Power Plant. The power for the metallurgical operations is supplied by the company's own power plant, which is centrally situated. Power is also supplied to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd., both being adjacently situated to this company'sworks.The power supplied is direct current, 250 volts, and is obtained from direct-current generators coupled to turbines and to Belliss & Morcom triple expansion engines.The steam supply is obtained from Babcock & Wilcox water tubular boilers, the fuel used being drawn from the South Coast coal mines.Transport. - The works are connected by standard broad gauge railway to both the jetties and the Government railway. Two steam and three electric locomotives are employed in this service.In addition to its own requirements, transport is provided to Metal Manufactures Ltd. and Australian Fertilizers Ltd.The various operating departments are connected by a 2-ft. gauge railway operated by Jeffrey electric locomotives.Ore Storage and Sample Mill - These departments are connected by broad gauge line to the Government railway and jetties. All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. Magnetic methods have for a long time been used in the search for iron ore. In fact the first recorded geophysical prospecting was the use of a magnetic compass to locate iron ore in the Kuruna region in Sweden as early as 1640.The largest magnetic anomaly discovered, about 700,000 gamma-s, is in this region.The enormous deposits in Russia in the Kursk region, where the ore consists largely of magnetite, were discovered by magnetic methods. Heiland estimates the proved reserves at 290,000 million tons and the additional potential deposits at twice this amount.These magnetite ores Show extremely high magnetic anomalies and consequently very insensitive instruments could be used to survey them. The first aerial magnetic surveys were carried out in this area in 1928.Large areas of the iron ore producing regions in Norway, Sweden and the United States have been covered by magnetic surveys in the past 30 years, much of the work being started after the first World War.In every major iron ore producing country, except Australia, extensive magnetic surveys have been, or are, carried out with the purpose of extending the reserves of ore. Australia is indeed fortunate that the depletion of iron ore reserves and the location of new deposits has not become an urgent problem. Nevertheless, some minor reconnaissance work has already been carried out in Australia, and the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics is contemplating a more extended aerial magnetometer survey in the Middleback Ranges area. The need for a carefully prepared set of special conditions, to be used with general conditions of contract or, alternatively, a purpose written contract for adoption in tunnelling work in Australia is discussed. Recent decisions on the proprietor's liability for tender information and arbitrator's power to award interest are examined. A new clause for inclusion in contracts specifically giving arbitrators power to award interest is suggested. Similarly, a new clause covering delays due to environmental disputes is suggested, particularly for marine outfall tunnels. An alternative method for the settlement of disputes by negotiation is suggested for consideration and contracts and contract administration are discussed as the possible weak point in the construction process. At the conference it is intended to present a method or process to be used in contract administration which should reduce disputes, result in a better quality and efficiency of administration and ultimately in better contracts'.

The Barrick Gold Granny Smith underground operation located at the Wallaby deposit is currently in a transition period from a near surface operation in ramp up mode to a fully operational deep mining operation with annual production exceeding 1 Mt/a. A key element in this process has been the project execution of the Wallaby Deeps project from initial scoping study in 2007 to the major production component of the Wallaby operation by 2013.The Wallaby Deeps project serves as an example of how an ongoing detailed study program can be integrated into a day to day mining operation assessing risk and mining application in a perceived challenging narrow vein geotechnical environment prior to mining. A detailed study phase to feasibility level is carried out prior to the mining each zone of Wallaby with mining approval only granted on study completion with full justification.A central element in this process is an optimisation study that utilising the Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) and Schedule Optimisation Tool (SOT) software tools developed by AMIRA Ltd PRIMO research project is used to carry out an NPV value based option study. This optimisation process being then tempered to reality by a predefined practicality assessment process utilising extensive peer review by operational and study team members as well as industry experts.Other challenges facing the Wallaby Deeps project include the requirement to maintain the ramp up production profile to full production by 2012 without disruption but with pressures of an ongoing geological resource to reserve conversion program essential for the study process and mining approvals and also development rate achievement.To date these challenges are being met with integrated planning and the value of the study program itself. Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

