Electromagnetic methods used in geo- physical prospecting for conductive ore bodies have proved successful in Canada,Sweden and other countries. In Australia however the depth of weathering generally exceeds 30 metres. This introduces a problem of highly conductive overburden and renders equipment useful elsewhere virtually ineffective. A discussion of several EM prospecting techniques is presented and a new system under development at James Cook University using V.L.F. transmissions capable of indicating changes in impedance (not only highly conducting media) is outlined.

Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. On the contrary, the rocks associated with the lode are more simply explained as highly metamorphosed sediments, in some cases modified by water introduced from surrounding rocks into zones of strong folding and faulting. The Ocean Drilling Program is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (Legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the 19 countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The Australian Secretariat of the ODP is housed at the Department of Earth Sciences at James Cook University, along with the AUSCAN Consortium office. The Canadian Secretariat is presently based at the University of Toronto. Both secretariats have major research interests in the ore deposits, both ancient and modem, and so there is currently a major drive by the AUSCAN ODP Consortium to make available data and technological information to the minerals industry. This type of information includes data from drilling hydrothermal sites such as the hydrothermally active TAG black smoker complex on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, drilled during Leg 158, and the Middle Valley sulphide deposit, on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, which was drilled during Leg 139.

The outbreak of open fires underground cause disturbances to the conditions of the mine ventilation process. Thermal and chemical effects due to fire create unsteady, transient states in airflow and the spread of combustion products in the mine ventilation network. Changes in airflow have an influence on the fire, constituting a sort of feed-back between the fire and the ventilation process. This paper deals with a numerical simulation method, which enables the determination of transients caused by fires. The mathematical model, of the simulation method considered, has been based upon a: simple model of combustion of fuel in the airway, unsteady exchange of heat between the fire, airflow and surrounding rocks, airflow in mine ventilation networks and the theory of heatflow in the rocks. Initial and boundary conditions allow the determination of a set of parameters describing the airflow, the propagation of combustion products, the tempera- ture of the fire and flow etc. due to the fire. The simulation method, facilitates a graphical presentation of the spread of combustion products throughout the network. The simulation method has been prepared for an IBM PC/AT Computer.

The invitation to speak today was in the form of a single sentence instruction: How does your company run and how do you communicate from top to bottom? It looks like I'll have to let you into our little secret. The team at Croesus know what works for us but we've never talked about it with others - least of all presented it at a conference such as this. In fact we tend to avoid the jargon normally associated with Best Practice or TQM, however in our own way, each of our staff are 100 per cent loyal to our company's aim to maintain and strengthen our commercial success. Just how we achieve this at Croesus is the subject of this presentation today, but first a little history. My dear old grandfather arrived in Kalgoorlie, as a mining engineer 100 years ago. Do you think he would have chuckled if someone suggested to him that a hundred years later we would just be starting to understand Kalgoorlie's geological mysteries? Well, here we are 100 years later and Croesus Mining is fortunate to be part of a generation now realising the true potential of Kalgoorlie's Goldfields. This provides us with a very fertile field in which to sow the seeds we can obtain from the World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing. With each new mineral deposit being discovered, old theories are being exploded. Each new deposit has a personality of its own, leading to some belated pioneering theories of where to drill next, and how to reduce internal costs so that we can win the war against constantly increasing external costs. What we have now and what the old timers didn't have is a huge database of geological input spanning several gold booms and a couple of nickel booms. My only interest in history is to pick up the points that may help us for our future. This is what we are doing in our company which is something of a David, in the David to Goliath range of mining companies in Australia. As a humbling thought; of the 115 164 tonnes of gold that the world's mines have produced throughout history, four tonnes have been produced by Croesus Mining. That's equivalent to 0.003 per cent of the total world's gold production. In the past financial year we achieved a dividend yield of five per cent. To put this into perspective, that's over twice the dividend yield of BHP, Australia's largest company. As we are somewhat less known than BHP, let me spend a few moments giving some particulars of our company's background.

