The development of regional resource synergies in intensive areas with concentrations of minerals processing industries provides a significant avenue towards sustainable resource processing. Gladstone (Queensland) and Kwinana (Western Australia) are two of AustraliaÆs major heavy industrial areas. There are a number of successful regional synergies in both areas. In addition to the existing regional synergies in both areas, more potential synergy opportunities appear to exist which, upon implementation, could benefit industry, the environment and the community. To further enhance the development of such potential regional synergies, the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (http://www.csrp.com.au) commissioned research projects to facilitate the identification of potential synergies and assist with their implementation in both regions. This paper presents a selection of specific examples from both regions to illustrate the sustainability benefits from regional synergy developments. Although the composition of industries in the Gladstone and Kwinana regions is different both in terms of geography and industry diversity, similarities in synergy developments for both regions are apparent. Consequently, the examples discussed in this paper are organised around the key themes of water, energy and inorganic by-products. Comparison on a theme basis highlights success factors of successful synergies and demonstrates the range of benefits resulting from their implementation.

Vatukoula is a gold mining township situated at the south-west periphery of a Tertiary caldera which measures 3 miles by 4 miles. Erosion of the caldera resulted in the formation of a topographic depression, called the Tavua basin, covering about 30 square miles. This area, also known as the Tavua Goldfield, has been the site for spasmodic prospecting since the initial discovery of gold in 1932.The mineralization at Vatukoula is typically epithermal with the gold occurring as tellurides, auriferous sulphides, and to a much less extent as native gold. The lodes are confined to three major structures i.e. north-west shears, flatly dipping structures (flat makes), and local shatter orebodies.Within these structures, at least five types of controls are recognized to account for the localization of the oreshoots. The dominant control is structure.The lode structures are related to the overall structural pattern of the Tavua basin. This pattern, which is controlled by the collapse planes of the caldera and a north-west shear system, produced a "shatter block" atVatukoula and elsewhere around the caldera.Structural analysis indicates there are certain areas in the Tavua basin where exploration could be rewarded by the discovery of orebodies with similar controls to those of the productive Vatukoula block.

The CSA Mine has a long and varied history from initial discovery in 1871 through to the present. Lead-zinc mineralisation was mined historically near the surface. Today copper and silver are extracted from the deeper regions of the mine. The mine has passed through a number of owners over this time, each with a unique operating philosophy and understanding of the mineralisation. Cobar Management Pty Ltd re-opened the mine in 1999 and has undertaken extensive drilling programs to expand the resource and gain a better understanding of the mineralisation characteristics. Presently mineralisation has been located over a strike length of 1.2 km and to a depth of over 2.0 km with over 30 mineralised lenses from four identified ore systems. The refinement of geological and mineralisation models led to further discoveries and prompted a review and modification of resource modelling processes. Advanced statistical analyses prompted the implementation of ordinary kriging as a grade estimator. Improved stationarity from enhanced geological domaining has been supported by variography and kriging neighbourhood analysis studies. Resource models at CSA are now quantifiable in terms of mineralisation style and estimation reliability. The new techniques are assisting the definition of more mining fronts, which are creating new opportunities to increase mine output.

Improvements in mining by the application of electronics necessitates analy-sis of the objectives and problems. A detailed analysis has shown that increased tunel-ling performance is one of the most important objectives. In mining, the environmental conditions for machines, their handling and servicing are very hard. Therefore a health monitoring system for tunnelling machines in hazardous areas has been developed. This system measures operational parameters, such as-flow, pressure, temperature, etc., de-rives forecasts of possible failures from these values, and assists maintenance person-nel. Important data are transmitted to a surface computer via telephone cables. Health monitoring is based on the cognition that slow deterioration of characteristic parame-ters, e.g. fluid loss, are symptoms of wear. Sudden changes of machine parameters indi-cate sudden destruction. Computer technology is very advanced, but transducer technolo-gy has not,been able to keep pace. Filling the yawning gap in the mining industry is a challenge to technology and requires special techniques. Machine monitoring and automa-tion in underground mining is still in its infancy. A lqt of development and research work is still necessary. The risks are great-The expected benefit due to increased min-ing performance (up to 5 %) justifies the risks in development.

This contribution presents the first results of an experimental research aimed at finding an unified description of the first stages of a rock comminution process. With reference to the case of the jaw crushers and to the specific subject of the comminution law, the tests reviewed and analysed in this contribution have been carried out, at a laboratory scale, on five different materials (limestones, quartzite, serpentinite) at different reduction ratios and feed rates, and accurately recording both total power and idle running power. The analysis of the results has shown that: ò the grain size distribution of the products complies with a modified form of the Rosin-Rammler equation, already found to be well suited to representing the grain size distribution of blasted rock in previous works by the authors; ò observed trends of the consumed power at increasing reduction ratios is steeper than predicted by the classical Rittinger, Kick and Bond laws, Rittinger law representing however a closer approximation of the experimental results; and ò a more accurate description of the experimental results is provided by a modified form of the Rittinger law. Accuracy of the semi-empirical expression has been found to be usually better than ten per cent by comparing actual results with expected Results.

