Empirical methods are deeply rooted in geomechanics. This is a consequence of the recognised complexity of the nature of the rock mass. The usual assumptions of material continuity, homogeneity, isotropicity and linear elasticity often assumed for soil, concrete and steel are difficult to justify in a rock mass except for mathematical convenience. These assumptions form the bases for most mechanistic, analytical and numerical methods in geomechanics. Believers in empirical methods argue that the complexity of the rock mass and its interaction with structures developed in it is adequately accounted for in empirical methods, which compensate for our ignorance.Franklin (1993) defines empirical design as quantified judgement based on experience. He further states that empirical methods often prove ‘closer’ to the ‘truth’ than the apparently more precise predictions of theoretical analysis, adding that based on real data empirical methods provide a standard against which theoretical predictions are measured and can be judged. This paper takes a critical look at the common empirical methods in geomechanics – rock mass classification systems (Bieniawski, 1973; Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; Hoek, 1994a), Laubscher block caving design rules (Laubscher, 1994), the stability graph (Mathews et al, 1981), pillar design equations (Salamon and Munro, 1967; Hedley and Grant, 1972; and their derivatives), pillar design chart (Lunder and Pakalnis, 1997) and failure criteria (Hoek and Brown, 1980; and its derivatives). The common thread in the application of these methods is that in most cases they are often applied blindly without an understanding of the underlying assumptions and database limits. This paper emphasises that users of these methods need to know the underlying assumptions, database limits and inherent hidden risks that are often unmentionable for their satisfactory use. Given the ever increasing quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW), one of the most challenging issues presently facing policymakers and public administrators in Italy concerns how to organise and manage collection and recycling and to understand whether and to what extent recycled aggregate can complement natural building aggregates in a sustainable supply mix (SSM). The paper presents the results of a research aimed at analysing energy and environmental implications of the C&DW recycling chain in the administrative territory of Provincia di Torino in northern Italy. In respect of a population of about 2.25 million inhabitants, the annual production of C&DW in the area under study is 1.8 Mt. A combined geographical information system (GIS) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was developed, paying attention to the geographical location, land use, transportation network and avoided landfill: crucial issues for sustainable planning and management. Around 90 recycling plants were classified according to the size, typology (stationary, semi-mobile and mobile) and physical- mechanical characteristics of the recycled aggregate. Under different assumptions relevant to the delivery distance, and considering the typology and grade of recycled aggregate, as well as local availability of natural aggregates, it was possible to evaluate the geographical coverage of aggregates demand and to use LCA in order to identify and quantify energy and environmental indicators.

Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. In Australian coalmines there are a number of coal quality parameters that are measured by analysing samples from boreholes. The data points are used to generate spatial models of these parameters, typically using inverse distance as an interpolation method. Numerous additional boreholes are drilled which have geophysical logs measured downhole but from which no coal quality samples are taken. Full suites of coal quality analyses are expensive and time consuming to drill and sample. If geophysical proxies for coal quality could be used, this would greatly improve the accuracy of the resource estimation without additional cost.This paper examines two of the most important coal quality parameters – ash and volatile matter – and assesses the results of a number of geostatistical interpolation methods. The aim is to improve the accuracy of the interpolated models. Auxiliary variables from geophysical logs are also trialled to improve the estimation.A multivariate analysis of ash, volatile matter and several auxiliary variables of a selected coal seam was undertaken in a spatial context, using variography. This was used to construct a model of co-regionalisation that relates all of the variables as manifestations of an underlying geological theme.The traditional inverse distance interpolation approach was compared to ordinary kriging, universal kriging, co-kriging, regression kriging and kriging with external drift approaches. The relative merits of the six interpolation methods were compared by removing all points, one at a time and estimating at the thus known location. The mean error and the root mean square error were evaluated as a measure of bias and precision.This paper demonstrates that there is significant opportunity to improve the estimations of coal quality when using kriging with external drift. For example, the results show that when using the depth of a sample as an external drift variable there is a significant improvement in the accuracy of estimation for volatile matter. Furthermore, when using borehole wireline density logs as an auxiliary variable for ash content, there is improvement in the estimation of the in situ ash. The underpinning reasons for this are discussed in the context of the underlying geology and the physical properties of the coal. These findings hold promise for utilising cheaper proxies for coal quality parameters to dramatically improve data density and the quality of estimations.CITATION:Jeuken, R, Xu, C and Dowd, P, 2017. The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

