The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) /Calgary Coal Research Laboratory and the National Research Council in Ottawa established a joint working research group with industry to develop and test various computer models for application in surface coal mining operations in western Canada.The first part of the paper deals with the problems the group experienced during the past two years especially having model specification and requirements defined and understand site management practices.The second part of the paper deals with site specific development of general mine model for TransAlta Utilities' Highvale Mine in Alberta. Described here are the development of an interactive truck/shovel model for their three pit operation, selection and application of dragline model for tandem operation with the extended bench method, criteria for operational model of the five seams operation with selec-tive mining approach.

The hoisting system at the Newcrest Telfer mine is designed for a final duty of 7.35 million tonnes per annum at a hoisting distance of 1450 m. In terms of hoisting capacity (t/h) times hoisting distance it is one of the largest friction hoist installations. Initially, the hoist will be equipped for hoisting 6.5 Mtpa from 1100 m depth. This new drive technology is now well proven by ABB for mine hoist applications with the first installation in commercial operation since July 2001. To date 17 systems for medium voltage drives and another five for low voltage drives have been purchased from ABB for mine hoists. This paper will also deal with skip design and powerful data loggers with diagnostics for local and remote monitoring that are installed in the Telfer mine hoist.

During the development of the Neves-Corvo Underground Copper Mine, since 1981, inflow of water has been encountered in the mine workings, which consist of a ramp from surface 5 km long, a shaft 575 m deep and access crosscuts through the massive sulphide orebodies of Neves, Corvo and Graga, which are three of the four known deposits up today. Mine-hydrological studies have established the main characteristics of the hydrological system and its evolution in space and time. In a geological setting of low permeability rocks of Paleozoic age, tectonically affected by thrusts and faults, this has involved consideration of the relation with surface and ground water as a result of mine dewatering processes. The hydrological systems are described and summarized in this paper together with the techniques employed to study their origin and evolution, namely hydrochemistry, thermometry, piezometry and isotopic tracers.

The history of the discovery. and successful development of the offshore Gippsland Basin oil and gas fields has been well docu- mented in contemporarary and more recent industry and profes- sional literature. It is argued, that plate convergence, i.e. subduction, at other than right angles under a continental margin may lead to compensa-tional transcurrent faulting in the sialic environment. In this pro-cess the introduction of ultrabasic slivers, derived from the down-going oceanic crusial plate, along this fault may occur. This regi-me, both compressive overall and tensional along the transcurrent fault, will contain numerous indications for ongoing igneous and tectonic processes (such as volcanism, hot springs and frequent earthquakes).Examples for this scenario are California, the hinge between the Alpine- and Appennine orogens and the island of Sumatra.Igneous manifestations of subduction will be present both as inter-mediate intrusions and/or andesitic piles. The intermediate volca-nics may be intensely altered (chloritic, propylitic, argillic). Silice-ous breccias and banded chalcedonic sinters may be commonly found. This entire scenario is indicative for epithermal gold mine-ralisation.

Examination of Ihe calcination and carbonic acid leaching behaviour of a number of Australian magnesites shows that there are substantial differences between the massively crystalline and the cryptocrystalline forms of magnesites. Crude magnesias formed by calcination of the massive variety of magnesite have considerably smaller surface area and show lower rates of reaction with carbonic acid when compared With those derived from cryptocrystalline magnesites. In order lO producc a rcactivc magncsia from massive magnesite, the calcination conditions must be carefully controlled over a narrow temperature range (eg 680-720°C). For the cryptocrystalline calcines, the temperature of formation has little effect on reactivity.The results confirm the general applicability of the calcination/carbonic acid leach process for producing magnesia from magnesitc. If a mixed crystalline/cryplocrystalline feed is to be processed, then processing conditions must be optimized in terms of the behaviour of the crystalline component of the feed.

