Acidless and fluoless flotation is a new method for separating feldspar from quartz at the natural pH value of tap water in the absence of any acid and fluoride and other inorganic reagents. The paper introduces the production application of this method in plants and research results on the mechanism involved in the flotation method.

The Merlin Zone, a 2008 high-grade Mo-Re discovery, is a part of the Mount Dore Deposit in the Eastern Succession of the Mount Isa Inlier in Queensland, Australia. Hosted by carbonaceous metapelites and phyllites, the Merlin mineralisation comprises molybdenite veins, breccia infillings, stylolitic fracture fillings, and disseminations. Because rhenium is geochemically similar to molybdenum and commonly associated with it, global production of rhenium has been mostly a by-product of molybdenum refining. The high-grade rhenium in the Merlin Zone is an exciting discovery that is expected to become a direct source of rhenium. At the time of discovery, quality assurance (QA) procedures for rhenium were not in place at the Merlin Zone; therefore, they needed to be developed.The Merlin Zone was discovered using reverse circulation drilling, which led to concerns about molybdenite loss due to poor sample recovery. The twinning of the discovery hole with diamond core demonstrated a two-fold increase in molybdenum grade over several tens of metres. Consequently, the resources of the Merlin Zone were defined using assays from diamond drill core.Early analytical work, which was initially done only for molybdenum, comprised geochemical analysis with an aqua regia digestion, which have poor precision and can be biased low. Although initial testing for rhenium used similar procedures to those for molybdenum, a scarcity of commercial rhenium reference materials led to a validation process using neutron activation analyses and different digestions. This resulted in introduction of four-acid digestion assays, development of matrix-matched reference materials, and improvements to the quality of molybdenum and rhenium assays for reporting resources. Coarse and pulp duplicates were used to check for sampling bias and to ensure that levels of precision were adequate for the style of mineralisation and analytical methods. In addition, the direct and consistent geochemical correlation between molybdenum and rhenium provided another method for checking analyses.

Commissioning of the Cannington processing plant began in October 1997. The nameplate capacity (of 1.55 million tonnes of ore per annum) was achieved relatively quickly. Since then (like many mines) the operation has strived to increase throughput and improve valuable metal recoveries, to offset declining head grades and lift the value of the operation. The processing plant now has the capability of treating over 3.2 million tonnes of ore per annum and in financial year 2005/06 the combined concentrate production exceeded 600 000 wet tonnes, approximately 80 per cent above concentrate output in the first full year of operation (at the design feed rate). This improved performance was achieved by making changes and additions to each of the major unit processes û primary grinding, flotation, leaching, filtering and paste fill preparation. The changes have included: adding a fines flotation circuit, expanding the grinding circuit, adding a pebble crusher, switching from continuous to batch leaching, building paste conveyors and decommissioning the column flotation cleaning circuits. This paper reviews these changes, outlines the current operating practices and discusses the challenges or opportunities that remain.

Collectors are used to impart hydrophobicity on particles thus increasing their chances of reporting to the froth phase. Also, the extent to which naturally hydrophobic gangue particles, such as talcaceous minerals, report to the froth can be reduced by the use of depressants. Thus the use of collectors and depressants will directly influence the extent to which hydrophobic particles report to the froth. However these hydrophobic particles will also have a direct effect on the characteristics of the froth phase, more strongly hydrophobic particles causing a reduction in the stability of the froth with the expected concomitant effects on grade and recovery. This study included microflotation (ie frothless flotation) and batch flotation of various ores using a number of different collectors and depressants and a newly developed froth imaging device (SmartfrothTM). Flotation performance was characterised by mass and water recovery, and recoveries and grades of the valuables. This paper shows how the various reagents influenced the behaviour of the pulp and froth phases. The critical importance of managing the type and dosage of reagents used in flotation with a view to optimising their influence on the froth phase is discussed.

