Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

The problem of comparison of island arc's andesites in terms of petrochemical data is exa- mined. It is definitely established that only two main factors exist controlling the petroche- mical variety of the Kurile arc's andesites.Ori final multivariate statistical technique and computer software are used to extract these fac- tors. It is shown as well that the chemical com- position of igneous rocks depends on the type and structure of the Earth's crust. The follo- ~cing interpretation is proposed for the two factors describing petrochemistry of andesites: the first one is the depth to the Benioff seis- mofocal zone and the second one is supposed to indicate the position of the peripheral magma chambers. White phosphorus (P4) is a critical element in industry, but its current production from phosphate rock using the carbothermal reduction method raises significant environmental and health concerns. This pressing issue necessitates the development of new technologies that facilitate the sustainable production of P4. In response, my team is actively developing an innovative, coke-free approach for white phosphorus production. This method involves the dissolution of phosphate rock in molten CaCl2, followed by the extraction of P4 through electrochemistry at relatively low temperatures. Moreover, this approach has the potential to utilise phosphate-bearing solid wastes as raw materials, further enhancing its environmental benefits. By employing this cutting-edge technique, we aim to revolutionise the phosphorus chemical industry towards greener and more sustainable practices. This paper provides evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed approach.

The influence of the life of a mine extends beyond its immediate vicinity both in geographic and temporal terms. Decisions around mine approvals are generally made based on economics, for the mine owner and immediate environmental and social impacts by governments and communities. The value from life-of-mine planning can also be viewed in a holistic frame across the entire value chain from mine to product user. The 15-year long debate between the industry, Government and Aboriginal people about the rights and wrongs of Land Rights, the right of Aboriginal people to control development on their land and the relationship between the parties, has been long and often bitter. It has so far been a war of words and often the truth has been the first casualty. This paper looks at the debate and presents the perspective of Aboriginal people, as well as looking at how the industry and Aboriginal people can work together for everyone's benefit. It addresses such matters as: ò why Aboriginal people believe they have the right to control development on their land; ò the perception that Aboriginal people are anti-development; ò the perception that Aboriginal land is 'locked-up'; and ò how companies can negotiate with Aboriginal people.

This paper uses a case study to demonstrate best practices techniques for predicting the contribution of gravity concentration in a gold recovery process flowsheet. The case study was selected as an example of an ore with a marginal gravity gold content, which makes the value of a gravity circuit difficult to quantify. In this instance the value of leveraging a significant knowledgebase of operating gravity circuit performance to support the decision making process was demonstrated. Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Additional construction related issues associated with the complete relocation of the GCC plant to Whim Creek will be covered in the conference presentation.

There are three major human resource management activities which, depending on how well they are done, impact on the performance of people and therefore the bottom line. These are: ò recruitment; ò training and development; and ò performance appraisal. Most sizeable organisations would say they are involved in all three, but there are many more that would admit that their human resource management practices are limited to recruitment. If we concentrate on the organisations that currently undertake all three, we have to ask, `Are they using different systems/benchmarks for each activity, or is there congruence between the activities?'. Our experience is that most organisations use different systems/benchmarks. The end result is: ò one set of criteria to recruit staff; ò another to identify their training needs; ò and yet another set of criteria to measure their staff's Performance.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

A joint project between the Fan Kou Mine, the Guangzhou Research Institute of Non-ferrous Metals, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, and the Changsha Design and Research Institute of Non-ferrous Metals has implemented grinding control on a circuit consisting of two primary mills and a single secondary mill at the Fan Kou mine in northern Guangdong province, PR China. This paper describes the initial design of the control system and the changes made during its implementation. The initial design was to obtain maximum throughput at a constant product size. This was changed so that the control provided a constant product density at a set feed rate. The set feed rate is reduced when necessary to prevent overloading of critical components in the circuit. The reasons for the changes in the control strategy are discussed.

Taxes have an impact on mineral resource availability in several ways. There is the obvious effect on the grades needed for mineral deposits to become economic orebodies. There are also indirect effects which can have equally significant impacts. The paper examines the appropriateness of different types of taxes in the mining industry. The effects of discriminatory taxes such as price-based royalties are described. There is a discussion on the feasibility of introducing a single resources tax to replace completely the various forms of taxes presently applied to the industry. The subtle impacts of taxes are described in a section covering the way in which apprehension over future possible changes to both the level and diversity of taxes is reflected in industry confidence. It is concluded that taxation can significantly limit the economic availability of mineral resources.

