Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

Several spatially and/or temporally distinct phases of epithermal activity can be recognised in the Horohoro-Matahana Basin area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the northern Matahana Basin a 140 - 350 ka age range is proposed for mineralised debris flow clasts and related (?) epithermal  mineralisation intersected in a recent drillhole. To the east, a ca. 40 - 50 ka age range is suggested for epithermal activity in the Waikaukau alteration zone which was focused along the Guthrie Fault. Hydrothermal explosion breccias occur over 13 km within the Guthrie Graben, and are probably sourced from vents in the south. Assuming a common origin, these breccias are constrained to a 45 - 50 ka age range. Within the Horohoro hydrothermal system (around the present hot spring), older (15 - 50 ka) and younger (0 - 15 ka) features can be distinguished.

Maintaining high carbon activity is vital to the efficiency of any Carbon-In-Leach or Carbon-In-Pulp process. Reduced activity can lead to longer residence times or gold losses in the tails. Regenerated carbon from the CIL circuit at Macraes Gold Mine was analysed for kinetic activity and composition over a 15 month period. An increase in kinetic activity during the time period was recorded, which was linked to reduced Na and Ca loadings. A laboratory simulation of the loading, stripping and regeneration of gold was developed and tested. Kinetic activities were obtained for synthetically fouled carbons following three circuits of the laboratory simulation. It was shown the competitive gold adsorption ability of xanthate fouled carbon (previously reported as a serious deactivator) could be significantly recovered following effective thermal regeneration. This ability was maintained in a subsequent circuit loading.

