The evolution of Hall process alumina reduction technology is des- cribed with particular attention to the pot lines. Future directions of tech- nological change are considered. It is predicted that the Hall process will continue to be the avenue for aluminium production for some time to come.

The mining industry is a relatively minor user of water, which has historically been largely soured from private schemes. Frequently mines are often located in areas with limited available water resources. Water reform is increasingly affecting access to water for new mining projects and mining companies are being required to consider the value of water and the implications of reliability in their planning. This paper seeks to briefly review the water reform process in Australia and how it is affecting the mining industry with reference to some recent project experience.

Following plant trials in 1972 Mount Lyell installed an AMDEL On Stream Analysis system for measuring copper and density on the flot- ation feed and final plant tailing streams, in August 1973. As a result of poor performance of the final tailing system these probes were changed over to the rougher tailing stream, back to the final tailing stream and finally to the final copper concentrate stream where the system is currently performing satisfact- orily. The history of the development of the system to its current operational status is Described.

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

Mount Isa mine has a long history of successful exploration since discovery 70 years ago. Remaining reserves, although substantial, exist in a scheduling framework which involves long-term production from new ore sources with attendant technical risk and major capital investment. Current exploration aims to incrementally increase reserve tonnage to maintain existing production levels as well as to provide a buffer for potential start-up delays from new ore sources. Exploration also aims to increase the net present value of the operation by discovering new major orebodies around the Mount Isa and Hilton mines.

Leichhardt Colliery is developed for underground mining of coal seams at depths exceeding 280 m. Investigations of the area were conducted in phases, each designed to delineate seam characteristics more accurately and to indicate with increasing precision the nature of local geological features and the ranges of those coal properties susceptible to variation. The investigational campaign is described phase by phase summarizing evaluation of the area at the conclusion of each phase. Predictions of geological conditions likely to influence engineering planning are contrasted with actual conditions observed during trial mining.

Geometallurgical modelling is now a hot topic in deposit evaluation and in optimising mine performance; however, its history is long and varied. Historically metallurgical sampling has frequently suffered from a lack of data due to the cost of producing representative bulk samples. In the early 1990s geometallurgical modelling similarly suffered from a lack of data due to complex, time consuming and expensive sampling techniques. More recently, simple and relatively cheap tests for geometallurgical variables such as hardness, grindability, throughput, SAG power index, bond work index, crushing index, mineral recovery and concentrate grade have become widespread. The cheaper sampling has resulted in relatively large geometallurgical databases. However, most of the geometallurgical variables sampled are implicitly (and incorrectly) assumed to be additive when modelled by traditional geostatistical techniques, often leading to ill-informed and costly decisions. Geometallurgical variables are mostly non-additive so the current geostatistical challenge is to develop new approaches to dealing with this type of data. This paper briefly describes a historical case study of geometallurgical modelling of the George Fisher Pb-Zn mine completed in the mid 1990s, then outlines some of the current misconceptions of geometallurgical data and modelling techniques regularly applied to it, and finally discusses some recent developments in geometallurgical modelling, with examples from a number of current clients indicating the direction forward.

THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. A study of the passive treatment system for Hilton minewater revealed that it consists of four main process steps. The water, which contains soluble and particulate iron and zinc and is supersaturated with CO , is pumped to the surface and then passes throuqh a degassinq unit into settling ponds where larger particles of iron hydroxide, containing some adsorbed zinc, can settle out. The still turbid supernatant is pumped to the top of a hill, from where it is allowed to trickle in a broad sheet, releasing CO , towards an earthen channel in the valley below. Consequently the pArises from around 6 to 7.5. This in turn promotes further decrease in the concentration of soluble zinc by increased adsorption of zinc on to iron hydroxide particles. The channel then transports the water to the third process in the system - a 53 ML pond acting primarily as a flocculation-sedimentation basin. The clarified water overflows into a second channel, downstream of the pond, which constitutes the fourth process in the system. Here, copious quantities of filamentous algae further reduce zinc concentrations to acceptable levels before the water is collected for recycle into mine operations. The work reported here represents a detailed study of this system and describes the optimisation of the operation of each of the individual steps involved.