The results of shaft lining monitoring gave rise to an investigation of cracks observed in the structure. An hypothesis was made that the cracks might be due to stresses caused by energy wave propagation, triggered during blasting or by the rock falls. However, it could not be excluded that the cracks had their origin in the rheologic changes taking place in the concrete. To prove the hypothesis, an investigation of the scale of the increase of stress due to the energy triggered was undertaken. At the same time it was decided to attempt to determine the "damage threshold" for such material in the danger zone. In the paper the investigation and its results are presented, as conducted in one of the shafts. In conclusion, certain generaliza- tions are proposed to give a starting point in the consideration of similar problems elsewhere.

The title of this paper implies, and the text explicity states, that Sen and Spottiswood (1984) have found a new mineral species related to geocronite and jorganite. I believe that there is inadequate justification for this claim.The X-ray powder diffraction pattern reported by the authors exhibits a close similarity to that of geocronite, as stated by the authors, which suggests a close structural relationship at the very least. It is therefore reasonable to recalculate the results of the microprobe analysis reported by them to atomic proportions on the basis of the geocronite formula. This calculation, whether based on the formula used by Sen and Spottiswood (1984), or on one derived from a crystal-structure analysis (Birnie and Burnham, 1976), namely Pb18 (Sb, AS)11S46, with a total of 86 atoms, gives the results shown in Table 1.

Previous mineralogical investigation of all effluent flotation streams of Mimosa mine (Zimbabwe) indicated that appreciable amounts of liberated platinum-group minerals (PGMs) of the Pt-Pd-Bi-Te class are not recovered û despite electrochemical measurements showing interaction between xanthate and such minerals. In this work, the flotation recovery of synthetically prepared Pd-Bi-Te was compared with that of chalcopyrite (a typical fast-floating mineral) and pyrrhotite (a typical slow-floating mineral), with microflotation tests. These indicated Pd-Bi-Te to be a fast-floater with flotation rates exceeding that of chalcopyrite. Predicted flotation rate constants (from the Ralston model) were significantly lower for small particles (with diameters similar to those lost to the effluent streams) compared with those of particle with intermediate sizes. This supports the suggestion that losses to effluent streams are caused by particle size effects.

Process control applications to the unit operations in both the Lead and Copper Smelters are reviewed. The basic aim of this control is to smooth plant inputs to produce an output of consistent quality in terms of chemical composition, temperature and physical properties. Most effort has been put into the process bottlenecks, namely in the process baghouse of the Lead Smelter and in the Copper Smelter reverberatory furnaces. The method of approach is discussed, firstly extensive plant measurement and data logging plus identification of factors which most affect the unit operation and secondly control of these factors to smooth out variations. This has been possible due to the development in-house of on-line instruments to measure the critical variables and the external use of computers for plant control. Some of these instrument developments are also briefly discussed.

The incidence of colliery disasters has highlighted the need for more centralised and directed coal mining safety research in Queensland, with particular impetus from explosions at Box Flat in 1972, Kianga in 1975 and Moura No 4 in 1986. Inquiries which identified the likely causes recommended measures and, research and two outcomes have been the present Mines Safety Research Advisory Committee and The Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station at Redbank, near Brisbane, dealing with all mining problems, coal and metalliferous. Already, important research into ignition and explosion and other health and safety matters has been accomplished; the Station has become an accredited testing laboratory; and international recognition has been achieved. Now the advisory, testing and research arms are soundly in place to pursue preventive investigations and be ready to provide assistance in any emergencies.

Nchanga Division of ZCCM has installed and operated a trolley assist system on part of their truck fleet for some three years. This paper examines how the system came to be chosen and how the many features of construction and operation were dealt with. The economics and productivity of the system are presented as are the personnel aspects of acceptance and training. Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines is a state controlled copper mining company formed by the amalgamation of the former Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines and Roan Copper Mines. The company operates seven copper mines the largest producer being the Nchanga division, which is scheduled to produce some forty-two percent of Zambia's copper production. The division operates four open pits and an underground mine which produce annually some 192 000 and 96 000 tonnes respectively of copper contained in ore.

Arising from prospecting success, the underlying worth of the shares of a publicly listed mining exploration company can increase many-fold. Prompt and accurate reporting during the exploration stage is therefore essential. While there is scope for varying degrees of optimism or caution in statements about the future economic prospectivity of a mineral deposit which has been discovered, the directors of a mining exploration company have both a legal and ethical obligation to keep their shareholders and the general public fully informed as to the state of progress of, and significant factual results arising from its exploration efforts. Suggestions are made as to the desirable form and content of exploration reports up to and including the time when the orebody has been delineated in terms of assured tonnage and grade. The benefits which will flow from this greater disclosure are discussed.