I would like to start by thanking The AusIMM and CSIRO for organising this excellent conference and inviting me to give a keynote address. Today I will focus on some broad observations of our industry, and leave the technical discussion to my colleagues who are presenting specific papers covering a wide range of topics. In preparation for this paper, I did a little research into the early history of the Pilbara iron ore industry. I was fascinated to read a quote attributed to Harry P Woodward, the Government Geologist in the late 19th century, before Federation. Mr Woodward described the Pilbara as an iron ore country and observed that æthere is enough to supply the whole world should the present sources be worked outÆ. Mr WoodwardÆs prediction could be viewed as wishful thinking and certainly at Hamersley Iron I would gladly envisage the Pilbara supplying the worldÆs entire iron ore needs! In reality, Western Australia accounted for 162 million tonnes or 36 per cent of seaborne trade in 2001. An impressive effort, but not quite the total world supply as Mr Woodward imagined. But we shouldnÆt dismiss these historical musings out of hand û perhaps we could see it as a challenge for the industry to æwork outÆ the present sources. We all know there is abundant iron ore in the Pilbara, and I expect it is only a matter of time until our collective technical expertise and sheer hard work will enable us to utilise its greater range of ore types. Opening up new markets will be a key pathway to creating additional value from the Pilbara ores. Today I will examine the state of play of our industry and the major influences that shape our business at present, before considering what the future might hold for us. I canÆt guarantee the accuracy of my crystal ball, but the stability and long-term nature of our industry does enable some reasonable hypotheses on where we are heading. I will also spend some time examining the way in which the iron ore producers are working to maximise the value of their resource base and obtain more from their existing capital assets.

Vein swarms in metamorphic terranes such as the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand provide evidence of past hydrothermal flow systems leading to fault initiation and reactivation. A major episode of hydrofracturing and fluid redistribution occurred during early Cretaceous exhumation of the schist belt. As a result, presently exposed lower greenschist facies greyschists in NW Otago are pervaded by abundant quartz-filled hydraulic extension fractures with associated normal faults hosting quartz¦scheelite¦gold mineralisation. Once the effects of Cenozoic folding have been removed, a regional subhorizontal schist foliation contains an aligned array of subvertical hydrofractures striking NNW, striking parallel to a set of low-slip conjugate normal faults; the array extends over an area >1500 km2 and over a depth interval >5 km. The hydrofracture array comprises a mesh of interlinked extensional-shear and pure extension veins. These veins show mutually cross-cutting relations. Callie underground gold mine is part of the Newmont Tanami Operations, and is now the primary provider of ore to the Granites processing Mill. The Callie underground mine has produced in excess of 7.6 million tonnes (Mtpa) of ore, since production began in 1998, with a current production rate of 1.9 Mtpa. Callie underground uses sublevel open stoping with extraction through a combination of primary and secondary stopes. The primary stope filling strategy utilises cement aggregate fill (CAF) to allow full recovery of secondary stopes. The Callie backfill operation has had a continuous testing program in place during this time, which has resulted in a great deal of information available for post fill analysis. All CAF placement into primary stopes for Callie has been via surface boreholes and this has given Callie mine an understanding of some of the issues related to borehole design, type of linings to use depending on angle, depth and quantity of fill into stopes. Finally backfill barricades at Callie have undergone a number of changes during the time to optimise the design based on whether CAF or sand fill is used. This paper discusses the CAF backfill practices and testing methods used for backfilling operations at Callie.

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

The purpose of this work is to determine the equilibrium-state of the aqueous-solution which is produced by the leaching processes, including natural weathering of pyrite minerals. The latter can lead to acid-mine-drainage (AMD). The ferric iron species (Fe3+) resulting from bacteria-catalysed oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+), in the presence of water and air, is known to bring about steady-dissolution of minerals chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2), and so forth. Good-aeration, relatively high-porosity and sufficient bacterial activity tend to promote leaching in waste-rock-dumps. The composition of the aqueous-phase that accumulates in the pore-space (or in open-pits) is of practical interest as it would strongly influence the leaching of both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Since the reactions among the various ionic species occur relatively fast, the solution-phase may be regarded as approaching a state of virtual-equilibrium and it is possible to determine by computation the respective concentrations of the many dissolved species. For the Cu-Fe-H-O-S system, these species may include: H+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, SO42-, OH-, CuSO4o, H2O, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(SO4)+, Fe(HSO4)+, Fe(HSO4)2+, and Fe(SO4)2-. The aqueous-system which may be constituted from appropriate mole-quantities of H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 is in fact the result of various natural processes (reactions) and due respect must be accorded to the extents of these reactions. The present model computes the equilibrium molalities of the foregoing ionic and neutral aqueous species, using the iterative equilibrium constant method that ensures strict-adherence to charge-balance and elemental molar-balance constraints. The dissolving sulfide-minerals (FeS2, CuFeS2) consume Fe2(SO4)3, H2O, and O2 and yield FeSO4, H2SO4, and CuSO4 while the aqueous-phase tends to become progressively acidic (declining pH) reflecting the gradual increase in the extents of sulfide-dissolution reactions. The equilibrium-state of the solution-phase is computed for specific set of values for the extents of respective reactions. The temperature and pressure of the system are 25¦ C (298.15 K) and 101.325 kPa (1.0 atm), respectively. The mica-like minerals such as the biotite [H2K(Mg,Fe)3Al(SiO4)3] tend to consume much of the H2SO4(aq), with the extracted K+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and Al3+ ionic species accumulating in the solution. The precipitation of the jarosites (potassium, hydronium, or ammonium) contributes to the removal of ferric and ferrous species from the solution-phase. In the present work, the emphasis is on predicting the compositions of the aqueous- and condensed-phases with advancing time or increasing æextent of reactionÆ. The results of such calculations are compared to published data on raw AMD (acid-mine-drainage).

