The Golden Cross mine was an open-pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998. Closure of the mine has been based on an approach agreed among stakeholders. The initial phase was the release of a closure plan which was regarded as the blueprint for the following phases and the closure works required to implement the plan. The second phase involved lodgment of consent applications and their granting for the final water management configuration. The final phase is monitoring, confirmation that the site is performing as required by the closure plan and consents and settlement of final ownership, management and surety arrangements. Industry best practice modelling techniques have been used to finalise closure design and have been shown to be good predictors of site water management and discharge performance. Site discharges are in compliance with toxicology based water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life and most discharges from the site, including those from the closed cyanide-tailings facility, can now be discharged without further active intervention or treatment.

From a detailed combustion testing program and earlier experience with Leigh Creek coal, the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) gained a wide insight into the use of low rank coal fired boiler plant. This work is fundamental for the selection of boiler design parameters and other details which in turn determine the correct coal deposit selection for future power station development. In addition it gives boiler designers a good indication of the measures required to give reliable plant operation. Extrapolation from experience with existing plant, the designers main source of information, was not considered appropriate because of the lack of experience with similar coals. Brown coal beneficiation is also being assessed by ETSA in an attempt to improve the coal quality by the pretreatment of the raw coal prior to combustion in future coal.fired boilers. ETSA is also involved in the development of circulating fluid bed and gasification processes to determine whether these alternative processes are a more viable method of utilising the South Australian coals than pulverised fuel firing.

pNumerical modelling has been used to examine the relationship between the results of two commonly used methods of assessing the propensity of coal to spontaneous combustion, the R70 and Relative Ignition Temperature tests, and the likely behaviour in situ. The criticality of various parameters has been examined and a method of utilising critical self-heating parameters has been developed. This study shows that on their own, the laboratory test results do not provide a reliable guide to in situ behaviour but can be used in combination to considerably increase the ability to predict spontaneous combustion behaviour./p

THIS mine, which is the property of the S. and M. Syndicate, London, is located at Moina, in North-West Tasmania, 18 miles from Stavertorr railway station and 36 miles from Devonport. There are metalled roads from both of these places, and, althoughhilly, these are good for team or motor traffic. Mails and passengers are provided for by a tri-weekly coach service from Sheffield, a railway town, distant 23 miles. The Moina mining field is situated on a main spur between the Forth and Iris Rivers, andat an elevation ranging from about 500 ft. above sea-level at the Forth River to 2400 ft. at the All Nations mine. The elevation at the mine office of the S. and M. mine is 1900 ft. The average annual rainfall, as recorded for the past eight years, is. 68 in.This inclildes, however, a couple of years during which the rainfall was much above normal, and taken over a longer period 60 in. would be nearer the average.

Geochemical projects in progress or recently completed in the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics (BMR) cover a wide range of topics and include research projects, regional studies, and prospecting programmes. However, in these notes emphasis is given to projects which are directly relevant to mineral exploration.FIELD INVESTIGATIONSStream sediment sampling, rock and soil sampling, and geobotanical surveys have been used by the BMR in a number of areas, partly in attempts to locate specific zones of mineralization, and partly to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods under different conditions of climate and topopraphy and in different geological settings.Stream sediment sampling has been most successful in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. For example, in the South Sepik area, zones of disseminated su1phide mineralisation were found to give rise to anomalies with peak values of up to 1,000 p.p.m. copper, compared with background values of about 40 p.p.m. (Dow et al., 1968). By contrast, the results of rather limited work in the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley district of Westen Australia were inconclusive.Rock and soil sampling, on the other hand, was successfully used in a number of areas in Northern Australia, particularly at Rum Jungle and Tennant Creek.Rum Jungle area In the Rum Jungle area, where uranium and base metal mineralization is mainly associated with a Lower Proterozoic black slate sequence, samples, of c-horizon soil or weathered 'rock are generally collectedfrom the bottom of drill holes, usually 15 to 20 ft deep, bored with a power-operated auger.Surface sampling indicates that such a technique would probably have shown up all the major geochemical anomalies delineated by deep sampling, but the latter gives slightly more consistent and slightly

The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. Sequencing of large underground firings is a critical aspect of blast performance. Using theory developed in open cut operations, where blast results are easier to quantify, a new technique for sequencing underground mass blasts has been developed. The basis for the technique is to identify timing regimes to control fragmentation and relief then apply non-electrics to fit these criteria. The use of computer software to graphically interpret delay statistics enables the evaluation of designs in a realistic manner.

