A Kellogg type computer model of the slag fuming process is applied in reverse to derive some thermodynamic properties of components in lead blast furnace slag. At 1200¦C, the average activity coefficients calculated were 3.40 (S.D. 0.50) for ZnO referred to the pure solid; 0.657 (S.D. 0.022) for PbO referred to the pure liquid; for the ratios y 3.175 y (referred to the Feo.9450, Fe304 pure solids) 4.19 (S.D. 1.15), and for yCaS/ 1CaO (referred to the pure solids) 5.10 (S.D. 2.96). Statistical relationships were derived for these activity coefficients and ratios as functions of the composition of slag, which contained in molar percentages 1.9 - 12.6% ZnO, 19.8 - 24.9% Fe0.9450, 0.9 - 1.6% Fe304, 0.002 - 1.9% PbO, 16.1 - 18.6% CaO, 25.9 - 31.0% SiO2, 4.8 - 5.5% MnO, 9.2 - 10.3% A101.5, 1.2 - 1.4% CaS, and 5.1 - 9.6% "Mgo" (the balance).

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.

Over the last five years Mt Leyshon has matured into a sizeable gold mine by Australian Standards. In the later part of 1990, after commissioning of the 3.5 mtpa CIP Plant upgrade, experience indicated there was potentially additional Mill capacity beyond that being utilised at the 3.5 mtpa rate. Overall throughput was limited by crushing plant performance and high operating costs resulting from the age and condition of the main crushing plant.In addition, mining was being carried out using a mining contractor who utilised relatively small, high cost mining equipment, and on-going exploration success was also indicating that the then current mine plan would result in only a portion of the available resource being exploited.

The Ladolam deposit lies within the altered volcanic rocks of the caldera floor, part of which now forms Luise Harbour. It was discovered in 1982 in the course of a reconnaissance drainage sediment sampling programme. This was designed to follow up indications of surface hydrothermal activity noted by Government geologists during an earlier survey of the Tabar-Feni island chain. Diamond drilling began in September 1983 and by the end of 1989 a payable and proved mineable reserve containing 19 million ounces of gold had been established. Rock types and structures are masked at the surface by intense alteration and weathering. An extensive drilling programme has enabled the identification of these features and the relationships between them necessary for an understanding of the factors controlling gold mineralisation. It has also led to the recognition of two distinct phases of alteration. The first phase of porphyry-style potassic alteration was followed by violent caldera formation, producing extensive brecciation and veining. The second alteration phase partly over- printed the first phase and was an epithermal one, evidenced by argillic, advanced argillic and phyllic assemblages. During this event, a large volume of fluids circulated under the favourable structural conditions; these fluids included a sulphur- rich, neutral chloride brine believed to have transported the gold. Boiling and mixing of circulating fluids in the open breccias is thought to have resulted in deposition of the gold. There is evidence that this process is continuing at the present day.

The increase in the proportion of sulphide ore treated by the gold mining industry has led to generally higher oxygen requirements. Additions of pure oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and in some cases calcium peroxide, have been proposed as a means of satisfying the oxygen demand and overcoming the problems from reactive sulphides in the ore. Current oxidant addition options and practice are reviewed.Laboratory oxygen demand tests are reported for a suite of ores to show some of the effects of pH and preaeration.Laboratory leach tests at high and low dissolved oxygen levels are reported on two of the ores with higher oxygen demands, and the results are assessed in terms of gold leaching kinetics, ultimate gold extraction, and cyanide requirements.

