The scope of this paper is to recount the development of segmental linings used in tunnel construction, starting with its inception as an improvement to the brick-lined tunnel approach of Brunel in England and moving through the history and development to the present day, before finishing with a few insights into what the future might hold. The paper also discusses the motivation for the relatively recent move towards replacing conventional steel reinforcing cages with steel fibres and the reasons why steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is rapidly becoming the material of choice for manufacturing precast concrete segmental linings.

In primary copper smelters, the received copper concentrate and other materials contain a certain amount of moisture, ranging from six to 14 per cent. Moisture in wet concentrate has a negative effect on the performance of the smelting furnaces when it is fed directly to the furnaces, namely increasing the energy consumption and the off-gas flow. There are several drying technologies available for drying copper concentrate, varying from direct heated rotary dryers and flash dryers to indirect heated steam dryers. Application of steam dryers has changed the drying process for copper smelters. Produced from a waste heat boiler, steam as heating medium enables plant-wide heat utilisation. Fossil fuel used from outside sources to remove water is no longer required and the combustion chamber is not required. In addition special attention has been paid to overcome the known problems of pollution emissions, excessive wear, clogging and frequent maintenance. The Kumera steam dryer is featured with many advantages based on principal improvements in reducing tube element wear and increasing drying efficiency. Thus, it has been considered as the first choice for those smelters where steam is available.

Movement of the fragmented rock mass is an inevitable consequence of open cut blasting. Uncontrolled, unaccounted movement from blasting commonly causes ore loss and dilution from waste mixing. Therefore, the prediction of the post-blast location of both ore and waste is vital in grade control and of direct interest to mining geologists. Direct measurement techniques have matured significantly over the past decade, but their use remains expensive and labour intensive. Access and safety issues are further disincentives to regular movement monitoring. What is needed is a combination of direct measurement to establish baselines and reliable predictive modelling.The W H Bryan Mining and Geology Centre of the University of Queensland has pioneered 3D blast movement modelling using ‘physics engines’ to handle in-flight collisions and predict the final resting place of blasted material. Open cut metalliferous mines are a demanding environment for this style of modelling as they can involve complex geometries and variable buffering, which leads to inconsistent confinement. A version of the model designed to deal with these complexities is under development. A well-controlled field trial was needed to validate this new version.A validation trial was completed at a gold mine in South-East Asia. The aim was to increase throughput by increasing the blast powder factor without losing grade through dilution and mixing with waste. Four blocks were blasted to identify the effect of bench height and face confinement on ore movement, fragmentation and process throughput. The powder factor and blast timing were kept constant. Movement of the broken rock was measured by placing blast movement monitors at known positions in the block and then locating them after the blast. The majority of sensors were recovered, providing a unique insight into blast movement dynamics and generating a substantial data set for model validation.The model (called ‘MetaMove ‘) was calibrated for one blast and applied to investigate the extent of grade loss and possible mitigation strategies. Conventional mining techniques that involved firing across the strike of the orebody, and no post-blast boundary adjustment of the ore/waste boundaries prior to digging, were found to cause up to 44 per cent loss of high-grade ore, depending on the grade distributions. Post-blast adjustment of the ore/waste boundaries can negate this loss. The model indicates that altering timing and ensuring that the block boundaries are well confined can further constrain the movement of ore/waste boundaries. Thus, the model can be successfully applied to minimise grade dilution and limit misclassification of ore as waste whilst using higher powder factors to increase mill throughput. Application of a calibrated model to move ore/waste boundaries prior to digging will enable the production geology team to add significant value to the mining operation.CITATION:Cocker, A and Sellers, E J, 2014. Sampling of CIL/CIP circuits is typically done by compositing samples of feed and tails over eight or 12 hour periods. As the residence time in the leaching tankage may be approximately 20 hours, the tails from any period being derived from material entering the circuit 20 hours earlier do not correspond to the head from the same sampling period. Moreover, mixing in the series of tanks in a circuit also modifies correspondence between input and output. A special purpose simulator has therefore been developed to allow for the mixing and delay in the tankage and permit estimation of the head assays corresponding to any tailings sample. Thus more accurate assessment of the day-to-day recoveries of gold and silver follows. The model, programmed in Excel, assumes that the tanks are perfect mixers. By inputting the sequential head grades and considering that no leaching has occurred, the head grade which corresponded to the tailings for each period could be estimated. Allowance is made for variations in feed rate over the sampling period by computing the average flow rate of slurry and thus the residence time of each increment of the tailings. This simple model and its application have been found to be subject to some limitations, which are discussed in the paper, resulting in some unresolved variability in results. However, for a typical circuit even the simple model was able to greatly improve consistency of recovery data with variations being approximately halved by eliminating much of the anomalous variation arising from the lack of correspondence between head and tail when changes in head grade are occurring. Therefore, this permits genuine variations in metallurgy to be identified with greater confidence and thus operational shortcomings can be identified and addressed more quickly.

