The Charters Towers locality has been a historically renowned gold producing region and discovery of new ore deposits during the past decade have renewed exploration interests in the area. Further mineral exploration with conventional techniques is hindered by the presence of Cainozoic sedimentary deposits and volcanic flows overlying a major portion of the basement geology. Mineral exploration thus warrants new, innovative and cost-effective methods to probe beneath the Cainozoic cover in an attempt to discover new orebodies. There is growing awareness of the role of weathering as an agent of chemical dispersion into the cover sediments as well as a producer of supergene deposits in tectonically stable cratons (Butt and Zeegers, 1992). Consequently, landscape evolution coupled with regolith geochemistry is one of the methods increasingly being used to identify relevant sampling media to explore beneath weathered cover sediments and deeply weathered bedrock terrain (Anand, 1993). The aim of this paper is to describe and elucidate the regolith - landscape features of the region and combine geochemistry to assess the pertinence of the same on mineral exploration strategies in the Charters Towers area.

Tailings facilities tell a story to the public about how the mining industry manages its activities. They also create a risk that must be managed for the long term. All the knowledge and technology is available to safely design, build, operate and decommission tailings facilities.   Tailings at Waikato North Head Minesite are pumped as slurry, over long distances and against high static discharge heads to backfill the excavated area. WNH is, under the mining licence, obliged to reconcile the topography of mined areas to the closest possible resemblance of the original terrain. The active tailings areas are located near main operational facilities and detailed plans and procedures have been developed to ensure a safe and continuous operation.   The concentration plant is designed as two identical and independent plants. Each plant has its own tailings slurry pumping system.   This paper represents a general overview of the tailings disposal practice at WNH mine site. It discusses tailings delivery, construction and water management.

At our Monkland Mine at Gympie, we operate a deep, narrow vein gold mine using hand held equipment, rail mounted haulage and narrow shafts. This is in many respects the old-fashioned way and is well suited most of the orebody geometry exposed to-date. We have also commenced some long hole stoping and we use alimaks for some jobs. The heart of our particular mining style is the employment and retention of experienced miners with remuneration based on productivity. We do our planning/monitoring/supervision down to the level of daily individual productivity. In focussing on cycles per se, we have chosen not to talk about drill and blast cycles or cycles for mine development, stope preparation or drawdown and haulage. Instead we have stepped right back from the operation as presently run and have adopted a very broad view of the mining cycle. We will in this presentation intertwine the ebb and flow of, exploration, project sponsorship, development, production and cash returns to owners. The time line considered spans both history and predicted future.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Associated chloritic veining is indicative of single phase neutral-chloride fluids upwelling in relatively low fracture controlled nenneahility

The effect of the presence of ore pulp on the adsorption rate of gold on activated carbon has been studied. A substantial reduction in the rate occurs when the pulp is present. The reduction in rate appears to be caused by two effects: permanent carbon pore blocking by ore particles and temporary shielding of the carbon particle surface, slowing gold access to the carbon due to the physical presence of the fine pulp. There is no significant effect arising from the presence of a pulp viscosity modifier even for conditions when mass transport dictates the loading rate of carbon in clear Solution.

Gretley Colliery is situated at Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales and is owned and operated by the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Ccnpany, a wholly owned subsidiary of Peko Wallsend Limited. The mine has been an efficient bord and pillar producer by industry standards. However, its continued economic viability was threatened because the bulk of remaining reserves lie in more difficult mining conditions and are of poorer quality. Alternatives were examined to improve productivity and allow Gretley to become more competitive in the current difficult market Environment.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927 - 1928 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr F G Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgoorlie mine, and Mr Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preserved from the Kalgoorlie mine by Mr A E Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection of MrS F C Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and 'weissite', muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