The objective, of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at IncoÆs Stobie mine, was to conduct a long-term field evaluation of selected diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, available to the underground mining industry. Nine state-of-the-art DPF systems were retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and were subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (in 2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durabilities of the tested DPF systems. During efficiency tests, the vehicles/engines were operated over several steady-state operating conditions. Various instruments were used to measure particulate and gaseous emissions upstream and downstream of the filter systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. Experience with the operational issues related to deployment of the filter systems on underground mining vehicles, coupled with the assessment of the filtration efficiencies, were the primary objectives of the study. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the various types. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of regeneration, the long-term operational reliability, and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions.

HoistEM is a helicopter-towed time domain electromagnetic system. This paper presents details of the towed array structure (the Hoist) as well as a description of the instrumentation. A comparison between HoistEM and ground TDEM (from which HoistEM was derived) is given. Over 50 000 line kilometres of HoistEM have been completed to date and datasets for structural mapping, nickel, base metals, manganese, ground water and bathymetry are presented and discussed.

The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

In flotation where a bulk flotation concentrate is produced or a gangue sulfide such as pyrite contaminates a concentrate, residual collector has to be removed from the sulfide surfaces to allow selective separation in a subsequent flotation step. Depending on the sulfide mineral, the main species that needs to be removed when using a xanthate collector is either a metal xanthate or dixanthogen. For the identification of surface species, specific solvents may be used to remove each species û metal xanthates are known to be soluble in acetone whilst dixanthogens are known to be soluble in non-polar solvents such as diethyl ether. Xanthates break down with time, temperature and pH into various decomposition products. The major decomposition product is dixanthogen which can aid flotation but other products such as perxanthate and carbon disulfide can have an adverse effect on flotation. Various analytical techniques can be employed to monitor the formation of decomposition products on the surface of the mineral and in solution. The best of these is ultraviolet spectroscopy as it has diagnostic peaks for decomposition product determination. In this work two approaches were taken to understand the relationship between the flotation of a chalcopyrite and pyrite from an ore containing these two minerals. One approach was to remove the xanthate species with an organic solvent and then use ultraviolet spectroscopy to determine the concentration of dissolved species. The second method involved measuring xanthate decomposition in solution by measuring the residual xanthate concentration using ultraviolet spectroscopy. These experiments confirmed the species adsorb at the surface of the mineral and how these species affect the recovery and grade of the valuable mineral. In both cases pH and temperature were varied and two xanthate collectors (SEX and PAX) were used to study these relationships. These relationships could be applied to industrial flotation systems and allow for more accurate determination of optimal xanthate dosage and hence save on reagent costs.

THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

"In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016. At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. The granite porphyry dyke has a thickness of up to 40 m, extends discontinuously for about 8 km, and intrudes thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The granite dyke and gold-bearing sulphide and quartz-siderite veins within it have been deformed and recrystallised during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous.   The unaltered granite porphyry is composed of phenocrysts of perthite, arfvedsonite, aegerine and quartz in a groundmass of the same minerals, with accessory ilmenite, rutile and fluorite. K-Ar dates of amphibole from the granite gave ages of 226 and 246 Ma, but these ages may be a minimum due to resetting during the thermal and deformation events that have affected the area. Unpublished Ar-Ar data on amphibole from the granite show disturbed spectra with high temperature steps around 300-315 Ma, which is consistent with the age of A-type granites in the Buller region. Further age dating of primary and hydrothermal minerals in the granite is continuing. At least three stages of hydrothermal alteration have been identified in the granite. Stage I alteration is characterised by high fO2 magnetite-siderite ¦ biotite, which is cut by thin quartz-pyrite veinlets (Stage II). These are cut by Stage III sulphide, quartz and siderite veins, and pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile ¦ pyrite-siderite-sericite assemblages overprints the earlier alteration stages. Lamprophyre is altered to a siderite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. Stage III sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, deposited by low fO2 H2S fluids. The gold contains 18-30 wt% Ag and up to 1 wt% Bi. Temperature of vein formation was estimated from vein quartz fluid inclusion homogenisation temperatures (Th 260-355oC, average 330oC), arsenopyrite-sphalerite thermometry (310-365oC) and quartz-albite stable isotope thermometry (340oC). The altered granite and the veins have been deformed, and recrystallised and competent sulphide minerals are fractured and brecciated. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

BlastLiteÖ is a low density explosive developed by Dyno Nobel and has been in use at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback Operation since March 2004. The Mt Whaleback Operation utilises BlastLite because it offers an attractive alternative to ANFO in soft to medium strength rock types. Its use also reduces the amount of liquid fuel oil consumed and is well aligned with BHP BillitonÆs corporate Energy Excellence initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents the:results of characterisation work completed on-site as a fourth year mining engineering thesis, and application and benefits of the product at Mt Whaleback. One of the key features of low density products is that the detonation is non-ideal. That is, the explosive does not react fully in the detonation driving zone. This manifests itself in that the product is highly dependent on charge diameter and confinement conditions. Dyno Nobel has access to the Vixen suite of detonation codes for characterising the ideal and non-ideal behaviour of explosives. The objectives of this work were to use the Vixen_i code to characterise the detonation performance of BlastLite, in order to understand the role of the bulking agent and to allow modelling of the explosive. The detonation performance was established by detonating a series of unconfined charges at various diameters and measuring the velocity of detonation (VoD). The work program consisted of sourcing and preparing cardboard tubes of various diameters (80 mm to 305 mm). The tubes were loaded with explosive at the BHP Billiton Iron Ore Mt Whaleback test range and detonated one at a time. Over the past three years BlastLite has been used in various applications across the site. Initial findings illustrate that shovel productivity from BlastLite shots was comparable to the baseline ANFO blasts. The study results were also backed with visual inspection and feedback from shovel operators. A work program is currently in place to develop different blends of BlastLite and TITAN« BlastLite to tailor the explosives to various blasting applications. The trials at Mt Whaleback are leading to future opportunities of BHP BillitonÆs satellite orebodies.

The Telfer main dome open pit is operated by Newcrest Mining Limited at a current production rate of 50 Mt/a from a pit dimension compromising 2 km strike length, 1 km width and 250 m depth. As part of the refeasibility of the Telfer operation undertaken early this decade, Newcrest identified that an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation along with an increased scale of open pit would support a new plant targeting the processing of gold and copper ore at 17 Mt/a rates. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 and broke into the open pit in late 2009. This situation is unique across the mining industry where a cave breakthrough was planned and occurred within an active large open pit operation. The SLC broke though into the west side of the Main Dome open pit into a specially prepared bench that was left at the 5384 RL of cut-back stage 3. A main haulage ramp is within 100 m from the edge of the cave breakthrough zone and this ramp passes down to the active levels which are progressing toward the 5200 RL. This paper presents insight into the mine planning and risk management associated with continued operation of the open pit operation while an active SLC breaks through. The cave breakthrough presents unique areas for risk management as there is potential for rapid propagation and subsidence. To support the undertaking, mine design and major hazard management planning has been carried out. Focus areas include; dual ramp system design, preloading the breakthrough area, monitoring of cave propagation and air gap using a seismic system and deep hole extensometers, wall stability and subsidence monitoring using radar and prism systems, and key trigger and response planning.
