkey, as do an increasing number of midtier and junior exploration companies. Turkish Koza Gold Mining is the first Au producing company of Turkey. The Eldorado Gold owned 245 t Kisladag Au deposit in Western Turkey is currently also producing Au. In the meantime Anatolia Minerals Development is advancing the 131 t resource at the C÷pler Au deposit in North Eastern Turkey. These are significant world-class deposits. Further encouragement for investment in the Au mining sector has been provided by the introduction of a new mining law in 1985. Foreign investments in the country were encouraged and have seen a rapid increase in the last two decades. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is in excess of five per cent per annum, inflation is down from 70 per cent to single figures, the budget deficit has been cut by 40 per cent to 11 per cent and industrial output and productivity are increasing rapidly. Turkey is politically and economically stable, is a member of the European Customs Union, has a supportive mining legislation, is highly prospective and under-explored and hosts significant recent gold discoveries.

At the treatment plant of the Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, the zinc concentrates, with water, are pumped out to a more or less level area, and stored in dams to dry by drainage and evaporation.In-the construction of these dams a clay bank is first thrown up around the proposed dam site. The concentrate and water mixture are then run in from the perimeter, the solids being continuously shovelled up to increase the bank height, while the clear water is drained off at the centre and returned to the treatment plant.These dams vary in size up to 57,000 sq. ft. in area; when completed the banks are about 12 it. high, and the capacity for the largest dams is about 350,000 cub. ft., say, 20,000 tons.The survey office is called upon for a monthly survey of these dams, generally three of which are in process of building or refilling. The puggy nature of the material prohibits walking beyond the bank of the dam, therefore the following method of estimating concentrates was evolved. No originality is claimed, but as the need is for a true survey, and the results have shown the accuracy of the method, a description is warranted. The dam site is first laid out into 10-ft. squares with a theodoliteand 150-ft. steel tape, the outside lines being placed about 15 ft. from the clay bank - 15 ft. is the maximum convenient distance from the bank for working with the levelling staff mentioned later.As the dam is rarely rectangular in plan, the outside points pegged out are not always the corner of a square, but are placed to give the greatest convenience in later work, that is to say, there may be triangles and irregular figures. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

Triboelectric Charge and Separation Characteristics of Industrial Minerals The basic principles of triboelectric charge and separation of minerals and the factors affecting the entity of the charges developed on mineral surfaces are discussed and the surface pretreatment methods by which the electrophysical properties and thereby triboelectric charging and separation of minerals can be artificially altered/modified are reviewed. Furthermore, the triboelectricfication theory of materials is envisaged from the chemical concept of acid-base donor-acceptor and an attempt is made to correlate the physical concept of triboelectrification with the donor-acceptor properties. The triboelectric charge characteristics of the quartz, calcite and wollastonite mineral samples for different size classes were defined using different tribocharging medium. Based on the triboelectric charges acquired by mineral samples their energetic work function values are estimated. In addition, the main electrophysical properties, ie dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of different size fractions of the mineral samples are measured and their donor-acceptor chemical properties were defined. A series of triboelectric separation tests were conducted to explore the possibilities for separation these mineral from each others. The results from the triboelectric charge and separation of the single mineral systems showed promising prospect in separating quartz, calcite, and wollastonite from each others. Finally, attempts were made to explore the possibilities to implement triboelectric charge and separation process to real ores. Promising results achieved when separation of calcite from silicate impurity was sought from a carbonate ore. A very high purity (99 per cent) calcite product was obtained at a recovery of 80 per cent. Interesting results were also achieved to concentrate wollastonite from a complex silicate ore containing quartz, different feldspars, wollastonite and other Mg-Fe silicates. In this case conditioning of the ore with salicylic acid at defined temperature and relative humidity was found to be essential to concentrate wollastonite. The outcomes indicate despite the fact that triboelectric charge and separation process has not been completely perceived, it pronounced to be an environmentally friendly and economically viable technique for minerals and wastes beneficiation. Being a dry beneficiation technique the process has special appeal, which must be explored further in particular for treating industrial minerals.