The importance of timbering, not only from a financial point of view but from an actual mining point of view, is so often overlooked or slightly glossed over by the average expert and investor, that I have thought it would prove interesting to go into the matter and to invite discussion upon the subject. We will first take small veins, or reefs as they are termed in some mining countries; and by small veins it is intended to denote fissures from a few inches to three feet. The ore body is supposed to be confined within well defined walls free from gangue matter, unless the casing can be defined as such. Now, if the walls are smooth and moderately hard, no timbering is required other than the stulls, which are braced from wall to wall in order to form platforms or stages to stope from. Should the reef from wall to wall prove payable, or should the vein be of a character to prohibit cleaning or sorting; and it be determined to send the whole of the stone to the, reduction works, the stuUs should be left in place until the section or block of ground is worked out, in order that if a weak spot in the walls (especially the hanging) occur, it would be possible, without any particularly extra expense or difficulty often times accompanied by danger to brace and secure the slabs. After the block became entirely stoped, it would pay where labour was cheap to remove the majority of timbers to stull another section.

The paper describes a new process for filtration which combines the continuous operation of conventional vacuum filters with the low final moisture contents hitherto only achievable with plate and frame presses. The increasingly high portion of fine particles causes several problems in the filtration of copper concentrates. One drawback is that remarkable quantities of liquid are attached to the very fine particles because of their specific surface area. Furthermore, fine particles also reduce the size of the capillaries in the filter cake, thus increasing the critical pressure which any filtration system has to exceed to achieve the desired final cake moisture. The maximum filtration pressure of conventional vacuum filters is limited by nature itself and by practical aspects to approximately 0.75 bar. The hyperbaric filter combines the continuous operating principle with an increase in filtration pressure of up to 6 bar simply by placing the entire disc or drum filter inside a pressure vessel. The major machine components and process features are explained in the details of the paper. After extensive research and field testing, 23 ANDRITZ hyperbaric filters, with a total filtration area of 1968 m2 have now been sold. Seventeen of these units (1440 m2) are in commercial use and more units are, on order. Performance data on copper concentrates from plants in Australia, South America, Poland, Africa and North America are outlined in detail. The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator. Perseverance nickel deposit is located at latitude 27¦ 491S, longitude 1200 42'E, 330 km north of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Gossanous outcrops were discovered in April, 1971, and after further detailed surface investigations, percussion drilling led to diamond drilling by June, 1971. Up to December, 1972, 127 diamond holes totalling 45,590 m were drilled to indicate 33 million tonnes averaging 2.2% Ni using a 1% cut-off grade. The deposit occurs in a lenticular ultra- mafic unit emplaced in metasediments locally forming the eastern flank of the Archaean green- stone belt trending NNW from Leonora to Wiluna. To the east a major strike fault separates the metasediments from gneiss; westwards there is a sequence of metavolcanics with further ultra- mafic units. Length of the lens is 3500 m and it attains a maximum width of 800 In. The eastern contact is moderately regular, but the western contact is prominently embayed. Local strikes are NNW, and dips are steeply W. A set of strike faults cuts the ultramafics and enveloping quartzites. These are normal faults, parallel to the major eastern fault, dipping 65-70¦W. The development of low displacement, moderate to high-angle reverse faults during the formation of the Argo gold deposit within a tholeiitic gabbro host-rock involved a four stage evolution of deformation and associated hydrothermal alteration. Fault zone evolution and Au mineralisation were associated with high fluid flux, fault-valve behaviour in a severely misoriented fault zone. The far-field maximum principal stress was approximately east-west and horizontal, and the far-field minimum principal stress was subvertical. The fault system developed at approximately 400¦C in a transitional brittle-ductile regime. Initial Stage 1 deformation involved ductile shear and the development of potassic (biotite-rich) alteration assemblages and associated reaction-weakening in shear zones; minor quartz extension veins were formed. Stage 2 is marked by the onset of predominantly brittle shear failure, the widespread development ofmatrix-supported breccias in fault zones and a change to sodic (albite-carbonate-quartz) alteration styles. Extension veins have limited development. Stage 3 is also dominated by brittle shear failure and characterised by a change to quartz-carbonate assemblages in fault-fill veins and breccias. However, large arrays of extension veins are also well-developed adjacent to faults. In Stage 4, widespread subhorizontal quartz-carbonate-biotite extension veins were developed, but shear failure was limited. This is an ABSTRACT only. On the basis of investigations carried out, the author offered new technology, which allows utilising all titanium-contained waste with receiving of finished products: catalysts for utilisation of hydrogen sulfide gases, accompanying oil-extraction. This technology is presented in the paper. It is economically effective and ecologically clean.

