A brief history of the significant haulage truck feature changes and the factors that influenced those changes during the 60's and 70's provide a basis for forecasting the changes that can be expected in the 1980's. A review of the impact factors and changing requirements that currently exist that will create changes. Define the critical requirements of a successful haulage truck design and discuss the availability of bigger engines and better electric drive componetry to provide deeper pit capability and improve reliability. The Unit Rig Trolley Assist System to provide improved productivity and diesel fuel savings and an economic analysis to evaluate the Trolley System is covered. The Unit Rig Automatic Truck System for a driverless truck is covered in concept and discussed from the point of view of the experience in a test in a New Mexico mine. INTRODUCTION A good basis for trying to forecast what is going to happen in the future is to go back a little bit in history, to see what the influencing elements were in different periods of time as a foundation for the forecast. Grade Engineering® involves the planning, integration and operation of coarse preconcentration techniques to reject uneconomic material as early as possible in the mining value chain to improve the quality of ore delivered to mineral processing activities. These preconcentration techniques include screening for natural and induced deportment of grade to finer size fractions during blasting and coarse breakage, sensor-based measurements of grade and mechanised sorting at particle or bulk scales and coarse gravity separation. Over the last decade, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE), with the support of its participants, has developed a framework for the holistic evaluation of economic and production impacts attributable to these preconcentration techniques. The framework combines the characterisation of preconcentration responses, geostatistical modelling, process modelling and simulation of downstream and upstream production impacts and the optimisation of strategic mine plans to quantify changes in net present value due to different preconcentration strategies. This framework has been applied to evaluate preconcentration techniques at numerous metalliferous operations and can also be used to quantify changes in the environmental metrics for energy, water and steel consumption and emission, tailings and waste rock production. This paper collates the results of these Grade Engineering® studies to show the range and magnitude of economic and environmental impacts attributable to preconcentration. The studies have shown that rejection of uneconomic material prior to mineral processing activities can have a pronounced improvement in energy, water and comminution steel productivity, emission intensity and the profitability of metalliferous mining.

Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

Every mine is situated within a water catchment – a catchment with potentially many other land uses. A mine may take up a relatively small area in that catchment, but its operations have the potential to affect the whole catchment and long after that mine has ceased to operate. Therefore, the residents of any given catchment have the right to feel secure in the knowledge that their catchment, and indeed the wider environment, will not be degraded by mining activities. Much conflict can arise when this confidence does not exist.But, imagine if a community not only felt confident that their catchment would not be degraded by mining activities, but was also confident that their catchment would be left in a better and continuously improving condition – with improving water quality, biodiversity and soil - and a strengthening, more resilient economy. The role of metals in the economy is discussed with regard to the flow of metals through to final demand and is illustrated by data for seven metals. Factors influencing the changing pattern of metal consumption are described, including relative prices. A des- cription and discussion of current metal demand forecasting methodologies precedes a discussion firstly of broad economic trends and secondly of the evolving pattern of metal consumption relative to GDP (metal consumption intensity), as technology and other factors change and as economies mature. The tendency for metal consumption intensity to plateau and decline when economies reach a certain region of per capita GDP, following a rapid rise early in the industrial- ization process, is shown in comparative data for seven metals and six countries.

The mechanism of caving is of interest to the mining engineer only in areas where he is directly concerned. One area is surface subsidence which is outside the scope of this paper. Another area is at the face where coal is being extracted and where control of caving is of vital importance. Coal mining systems have been developed with many considerations in mind, but in this list of considerations, strata control has seldom been given much importance. Research is in progress in Australia to endeavour to determine an optimum sequence for coal extraction underground. As information becomes avail- able from this work it is hoped that appropriate methods of controlling caving in various strata conditions will be devised. When this is done, equipment may be introduced to permit the mining operation to proceed under optimum conditions for strata control, rather than devising a mining procedure to suit the equipment available and methods developed for other reasons.