So many ceramics look the same, but are they?In the past 20 years, there have been significant changes in the materials available, as well as changes to the supply chain, for ceramics used in wear applications in the hard rock mining industry. The biggest change in supply has been from the Chinese market, with many suppliers promoting their products as æstate of the artÆ. Some of them are state of the art, but are they all? There will be some concluding remarks in this respect.There are still some outstanding new developments coming from the more traditional suppliers and these should not be ignored. However, as an end user, how can one be sure that the product received meets the technical specifications of that material?This paper will address some of the questions on how to differentiate between different materials by giving a technical overview of the current (but not exclusive) range of popular ceramics, plus incorporating how these ceramics are used in process plant products by presenting case studies. The presentation will include technical data coupled with micrographs of various ceramics to illustrate just why they are different.It will also be shown that by careful selection of the wear material, it is possible to gain significant benefit when using superior materials in an ore processing plant. The impact of cost of the products, life, process efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs will be considered using cyclone components as an example.The properties (including the microstructures) of the various ceramics will be compared to the application in order to get some understanding of what is considered good or bad.Misra and Finnie (1982) summarised their paper, æA review of Abrasive Wear of MetalsÆ by saying:à it is difficult to give guidelines for selecting materials for abrasive wear resistance. Each application is a different one, and a design engineer has to take into account various other factors such as impact, fatigue and corrosion which are often coupled with abrasive wear. The raw material handling complex at the Durgapur steel plant provides iron ore, crushed coke and flux to two sinter plants. Either some facilities were not envisaged or not properly designed before the project stage which caused problems during operation of the plant. The absence of an in situ roll turning facility, used to increase maintenance activities for disassembly, transportation of rolls to central machine shop and assembly of rolls, led to decreased crusher availability and increased activities for the maintenance crew. The provision of a smaller vibro feeder/screen in place of a suitable sized screen caused jamming of the screen deck, adversely affecting screening efficiency and the crushing index of crushed coke. Some design modifications and developmental work was undertaken, such as the development and installation of an in situ roll turning facility in the existing limited space, achieving low feed (0.1 - 0.2 mm/rev), lower cutting speed of 30 - 40 m/minute for 350 BHN hard roll, which was also a difficult engineering challenge to bring within the tolerable limit of vibration. This was successfully achieved. Modifications to the screen deck, introduction of differential speed crushing and modification to the vibro screen and vibro feeder for uniform distribution of feed have been incorporated. These innovative design modifications to the in situ roll turning have led to a drastic decrease in maintenance activities and an improvement in the crushing index. Modifications to the screen have resulted in the elimination of jamming and improved screening. Modifications to the vibro screen before the primary crushers and to the vibro feeder before the secondary crushers have prevented excessive wear in the central portion of rolls, ultimately leading to increased roll life. Incorporation of differential speed crushing has resulted in an increased crushing index and decreased generation of micro fines. All the above modifications have led to distinct improvements in equipment availability, increased roll life and a decrease in maintenance activities and improvement in crushed coke granulametry, ultimately resulting in improved productivity and quality of iron ore agglomeration at the sinter plant. The innovative design modifications mentioned above are discussed in detail in this paper.

The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. Traditional acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) wastewater treatment focuses on the iron co-precipitation/adsorption process as this is a very effective method of reducing heavy metals, including copper, lead, zinc, arsenic, etc, to parts per billion (ppb) levels in AMD wastewater streams. One of the drawbacks to this method however is the large volume of sludge produced and subsequent disposal costs for the mine site concerned.A proprietary metals treatment system called high density sludge (denoted HDS) which significantly reduces the quantity of waste generated is described in this paper. This process generates a dewatered sludge that contains in the order of 50 to 55 per cent solids. This sludge is denser than conventionally dewatered sludge, which typically contains only 20 to 30 per cent solids. This advanced process has a wide range of applications and can be easily retrofitted into existing AMD treatment systems. It has been successfully installed at several mine sites to treat AMD wastewaters. Mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems in road tunnels are constrained by the traffic envelope and the construction profile. Whilst these spatial constraints are often ælocked inÆ early in the design process, the detailed M&E design continues for some considerable time after key civil engineering issues have been resolved. Ventilation design criteria for both normal and emergency operation often involves considerable negotiation with a wide range of stakeholders. Final system performance and spatial requirements are only finally resolved when suppliers are selected following the tender process. Lighting design is dependent upon a wide range of factors including tunnel lining materials and associated colours as well as agreed maintenance regimes. Cabling systems can only be developed when the general arrangement for power distribution is agreed and a system of substation, switchrooms and equipment rooms is in place. Many other systems such as fire protection and communications facilities fill the available space beyond the traffic envelope, where physical, structural and æsight lineÆ requirements must all be accommodated. The more co-ordinated civil engineering and M&E design is and the earlier the process starts the better the outcomes for all parties.

