Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in Fine Grinding of Copper Sulfide Minerals Using a Pilot-Scale Stirred Media Mill - IsaMill The mineral liberation size of run of mine ores has dramatically reduced over recent years. As a result, the demand for fine grinding which is the most energy-intensive form of grinding has markedly increased in the minerals industry. Furthermore, the fine grinding costs increase exponentially with decreasing product particle size. As a result of the increased energy requirement for fine grinding, it is desirable to optimise fine grinding processes such as stirred media milling (ie IsaMill) to enhance energy efficiency, throughput and the product fineness. In the present study, the influence of slurry rheology, grinding media type and grinding media-to-feed size ratio on energy efficiency in a pilot-scale IsaMill was investigated under certain industrially relevant pulp processing conditions. It was shown that a critical rheological state existed, below which the energy required to achieve an 80 per cent passing (ie P80) 20 ¦m product size was unaffected by shear rheology (ie apparent viscosity and shear yield stress) whilst above which the grinding energy required increased dramatically with increasing shear rheology. Colorado River sand (3.35 mm) showed higher energy efficiency than MT1 ceramic media (2.5 mm) for a target P80 of 20 ¦m in the solids concentration range of 38 to 55 per cent by weight, but the former experienced more than four times the wear rate of the later. The high wear rate of the Colorado River sand may be due to its much lower hardness. For feeds with an 80 per cent passing (ie F80) 70 to 110 ¦m, 2.0 or 2.5 mm MT1 media appeared to be more energy efficient than 3.5 mm MT1 media whilst a media-to-feed size ratio of 41 to 53 is applicable for ~50 ¦m (ie F80) feeds for efficient grinding.

The combustion characteristics of Australian coals which contain high inertinite have been studied in a laboratory drop tube furnace and a Thermogravimetric Analyser. The pyrolysis chars and combustion residues were microscopically characterised using a modified coal petrography technique. Results indicated that the overall burnout of inertinite-rich Australian coals under pulverised fuel combustion conditions could be generally within a range of 97 - 99 per cent burnout. The studies showed that poor coal burnout cannot be generally related to high inertinite content in the Australian coals. The extent of coal burnout varies from coal to coal and vitrinite as well as inertinite may contribute to the unbumt chars in combustion residues. Combustion conditions had greater influence over char formation and coal burnout than the coal properties. However, under similar pf combustion conditions, coal rank and coal maceral composition had a strong influence over the coal combustion behaviours and final coal burnout. Simple correlations using coal properties may be used but with caution to determine coal volatile release and burnout at high temperature and rapid heating conditions.

Granulation of iron ore fines into robust granules is critical to successful sintering and blast furnace operations in iron and steelmaking. Iron and steelmakers desire iron ore granules with high strength, uniform size distribution and low fuel consumption to enhance efficient sintering operation. Unlike hematite ore, magnetite concentrates do not granulate easily at low binder dosage to yield coarser granules due to the absence of nucleus particles. This motivates the present study to harness the complementary properties of hematite ore to enhance granulation of magnetite concentrates via blending. The current state-of-the-art in hematite and magnetite blend granulation is reviewed, along with granule property limitations. Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013. Laboratory-Scale Magnetohydrostatic Separator for High Resolution Density Analysis of Plastic and Other Wastes Recycling and reuse of different plastic wastes is still a current problem to solve for process engineers and it is true for seeking industrial applications as well as for smaller laboratory-scale, where a given waste sample, plastic or even metallic, has to be precisely separated into narrow density fractions to gain data for industrial design or for scientific research. The principle of magnetohydrostatic separators are known even there are industrial size machines but our primary aim was the development of a laboratory-scale separator for analysis of particles of densities up to 6 kg/L and sizes up to 8 mm. Main parts of the built experimental equipment are the ferrite core with two high power coils. The shape of the ferrite core at the two sides of the separator channel was specially designed to produce isodynamic magnetic field. In these places the ferrite core was constructed from laser cut ferrite sheets. The development of the high power electric supply for the two coils was a real challenge because the high voltage and current (400 V, 30 A) and because it had to be precisely regulated for being able to set discrete relative forces on the particles. Two separator channels were made from transparent plastic. The magnetic fluid is circulated by a centrifugal pump, fresh feed is supplied by a vibrated feeder and products can be taken by built in samplers. The velocity profile in the separator channel is measured by an ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Paper reports about the development and itself of the magnetohydrostatic separator and about some fundamental and applied laboratory experiments with different reference particles and wastes from used cars and electrical appliances.