This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

Specific focus with be given to quantitative microanalysis techniques including electron probe microanalysis and laser ablation, covering general principles, capabilities and limitations and recent development to address specific challenges associated with analysing molten slag, matte, and alloys, highlighting the necessity of embracing the application of these and other innovative analytical methodologies.

Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. The rapid production and accumulation of mineral processing wastes in the environment can present serious threats to environmental quality and human health. Phytostabilisation with native plant ecosystems is, in many cases, a preferred option for rehabilitation of mine waste storage facilities. However, much of the literature has focused on species selection in short-term experiments to test their suitability under the often extreme chemical conditions in the wastes without addressing the fundamental requirements – ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation and functional root zones. As a result, successful examples of phytostabilisation of mine wastes such as base metal tailings have been rare, especially if success is defined as meeting the completion criteria of non-polluting and sustainable land system at rehabilitated sites. Conventional capping options to isolate reactive tailings/wastes by using physical break and/or sealing layers are often not reliable in the long term (particularly under semi-arid climatic conditions) and, in many cases, they may not be feasible in the field due to the large areas to be covered and the lack of adequate suitable materials at mine sites. By using sulfidic tailings as an example, we have proposed a new paradigm for phytostabilising mine wastes – ecologically engineered pedogenesis in tailings involving accelerated physical, chemical and biological weathering of tailings minerals to achieve hydrogeochemical stabilisation and the development of soil functions, soil horizons and functional root zones.Ecologically engineering functional root zones firstly requires controlling geochemical reactivity in the wastes (ie hydrogeochemical stabilisation), which can cause polluting effects in the root zone and plant toxicity. By means of ecological engineering, in situ weathering of primary minerals (eg pyrites) in tailings may be accelerated by adding functional materials (eg functionalised biochars and organic matter) in the waste slurry during the process of deposition. This will remove or diminish key risk factors (eg potential acidity in tailings and elevated soluble heavy metals) in the solid phase, before placing growth media for reconstructing root zones and transplanting/sowing target plant species. However, much of the acidity, soluble metals/metalloids and other salts would be transported out of the solid phase into the wastewater, which can be addressed by on-site water treatment facilities during mine operation. The trajectory and state of engineered pedogenesis in the weathered tailings may be manipulated to provide specific soil horizons within future root zones that are dynamically evolved toward fully functional soil subsystem within rehabilitated plant ecosystems.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Zhou, L and Mulligan, D, 2014. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing æMine to MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change û both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT-AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices û so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or æbuy inÆ. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work û but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-APÆs experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-APÆs involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. Mine haul road design at Bougainville Copper Limited has undergone significant changes since mine start-up. Selection of 95 tonne trucks and the subsequent replacement by 155 tonne units is discussed, with particular reference to haul conditions within the mine. Changes to haul road design and construction practices are detailed which have lead to improved standards and tyre life. INTRODUCTION Bougainville Copper Limited operates one of the largest copper mines in the world at Panguna, Bougainville Island, in the North Solomons group of Papua New Guinea. The mine commenced commercial operation in April, 1972 and current planned production is 198 000 tonnes of material per day, of which 115 000 tonnes is ore averaging 0.46% copper. Annual total planned production is 72 000 000 tonnes to yield approximately 150 000 tonnes of copper with significant quantities of gold and silver. The mine operations workforce now consists of national employees up to General Foreman level.

Organic complexing agents have received special attention over the past few decades in the search for reagents for improved flotation separation of minerals, especially non-sulphides. The majority of such reagents that have been proposed over the past few decades have remained largely a laboratory curiosity, except perhaps alkyl hydroxamates, because their selection is seldom based on commercial viability. In this regard, the choice of complexing agents such as oximes may be more realistic because of their widespread use in solvent extraction of copper. Our earlier studies have confirmed that they are also effective as collectors for copper oxide minerals, including chrysocolla which is the most difficult copper mineral to beneficiate. The flotation behaviour of chrysocolla for several structurally-related hydroxyoximes were studied as a function of pH and oxime concentration and the role of structural features examined. The structural changes studied included substitutions in both chelating and non-chelating parts of the molecule. The results indicated that, contrary to expectations, many of the structural changes in the basic molecule, salicylaldoxime, do not have a positive effect on collector efficiency. The reduction in collector efficiency is rationalised on the basis of possible steric factors affecting complexation and packing of the collector species on the mineral surface as well as effects due to changes in electron density brought about by substituents. Introduction of alkyl substituents on the oximic carbon of salicylaldoxime yielded the highest collector efficiency.