Particle Mechanics and the Design of Cyclone Tribochargers Triboelectric separation is a dry electrostatic technique that has shown promise in several particle processing applications. A tribocharger uses contact or friction to differentially charge particles of different materials, which are then separated by an electric field. The initial tribocharging process is poorly understood, with tribocharger design and operation largely a matter of trial and error. A better physical understanding of tribocharger operation would therefore be of immense value in the optimisation of triboelectric separation processes. A combination of charge measurements, trajectory modelling and high-speed video has been used to relate charging to particle mechanics in a cylindrical pneumatic cyclone, one of the most effective tribochargers for mineral separation applications, and the preliminary results are presented here. The consequences of these observations for cyclone tribocharger design and operation, and for tribocharger design in general, are discussed.

All too often engineers and project teams focus on building æthingsÆ, and they tend to see the key goals as meeting the project cost and schedule targets. We frequently compound the problem by unknowingly rewarding engineers for building bigger, more complex, more æbullet proofÆ and hence more costly æthingsÆ. Unfortunately the end result all too often ends up being a disappointment in terms of business performance. The term æshareholder valueÆ may never have entered the discussions during the development process. This paper deals with the fundamental issues, which tend to pre-dispose new developments to success or to failure. As project management concepts are not particularly complex, it begs the question why is it that the failure rate of new developments is so high? It is argued that the answer lies more in people behaviour issues than in project management tools and processes.

Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of preconcentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal sub systems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. In choosing the subject for my address to you this evening I was actuated by the knowledge that in the past Australian metallurgical problems have been solved by the introduction of extremely interesting processes. Frequently such processes originated in this country, or at least were first adopted here on a large scale.Chronologically there comes to mind the application of chlorination to the Mount Morgan ores from 1888 onwards.Then the application of pyritic smelting to the Mount Lyell ore body in 1896, followed closely by the successful flotation of zinc blendÇ! at Broken Hill, about 1900, and the treatment of the refractory Kalgoorlie gold ores by roasting and cyaniding. With the development of the differential flotation process at Broken Hill came the production of a slime lead concentrate carrying zinc which necessitated the use of a high zinc slag in the lead smelting process. Although previously considered impossible, the necessarytechnique was successfully evolved at Port Pirie resulting in the accumulation of large tonnages of zinc-bearing slag as potential sources of that metal. The past twenty years have witnessed:-(a) The establishment of a flourishing iron and steel industry, with its attendant coking and by-product plant at two centres in New South Wales, namely, Newcastle and Port Kembla.(b) The establishment of an electrolytic zinc process at Risdon in Tasmania.*Presidential Address, Melbourne, 20th August, 1936.

Restoration trials established in 1985 included a treatment where pasture seed was sown directly into fertilised tailings. After seven years, accumulated soil data was used to compare physical and chemical changes in the plots with the original tailings control area nearby.   A known amount of annual fertiliser additions over the seven year period allowed nutrient balances to be calculated. Losses of S and P were relatively high at 72% of applied S and 28% of applied P. Calculations show that at least 240 kg N/ha/yr was fixed by clovers and this is likely to be under-estimated given that the calculation did not allow for leaching losses.