At the operation of mine winders in deep shafts considerable oscillations of winding ropes may occur due to elasticity of both wind-ing and balance ropes. The amplitudes of longitudinal oscillations may reach + lm at relatively low frequencies, ranging from 0.5 to 2 c/s. These oscillations may be dangereus for the rope and produce several hazards to the winding installation as a whole. They may cause conside-rable instant accelerations on the pulley and dangerous tensions in ro-pe wires. The excessive acceleration may cause the uncontrolled rope slip on the pulley. Several methods of limitation of these accelera-tions were developed, some of them have been already in control system: of electric drive of the winder. The most simple ones are: a/ limita-tion of the rate of change of acceleration and retardation of the win-der /so called "jerk"/ and b/ the proper selection of regulators of the winder control system to get the optimal control. The trouble in solv-ing the problem of rope oscillations is that the dynamic system of the winder is a nonstationaryone owing to changing distance of conveyance from the pulley. Besides, the system is described by the equations with distributed parameters. The brief discussion of the theory and its practical aspects are enclosed as well.

Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. I know the theme of the Congress is "The 21st Century - Mining for Mankind" but I hope you will understand why my address touches upon some near-term issues as well. With the world oil market the way it is at present, "the long term" seems to be next week and no one is even sure what will happen tomorrow! So I am going to take a little licence with the theme of the Congress and talk about some fundamental issues that have much to do with the current uncertainties. The ways in which these issues are resolved and the role governments elect to play in the next few years will determine both the shape of the petroleum industry in the 1990s and beyond and the success with which we can confront a growing and inevitable future dependence on OPEC oil resources. But just in case you are not familiar with what has been happening in the petroleum industry recently and why the future seems more uncertain than ever, let me show you the gyrations in oil prices over the past 13 years, and remember that it is only another 13 years or so years to the 21st Century.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

The C.S.A. copper lead zinc mine, located seven miles north of Cobar in Central Western New South Wales, is the largest known mineral occurrence in the Cobar Mining Field. Hosted by the steeply west dipping, west facing sediments of the Cobar Group, the generally discordant orebodies occur within a strike width of 600 ft and an overall strike length of 1200 ft. They comprise lenticular steeply north pitching and east dipping zones of sulphide mineralisation which range in composition from massive pyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotite--galena to less massive pyrite- pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite varieties. The thinly bedded siltstones, shales and graywackes hosting the mineralisation appear to have derived many of their constituents from volcanic sourcesä They have been metamorphosed to the greenschist facies of regional metamorphism. At least two stages of deformation and folding have occurred. The first stage folded the rocks on a south pitching fold axis into their present configuration, and super- imposed a strong axial plane cleavage which subsequently guided the emplacement of the mineralisation. The second stage of deformation is considered to have controlled the zonal distrib- ution of the orebodies and the appropriate fold axis appears to coincide with the long axis of the orebodies.

Remnants of Plio-Pleistocene hot spring systems in Northland, New Zealand contain sulfide minerals, principally pyrite, marcasite and cinnabar. The climate is warm temperate to subtropical, with up to 3 m of rainfall per annum, and rocks are deeply weathered. Decomposition of the iron sulfides in natural outcrops and human excavations results in acid rock drainage with pH typically between 2 and 5, and locally down to pH 1. Deeply weathered basement greywacke is clay-rich and has negligible neutralisation capacity. Some overlying volcanic flows have resisted weathering, and pH is kept near neutral by relict secondary calcite in small areas. Natural rainforest soils commonly have pH between 4 and 5 over mineralised and unmineralised greywacke. Mineralised zones are enriched in arsenic, which occurs in solid solution (up to 1 wt per cent) in sulfides and phosphate minerals. Mercury also occurs in solid solution in some of these minerals, as well as in cinnabar. Base metals are present in low (background) concentrations only. Decomposition of the iron sulfides and phosphates releases the solid solution arsenic and mercury into the acid rock drainage solutions. Arsenic is readily adsorbed on to iron oxyhydroxides formed in acid rock drainage situations, and can be effectively removed from the biosphere. However, this arsenic is released back into the environment if the pH rises, as adsorbed oxyanions become less strongly bound and are displaced by hydroxyl ions. Behaviour of dissolved mercury is similar to that of arsenic but less well understood in these settings. Both arsenic and mercury are readily leached into pH 6 solutions from solid material collected from acid rock drainage sites. These observations suggest that neutralisation of acid rock drainage sites is undesirable in this setting, as arsenic and mercury will become more mobile in the environment. The naturally low pH of 4 to 5 of the forest floor, or even lower pH of natural acid rock drainage, is a preferable management option.