Fragmentation modelling has been in use in the mining industry for a long time; however, there are still some aspects to tackle with regard to its use for strategic/planning and day-to-day purposes.On one hand, an important amount of resources are allocated to the task of calibrating and validating a good fragmentation model. Nonetheless, errors during the implementation stage introduce uncertainty into the prediction.On the other hand, it is common practice in the mining industry to use only discrete values to represent the fragmentation from blasting (k20, k50, k80), which provides a biased interpretation of the situation as, for instance, the best and worst possible cases are not taken into account. This is particularly critical when a continuous improvement philosophy has been adopted and modelling is used to either modify the drilling and blasting designs or plan ahead.It is well known that every site has particular conditions (rock mass, equipment, drilling and loading practices, among others) that often define unique trends in implementation. These trends can be captured using statistic and probabilistic techniques and then used as proxies for further analysis.This paper explores the potential of including implementation data in the form of probabilistic distributions into the Swebrec model to improve the performance of this engineering tool during the decision-making process.The fragmentation results of four designs were modelled using three different degrees of accuracy in the implementation for the burden, spacing and explosive column length.The data analysis showed that the probabilistic approach helps to achieve a broader perspective regarding the fragmentation that it is possible to obtain and the implications for the subsequent processes. The past 100 years the mining industry can be characterised by a focus on increasing financial returns often to the detriment of social, human, manufactured and environmental capitals. Despite the sustainable development principles promoted by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Equator Principles and the African Mining Vision, which should have enhanced project promoters’ ‘licence to operate’ within a host community or nation, the industry has often failed to integrate proven innovations and best practices that enhance sustainability outcomes for mineral resource projects. This failure has led to delays, the abandonment of projects, with value destroyed for promoters, governments, host community and investors.The paper will outline the application of proven innovations, Enterprise Optimisation (EO), and Sustainable Operations (SUSOP®), during the pre-feasibility phase of a project. The changes in layout and design over 48 years, from the first crushing and shiploading plant installed at Whyalla in 1915, up to the present plant being built at Koolan Island, Yampi Sound may be summarized as follows.1. Smaller motors and lower power consumption have resulted froma. oil lubrication, where practicable, in place of grease,b. a high pressure "oil-lift" device to reduce starting torque in crushers with white metal bearings, andc. roller bearings in place of white metal.2. Short centre drives with pivot-based motors permit controlled loads on bearings and a reduction in size of crusher houses and motor rooms.3. Dust proofing and pressurising of crusher houses and motor rooms reduces working temperatures and improves cleanliness.4. Variable speed pan feeders give improved plant control, with the use of one man only, and remove the need for large surge bins between crushing stages.5. The use of diesel quarry trucks to dump ore through a "drive over"tip results in faster truck cycles.6. Elevated cylindrical silos with air operated chutes, replace long horizontal storage bins with multiple manually operated side discharge chutes for loading rail cars, and give faster and more accurate truck loading. The silos are charged by belt conveyors with automatic distributors.7. Increased shipping bin capacity (40,000 tons at Whyalla and 6O,OOO tons being built at Koolan Island) caters for the bigger vessels now in use and envisaged for the future. Automatic travelling distributors deliver ore to the bins in layers to ensure, maximum mixing and a more uniform grade for blast furnaces.INTRODUCTIONThe Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd has six major crushing plants in Australia at its principal sources of raw material. These are at Iron Knob bench G, Iron Knob scree ore plant, Iron Baron, and Cockatoo Island, all of which are ironstone operations. The other two plants are at Rapid Bay, a limestone quarry, and at Ardrossan, which is the Company's only source of dolomite.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. Block caving is becoming a more widely adopted mining method allowing for underground massive low grade orebodies to be extracted economically. Underbreak during cave propagation is difficult to predict in terms of recovery and is not well-researched due to the small number of caving operations. During mining of E26 Lift 2 (E26L2) block cave at CMOC Northparkes Mines, a wedge of high grade material failed to cave, even with the assistance of preconditioning and subsequent attempts to induce caving. The ultimate solution for recovery of the uncaved wedge was the establishment of the E26 sublevel cave (SLC), which commenced mining in 2015, with production following in 2016. The SLC provides approximately 1Mtpa to supplement the lowering grade of the current E48 block cave feed. Applying the sublevel caving methodology to recover block cave underbreak has proven challenging. The impact of the caving stresses and preconditioning of the wedge have caused production limitations requiring continual remediation throughout production of the E26 SLC. The dependence on remediation work created a roadblock to implementing precharging as the prevalence of brow loss raised concerns over the inability to hook up the charged ring. In 2018, a wireless initiation trial was completed in the E26 SLC over 24 rings. The trial showed that precharging was achievable in this environment and greatly improved the safety of charge up personnel.