"Unconventional gas resources, including coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs, can be located above and below aquifers that provide groundwater for agricultural, industrial, urban and other uses. Development of these resources may, therefore, lead to potential impacts on groundwater supply.Management of reservoir/aquifer interconnections necessitates a program of focused data acquisition. For example, groundwater transfer from shallow aquifers to underlying CSG reservoirs may occur where CSG-containing units subcrop beneath shallow aquifers, possibly at significant distances from operating wells.Arrow Energy is undertaking studies of connectivity between aquifers including an investigation in collaboration with the Queensland Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment to evaluate connectivity between the Condamine Alluvium (CA) and CSG-containing Walloon Coal Measures (WCM).The Condamine Valley hosts highly productive agricultural land with groundwater resources heavily utilised for irrigation. Water demand outstrips available supply and groundwater has been subject to restrictions on further development since the early 1970s. Developments that could have an additional impact on groundwater resources in the CA are of major concern to local landholders. This paper describes: planned field investigations at two sites: 1. Stratheden, where pumping from the WCM will be undertaken 2. Most orebodies have cross-sections of less than I km2 and hence do not offer a particularly large target for exploration. Fortunately, although in the geological record ore deposits are small and rare and result from the exceptional coincidence of certain geological processes, these processes are mappable on a much larger, district to regional scale and constitute a mineral system in which the ore deposit is the central feature. A mineral system can therefore be defmed as 'all geological factors that control the generation and preservation of mineral deposits, and stress the processes that are involved in mobilising ore components from a source, transporting and accumulating them in more concentrated form and then preserving them throughout the subsequent geological history'. The mineral system concept emphasises that for many ore deposit types, although economically viable mineralisation may only occur on a scale of say, hundreds of metres, the total system offluid-rock interactions that led to ore formation can extend over a distance of tens to hundreds of kilometres around the deposit. When mapped out, the total mineral system provides a far larger exploration target than the actual ore deposit itself. Important geological factors defining the characteristics of any mineralising system include: I. sources ofthe mineralising fluids and transporting ligands; 2. sources ofthe metals and other ore components; 3. migration pathway; 4. thermal gradient; 5. energy source; 6. a mechanical and structural focusing mechanism at the trap site; 7. chemical and/or physical traps for ore precipitation. Changes in the stress field around faults due to the excavation of underground space or the extraction of underground resources induce fault reactivation. To understand the mechanism of fault reactivation, it is important to observe the deformation and sliding processes of the asperities, which is regionally contacted areas at the fault planes. In the laboratory, triaxial compression tests are commonly conducted to reproduce the stress conditions around faults and study their mechanical behaviours. The conventional measurement devices for triaxial compression testing (eg load cells, local deformation transducers, and piezoelectric sensors) uses sensors to measure changes in the physical properties of rocks, but the direct visual information for the sample condition inside the pressure vessel is limited and can only be estimated from the sample after the experiment. We recently developed a direct visual measurement system to observe the slip behaviour of rocks from the inside of the pressure vessel of a triaxial test apparatus. This paper introduces this visual measurement system and presents some preliminary experimental results. The visual measurement system consists of a steel housing with a built-in commercially available digital camera. The triaxial compression tests were conducted to visually observe the sliding behaviour of the pre-cut specimens and to measure its behaviour through the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The captured images and the DIC results show the displacement field of the specimens for different confining pressure. We verified the sliding behaviour and the failure at/around the triangular asperity under at different confining pressure.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. The Truong Son fold-thrust belt (TSFTB) is a prominent tectonic component of mainland Indochina that occurs as a north-west–south-east-trending tectonic entity that extends from north-eastern Laos, straddles the Laos-Vietnam border area and is submerged under the sea basin in east central Vietnam. The TSFTB hosts numerous regional-scale gold and polymetallic base metal deposits, and the mineralisation occurs along the strike of the belt; however, the potential of many of these deposits are inadequately evaluated. The ore mineralisation is hosted by different rock assemblages, including highly metamorphosed Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary and/or volcanic packages, which were intruded by several phases of magma and underwent a number of tectonic events. Several ore-forming styles – including porphyry, Carlin-type and sediment-hosted orogenic Au – were formed during at least two phases of regional thermotectonism that have been identified in the TSFTB. However, all of the major gold deposits/mineralisations are closely related to region-wide structural breaks and many of them are controlled by large-scale, high-strain zones. In submitting the accompanying sketch and description, the writer mentions that he has found this "gadget" a useful assay office adjunct.He believes that some millmen and assayers have been confronted, from time to time, with large samples of mill pulp for assay purposes and that although the commonly used method of coning and quartering dry sample is simple and effective, provided the samples are of reasonable proportion, the operator is frequently confronted with samples of pulp, sometimes up to 50 gallons. The writer stresses the advantage of being able to handle these samples. This fact inspired the design of the "gadget,"which was developed at the Kalgoorlie State Battery and has been found to give very reliable results. It has considerably eased the work of the assay office.Description. - A cone of suitable dimensions according to requirements (this one is about six gallons' capacity) is mounted on a light angle-iron frame and has a small hand-operated agitator paddle let into it far mixing purposes. The agitator and head frame are removable to facilitate cleaning. Four outlet pipes at the bottom at right angles to each other are controlled with one common plug, externally operated for discharging the pulp.Each operation of the machine delivers four equal parts; one or more of these can be used for further division as conditions require. Samples can thus be reduced to suitable assay room size in a few minutes.The dotted lines, enclosing the shaded portion, represent the four-bladed paddle.Each paddle is slotted with three parallel slots. Sampling systems are never perfect. They all have some bias and give variable sampling errors. The ways of thinking about bias and precision should be different before and after construction (or reconstruction) of a sampling system. Before a sampling system is constructed, the fundamental error variance can be estimated using GyÆs formula or by doing test work on the material to be sampled. The component of sampling variance which varies with the number of sample increments can be computed for the expected patterns of grade variation. The smallness of the bias can be checked using discrete element modelling, by checking that the proposed design complies with clauses in standards, or by copying an existing sampling system that performs well for similar material. After a system has been constructed, sampling precision can and should be monitored directly. Anyone claiming to take responsibility for a sampling system should know its precision. Bias could be checked by comparison to a more accurate sampling system, such as stopped-belt sampling, under conditions where bias seems most likely. However, it is more practical to conduct regular checks that the system is still operating as designed, that the design is still appropriate despite any changes to material flows, and that sample masses are consistent with the correct operation of the sampling system. If precision is not regularly assessed then it should be assumed to be very poor. If a sampling system is not regularly inspected then it should be assumed to be biased.

Over the last five years Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) has gone through a series of changes in response to both external and internal factors. These changes have included corporate reorganisation and funding restructure, as well as modifications to medium and long term business objectives. The nature and size of its coal reserves and markets requires SENZ to continue developing new mines as existing mines are depleted. As well, there are opportunities to develop new mines as coal markets change or to realise value from existing coal resources. To assist in this process, a set of mine project assessment guidelines which are relevant to the size and scale of anticipated mine developments have been developed for SENZ. These project guidelines are structured to operate from the early stages of project or resource review through to final feasibility study stage. The guidelines provide both a basis for planning and budgeting, and a control mechanism within the company. They also enable clear understanding of the status of individual projects and provide a framework for comparison between projects. SENZ now has a defined method to plan, monitor and control this important aspect of its business. The paper explains the development and structure of the guidelines, as well as providing examples of their application. and use. It demonstrates how SENZ integrates its long term planning, five year planning, annual planning, project planning and risk management to maximise the value of individual projects, business units and the company overall in a consistent manner.