Traditional methods for monitoring, and hence controlling, pyrometallurgical processes rely heavily upon the skill and experience of operators. A skilled operator will usually achieve consistent, though often conservative, results, whilst an un-skilled operator will require considerable time and training to achieve the same results. Semtech Metallurgy AB have demonstrated that continuous and precise control of pyrometallurgical processes can be achieved through on-line analysis of pyrometallurgical flame off-gas using optical spectroscopy. The feasibility of the technology has been demonstrated on a large number of full-scale tests at production plants and by several commercial installations. Evidence suggests that installation of this technology, called Semtech Optical Production Control (OPC), has resulted in considerable economic benefits to the plant efficiency and asset life. These economic benefits are believed to be a direct result of improved objective on-line control. Technically the following benefits have been demonstrated: improved metal grade control, reduced metal losses, reduced processing time, and improved personnel safety. SemtechÆs OPC is a non-intrusive technology which relies on the fact that the composition of the vapour phase above a high temperature melt is closely related to the instantaneous status of the melt. This enables on-line real-time analysis of the furnace melt to accurately determine melt status and in particular reaction endpoints. Originally developed for on-line monitoring of copper converting in a Pierce-Smith vessel the field of applications for the technology is steadily growing. This paper introduces the Semtech OPC technology; discusses various applications and outlines the demonstrated benefits.

Narrow reef gold deposits are generally less than 4 m in width and relatively complex geological phenomena. They often display variable geometry, attitude, continuity and internal architecture. Economic grades are mostly restricted to specific structural domain(s) and localised within discrete ore shoots that have a nuggety internal grade distribution. On account of the often extended history of geological events, the specific factors localising gold-rich domains are likely to be unique to a particular mine or even reef. These features lead to a high resource risk and require careful management during both evaluation and mining. The gross form, location and global continuity of gold reefs can generally be determined from surface diamond drilling leading to the definition of Inferred Mineral Resources. It is likely that for the definition of Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources underground development and/or close- spaced diamond drilling will be required. Understanding geometry and continuity permits the resource to be more effectively managed, lowering risk/uncertainty. This in turn will allow for well-informed financial and operational decisions. Most importantly, project expectations and milestones can be set at achievable levels.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. Cupellation Process.-Lead button is re-oxidised to litharge leaving a gold and silver bead.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs copper/gold operation disposes of approximately 222 000 dry metric tonnes of tailings per day via two thickeners. Reduction of the flocculant dosage rates in each of the tailing thickeners has been achieved with the installation of Clarometers«, modifications to the existing operating DCS control strategy and a change in plant flocculant. This has reduced the flocculant consumption rate in the last twelve months by approximately 20 per cent. It has also highlighted the disparity in the settling rates of the two thickeners. Collaborative efforts between Cytec technical site engineers and Freeport operational personnel have made possible the overall gains achieved in the tailings thickener optimisation.

PT Allied Indo Coal is therefore a contractor to the Indonesian Government and pays a 20 per cent royalty of all coal mined.