The process of hydraulic transport through pipelines, worldwide well known for the transport of fine-grain solids is also being used to a greater extent in mining for the handling of primarily coarse-grain solid û water mixtures for the removal of, for instance û coal and waste mixtures after coal winning using hydraulic monitors, tailings for backfilling underground and washer tailings and flotation waste to the dump. A large-scale test unit was taken into service at the Bergbauforschung GmbH (Mining Research Company) in Essen-Kray, GFR, to further improve this technology. The unit was planned and built by Krupp Industrie- und Stahlbau of Duisburg in cooperation with Bergbauforschung GmbH. The paper deals in detail with the demands made on this test unit and the technical results obtained on it and with the planned experimental research work.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

The smelting, refining and hydrometallurgical operations practised in the winning of non-ferrous metals are associated with severe aqueous and high temperature corrosion problems.With the increasing costs of maintenenace and the utilization of computerization to control the processes, the trend in recent years has been to spend more capital on improved and proprietory grades of engineering materials, which offer greater reliability and more cost effective plant performance.The problems which have plagued stainless steel users for many years are the alloys' poor performance in chloride or other halide media where pitting, crevice or chloride induced stress corrosion cracking may occur, have been essentially solved by the new proprietory grades. The controlled additions of minor alloying elements including rare earth metals have led to the development of stainless steels with high mechanical strengths, improved corrosion resistance, and high temperature corrosion resistance and structural stability.

During 1997 two different types of coal mine inertisation equipment were trialed in separate underground coal mines in Queensland.In April 1997 tests of the Polish developed GAG-3A inert gas generator were carried out at the Collinsville No 2 Coal Mine. These demonstrations indicated that the GAG-3A device was applicable in underground coal mines and that with respect to inertisation rate the device outperformed all other currently available techniques. The unit was assembled rapidly and operated safely during surface and underground trials and no mechanical problems were encountered with the device. The GAG-3A is not suitable for every fire scenario particularly if large volumes of fresh air are being drawn into the mine(where multiple units may be required), but with respect to the selection criteria developed by the Moura Implementation Process Task Group 5 criteria, the unit performed up to the specifications required.

Depressed prices for minerals will force the mining industry to became more efficient. The continuous conveying of pit product is one area in which savings can be made. Conveyors are available, or can be adapted to provide the flexibility and reliability required. Each conveying system will need to be custom designed to suit the particular requirements of the mine. The Australian mining industry must take the initiative and accept the challenge of the new technology.

Expertise has been developed locally to a high level during the last decade which has contributed to the success of many recent mining projects. The services available'cover the whole spectrum from the evaluation of ore reserves, through feasibility study and financial evaluation to design, project management and commissioning. Using these services effectively and economically is an objective which client and consultant both must pursue but which is not always achieved. The El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit (26¦ 15Æ Lat S, ~2700 masl) and associated exotic mineralisation is situated at the back-scarp of the late middle Miocene Atacama pediplain in the western Precordillera. New, together with published 40Ar-39Ar data from El Salvador combined with morphologic analysis reveal that the palaeospring plumbing system related to exotic mineralisation at the Damiana exotic Cu deposit and the local geomorphology has not changed fundamentally between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Stable H/D isotope data on supergene alunite from El Salvador indicate an overall increase in dD values (VSMOW) from -74ë at 35.82 ¦ 0.95 Ma to -23ë at ~11 Ma. The transition from strongly to moderately negative deuterium values occurred between ~16 and ~13.5 Ma. Supergene alunite from the El Hueso (3950 masl) sedimentary rock-hosted epithermal deposit ca 35 km SE from El Salvador was dated at 8.19 ¦ 0.01 Ma and yielded a dD value of -25ë. We interpret the increasing deuterium excess as the result of strong evaporation and recycling of meteoric water after ~15 Ma and as indicative for a change in precipitation patterns and climate desiccation. In contrast, the strongly negative dD value for late Eocene supergene alunite points to a more humid climate and an elevation similar to the present. The late Miocene supergene activity at El Hueso is probably related to an uplift of the Precordillera to elevations sufficient for capture of orographically controlled precipitation. Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil. Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers. As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