Magnetite mineralisation within the South Middleback Range has been known since the early 1930s; however, it was not until 1989 that BHP (then owners of the Middleback Ranges mining leases) drilled 10 700 m of diamond core into what was then known as the Iron Duchess low-grade deposit. In 2002 a review of Iron Resources left in the Middleback Ranges and the identification of downstream processing benefits using magnetite as a primary feed source led to the commencement of an 18 000 m resource drilling program of the high-grade core of the Iron Duchess low-grade orebody (renamed the Iron Magnet deposit). This paper describes the geology, processes and procedures used since drilling recommenced in early 2003. The Iron Magnet deposit is located 53 km southwest of Whyalla in the South Middleback Range, South Australia. It is a Paleoproterozoic stratabound magnetite deposit that lies down-dip and lateral to the Iron Duke hematite deposit, hosted within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation of the Hutchison Group meta-sediments within the Cleve subdomain of the Gawler Craton. Magnetite bearing host units within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation can be divided into a æmixedÆ basal sequence, a lower iron carbonate unit, a middle iron talc unit and an upper iron silica unit, all units grading up sequence and laterally into one another. The magnetite mineralisation is hydrothermal in origin. The strongest consistent mineralisation coincides with the iron carbonate unit, and the hematite orebodies of the Iron Duke are interpreted to represent up-dip supergene enrichment of the same unit. The Iron Magnet occurs within a large-scale parasitic syncline-anticline pair on the west limb of a larger syncline. Major bounding north-south shear zones occur on the east and west sides of the deposit. Cross-cutting west-northwest, northwest, northeast and east-northeast trending faults displace mineralisation. The commencement of drilling in 2003 lead to the migration of geological and geochemical databases, re-logging and re-assaying of all old cores that intersected the deposit, updating of logging codes and procedures, and strict Qa/Qc procedures to ensure the study satisfied JORC standards. External consultants were used for auditing and bench marking. The strong geophysical responses of magnetite and the wealth of close spaced ground magnetic and gravity data already completed over the Middleback Ranges allowed for refining of drill hole targets for the drilling program. It also provided an indirect method for ascertaining magnetite grade and tonnage volumes.

Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. When executing a ventilation change the mine ventilation circuit is in a state of flux throughout the entire change period with discrete mine areas both under ventilated and/or over ventilated during the change process. Whilst routine risk reduction strategies such as removing electrical power and people from the mine are commonly deployed it is wise to complete the change in the shortest practical time frame. This not only minimises the chance of unacceptable concentrations of contaminants accumulating around the mine but reduces the impedance on production activities which are routinely suspended during these change periods. This paper firstly highlights the importance of the maintenance of an accurate ventilation model and discusses issues which should be considered to assist to maintain in it a suitable state of health. Further it provides some tips on how to monitor that your model is in an acceptable state of tune so that it can be confidently deployed in the change process. Finally, it details the sequential process how a finely tuned and accurate ventilation model can be utilised to carry out major ventilation changes according to appliance pressure adjustments only and without the need to constantly measure and check resultant branch flows throughout the whole change process. Also discussed are some simple practical tips which will help ensure that the ventilation change process will go according to the devised plan on the day and in the most appropriate order including checking the efficiency and accuracy of the change, after it is completed.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Nova Operation (Nova) is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). Discovered by Sirius Resources NL (Sirius) in 2012 and acquired by IGO in 2015, the Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) occurs within the Fraser Zone of the AlbanyFraser Orogen. Nova-Bollinger is a complex nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) magmatic intrusive sulfide deposit, which is characterised by high-grade folded and undulating breccia lodes that host the bulk of the payable metals. Significant sulfide mineralisation is also found in several magmatic intrusive styles including net-textured, disseminated and blebby styles. A smaller but material volume of sulfides has also been remobilised into the deposit’s footwall rocks as ‘stringer’ bands in metasediments, or as discrete massive sulfide lenses. When interpolating Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) block grades in the presence of locally varying grade connectivity trends, such as folds or undulations, the sample search neighbourhood, which is used to identify the composites subset that is used for each block estimate, should be oriented to match the local trends. In theory, the most robust method of estimation where locally varying angles (LVAs) are applied to search neighbourhoods, are techniques where the composites and the blocks to be estimated are transformed to an unfolded coordinate system (UCS). However, UCS methods can be tedious to implement and require subjective decisions to be made that cannot always be fully defended. An alternative LVA method commonly used in the industry is dynamic anisotropy (DA), which is much simpler to implement and is often assumed (but not that often demonstrated) to result in similar results to UCS-style estimation. In 2018, Nova’s Mine Geology team (MGT) estimated the grades and density of the Nova-Bollinger MRE using the UCS approach. For the 2020 MRE update, Nova’s MGT tested and compared the USC grade interpolation method with the DA approach. As applied to the Nova-Bollinger’s 2020 MRE, the comparison, advantages and disadvantages of the two estimation methods are the subject of this paper