Semi-massive to massive sulfides were drilled in a shallow-water (630 m) hydrothermal system in an island arc volcanic setting at the Palinuro volcanic complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea,Italy. Overall 12.7 m of sulfide minerlisation were drilled in a sediment-filled depression in a water depth of 630 - 650 m using the lander-type Rockdrill 1 drill rig of the British Geological Survey. The longest drill core recovered consists of 4.9 m of continues semi-massive to massive sulfides + sulfates with abundant late native sulfur overprint. Metal enrichment at the top of the deposit is evident in some cores with polymetallic (Zn, Pb, Sb, As, Ag) sulfides overlying more massive and dense pyritic ore. The massive sulfide mineralisation at the Palinuro volcanic complex contains a number of unusual minerals, including enargitefamatinite, tennantite-tetrahedrite, stibnite, bismuthinite and Ag-sulfosalts, that are not commonly encountered in mid-ocean ridge massive sulfides. In analogy to epithermal deposits forming on land, the occurrence of these minerals and the abundance of native sulfur suggest an intermediate to high sulfidation state for the hydrothermal fluids during deposition, implying that the mineralising fluids were acidic and oxidised rather than near-neutral and reduced as those forming typical base metal-rich massive sulfides along mid-ocean ridges. Oxidised conditions during sulfide deposition are likely related to the presence of magmatic volatiles in the mineralising fluids that were derived from a degassing magma chamber below Palinuro volcanic complex. The Archean Gossan Hill Group at Golden Grove, Western Australia, hosts two potentially economic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. The volcanic-sedimentary succession hosting this mineralisation is composed of a facies association which includes the products of rhyodacitic to,andesitic effusive volcanism, mass-flow sedimentation and concentrated hydrothermal fluid discharge, in a deep subaqueous setting. The Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan are widely compared to Archean volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits and a comparison of the facies associations hosting this style of mineralisation, in these two successions separated widely in time, allows a refinement of facies models suitable for exploration in ancient successions. The required deep subaqueous environment for the formation of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits places constraints on the physical processes that can operate during accumulation of the host stratigraphy. Limitations on the operation of physical processes is reflected by the resultant facies association which can be used to characterize suitable volcanic-sedimentary successions in which volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralisation may be present. The facies association includes: (1) proximal effusive volcanic products - lavas and associated autoclastic breccias (2) distal volcanic products - mass-flow resedimented pyroclastic debris (3) background sedimentation - reworked volcanogenic and terrigenous mass-flow sediments and (4) chemical sediments - exhalites including cherts, sulphides and oxides, with perhaps various carbonates and sulphates. Primary pyroclastic deposits are not expected to be present, other than distal water-lain air-fall deposits, derived from shallow to emergent basin margin explosive volcanic centres, which also provide a source for the resedimented pyroclastic debris.

I have chosen this topic for my address with the intention of preserving a rather extraordinary record of recurrent additions of capital in the financing of one of the world's important silver-lead-zinc mines. The recitation of the trials and tribulations which fore-shadowed the rise of Mount Isa Mines to a position of relative prominence in the realm of non-ferrous mineral production may, I hope, be of assistance to some of the younger members of the Institute who may be called upon during their careers to meet similardevelopmental and financial problems.Mount Isa Mines Limited was incorporated in New South Wales in 1924 with an Authorised Capital of 40,000 shares of £20 each.In November 1925 the Company acquired the leases and water rights of the Mount Isa Proprietary Silver-Lead Limited for 6,250 fully paid £20 shares. Shortly thereafter, but in the same year, the £20 shares were split up into £1 shares, thus bringing the Authorised Capital to £800,000.The leases purchased consolidated and brought under one management the principal ore bodies of the Mount Isa area.Transportation facilities were indispensable to the economic future of the field, so the construction of a railway extending the Government line from Duchess, 54 ,miles to Mo.unt Isa, was assured by the passage of a bill in October 1925 by the Queensland Parliament. Under the provisions of the so-called Mount Isa Railway Act the Company was required to idemnify the Government against national loss on this branch line for a period of 10 years.