Global steel companies are actively combating climate change by reducing carbon emissions. Traditional steel production, using the blast furnace (BF) – basic oxygen furnace (BOF) process, heavily depends on coal and emits substantial CO2. To mitigate this, companies are transitioning to the more eco-friendly DRP (direct reduction plant) – EAF (electric arc furnace) process, which lowers CO2 emissions. This study quantitatively evaluates the impact of increased hydrogen consumption on the carbon footprint of product (CFP) through an analysis of direct reduction process heat and mass balances. The study prioritises a comprehensive material balance based on mass conservation principles. The heat balance is calculated using differences in enthalpy through state energy properties, avoiding heat consumption. Validation using operational data from Hyundai Steel Dangjin works’ blast furnaces shows close alignment between calculated results and actual data, with less than 1 per cent error. This methodology facilitates a detailed analysis of the direct reduction process, offering insights into its feasibility and efficiency. Analysis of the operational impact by increasing the hydrogen ratio demonstrates reduced CO2 emissions and increased heat requirements due to the endothermic nature of hydrogen reduction, in contrast to the exothermic CO reduction. Possible solutions include raising reducing gas temperature or enhancing flow rate. The study effectively utilises designed heat and mass balances to assess material quantities and thermal balance under different operational conditions. It lays the foundation for the initial direct reduction process design, aiding in deriving and optimising operational parameters. Additionally, it provides valuable insights into the challenges of increased hydrogen, contributing to the production of greener steel by addressing these issues.

Rock bolts are important in underground mining as they provide support to the rock mass around the excavation. They are the most common reinforcement method in mining and civil engineering excavations. The length of the bolts, types and spacing between them can be varied, depending on the reinforcement requirements and the use case (Kolapo, Onifade and Praise, 2022). The rock bolt provides safety and stability for the rock mass in the excavation area and they can be mechanically anchored, grouted, or friction anchored. They normally don’t have a measurement option and there is a possibility that it failed without showing visible signs on the surface, especially in grouted rebar bolts where they can still have some residual strength. Therefore, support functionality can be lost without recognising it. To overcome that, sensors can be installed on all three previously mentioned bolt systems. Intelligent bolts with implemented measuring systems have a function of showing changes and indicating if there is some damage on the bolt. So, it can be said that intelligent rock bolts are regular bolts equipped with additional instruments which are helping us detect potential instabilities inside of the rock mass or malfunction of the bolt itself. Changes in rock mass can be tracked, by measuring rock bolt reaction concerning the excavation response. Rock mass damage and instabilities are therefore measured in terms of rock mass deformation. Moreover, other additional information depending on the type of the sensor device could be collected. Based on such measurements, information about rock mass state can be derived. Different rock bolt types work at different reaction principles. Therefore, limitations on sensor application and information that can be extracted must be considered.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