Since 2009, the Northern Territory and Australian governments have been working under a national partnership arrangement to inform a rehabilitation plan for the former Rum Jungle uranium mine. Part of the rehabilitation strategy is to backfill a flooded former pit (Pit), which extends down to 100m below the current pit lake surface and was historically partially backfilled with uranium tailings. It is proposed to utilise the remaining pit volume below water level to sub-aqueously store Potentially Acid Forming (PAF-I) waste rock which currently occupies large stockpiles across the site. The rehabilitation design and planning process undertaken to develop a strategy commensurate to project objectives and construction constraints involved the establishment of key constraints derived from the analysis of historic data sources and preliminary design efforts. Tabled strategies were balanced against dependent project tasks and project objectives, especially surrounding minimising disturbance of highly contaminated materials within the Pit. Ideas were developed in conjunction with industry input and review of case histories to develop a remediation solution that is constructible within the project timeframe and constraints.

Consultants in the mining industry have the opportunity to visit interesting deposits all over the world. Each deposit has its own set of challenges to face when it comes to defining and understanding the deposit geology and the economics to make it viable for extraction. Some of the challenges can include appropriate data capture, sampling techniques, structural characteristics, geochemistry, geophysics, lithology definition, and economic boundaries. It is essential that the practices used at each deposit (eg drilling, sampling, geological modelling, resource estimation etc) are documented and the results obtained are robust and defensible. The Competent Person is not always aware of instances where their resource estimation practices have not been substantiated. ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’ is a phrase frequently used during a mineral resource audit. Technical work to substantiate drilling, sampling, density, assaying, geological modelling and estimation processes is not always completed. Audited Competent Persons often comment: • ‘I was unaware that this was required.’ • ‘I have not had training in this area and do not know how to complete the checks required.’ • ‘This is how we’ve always done it.’ Examples of audits where it was found that geological practices were not substantiated are examined here. A discussion is included on why substantiation of these practices is important, and potential reasons as to why there are instances of unsubstantiated processes and practices are discussed.

Since the days of Adam Smith and Milton Friedman the discussion of corporate citizenship and sustainability has been flooded with multiple contradictions, with proponents of sustainability saying that it is a crucial cog in the business strategy, while those against, maintain that æthe business of business is businessÆ and therefore sustainability issues are just add-ons. Sustainability arises from a deeply held vision by corporate leaders that businesses can and should play a role beyond just making money. Businesses should embrace the understanding that everything that a company does has an impact both internally and externally (communities, employees and customers), and the natural environment. This paper highlights the approach that led to a view that there is a contradiction between profitability, sustainability and community development, and we provide a further argument to the contrary. This argument is based on a comprehensive literature review of over three decades by various scholars linking corporate social performance and corporate financial performance. Driefontein Gold MineÆs approach is that of linking the community development, natural environmental and employee well-being initiatives and projects to the mineÆs business strategy. The paper further highlights the coordination and implementation mechanism of sustainability at the mine where the accountability lies with the head of the mine operations. A two pronged approach is employed where there is an internal dialogue on sustainability between the various departments coordinated by the sustainable development department and an external tri-sector partnership with local government, interested and affected parties and the mine. These approaches are closely linked to the contributions towards the mineÆs financial bottom line.

Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

Operational Grade Engineering (GE) is the early (pre-processing) discard of low-grade mineralised and/or barren rock to improve the ore grade and/or reduce deleterious elements within the run of mine ore to be processed. GE activities generally have an impact on primary and ancillary mining activities, equipment utilization and overall equipment productivity. By discarding material which would have reported as ore (in a non-GE mine plan) means that GE must increases the total ore and total rock mining rate requirements to sustain mill feed targets. One challenge of GE and the planning of GE activities is that there are several indirect parameters which impact operational productivity. Modelling these potential impacts and determining if they can be overcome with alternate mine sequences, equipment application or possibly a different equipment fleet altogether is a key question requiring investigation. Overcoming these potential productivity obstacles associated with a more complex operation by introducing new operational parameters and destinations for ore and possibly sub-grade blocks, requires a GE mine plan that is coupled with detailed equipment productivity metrics and a sound operational plan incorporating all GE infrastructure requirements. Several GE mine plans and equipment productivity models indicate that mining rates generally need to increase by approximately 5% to 15% to sustain mill targets and often negatively impact equipment unit productivity metrices through increased cycle times, additional queuing and destination changes. These changes to productivity metrics are however offset by step change increases in asset value. This paper details a methodology to develop GE mine plans that incorporate equipment modelling, flexible mine sequencing and equipment-based production scheduling. In addition, the paper will outline impacts of GE planning on equipment unit productivities through worked examples and models.

The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

"Phytostabilisation with tolerant plant species has been advocated as a cost-effective solution for sustainable cover of tailings from metal mines and bauxite refinery. The development of sustainable plant ecosystems on such wastes requires not only tolerant plant species compatible with local climatic conditions, but also the formation of stable and functional root zones through systematic processes to develop functional soil matrix and horizons (eg A-B-C). However, the process requirements for reconstructing functional root zones in tailings are poorly understood. Based on a review of current literature and industry experience in tailings revegetation, the present paper conceptualises three key phases in the process of root zone development in amended tailings: hydro-geochemical stabilisation resulting from the interactions among tailings characteristics, amendment measures and local climatic conditions the rehabilitation of soil biological capacity the establishment of ecological (carbon and nutrient) linkages between the rehabilitated root zones and the above ground plant communities.Key research is required on: the relationship between hydro-geochemical stability and mineralogy and geochemistry of tailings, in response to rehabilitation treatments under local climatic conditions the relationship between soil biological capacity and hydro-geochemical stability in the root zone the transition of soil microbial communities specific to exogenous organic matters into those required for mineralising litters of in situ plant communities.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Edraki, M and Mulligan, D R, 2012. The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Biological monitoring programs for environmental protection require techniques that will provide both early detection of possible adverse effects, and assessment of the ecological significance of these effects. Monitoring techniques must include responses sensitive to the impact, that can be subjected to rigorous statistical analysis and for which statistical power is high. Such issues in baseline research of 'what and how to measure?' and 'for how long?' have been the focus of a program being developed to monitor and assess effects of mining operations on the effectively pristine, freshwater ecosystems of the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in tropical northern Australia. Application of the BACIP design, utilising a form of temporal replication, to univariate data (single species) and multivariate (community) data is described. For new ventures in Australia (such as mining), monitoring programs should be designed to establish with high probability that an impact on the ecosystem no greater than a prescribed amount has gone undetected - as opposed to simply allowing development to continue as long as 'proof' of impact is not available. Such a precautionary approach represents a shifting of the 'burden of proof' and would require with the BACIP design, a minimum number of baseline years in order to achieve some desired level of statistical power in a test for impact. Power analyses conducted on two to five years (depending upon the technique) of baseline data from streams of the ARR indicate that the BACIP design would not impose developmental constraints on mining and that a policy of reversal of the burden of proof would provide the cornerstone required for managing such development in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.