The Accha-Yanque zinc belt in southernPeru is a major zinc-lead rich metallogenic province. In the belt are comprised several non-sulfide-type occurrences, extending on the periphery of the Yauri-Apurfmac batholith (Oligocene-Miocene). Zinc mineralisation at Accha (almost fully oxidised) occurs in breccias of sedimentary and tectonic origin in the limestone of the Ferrobamba Fm (Middle to Upper Cretaceous). Non-sulfide association consists mainly of smithsonite and hemimorphite replacing both primary ore minerals and carbonate host rocks. Mn(hydr)oxides and Zn-clays (sauconite), can be locally very abundant. Differences in mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals, as well as the composition of the host rock can have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption, and therefore on the economic value of the deposit. Commercial interest in refractory gold is increasing rapidly. This trend is supported by the work patterns of Amdel, where, apartfrom routine process- ing of free-milling and refractory ores, the majority of testing now includes biological and pressure oxidation studies to enhance gold recoveries. Central Mineralogical Services have examined, among other ores, an apparently unique type of refractory coating. A summary is given of experience at Optimet Laboratories, Pty., Limited. Research into nitric acid pre-oxidation, underway at the South Australian Institute of Technology since 1987, has shown significant improvements in gold recoveries, and in some cases, large reductions in reagent consump- tions. Three final-year student research projects were undertaken in 1990, jointly between the University of Adelaide and the S.A. Institute of Tech- nology. These projects involved biological pre-oxidation, pressure leaching, and Scanning Electron Microscope examination of refractory ores, and the resultant pre-oxidation and cyanidation products.

Exploration by Cyprus Minerals Australia Company (formerly Amoco Minerals) has successfully outlined significant Au-(Cu) mineralisation at Starra, 150 kilometres south-east of Mt. Isa. Mineralisation is stratabound and localized in deformed and metamorphosed ironstones (B.I.F?) and iron-oxide bearing schists of the mid-Proterozoic Staveley Formation. Over 90% of the presently outlined potential ore occurs in 4 discrete zones within a strike length of 3.5 kilometres. The inferred geological resource in these zones is approximately 6 million tonnes grading 5 grams per tonne gold and 2% copper. Roughly half of this is open-pittable, but more rigidly applied mining criteria will probably reduce the exploitable tonnage. Detailed infill drilling is in progress and a pre-feasibility study has commenced. The joint venture partners, Cyprus Minerals (75%) and Elders Resources (25%) expect to make a development decision by the end of this year.

A substitute for rutile can be produced by leaching natural or pre-treated ilmenite in hydrochloric acid. Ilmenite in its natural form is an extraordinarily inactive mineral from which the selective removal of iron is rather difficult. The reactivity of ilmenite so that it can be leached with dilute hydro- chloric acid (=2O% w/w) can be enhanced by pre-treatment steps of oxidation and re- duction. The temperatures at which oxidation and reduction are carried out have an effect on both the kinetics of these steps and the leaching kinetics and optimum temperatures for oxidation and reduction are 950 and 850¦C respectively. The mechanism of leaching of iron from pretreated ilmenite and the effects of rate of agitation, temperature, acid con- centration and addition of ferrous chloride to hydrochloric acid on leaching kinetics and production of fines are discussed in the paper.

An analysis of pumping figures suggests that there are two distinct styles of water inflow patterns in Zambia's mines. Carbonate hosted orebodies (Kabwe and Nampundwe) display a characteristic seasonal variation in water inflow with peak pumping showing a short time lag with respect to the rainfall pattern. Aquifer characteristics are controlled by secondary, weathering enhanced, near surface phenomena. Non-carbonate hosted orebodies such as those of the Copperbelt (Konkola and Nkana) occur in successions of highly variable lithology and consequently there are stacked aquifers of variable character. Inflow of water does not display seasonal variation. The major factors affecting the amount of inflow are the structural setting, the geometry of the orebody and the local lithostratigraphy. Thus the Konkola orebodies which occur in a saddle shaped open ended basin result in what is probably the wettest mine in the world, pumping some 376,000 cubic metres of water a day.

The main components of face design are the power loader, face conveyor and powered support system and the interaction of these components determines the effectiveness of strata control. A major influence upon the interrelationship of this equipment is the geological environment, of which seam thickness appears to play an important role. Recent thick seam experience indicates a significantly different characteristic behaviour pattern from that observed in thin seams The structural integrity of the face wall is particularly influenced by seam discontinuities such as natural joint planes and mining-induced fractures in the yield zone ahead of the faceline. In addition, the presence of stone bands or dirt partings in the seam offers interfaces for uncontrolled release of blocky material. Some case study experience at British collieries provides a comparison with performance data at a specific location, that highlights the importance of coal face layout and design.