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. "In March 2015 Northparkes Mines (NPM) installed a process mineralogy facility on-site. The laboratory included a TESCAN TIMA scanning electron microscope (SEM) and was the first SEM facility to be commissioned on a mine site in Australia. While the initial intent of the quantitative mineralogy laboratory was to provide information to drive processing plant improvements, in practice, it has been utilised for so much more and is now serving as an integral link between departments on-site. This multidisciplinary approach to orebody knowledge is a new strategy for NPM whereby all parts of the value chain are aligned towards the common goal of achieving process efficiency and stability while still maintaining high throughputs. The NPM experience is presented as a case study to illustrate how on-site process mineralogy can drive a realignment in business strategy with a common goal of mill optimisation, stability and more realistic forecasting through orebody knowledge and information sharing between disciplines.Citation:Jones, K and Morgan, D, 2016. "Sustainable development has become an issue of ever increasing importance to the mining industry. The Ernst & Young (EY) mining industry risk radar regularly shows several sustainability elements in the top ten risks, with social license the number three risk in the 2014/15 survey. This is supported by the Fraser Institute survey results of 2013 showing that 36 per cent of responding companies indicated public opposition had affected their permitting and approvals process.Addressing these issues in a strategic way across a mining business that is then translatable to actions at operational level has remained an elusive goal in the industry. In addition the environment and community issues are commonly viewed as somewhat separate from financial and production issues and as a compliance cost rather than a value add. In their Harvard Business Review paper of 2011, ‘Creating Shared Value’, Porter and Kramer outline changes in thinking required for companies to improve their business sustainably through considering the societal issues impacted by their operations and products. Along the lines of ‘doing more with less’ companies’ value chains can be redefined to reduce energy, transport, water or other resource usage leaving additional resource for societal usage and/or reducing environmental impacts. This paper explores the linking of the holistic Five Capitals-based approach with the creating shared value (CSV) concept to help businesses unleash the benefits of innovation. Previous papers have demonstrated the potential for Five Capitals approach to create strategic value through sustainable development. Building on previous work, this paper provides an overview of the current status of holistic approaches to mine management and presents the application of the CSV concept on an African mine currently undertaking capitals-based strategic planning. Mining companies are not ill-informed on the topic of community health. There have been a number of research studies that have illuminated community health issues associated with mining, especially in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. However, what is missing amongst the literature is the perspective of mine managers and mining executives on this topic. This is important as mine managers and executives face a number of issues related to community health and are under pressure to consider the topic in more detail. This paper presents results from an exploratory qualitative investigation based on grounded theory research techniques into current community health considerations from the perspectives of mine executives and mine managers working in Western Canada. Interviews were conducted between February and May 2012 with 11 mining versus ten mining executives and managers who represented operating mines or mining umbrella organisations in Western Canada. Participants report on general community health issues that are perceived to be important, the perceived role that the mining sector should play?in contributing to community health and how this differs in Western Canada as compared to locations abroad, and?risks companyÆs face in making community health contributions. This paper concludes by drawing attention to pressing health needs that are present in Northern, rural and Aboriginal populations in Western Canada and provides a platform for future research initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of communities associated with the mining industry. Air leakage through rock fractures in coal mining is a major cause of coal spontaneous combustion. In order to overcome the deficiency of the existing fire control technology and prevent coal spontaneous combustion by isolating coal from oxygen, the article proposes a novel technology of inorganic solidified foam (ISF) with high expansion to fill fractures effectively. ISF consists of fly ash, cement, setting accelerator, redispersible polymer powder, water and aqueous foam. For preparing homogeneous and stable ISF, a preparation system with a pore type foam generator, a mixer device installed with a hollow shaft and helical blades, air compressor, slush pump and monitoring instruments was developed, and the working principles of key devices were elucidated. Based on a series of experiments on the different ratios of each component material and technological parameters of the preparation system, ISF with a foam expansion ratio of 8~10 and dry density of 250–400 kg/m3 was prepared. The relationship between elastic compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and density was summarised. Based on the injection experiment for fracture of loose coal pile with high temperature, the characteristics of sealing air leakage, compressive strength, thermal insulation, flow and cooling of ISF in the fresh state were investigated, indicating that ISF can effectively cut off the air leakage and cover the coal sample to reduce the temperature in the earlier stage, and ISF can remain stable and not crack. The ISF was applied to Luwa coalmine to seal small coal pillar pressure fractures and loose coal fractures in goaf. After press-casting the ISF in Luwa coalmine, the pressure-difference of inner-outer increased, meaning the effect of external conditions on the pressure-difference decreased, showing that it could plug the air leakage effectively.CITATION:Qin, B T, Shi, Q L, Lu, Y, Zhu, C, Li, F L and Jia, Y W, 2015.