Novel microbial isolates that readily oxidise iron and sulfur were recovered from samples collected from a spent chalcopyrite/pyrite test heap. Methods were developed to enrich and isolate microbes that thrive in low pH environments and utilise iron and/or sulfur as sources of energy. Screening of these isolates revealed diverse substrate utilization (sulfur, ferrous ion, chalcopyrite, pyrite, glucose) as well as growth at temperatures between 30 - 50¦C. When native isolates were employed, shake flask leaching tests of chalcopyrite concentrate resulted in higher copper yields in comparison to laboratory reference strains Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (DSM 583) and Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans (DSM 9293). After 700 hours several native isolates had leached between 20 - 30 per cent more copper than laboratory reference strains during experiments conducted at 45¦C. This research has established a unique culture collection of mining microbes that readily adapt to Australian conditions. Exploitation of these microbes may result in improved leaching kinetics and copper recovery from Australian chalcopyrite ores as demonstrated from shake flask leaching tests. Whilst this research provides a capability for Australian mineral sulfide ores, this technology can be easily adapted to suit ores of any origin resulting in more effective and efficient microbial leaching.

Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (B.O.S.) commenced in Australia in December, 1962. Two 200-ton furnaces were installed initially at Newcastle with a 50-ton furnace coupled to a continuous casting machine added in 1967. In 1965, two 100-ton furnaces were installed at Whyalla plant and two 225-ton furnaces are nearing com- pletion at Port Kembla to commence oper- ations in 1972. Plant layouts in each centre differ due to changing circumstance and increasing knowledge of the B.O.S. process since 1962. Raw materials are a most important factor for good operation of the process. Most materials come from within Australia but some are imported. General operating practices are similar in each plant, although treatment of fume at Port Kembla will be by the OG (Oxygen Converter Gas Recovery) Process as against electrostatic precipitators in Newcastle and Whyalla. Special alloy steels as well as plain carbon steels can be made by the B.O.S. process. Production potential of the process in Australia has yet to be fully utilised with 45 per cent of steel production coming from B.O.S. In 1971.

Slag cleaning is an important part of the pyrometallurgical operations at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. It is a complex system with many streams of different phases and composition. Some of these streams are very difficult to control and/or monitor. Through the use of a statistical computer package, called Minitab, key relationships affecting the economical operation of the slag cleaning process have been found. Data for the statistical analysis was collected from all possible variables around the appendage.

Most analysts determining tungsten trioxide in low grade samples are aware that colorimetric procedures do not possess the inherent disadvantages of gravimetric methods operating on milligram quantities of tungsten trioxide. Apart from the inaccuracies associated with weighing four or five milligrams of ignited oxide in a platinum crucible of about 30 gm. weight with a large surface area to absorb moisture, using a 5 gm. charge on samples less than about 0·15 per cent tungsten trioxide, it is extremely difficult toget complete or pure precipitation of tungsten with cinchonine, cinchonine plus alpha benzoin oxime, rhodamine B or any other of the commonly used precipitants. Table 2', No. 8, illustrates the low results obtained by gravimetric as opposed to colorimetric procedures. In addition the colorimetric determination requires only a small portion of the time consumed by gravimetric practices and the increased accuracy obtainable in low ranges together with the saving in time made it highly desirable to develop a colorimetric method suitable for King Island ores.The most commonly used colorimetric method is that introduced by Feigl and Krumholz (1932), since modified by various investigators (Grimaldi and North, 1943; Sandell, 1946; Westwood and Mayer, 1947; Gentry and Sherrington, 1948; Freund, Wright and Brookshier, 1951; Grouthamel and Johnson, 1954; and others). Economic gold mineralisation was discovered at Round Hill by Homestake NZ Limited in 1984 and was subsequently put into production by Macraes Mining Company Limited (MMCL) in 1990. The total mineral resource in 1990 was estimated at 41.4 Mt @ 1.42 glt at a 0.7g/t cut off, for 1.8 Moz of gold. Since project start up the mill has been upgraded twice to increase throughput and reached its current capacity of 3.2 Mtpa. At 31 December 1996, a total of 16.2 Mt of ore at average grade of 1.73 g/t has been excavated, yielding 655,000 oz of gold. MMCL began exploration along the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone in 1994. Since 1994, exploration has been successful with the discovery of over 3.5 Moz of gold. The resource now stands at 110 Mt @ 1.46 g/t gold for 5.1 Moz. This success has led to a planned expansion of the processing capacity to 9 Mtpa with the building of a new 6 Mtpa processing plant.