Regolith, the blanket of bedrock weathering products and surficial sediments, covers almost all of the landsurface. In Australia extensive areas are covered by regolith up to several hundred metres thick which is relatively old (extending back to the Mesozoic or possibly earlier) and largely complex. As such, it is poorly understood and is presently regarded as a significant hindrance to resources exploration. The regolith: obscures bedrock lithology and structure blankets ore deposits in the bedrock hosts surficial mineral deposits ranging from placers (gold, diamonds, platinum, mineral sands ....) to chemical precipitates (uranium, opal, gold, bauxite....). contains important groundwater resources. The application of surface exploration techniques without recognition or understanding of the regolith could result in wasteful expenditure. The understanding of the distribution and characteristics of the regolith in the context of its evolution and geomorphic history and its relationship to underlying bedrock will promote development of suitable geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques. It also will assist exploration industry with the interpretion of data from: geological mapping soil geochemical surveys stream sediment geochemical surveys airborne remote sensing airborne radiometric surveys other airborne geophysical surveys some ground geophysical surveys shallow drilling and so improve mineral exploration Strategies.

A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. Parameters affecting gold elution using the AARL process are reviewed and critically analyzed in an attempt to optimise metallurgical efficiency and minimise costs in both current and future carbon adsorption operations. Such factors as acid washing, column geometry, elution temperatures and pretreatment reagents are discussed together with eluant water quality and eluate flowrates. Hot acid washing of carbon prior to gold elution has many benefits. Besides improving elution efficiency when eluting with regional water, a hot acid treatment preheats the carbon without causing any gold leakage. Laboratory data indicated that hot acid washing reduces the mass loss of carbon during thermal regeneration. The eluate going to either zinc precipitation or electrowinning is also relatively free of troublesome impurities (organic contaminants and ferrocyanides in particular). Because of the chromatographic character of the AARL elution where an ionic strength gradient is used to inhibit the readsorption of gold, column geometry plays a significant role. While practical considerations and capital costs may restrain the length of the elution column, high length/diameter ratios are advocated in order to promote the plug flow of column eluate. From both a metallurgical and costing viewpoint, the two significant factors affect- ing the AARL gold elution are temperature and cyanide addition. High temperature and high reagent additions within prescribed limits will improve metallurgical efficiencies, but a balance between energy and reagent costs is required in order to minimise overall elution costs. As pretreatment reagents constitute a considerable portion of the total elution costs, both the addition and consumption of sodium cyanide must be carefully considered. Lower cyanide additions may be effective in certain instances, but the more practical use of 0,6 bed volume of a 2-3 per cent NaCN reagent containing 2 per cent NaOH is advocated. This is equivalent to an addition of 20-30 kg NaCN and 20 kg NaOH per ton carbon Treated.

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in æconventionalÆ industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then provides practical examples of how a multi-disciplinary team can develop new processes and systems leading to productivity, safety and other benefits for underground coal mining.

A methodology of environmental performance evaluation in mining developments is proposed, as well as guidelines and procedures for obtaining information to improve their environmental performance. Environmental performance is the results of the mining activities and their relation to environmental issues. If this evaluation is carried out on an on-going basis, it is possible to anticipate or to identify the formation and development of an environmental impact in its early stages. Evidence or trends identified by environmental evaluation provide valuable information to prevent further damage. The proposed methodology is based on the significant environmental aspects of a selected monitored job site by environmental indicators which are then compared with previously defined environmental criteria and targets or goals. The methodology procedures also take into account the environmental accounting of the investments and expenditures.

The Kwinana (Western Australia) and Gladstone (Queensland) industrial areas are among the few dozens of heavy industrial areas globally that demonstrate significant levels of regional resource synergies. Such synergies are also referred to as æindustrial ecologyÆ or æindustrial symbiosisÆ. Fundamentally they involve the exchange of by-products or sharing of utilities between companies in close geographic proximity to achieve competitive advantage and environmental benefit. A concerted research effort is currently underway to foster greater realisation of regional resource synergies in minerals processing intensive regions, in Australia and internationally. This paper summarises current insights from the foundation research into engineering tools and technologies and enabling mechanisms for regional resource synergy developments. Regional resource synergy developments were reviewed for 16 international and two Australian regions. It was found that Kwinana and Gladstone compare favourably with the well-regarded international examples of regional synergy development. Given the fairly strong evidence that self-organisation is critical for regional synergy developments, an implementation model has been proposed that captures entry points for synergy developments at the level of platform (industry collaboration), process (developing synergy opportunities) and project (assessing and implementing specific synergies). It was also found that regional synergies have so far developed in the absence of specific methods for identification and screening of synergy opportunities. Moreover, very limited attention has been paid to the associated technological and engineering challenges. The current technical research effort therefore targets: the development of a toolset for the identification and development of potential synergy opportunities; and assessment of technology needs and opportunities for regional synergies involving water, energy and materials recovery and reuse.