Intrusion related ore deposits are widespread in the Central Peruvian Cordillera Occidental and adjacent high-plains to the east and include porphyry Cu (-Au, Mo; eg Morococha), Cu-Zn (Pb-) skarn (eg Antamina), Pb-Zn-Ag carbonate hosted vein deposits (eg Uchucchacua), cordilleran base metal (eg Cerro de Pasco) and epithermal deposits (eg Quicay). Geochronology and petrochemistry of intrusive rocks associated with mineralisation reveals that: most ore deposits were emplaced in the late middle to early late Miocene; and are related to calc-alkaline granodioritic igneous rocks with Sm/Yb >3, Sr/Y >40 and Y/Th <1.5. The largest deposits, including Antamina, Colquijirca and Cerro de Pasco are associated with intrusions with Sm/Yb >4 and which, as indicated by Pb and Sr isotopic data, have undergone relatively moderate middle and upper crustal assimilation. The chemical signature of igneous rocks related to mineralisation likely reflects melt equilibration in the lower crust at a crustal thickness of more than 45 km. Mineralisation was favoured by a change from normal to flat subduction, resulting in increased compression, crustal thickening and subsequent cessation of the magmatic arc. Premiocene ore deposits do occur, but are restricted to a broad E-W corridor between Uchucchacua and Milpo and probably were controlled by a crustal-scale structural discontinuity across the strike of theAndes. Not all igneous rocks with high Sm/Yb and Sr/Y ratios did acquire their trace element signature in the lower crust. Petrographic and Pb isotopic evidence indicates shallow crustal hornblende fractionation or assimilation of pelitic material as possible causes for high trace element ratios in some rocks. These are apparently unrelated to polymetallic mineralisation. Thus, critical evaluation of petrographic and geochemical data in metallogenetic studies, especially in areas with complex basement architecture such as Central Peru is critical and should not be reduced to simple trace element ratios. The Truong Son fold-thrust belt (TSFTB) is a prominent tectonic component of mainland Indochina that occurs as a north-west–south-east-trending tectonic entity that extends from north-eastern Laos, straddles the Laos-Vietnam border area and is submerged under the sea basin in east central Vietnam. The TSFTB hosts numerous regional-scale gold and polymetallic base metal deposits, and the mineralisation occurs along the strike of the belt; however, the potential of many of these deposits are inadequately evaluated. The ore mineralisation is hosted by different rock assemblages, including highly metamorphosed Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary and/or volcanic packages, which were intruded by several phases of magma and underwent a number of tectonic events. Several ore-forming styles – including porphyry, Carlin-type and sediment-hosted orogenic Au – were formed during at least two phases of regional thermotectonism that have been identified in the TSFTB. However, all of the major gold deposits/mineralisations are closely related to region-wide structural breaks and many of them are controlled by large-scale, high-strain zones. To help meet the challenge of mine finding at the start of the 21st century, the exploration geophysicist will have at his command a powerful range of tools, some new, some improved, and some which already exist today but are as yet little used. Remote sensing, using satellite and aircraft-based multi-spectral scanners, will provide the means for routinely mapping the surface distribution of certain carbonate rocks, clay and ferrous alteration minerals, based on the analysis of solar reflectance spectra. Time and emission-spectral resolved laser-induced fluorescence will likewise map the distribution of certain ore and pathfinder minerals, as well as certain skarn zones, all potentially related to ore deposits. The GPS (Global Positioning System), based on 18 orbitting satellites, will provide a universal, three dimensional, all weather navigation system which will completely supplant all existing aerial navigation systems, and greatly facilitate aerial surveying and automated processing and presentation of the data. Aeromagnetic gradiometer measurements will provide higher geometric resolution which will yield better definition of individual geological units. Multi-method ground geophysical surveys will be greatly expedited through the use of portable microcomputer-based, multi-sensor instruments. These instruments will interface with other intelligent devices for automated processing, presentation and interpretation of the ground field data. Borehole geophysics will come into more general use, both for at-hole measurements, especially using active nuclear techniques for grade determination, and for remote detection using a variety of electrical, magnetic, seismic and other methods.

As the chief field of the gold dredging industry in Otago is the district traversed by the Molyneux River (called above Cromwell the Clutha) and its tributaries, a brief reference to the geology of that region and the origin of its alluvial gold will not be out of place. The prevailing rocks are metamorphic schists, chiefly mica and quartz schists, pr.obably of Silurian age. Though these rocks do not contain many payable quartz reefs, gold appears to be distributed in small quantities all through them,chiefly associated with the quartz lamime and lenses. The river drift, however, contains numerous pebbles of quartzite, quartzoze conglomerate, and fme-grained slate. Seeing that these rocks are hardly known to occur in situ within the watershedof the Molyneux River, though Devonian and carboniferous rocks of similar character occur to the north-east and south-west, it seems probable that the schists were at one time overlaid by carboniferous and Devonian rocks, and that these have been removed by denuding agencies. Be this as it may, it is certain that the schists themselves have been greatly eroded by the action both of water and of ice, and that the resulting drifts have themselves, in many cases, been sorted and re-assorted by the same agents.Consequently the drifts are very varied in character and often developed on a grand scale. In geological age they vary from Early Tertiary (though some may be older) to Recent.