The presence of clays in channel iron deposits (CID) within the Pilbara region of Western Australia causes problems in the classification and subsequent processing of the iron ore. In particular, the presence of clay adversely affects the processing and ore metallurgical properties by increasing the amount of Si and Al. Iron ore companies are seeking new methods to quickly and objectively detect the type and amount of clay in these deposits. Traditional methods of clay quantification such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis are time consuming and expensive. Reliance on bulk chemical techniques (eg X-ray fluorescence, (XRF)) to derive normative mineral abundances can give misleading results. For example, the replacement of Fe by Al in the structure of the iron oxide minerals, goethite and haematite, which dominate in CIDs, can be significant. Silicon can also occur in association with these Fe minerals. If not accounted for, chemical techniques may overestimate the normative abundance of clays. In comparison, reflectance spectroscopy in the visible-to-near infrared (VNIR) and short wave infrared (SWIR) wavelength range (eg 400 - 2500 nm) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) (6000 - 900 cm-1) analysis are non-destructive techniques that can provide rapid and objective mineralogical information. Both techniques are particularly suited to Al-, Fe- and Mg-OH bearing minerals such as clays. Kaolinite and, to a lesser extent, montmorillonite are the most common clay contaminants that occur in the Pilbara CIDs. Previous applications of VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy have demonstrated the potential of these methods in quantifying the clay mineralogy of CID ore. In this study, variations in the depth of diagnostic spectral adsorption features in the SWIR wavelength range of kaolinite and montmorillonite in standardised mixtures, with known proportions of clay, were well correlated to the abundance of kaolinite and montmorillonite, and to the clay alumina content (ie per cent Al2O3 û clay).

The pitfalls, pleasures and management issues associated with international and remote projects are diverse.However, no problem is insurmountable and if an engineering team chooses (by luck or good planning) to push through the difficulties, success can mean an extremely satisfying experience for individuals and a significant, positive result for an organisation.International projects are not for the faint hearted or inflexible. Working in foreign lands with people who may or may not speak English and who may not initially respect you can become mentally and physically tiring.Sometimes the challenges are not fully explained to individuals in advance. Individuals then often learn about the challenges ù and discover solutions ù on the job. While this initially puts great pressure on individuals, matters improve eventually, especially when the locals come to understand that you are on site to make a positive difference.This paper will discuss aspects of a recent international project including meeting international clientsÆ expectations, dealing with cultural differences, social reckoning, environmental issues, and personal challenges. Specifically, it will cover aspects of working within a Russian cultural setting and overcoming social barriers.The paper also presents coping strategies for long periods of time spent away from home in remote places with extremes in weather beyond the normal experience of most Australians. For example, dealing with the effects of the spring thaw and coping with temperature ranges of -45 to +45¦C.Lastly, and possibly most importantly, there will be a focus on the role of translators. They have the power to make an engineer everyoneÆs best friend or, on your behalf, to order cold chicken liver and heart salad for lunch. ON milling plants, where a large number of slime samples are collected each day, considerable work is involved preparing them for the assayer. The usual practice (as the material usually passes a 150-mesh screen) is to place the sample on a 30-mesh screen an 1 brush it through on to a cloth below. The sample on the cloth is mixed and a portion taken out for the assayer. A simple apparatus that would rapidly disintegrate and prepare these slime samples for the assayer was needed. The manufacturers of assayers' supplies appear to have overlooked apparatus for this class of work. To overcome the tedious preparation of slime samples by the above method, the writer devised the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawing (Fig. 1). It will be seen that the apparatus is a combination of a modified household flour sifter and a riffle sampler.The apparatus is made up in two parts, the top half consisting of a screen box carrying the disintegrator, and the bottom half a, riffle divider, the joints between the two being a slip-in fit. A lid is provided for the screen box. The disintegrator consists of an open drum, to which are soldered three rows of spring steel fingers. Each row has a number of steel fingers which, on rotation, press against the semi-circular screen in the screen box, forcing the slime particles through.To operate the apparatus an 8-in. sample tin is placed under each spout of the divider. The sample of slime, which is about 2 lb. in weight and usually in lumps, is placed in the screen box, the cover replaced, and the drum rotated about half-a-dozen times by means of the handle.The disintegrated sample is divided by the rifle divider into two portions, which are found in the tins under the spouts of the apparatus. One of these samples is taken, mixed on a sheet, and sent to the assayer.