The major upswing in, gold processing this decade has brought the technology of heap leaching, carbon in pulp and carbon in leach, flotation for gold and tailings retreatment to Queensland. Validation and Simulation of Optimised Compressive Crushing Ores and aggregates are used in countless applications all around in the society. The frequent and escalating usage of these natural resources requires efforts aimed at not only making do with what is available, but also undertaking actions to improve the production yield and the processes involved. This strive to improve the performance and efficiency of existing crushers and crushing processes has brought about research concerning optimisation of crushing plants as well as theoretical optimisation of crushing. Previous work shows that different applications and different materials require different compressive crushing in order to accomplish a theoretically optimal size distribution. These optimisation results, obtained by genetic evolutionary algorithms and evaluated with so called fitness functions, convey the theoretically optimal number of compressions and their corresponding compression ratios. Presented in this paper are thus some laboratory crushing tests, which are conducted in order to validate a set of previously optimised crushing sequences. More specifically, interparticle crushing sequences are carried out in a Piston-die testing equipment, where samples are sieved between each compression. The subsequent analysis of these results shows good correlation with model predictions, which combined with a comparative study between presented optimisation results and measured data from a real crusher indicate a significant potential for improvement. However, before redesigning crushers according to what is theoretically optimal, the resulting impact as well as the effects on the outcome of a crushing plant must be examined. Crushing plant simulations using the software PlantDesigner« are consequently performed. Models of existing crushers are altered, resulting in changed particle size distributions from some of the crushers in a crushing plant. Thence, it is concluded that significant gains can be made in terms of capacity, process yield and energy consumption.

The operation of grinding circuits are vital to the success of most mineral processing operations in the provision of effective size reduction whilst maximising throughput. However these same circuits, and especially semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills, are highly interactive with product re-circulations and long time delays. This makes the optimal control of these difficult by conventional controllers, such as PID, which generally places a heavy reliance upon operations for control. In order to account for the peculiarities (such as ore type changes) and the abnormal situations that continually beset these circuits, it is necessary to adapt linear control techniques to cater for these situations. The Honeywell Hi-Spec Solutions SmartGrindTM controller is a marriage of multivariable predictive control (MPC) with techniques that provide adaptation of the control to optimise the circuit under all conditions. Optimal control is achieved by incorporating pattern recognition techniques to detect and act on discrete events (eg ore type changes) and adaptation of the MPC to account for known process and equipment non-linearities. AlcoaÆs Wagerup Refinery is the first site worldwide to have this technology applied to the SAG milling circuits and this has resulted in throughput increases in excess of two per cent and significant improvements in circuit operations. This paper describes the implementation of the control to the refineryÆs Mill 3 bauxite grinding circuit and the capacity/operational improvements achieved thereof.

'Industrial Minerals - their mining and use in New Zealand' is the theme of the 1978 Annual Conference of the New Zealand Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This paper describes the use of phosphate rock, sulphur and potassium chloride (potash) - three industrial minerals which have enabled the farmers of New Zealand to increase production to current levels. The growth of imports of these raw materials for the New Zealand fertiliser industry is well documented in NZ Fertiliser Statistics 1977. This is the most recent of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries annual publications on this Subject prepared from the detailed returns of fertiliser manufacture and sales from each fertiliser works. There are now 12 of these works in New Zealand one of the most recently established being in Whangarie where this conference is being held. Its capacity to manufacture superphosphate will shortly be 300 000 tonnes twice that when it opened late in 1964. New grinding and manufacturing equipment comes on stream early in 1979. This paper illustrates the interdependence of two primary industries, agriculture and mining. New Zealand's economy in the foreseeable future will be based on agriculture so that our standard of living is dependent on the overseas prices and freight costs of the bulk raw materials from which our fertilisers are made. For the year ended 31 March 1978 New Zealand's total exports were $3395 million, of this total $2413 million (71%) came from the products of pastoral agriculture (wheat, wool, dairy and other animal products), $291 million from forest products and $501 (15%) from manufactured exports. Approximately half of the pastoral receipts can be attributed to the fertilisers applied at a total cost of about $200 million including subsidy.