For each tonne of chromite ore mined in Sukinda, approximately ten tonnes of fine overburden material is generated. The overburden typically contains about 30 - 60 per cent Fe2O3, 0.3 - 1.1 per cent Ni, four to nine per cent Cr2O3 and 0.04 - 0.2 per cent cobalt and is being discarded leading to loss of valuable metals and creating environmental pollution. In order to take the advantage of presence of iron, nickel and chromium, the present studies advocate the utilisation of nickel lateritic chromite overburden for production of Ni bearing pig iron through blast furnace extracting maximum iron and nickel from the chromite overburden. The present paper deals mainly with the beneficiation of chromite overburden, sintering characteristics and thermodynamic studies. The beneficiation study shows that a beneficiated concentrate having Fe - 50 per cent and Ni -- 1.1 per cent can be achieved from chromite overburden having Fe - 30 per cent and Ni -- 0.7 per cent. Sintering studies have been carried out with bed height of 300 and 450 mm at a suction of 600 and 900 WG respectively. The results reveal that good quality sinter can be produced from chromite overburden concentrate with a basicity of about 1.0 and coke breeze consumption rate about 16 per cent. In all the experiments, Tumbler Index, Abrasion Index and Shatter Index was found to be in the range of 65 - 70, 4.5 - 5.5 and 85 - 90 respectively. The other parameters namely softening temperature, melt down temperature, reduction degradation test and relative reducibility have also been determined. A thermodynamic analysis has also been carried out to make a technological assessment of the process for the production of alloyed pig iron from chromite overburden in blast furnace which shows that it is possible to produce nickel bearing pig iron in blast furnace using the sinter up to 80 per cent. Techno-economic analysis reveals that this route will yield a substantial profit even after accounting for cost of beneficiation, extra coke, raw materials and extra slag produced.

Ferruginous manganese deposits have been known at Ripon Hills since the late 1950s. The main group of deposits occur in an area 6 km by 5 km and these were extensively investigated by Longreach Metals N.L. during1971 and 1972 for possible commercial exploitation.Ripon Hills is a dissectcd fault plateau 350 m above sea level formed by the uplift of a block of gently dipping Proterozoic shales, cherts, and dolomite. The plateau consists of chert breccia which is underlain by massive dolomite. The shales which are ferruginous and manganiferous overlie the chert breccia but are now only preserved, in places, in the broad depression and valleys of the plateau.The ore deposits occur as supergene replacement of the shales and were investigated by geological mapping, grid percussion and diamond drilling, and bulk beneficiation testing. Iron and manganese oxides erraticallyreplace Shale accompanied by the leaching of other minerals. The ore is composed of fine grained pyrolusite intergrown with fine grained hematite and locally containing extensively altered bixbyite and braunite. Thegangue mineral is mainly kaolin.The average grade, using a 15 per cent Mn cutoff, was 19 4 per cent Mn and 25·9 per cent Fe for a combined drill-proven, indicated, and inferred tonnage of 56,000,000 tonnes. The average depth of this mineralization from the surface is 11 m. Using a cutoff grade of 20 per cent Mn the average grade was 24·6 per cent Mn and 23·0 per cent Fe for a combined tonnage of 12,000,000 tonnes to an average depth of 8 m.The substantial drop in reserves occurs because a high proportion of the mineralized material contains less than 20 per cent Mn.It was shown that whereas the lower grade ore, despite erratic fluctuations in grade, could be beneficiated to specification grade by crushing, screening, and conductivity ore sorting, the higher grade ore could be beneficiatedto specification grade by crushing and screening only. The utilization of the higher grade ore was considered to constitute a more viable operation.There is potential for high grade manganese ore to be discovered in the Ripon Hills area at the contact of chert breccia and underlying dolomite.

There has been an ongoing research on coal and gas outburst for the past two decades at the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, University of Wollongong. Research study began with a humble beginning, initially conducting basic laboratory studies on the coal and gas properties, progressing into the determination of gas content of coal by sorption technique and the effect of gas pressures on coal strength. The present laboratory facilities and research interests are extended to include the study of coal permeability and shrinkage properties and their effect of gas drainage characteristics with respect to gas type, and pressures. All the changes are examined with respect to changing in-site geological conditions of the coal deposit investigated. The aim is to provide a long-term support to industry in establishing a data bank for Australian coal deposit characteristics and properties.

ENGIE, the current owner and operator of the Hazelwood Open Cut coalmine, are in the process of rehabilitating the mine site in preparation for mine closure. Bucket wheel excavators (dredgers) used during coal mining operations are in the process of being demolished, which involves the controlled felling of dredger components using explosives. With the mine located in close proximity to the Morwell township and other critical public infrastructure, it is crucial that the use of explosives and the possible implications for mine stability is well understood. The felling of Large Mining Equipment (LME) will apply an impact load immediately to the underlying coal benches with the adjacent coal batters potentially at risk also of adverse slope stability impacts. This paper presents the 3D stability modelling methods employed to successfully assess the potentially adverse stability implications associated with LME collapse.

Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. Tasker (1985) has detailed the accepted practices for constructing polygonal blocks of influerrce in the estimation of ore reserves. Further he suggests that users might fall into traps such as omission or overlap when determining the area of influence for each sample point.As an example of these types of errors Tasker (1985) describes under "Coverage ofthe Area" how 25 per cent of the exploration area will not be included in an equiangular triangular grid where hexagonal blocks of influence are used.The introductory suggestion of Tasker (1985) of "incorrect procedure" by Rudenno (1983) (and Armstrong (1983)) reiterated around the Figure 2a of Tasker (1985), is based on the brief description of the polygonal area of influence by Rudenno (1983). That description is not too different from that given by King, McMahon and Bujtor (1982).