East Guangdong tin province overlaps the southmost part of the mesozoic magmatic arcof continental margin type in Southeast China and is dominated by mesozoic syntectic magmatism,which associated to tin mineralization. It is distinguished from Nanling tin province but quite close to NW Bolivian tin province in both tectonic and magmatic relations.Tin deposit's mostly of cassiterite-sulfide, cassiterite-silicate formations are localized along exsocontact zone of granitoid batholith or stock, boundary area of volcanic depression, or, within volcanic edifice. Petrochemistry studies show tin was concentrated as intermediate-acidic magma evolved by fractional crystallization. Xiling tin deposit of vein type related to extrusive... the lava dome was formed at T C 221-301 and at very shellow depth,seems to correspond to type A in classification for Bolivia tin deposits by J.N.Grant. Tashan tin deposit of dissemination type related to hypergene intrusive facies,with mineralization occured in endocontact zone of granite porphyry dykes is considered as porphyry type,which spported by H-0 isotope and gas-liquid inclusion evidences. It formed at T C 250-430, comparable to Bolivia porphyry tin deposits,but at a greater depth 1.3 3.0km.A model for known tin deposits in East Guangdong was worked out. A good prospecting perspective was revealed for the potential type of tin deposit in East Guangdong--subvolcanic porphyry tin deposit.

The Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has had occasion from time to time to examine rocks, ores and concentrates from the Yatukoula goldfield, Fiji. The results of the examinations have been supplied as Mineragraphic Reports and have been supplementary to various investigations carried out by the mining companies on ore treatment, or by visiting geologists on the nature of the rocks and lodes. The presence of tellurides was determined in 1935, though incorrectly as nagyagite. The general absence of lead, except in traces, was soon afterwards discovered, and it came to be recognised as the mines were opened up that the chief telluride minerals on the field were sylvanite and native tellurium. Specimens of the tellurides have been provided from time to time by E. G. Theodore, Managing Director of the Emperor Mines Ltd., and of the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines N.L., and further material was recently obtained, as the result of a visit to the field at the invitation of Mr. Theodore.The aim of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the tellurides in these specimens. The discovery of minerals in any community, especially precious minerals, gives a sense of hope and optimism about development prospects within the community. However, the euphoria surrounding such a find could be short lived if the wrong perception is created at the inception of the project, that the exploitation of the mineral resource will pose a serious problem to the community. The socio-economic impact can be negative or positive but if not properly handled, the negatives will outweigh the positives. Illegal mining activity, popularly known as Galamsey in Ghana, is a typical example of the negative impact of the mineral industry. Galamsey activities have resulted in an increase in school drop-out rate, pollution of water bodies affecting entire communities bringing a lot of health problems, destruction of farm lands, destruction of rail lines resulting in transportation problems, armed robbery, prostitution, just to mention a few. The improvement of the water supply system in the surrounding communities, implementation of sustainable development programs, improvement in the infrastructure, are just a few examples of positive socio-economic impact.Factors responsible for the socio-economic and environmental impact include: the unwillingness of most companies to invest substantial resources to deal with environmental issues, lack of adequate professionals with the requisite appreciation for environmental issues related to their activities, realisation that support of surrounding communities is key to successful operations, the now globally accepted view that multinational companies should invest in the socio-economic lives of the surrounding communities, etc. In order to ensure the prevention of the negative impact of mining activities on local communities, there should be a paradigm shift in the way the training for the new crop of mining and metallurgical engineers have been structured in the past, social contract with the local communities must be drawn and implemented; it must not be an imposition on the communities but rather a contract arising out of extensive interactions between the industries and the local communities. Environmental awareness has reached a level where communities affected by the minerals industry, to a very large extent, know what they should tolerate and what they should not. There is therefore the need to ensure that effective systems are in place to exploit mineral resources without damaging the environment.