Artificial ground freezing is the unrivalled method for groundwater control during mine shaft sinking. Moreover, ground freezing may also provide temporary ground support. The fast development of fibre-optic temperature monitoring devices, three-dimensional freeze pipe survey methods and numerical modelling software provide grounds for developing new and reliable tools for ground control during freeze shaft sinking. This paper presents examples of predictive numerical models that are based on back-analysis and calibration of temperature data that covers the complete construction cycle from pre-freezing through to artificial thawing. The back-analyses showed that standard numerical models are not capable of predicting the prevailing thermo-mechanical conditions satisfactorily. This paper describes the development and implementation of new tools for improved consideration of concrete hydration and latent heat, along with the introduction of other algorithms that improve and simplify the efforts of managing complex numerical models. A function is presented that allows for an automated correction of the model’s mesh based on results of three-dimensional freeze pipe surveys. This paper demonstrates that the latter consideration is important, because the often employed assumption of idealised freeze circle geometry in numerical models impacts on the accuracy of such model’s predictions. Subsequently, the verification of these extended numerical models is demonstrated. Due to its flexibility, the FLAC3DTM code was employed for the numerical modelling. This software provides the possibility of implementing additional functions written in internal FISH or Python language into the models. It is concluded that state-of-the-art techniques for freeze hole drilling and surveying, on-site monitoring and advanced numerical analysis provide a significant potential for both the design and the operation of largescale ground freezing measures. The application of the extended numerical models for predictive simulations during construction allows for temporary shaft lining optimisation, for assisting in operational decision making and for compensating temporary loss of monitoring data. The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.

At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. That electricity is an important and valuable agent, the limit of whose capacity for utilisation is as yet unknown, is a truism; although enormous advances have been made, the possible developments are yet greater. Mining, along with other industries, shares already to a large extent in the practical utilisation of this agent. Electrical engineers have been employed for several years past in developing and applying electricity to all classes of machinery, and for every purpose where power is required and in no instance, that the writer is aware of, has its use been curtailed in favour of any other agency now known, while extensions are continually made. The first modern electric motor was shown at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, and it was used to work a pump through a mile length of cable but it was not before 1878, that an electric motor was put into daily commercial use by Messrs. Chretian and Felix to work a beet sugar hoist. This early plant effected a saving of 40 % as compared with hand work.In 1879, the first Electric Railway was constructed for the Berlin Exhibition, and in the same year, Mr. T. A. Edison was running an experimental line at Menlo Park. The first electric line opened for the public, was constructed by Siemens and Halske, in 1881, at Lichtenfelde, and was 11 miles in length.

In the north of the Netherlands, in the environment of Harlingen, an industrial waste incinerator was installed in 2011. The population in the region is concerned about adverse health effects related to possible emission of dioxins. This study compares the relative merit and reliability of four sampling approaches aimed at quantifying the possible pollution patterns surrounding the incinerator: short-term versus long-term isokinetic flue gas sampling, spatial sampling of grasses and a novel approach developed by the Toxicowatch Foundation, based on local composite sampling of ten eggs from backyard chickens (local area pollution load averaging by accumulating bio-entities). Based on the latter approach results of a new analytical bioassay, DR CALUX®, from 15 locations near Harlingen harbour show distinct above-threshold dioxin levels in the environs of the incinerator. Currently only short-term flue gas sampling is mandated by the authorities; based hereupon, under normal operating conditions, the incinerator appears to be compliant with emission standards. This short-term sampling scheme is seriously flawed, however, in that it only demands one continuous 12-hour sampling period per annum – an extreme grab sampling transgression in the time domain. In starkest possible contrast, significantly elevated dioxins emissions were measured in flue gas during events of unstable combustion conditions by continuous long-term measurements. The dioxin congener patterns from long-term flue gas sampling show similar patterns as the congeners found in backyard chicken eggs and grass, evidence that elevated dioxins in eggs is due to emissions from the incinerator. These results make it mandatory to perform long-term, continuous measurements for all sources where similar high-temperature combustion/emission processes take place. Backyard chicken eggs are a prevalent regional bio-accumulating sample type in rural and agricultural regions, which is relevant to air pollution emission monitoring. There are interesting relationships between this type of sampling bio-sensors and the special bioassay DR CALUX® features, which, although quite outside traditional contexts, never-the-less all can be well understood in the context of the Theory of Sampling. We venture to unravel the complex interactions between correct and incorrect sampling errors and the extraordinary complicated analytical issues involved in monitoring and source tracking using accumulating bio-sensors. Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.