Wetherstones gold deposit is located just east of the township of Lawrence, in the Otago District of the South Island, New Zealand. The paper will describe aspects of the mining and exploration history of the Wetherstones gold field, current knowledge of the geology of the deposit, and speculate on possible outcomes of exploration in the modern era.   As at the famed Gabriels Gully situated nearby, most of the Wetherstones gold is/was contained in, or recycled into modern drainages from, the Blue Spur Conglomerate (æBSCÆ). The BSC is the basal member of a wedge of auriferous non-marine sediments of latest Cretaceous age which are tilted against the Tuapeka Fault Zone, a structure of regional dimensions. In particular mineralisation of elevated grade (which cannot yet be reliably estimated) appears to be concentrated in an elongate basement depression (ægutterÆ) of width around 100 m, variable thickness to a few metres, and axial length in excess of 500 m. The gutter plunges from the base of alluvial mining (where it has been partly exploited by underground methods) to depths of more than 100 m, beyond which it remains open and untested.   The prospects for a revival of mining at Wetherstones depend upon confirmation of what is here inferred to exist, and the discovery of additional gold. The economic prospects of the project however are enhanced by what is known or indicated of the geographic location, and anticipated geologic, mining and metallurgical characteristics of the mineralisation, and consequent anticipated environmental management issues.   The recognition of gold contained in pyrite in the BSC represents an upside to project economics which has never previously been evaluated. The Wetherstones Basin covers more than five square kilometres in areal extent. There is no modern exploration record of the majority of this area, leaving open the prospect of the discovery of additional gutters, and primary mineralisation in the underlying schist.   Australasia Gold Ltd has embarked on a program to reassess the potential resources of the Wetherstones gold mineralisation, and to evaluate the feasibility of mining.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Vein formation in response to deformation observed at Penjom reflects regional structural deformation within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia and specifically along the Bentong-Raub Suture zone.CITATION:Endut, Z, Ng, T F, Abdul Aziz, J H and Teh, G H, 2015. The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team. In south-eastern King Island, sediments and lavas of possible Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian age have been intruded by Lower Carboniferous granitic rocks.Within the contact aureole of the Bold Head adamellite north of Grassy the sediments and lavas have been metamorphosed to hornblende hornfels facies grade. The thermal gradient within the contact aureole was small, as the hornfelses exhibit no mineral zoning over a distance of 700 ft from the adamellite.Skarns occur both within the adamellite near its contact with the country rocks, and within the country rocks as partial replacements of three dolomitic limestone horizons. The latter type, the exoskarns, commonly have an andradite-salite mineralogy and carry economic concentrations of scheelite. These resulted from the replacement of carbonate beds due to both diffusion and infiltration metasomatism. Silica, tungsten, minor sulphides, and water were introduced from the adamellite, while aluminium and iron diffused from the enclosing pelitic sediments. Calcium released during marble replacement countered the loss of iron and aluminium in the pelitic hornfelses transforming them to diopside-rich rocks.Endoskarns within the adamellite are the result of two way diffusion across the contact; calcium, aluminium, and iron diffused from sediment to adamellite as silica, potassium, sodium, and water diffused from adamellite to the sediments. From estimates of the lithostatic pressure and mole fraction of CO2, the mineral assemblages of the hornfelses imply that the temperature of metamorphism lay between 530° and 710°C. This temperature range is in good agreement with minimum temperatures, between 610° and 710°C, for the recrystallization of the marbles of the contact aureole, calculated from the determinations of the solid solution of the magnesite molecule in calcite.

The Manantial Espejo district (Argentina) hosts a low-sulfidation epithermal Ag (-Au) deposit with a proven and probable reserve of 38 Moz Ag and 0.55 Moz Au. The district lies along the southern rim of the Deseado Massif in the Middle to Late Jurassic Chon Aike Province, a large bimodal igneous province dominated by silicic volcanic rocks that were formed during the initial extension leading to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The district stratigraphy consists of 162 to 161 Ma old rhyodacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks of the Chon Aike and La Matilde Formations, followed by 160 to 157 Ma old andesites and dacites of the informally called intermediate formation. The main stage of normal faulting post-dates the volcanic activity and coincides with the formation of the precious metal veins that were dated by 40Ar/39Ar on hydrothermal adularia with ages between 152.8 ¦ 0.8 Ma and 156.6 ¦ 0.8 Ma. Economically important hydrothermal veins show characteristic features of a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit with crustiform and colloform banding, bladed calcite replaced by quartz and abundant adularia. In the Maria Vein, the major orebody of the district, six hydrothermal stages are identified, but only stages one and four contributed metal. Lead isotope ratios in hydrothermal sulfides show a close relationship to ratios in feldspars from the district Chon Aike Formation, suggesting a common source for the Pb and possibly the precious metals in both the magmatic and hydrothermal products, or that the Pb in the hydrothermal veins was derived from the volcanic rocks.