The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. The Thames Goldfi.eld has been a major gold resource in the west of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, with the Waiotahi quartz vein system forming a large part of the field. Mineralisation is hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks. Both massive columnar-jointed and fragmental volcanic rocks are present. The vein system is dominated by the steeply dipping NE striking Waiotahi-Cambria vein, and associated splays. Hydrothermal alteration increases in intensity from isolated blocks of propylitic altered andesitic material, into the intensely clay altered equivalent. Low rank propylitic alteration is typified by chlorite, calcite and pyrite, with local illite or epidote. Clay alteration is characterised by illite, quartz, kaolinite and pyrite. While broadly forming halos around veining, intense clay alteration also occurs in strongly jointed portions of the hostrock.   Vein textures and the intense illitic clay alteration at Thames are similar to those in some of the other epithermal gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic zone, and in deposits of the Philippines, all related to andesitic terranes. Possible causes for textures and alteration being different in these deposits from the more classic Quartz-Adularia-Illite type epithermal systems may be that cooling/mixing rather than boiling dominates fluid evolution. Kaolinite may be also be a product of either of these different fluid types, or has resulted from overprinting of an illitic assemblage by downward percolation of acidic fluid.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) has been con- tinuously involved in the extraction of brown coal from open cut mines in Victoria's Latrobe Valley for over 60 years, but have not completed a major mine. Detailed consideration for rehabilitation at this stage has only been able to be given to overburden disposal areas. Increasing interest in rehabilitation in the 1980's led the SECV to review its existing policies and practices and to embark in 1985 on a public consultation process to establish an agreed and accepted policy. This was extended in 1986 to the consultation process for the rehabilitation planning for the Mor- well Open Cut External Overburden Dump. This paper covers the con- sultative process developed and the lessons learned by the participants.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

This paper describes the behaviour, under creep conditions, of a cast lead creep specimen consisting of five crystals, the boundaries of these crystals being substantially at right angles to the direction' of tension, i.e., across the long axis of the specimen. This particular specimen was obtained in an attempt to produce a single crystal in the manner described in the appendix of a previous paper (1).Thus, the specimen was of the same shape and size, was composed of the same purity lead and received the same preliminary treatment as the single crystal test-pieces.The object of the experiment was mainly to observe the effect of the crystal boundaries on both the deformation of the test piece and the process of recrystallisation and to compare the creep rate of the test-piece with that of a specimen consisting of one crystal only.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe specimen had an effective test length of 10 cms. and a cross $ection of 0·5 in. x 0·25 in. In Fig. 1 is given a sketch of the specimen to scale showing the positions of the crystal boundaries on all four surfaces. The objective in design of an excavation in a jointed rock mass is to achieve a prescribed degree of control of rock mass displacement around the excavation. Any excavation in jointed rock usually involves slip and separation along discontinuities as well as translation and ro- tation of constituent rock blocks. Thus, any acceptable model of behavior around an excava- tion must be capable of simulating the force displacement paths followed by the constituent elements, including rigid body translation and rotation. The distinct element method models such behavior by simulating the rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks which interact through corner and edge contacts. Discontinuities are regarded as boundary interactions between blocks with joint behavior prescribed for these inter- actions. Introduction of structural element logic allows a variety of installed support sys- tems to be modeled. The response of the support to axial, transverse, and flexural loads is based on explicit algorithms similar to those used in the distinct element formulation. This allows large displacements and rotations and general non-linear constitutive behavior for both the support elements and the interface with the rock. This paper describes both the distinct element and structural element formulations and demonstrates several applications involving sup- port interaction with jointed rock.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Developments in furnace construction and design have been very rapid in recent years. Larger furnaces operating at high top pressures with much improved burdens are giving extremely high production rates. Modern scientific techniques and the use of computer control are contributing to these Rates.

The techniques of geological control developed by the Coal Geology Sections of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Proprietary Limited in providing geological service in the coilieries operated by these associated companies cover the provision of geological control for both planning and production in each of which the significance of geology has in the past been only poorly appreciated by the coal mining industry.While the adoption of similar techniques is well within the capacity of major companies there is considerable scope for the development of government geological services providing specialized assistance of this nature for smaller scale producers.INTRODUCTIONThe coal mining industry in Australia can instance many notable mistakes caused by failure to obtain sufficient geological information or by incorrect interpretation of available geological evidence both before the commencement of mining and during the progress of operations. Substantial development undertaken in, areas with insufficient or inferior coal reserves, difficult mining conditions caused by failure to adjust operations to geological circumstances, and the irregular development of mine workings caused by unexpected geological features, all bear witness to the lack of geological foresight by the industry.Along with the more widespread general use of applied geology, an increasing acceptance has developed during the past ten years of the valuable contribution which can be made by this science to the exploitation of coalfields. In spite of the advances which have been made, there is still a wide scope for further detailed application of geology throughout the coal mining industry in Australia.