Lake Kopiago is located some 71km northwest of Tari in the Southern Highlands Province and lies on the northern edge of the Papuan Fold Belt. The area is underlain by middle Miocene carbonate and fine grained clastic sediments intruded by late Miocene hornblende gabbros.Two mineral deposits occur to the south of Lake Kopiago. These are the Bisamu gold prospect and the Wunaki zinc-lead gossan.The Bisamu deposit consists of a calcic skarn assemblage which is geochemically anomalous in gold, silver, copper, zinc, cobalt, bismuth and tellurium. The prograde mineral assemblage includes garnet, clino-pyroxene and epidote whereas the retrograde assemblage includes epidote, quartz, actinolite and chlorite. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulphide with minor pyrite and marcasite and trace chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Minor magnetite is also present. The Bisamu skarn shows many of the features typical of gold-skarn type mineral-isation.

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

The metallurgical testwork program is generally the most important critical path item for the completion of a bankable feasibility study and hence can become the critical parameter for financing of potential mining projects. This paper presents generic detailed testwork programs suitable for bankable feasibility studies for a gold leaching and polymetallic flotation study. The design of the metallurgical testwork program for each of the two differing processes is discussed and the critical factors that effect the selection of the testwork programs are highlighted. The importance of the metallurgical testwork results in predicting the metal recoveries and cash flow prediction for the project is presented. The detail of the testwork programs costing is broken into activity based methods based on the laboratory and management hours/costs, such that generic rule of thumb costing guidelines can be generated. The scheduling, costing and importance of the metallurgical testwork program to process feasibility studies are discussed in this paper.

This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. At various decision points in the development of a project, a developer, joint venture partner or financial institution may require an independent review of the basic assumptions and technical aspects of the project. This type of review or technical audit is becoming a more common feature of the project development process. This feature has evolved because of the need of investors and lenders to be more confident of the viability of a project by the confirmation of its technical and cost aspects. Technical Audits offset some uncertainties introduced by the combination of longer development periods for, projects and the highly dynamic world economic scene. This paper reviews the place, nature and process of the technical audit by examining the circumstances when it might be needed, the typical scope of work or brief, the responsibilities of and relationship between the auditor and the client, and the auditing procedure. Detailed aspects of technical audits are discussed followed by a case study of the Hail Creek Coal Project Audit.

The total systems model for underground oal mining planning and design is a set of omputer programs which encompasses a realis- ic reproduction of the interaction between he geological, environmental, equipment, meth- ds and the health and safety aspects of the ining plan. The total system includes nine ajor subsystems - Geology and Reserves, Meth- ne Generator, Roof Support, Subsidence, Pro- uction, Rail Haulage, Cost, Water Generator, nd Ventilation. The subsystems themselves re divided into two categories based on the requency with which they are executed. Event riented Subsystems are executed either inde- endently, or at discrete intervals when cer- tain specific events occur. Dynamic subsystems 'unction interactively during the production :ycle. They transfer data to or request data `rom event oriented subsystems only when spe- ific events occur. Three specific areas for iodel application are in the measurement of system performance, the development of the '_ nterrelationships of the components of deep Wining process and the evaluation of new and Lnnovative mining technology.

Hydrometallurgy has a history of over 300 years with copper leaching and cementation having been exploited in Spain as far back as 1670. Since then, hydrometallurgy has become an integral, expanding branch of extractive metallurgy. This paper reviews major developments in hydrometallurgy over the past century with emphasis on recent commercial developments and their impact on the mining and metals industries. The environment in which these developments has taken place has changed significantly in the past two decades and many factors, often non-technical, have emerged as constraints on the operation of existing plants and the expansion and development of new hydrometallurgical operations. Finally, a number of possible new developments that will shape the future of hydrometallurgy in the new millennium are discussed, particularly as they relate to the assimilation of technical advances in other areas of science and engineering. The impact of current trends in the education of hydrometallurgists and the provision of research in support of these future developments is also addressed.

A nuclear technique for the analysis of copper in bulk materials has been developed and successfully field tested at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The technique utilises the gamma-ray resonance scattering process. A bulk analyser based on this technique gives a rapid and accurate measurement of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel aver- aged over a large mass of sample, typically 20 kg. The only sample preparation required for accurate analysis is crushing to -2.5 cm. At Mount Isa over 100 mineral samples covering a wide range of rock types and copper contents were analysed. Bulk analyser assays and chemical laboratory assays agreed closely for underground pillar-extraction and geolog- ical chip samples, conveyor belt samples, and finely ground samples from the ore concentrator. For the concentrator samples, the root mean square deviation between bulk analyser and chem- ical laboratory assays was 0.06 wt.% copper. The chemical assay errors for these samples were about 0.06 wt.%