Geometallurgy is an emerging, cross-disciplinary field that integrates spatial models of rock properties with time-based outcomes of mining and treatment processes. Geometallurgical variables include any rock property that has a positive or negative effect on the business. Some of the more critical geometallurgical variables include recovery, grindability, throughput, power consumption, mineralogy and content of deleterious materials. These variables drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way and thus geometallurgy has potential to positively impact on the value of strategic and tactical decisions across many mining organisations. Geometallurgical models, like traditional grade-only models are based on samples collected from the mineralised and non-mineralised regions of the deposit. The nature of some non-grade variables, particularly those that are dependent on the ore treatment processes, requires special consideration during sampling and subsequent spatial modelling. Failing to objectively consider the characteristics of variables may seriously compromise the validity of the sample selection, sample treatment, data models and the subsequent decisions. In addition to addressing the vexed question of collecting an æunbiased and representativeÆ sample, the sampling and modelling approach must consider issues of scale, both geostatistical support and also the relationship between bench-scale data and operational-scale mineral processing performance. This paper proposes a framework (the Primary-Response framework) for the classification of geometallurgical variables. This framework is designed to assist with developing sampling approaches and identifying the most appropriate spatial modelling approach. The proposed framework can also help identify the risks associated with designing, sampling and modelling of both types of geometallurgical variables. The Primary-Response framework divides variables into two categories; primary variables and response variables. How a variable is classified in this framework depends on the degree to which the variable reflects either an intrinsic attribute of the rock (æprimaryÆ) or its response to measurement processes (æresponseÆ). Depending on the classification in this framework, appropriate sampling and modelling decisions can be made to minimise the risk associated with the incorrect treatment of the variable. In particular, the authors argue that for response variables, the approach taken to building spatial models may need to be different to conventional linear averaging approaches (for example kriging).

Sydney is the capital city of NSW and has a population of approximately four million people. Eighty per cent of the cityÆs water is supplied by Warragamba Dam, which is situated some 75 kilometres south west of the city centre. A risk assessment was carried out on the dam and future predictions of water flows into the catchment area showed that there was a risk of a one in 700-year flood not being contained by the dam. The predicted loss of life and property damage warranted the construction of an auxiliary spillway on the eastern side of the existing dam to cater for any uncontrollable influx of water. A test blasting program was instigated and the blasting parameters were established that would lead to routine production blasting of the sandstone rock making it more cost effective to excavate. Blast induced vibrations were a concern to the owners and the dam wall and ancillary infrastructure was instrumented with sensitive vibration monitoring equipment during the test blasting phase of the operation. Once the blasting parameters were established from the testing program production blasting was carried out on a daily basis to maintain æstockpileÆ of fragmented ground for the excavation equipment. Blast vibration models were developed to predict vibration levels for more sensitive areas of the dam to give the operators more confidence in their operations. The blast induced vibration levels recorded did not cause any structural damage to the dam wall and the waveform frequencies of the blasting operation were much higher than that experienced during a recent earthquake. The integrity of the SCAÆs assets were at no time jeopardised.

The Mine Safety and Inspection Act, 1994 of Western Australia recognises the importance of ground control in underground mining. The recent safety performance of underground mining is summarised in terms of the most common causes of injury and fatal accidents. A review of current ground control practices is presented and the concepts of local and large-scale ground control are introduced. The need for a more systematic approach to ground control is considered to be directly related to requirement to improve safety performance. The new regulations will require that certain geotechnical issues be addressed during the life of a mine. To comply with the regulations it is suggested that a ground control management plan be developed for each mine. The geotechnical issues associated with the ground control management plan are reviewed and hazard recognition aspects discussed.

The development of paraprofessional courses in metallurgy and related disciplines, by the Department of Technical and Further Education in New South Wales, is outlined in this paper. The changing nature of metall- urgical educational requirements is summarised, and various attendance patterns discussed. The potential advantages of the sandwich system of College attendance, to the more distant sectors of the mineral processing and metallurgical industry is outlined. Some of the likely future trends in technician education are presented. These include the need to respond to the changing expectations of technician employers, as shown by industrial surveys, the role of experiential learning, the need to integrate courses so that students can build on prev- iously completed courses, the possibility that future technicians will require a multi- disciplinary background and the provision of easier access to technical college facilities by potential students and industries.

The problems associated with achieving adequate accuracy for on-site axial flow fan performance measurements are discussed. The ability to test accurately rests heavily on equipment and installation design detail.Aerodynamic performance trials frequently cannot be carried out due mainly to the poor standard of installation design. In a majority of cases this results in unsteady, non-uniform inlet flow conditions to the fan. Details of installation design features and instrumentation, necessary for successful testing, are given for different types of installations and methods of testing. These cover both conventional practice, and new innovations which can provide solutions to difficult problems. Quantitative aspects of flow measurement are considered for various fan and duct configurations.Although the main emphasis is on large primary mine ventilation units which require on-site testing, the principles outlined have wide application to many other types of fan installation.