Declining metal prices over the last few years have reduced the number of new metallurgical plants being built and limited opportunities for introducing new processes. However, technological advances are still being made. With increasing economic pressures, the emphasis is now on reducing unit costs by making equipment larger and through use of technologies with lower operating costs. This trend can be seen in the increasing size of grinding mills and flotation cells used in recent plant designs and in the adoption of HPGR crushing as an alternative to SAG milling. Few new technologies achieve widespread introduction until there are clear economic or operational drivers. These might currently include: ò          increasingly stringent environmental standards; ò          availability of exotic materials for equipment construction; ò          increasingly sophisticated instrumentation and control systems; ò          the need to treat increasingly refractory oretypes; and ò          the length of supply routes to many new plants. As a result of these drivers, a number of new and revitalised technologies will get increasing prominence in the design of new operations, such as: ò          use of ultrafine milling equipment such as MIM's Isamill for treatment of refractory gold ore concentrates; ò          use of thiourea as an alternative for cyanide in sensitive locations; ò          novel hydrometallurgical routes for treating base metal ores in remote locations; ò          paste thickening for tailings deposition; and intensive cyanidation of gravity concentrate

This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

Much has been written about leadership over the years. It is probably one of the most written about but least understood and defined concepts in business. Leadership and management are often confused and blurred, and inspirational words such as mentor, coach, motivator and the like, are often interspersed when describing a leader. There are a few things we do know about leadership:The only thing common to all leaders is that they are different.Leadership is not the sole domain of business; it applies to every aspect of human endeavour. We are all required to lead at times, and we all have it in our ability to lead. There is no set of predetermined competencies, which a leader must possess to be effective. Hence there is no course in the world that can teach you to become a leader. There is no such thing as the perfect leader. Leadership is a verb, not a title; you actually have to do it to be judged a leader. All leaders no matter how you define the term, must leave a legacy. Thus in the busy world we all live in, what are the lessons in leadership that we can all learn from, that will assist us all in our pursuit of leadership. The purpose of today is to put forward a framework for leadership that I have been researching and working on for many years. It is not the definitive framework, merely a framework. Out of today you will take your own collective thoughts, learnings, observations, experiences, education and training, and collective wisdom, and apply it to yourself.

Located in the north-west of Kazakhstan is a world-class podiform chromite deposit. Donskoy mining and beneficiation complex (DGOK), a branch of Kazchrome TNC, which is a subsidiary of the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) operates two underground mines in this area, one of which is the ‘10th Anniversary of Kazakhstan Independence’ (DNK) mine.The mine currently applies the gravity caving mining method, producing 1.8 Mt/a of ore utilising a slusher layout and rail transport to the hoisting shafts. The deeper zones form the largest mineral resources at the DNK mine and are planned to be developed in the next several years. At this depth, the generally poor ground conditions, combined with the high in situ stress state will potentially lead to extremely challenging mining conditions.This paper describes a technical study undertaken by SRK to determine the possibility of increasing the maximum production rate from the currently envisaged 6.0 Mt/a to 7.2 Mt/a, and to reduce the time taken to steady state production.Based on a newly created 3D model, the inclined caving method was proposed for the largest orebodies. This method, presently not implemented at any operating mine, although planned for two other projects, was deemed very suitable to deal with the weak rock mass characteristics and the plunging morphology of the mineralisation.Dassault Systèmes’ GEOVIA’s Footprint Finder software (a module of GEOVIA’s PCBC™) was used to determine the caving zones and production schedules. The total mine design was completed in Deswik software, and resulting schedules combined in Excel.In addition to the use of an inclined caving method, several other suggestions were made to increase the productivity of the mine, such as the application of a conveyor belt system transporting multiple material types, teleremote technologies and the application of thin sprayed liners to reduce the swelling of the rock mass.CITATION:Fuykschot, J J and Loewen, S M, 2016.