Environmental management of minesites in general, and management of water discharges in particular, is receiving ever-increasing attention. One key component in the successful design and operation of water management systems is to address the presence of sediment in the water being conveyed. Sediment erosion in the mining environment is often greatly exacerbated by disturbing the ground surface of vast areas of catchment. If sediment avoidance, transport, deposition or release are not adequately addressed, the impact on water management facilities can include loss of storage and hydraulic capacity, more frequent equipment replacement, increased operational costs and potentially environmentally unacceptable sediment discharges to receiving waters. An overview of sediment management within water facilities is presented here, and design of one particular approach, the use of settling basins for sediment removal, is discussed in detail. Examples are used to illustrate lessons learnt where particular approaches to sediment management have been found to be lacking. The common themes in the lessons learnt include the need to characterise hydrodynamic conditions and sediment properties in the water source, to set performance targets for sediment management, and to develop operating procedures to meet these targets under a realistic range of scenarios. The examples show how analysis of expected performance of sediment management can help with planning of operation and maintenance strategies. For settling basins, use of a simulation model that includes the effects of turbulence on settling can provide considerable benefits in optimising basin design and evaluating performance. Even in the most basic approach to sediment settling, establishing performance targets based on design flow and sediment characteristics is critical.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. The experimentaJ work described in this paper deals with the preparation of titanium trichloride by reduction of titanium tetrachloride with hydrogen on hot surfaces.REDUCING AGENTS FOR TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDEThe free energy diagram (Fig. 1) for the formation of chlorides suggests that titanium' tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride by various reducing agents such as aluminium, zinc, arsenic, antimony, tin, mercury, silver, hydrogen, sodium, potassium and magnesium. A large open pit is planned at the site of an existing underground mine. Strategic planning work has been undertaken to investigate the project value associated with an expansion of underground operations in conjunction with the proposed pit. Previous analysis determined that any depletion of the available pit resource that changes the optimum pushback sequence has a significant negative impact on overall project value. Therefore, to investigate the viability of an underground expansion requires a system to identify the stope resource that would add value to a combined operation if mined ahead of the pit. The key solution to this problem was to generate a resource model variable that defines the blocks, which have greater discounted value if mined by stoping rather than by the open pit. A key assumption was that the open pit is the main driver of overall project value. From the identified potential underground resource, series of mineable stope shells were generated at a range of cut-offs. This stope reserve data formed the input to a mixed integer program based software tool that was developed and used to optimise the underground mining plan, at conceptual level, for various project configurations. A dynamic programming tool was then applied to evaluate the optimum value of a combined open pit and underground operation. The overall objective of this project was to determine the strategic plan that yields the optimum value for a combined undergroundûopen pit operation. The results provided a clear focus and direction for more detailed design and planning.

Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data û especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment. However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model. An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance. It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together û in a single step. However, the success of the Mine to MillTM project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from orebody model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling. However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements û not on the business model. This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies. Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning.

Coal mining in the Bulli seam in the Southern Coalfield in New South Wales has experienced the dangers of outbursts of coal and gas. These incidents present a major risk to the safety of mine workers and consequently a threat to the overall viability of the mining operations. Since the occurrence of a major outburst incident in the South Bulli Colliery in 1991 involving three fatalities, the primary contributory factors associated with coal/gas outbursts in the Bulli coal seam have been identified and a strategy for the management of the outburst risk has been formulated by the cooperation of mine operators, mine workers and the Department of Mineral Resources. Utilisation of risk management techniques in combination with modern gas drainage technologies and geological control methods have led to the formation of this effective outburst management plan. Clause 15 of the Coal Mines (Underground) Regulation 1999 in NSW has made it mandatory in an area of outburst to carry out mining in accordance with a code or guidelines developed for mining in outburst prone areas (DMR, 1999). In this paper an outburst management system is discussed which was developed for collieries in the Southern Coalfield that brings together all the available information including past experiences and risk management techniques in a documented form in order to maximise safety of mine workers. It is concluded that since the introduction of the outburst risk management systems in the Southern Coalfield in 1994 considerable reduction in outburst incidences have been experienced.