Supergene nickel sulphide ore mined currently by Agnew Mining Company is at times partially oxidised to sulphate. The resulting soluble nickel, and calcium and magnesium in mill water, are shown to act as depressants in flotation. The depressant effect is favourably selective in that violarite, the main nickel mineral, is less affected than pyrrhotite. Nickel recovery, however, is adversely affected, probably through reduced flotation of complex sulphides. Soda ash consumption is increased markedly by the presence of the cations as shown by operating data and pulp titration tests. A significant increase in concentrate grade, from 9% to 14% Ni, was achieved late in 1981. One of the changes in plant practice which contributed to this improvement was the addition of soda ash to mill feed rather than to flotation feed as before. It is shown by laboratory tests that this reduced the depressant effects of the cations, thereby improving recovery at the expense of rougher selectivity, or equivalently, increasing concentrate grade at constant recovery. The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Australian Mining Industry Council are concerned that a sufficient number of able young people receive an adequate level of professional training for the mineral industry. A Joint Committee on Education has been formed to pursue these objectives. At a time of strong growth in the industry it is most important to forecast the demand for people, so that the educational authorities will be able to provide adequate facilities. The factors to be considered in fore- casting the demand for professional staff are set out, and the proposed method of assessment is outlined.

The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

The Lennard Shelf Operations owned by Western Metals Ltd evolved from the Cadjebut Zinc Lead Mine (BHP) in August 1994. Original production of 0.5 mtpa will rise to 2.0 mtpa at the end of 1998. Employees work a multiple of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) rosters from the Kimberley region and the WA Capital. The three underground mines, treatment and services departments will employ approximately 300 people by the end of 1998. The expansion of the Lennard Shelf Operations as a remote mining location was based on a fresh look at management systems and employee rosters which were generated from many years of mining experience. This paper will endeavour to summarise these experiences and analyse some of their outcomes. Dealing with several mining methods, engineering difficulties, logistical problems and climate extremes, the Lennard Shelf Operations has managed social/employee issues with excellent results. Much time has been spent to get this correct for the Lennard ShelfÆs own set of circumstances. Employees and associated companies must expect continuing changes and improvement as Western Metals strives to continually improve its management systems and employee rosters.

Due to collapsing copper prices during 1974/75, a rapid changeover was made at the C.S.A. mine from mechanised cut and fill stoping with incline access to the more economic long hole open stoping method. In 1974/75, 20 per cent of total production came from open stopes. For the 1976/77 year-to- date, more than 80 per cent of total production has been won from open stopes. As a result, mining performance has improved considerably. Stops, drilling performance has increased by more than 50 per cent since the changeover from extension rod, 50 mm diameter cut and fill uphole drilling to 115 mm diameter in-the-hole hammer drilling of holes up to 65 m long. Stops blasting performance has improved from 750 tonnes to 950 tonnes blasted per manshift. Open stope primary blasting per- formance is much higher, but reduces to 950 tonnes per manshift when secondary blasting and firing of hung drawpoints are taken into consideration. Ground control, the most expensive and least productive aspect of cut and fill mining, is almost entirely eliminated in long hole open stoping.

The collapse of the I.T.C., the subsequent fall in the price of Tin, and the lifting of quotas saw the Renison concentrator resuming full seven- day operations at maximum capacity in 1985/86. Performance was sus- tained in terms of grade and recovery, and in some areas improved, over this period. A further challenge was declining head grades, and the need to treat higher proportions of less amenable ore types. The complexity of the flowsheet and the method of mining and ore handling predisposes the process to unstable operation, and solving this problem comprises a major component of the current development effort. The concentrator has an imbalance of capacity between processes, and excess in some areas is being adapted to enhance the capacity of others. Magnetic susceptibility of various minerals is being exploited to greater effect. Significant performance gains are achievable by improving exist- ing unit process efficiency, particularly in grinding, gravity processes and Cassiterite Flotation. This paper reviews the metallurgical developments, both recently implemented and planned for this year, which have contributed to main- taining Renison Limited in a competitive position in the post I.T.C. Tin industry.
