Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. Multi Torque Industries and Jadefoil have developed a safer, more efficient method of explosive protection, retention, placement, and constraint. In particular, this refers to advancements in airbag technology, where the system will offer an alternative to conventional gasbags and decking methods to provide a far more controlled and safer working environment. Airbags have provided operator control and reliability which has not until now been possible in this type of application. The benefits have been noted by current users and the advantages have provided an increase in productivity and significant savings in explosive waste. Obvious problems with gasbags lie in their instability in hot conditions where the danger is associated with gas canisters exploding with great force posing a significant risk to operators. Other problems associated with the decking systems currently on offer is the lack of versatility and operator control. The airbag systems give the operator full control to guarantee accurate placement, assured retention whilst boasting a quick operation of less than a few seconds for conventional void blocking, decking and plugging. One of the main advantages of the airbags is that the operator has full control over placement and retention force, therefore in wetter conditions where slippage can be a problem extra air can be added at the operatorÆs discretion to ensure a sufficient grip. Technical calculations coupled with experimental testing have demonstrated that an airbag will support the weight of a 30 m water column in an 89 mm hole at an initial bag pressure of 5 psig. Applications are increasingly growing whilst more customers embrace their use. Advancements such as the ability to deck in overhead holes, block voids in overhead holes at any depth, explosive retention in very wet conditions, longhole stabilisers to prevent hole closure and concertinaed liners reflect a dynamic potential for new technologies. All of these applications provide a decrease in explosive waste, an increase in operator safety, an increase in explosive protection, and an increase in productivity.

Modern computers and software provide powerful tools for the geologist to construct reliable models of geological resources, and the mining engineer to produce accurate and workable mine plans. Over the years many people have developed a phobia of computers, especially for geological analysis, modelling and mine planning. This phobia is often caused by a lack of knowledge, poor training or a bad experience. The adoption however of computers for geological modelling and mine planning is now becoming mainstream. With the correct training, a good understanding of input data, and detailed knowledge of the required results, the phobia can safely be overcome to provide mining operations with increased productivity.

The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. "Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

Managing water is a key aspect of mining, whether a site is in water surplus or water deficit. Water in tailings storage facilities (TSFs) needs to be managed carefully to maximise the density of the solids, maximise the re-use of available water and to minimise the risk of water overtopping the spillway in the event of heavy rainfall. Developing a water balance models is a standard method for monitoring the major flows of water around a site. However, models created by specialist consultants are often overly complex and are not suited to being used by process plant personnel after they have been handed over to the mine operator. Models typically offer information on water management at the time that they are created, but then ‘sit on the shelf’ and offer no further insight or value for operating mines. Advisian has developed a customised water balance model for a mine in Sub-Saharan Africa, which can be adapted to other locations, to assist in managing water at the site and in particular to predict the current and future water level and volume in the TSF under various rainfall scenarios. The model was developed using Microsoft Excel and requires no specialist skills to operate. Site personnel enter in daily production, water transfer and rainfall data and then view the output dashboards to observe the current water level and volume, decant rates, licensed water abstraction and water supply versus demand. The output dashboards were developed in close consultation with the client to ensure that all of the relevant key performance indicators were included, from the perspectives of all the key stakeholders. This modelling approach focusses on the needs of the people who will actually use the model to actively manage TSFs with the need to involve the model developer as part of ongoing operations eliminated. The amphibolite-facies metabasaltic rocks of the Mine Mafic Package at Plutonic Gold Mine, Marymia Inlier, Western Australia, contain an estimated total endowment of 12.2 Moz of Au, which includes 4.71 Moz of past production and 2.77 Moz of reserves and resources; the remainder comprises lower-grade inventory. Over 65?000 multi-element analyses of whole-rock core and face channel samples from the underground workings of the deposit have been collected by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) using a handheld Innov-X Omega pXRF unit. The analyses were performed on pulverised samples through paper bags, and were corrected using a pulverised, matrix-matched, reference standard. This method of data correction compares favourably with conventional XRF analyses performed on the same samples.A preliminary study based on pXRF analyses from a small number of drill holes found that a geochemical stratigraphy was evident in the pXRF data, and that this stratigraphy strongly controlled the location of Au mineralisation. The present study incorporates a much larger pXRF data set that samples a greater volume of diamond drill core and face channel samples and presents the data in a three-dimensional (3D) framework.This data set allows an investigation of the mineralogy of Au mineralisation with varying geochemical associations across the deposit. Historically, there has been a strong relationship identified between As and Au, which has caused issues with metallurgical performance, rendering some areas of the deposit only marginally economic. Utilising seamless data integration of the pXRF data set allows for recognition of the different styles of Au mineralisation using elemental concentrations and ratios from the multi-element analyses (Au:As, Au:As:Cu, As:Cu vs. K:V), and to visualise the distribution of these different mineralogical associations in 3D. The results of the 3D modelling and geochemical characterisation of the different styles of Au mineralisation are currently the focus of an extensive metallurgical testing program, the preliminary results of which are presented here.

The Australian mining industry can expect to be working internationally competitive high quality coal mines during the twenty-first century. Cost efficient mining methods such as high productivity longwall units with heavy reliance on remote control will be standard and worked by well paid and intensively trained operators. Major changes in mine ventilation engineering can be expected in the use of computers and mine telemetry, the understanding of the mine environment and the frequency of mine disasters, the utilization of mine air contaminants for profitable purposes and the provision of a pleasant and comfortable work environment. New approaches to mine ventilation such as air recirculation will have been considered. There will be an increased need for highly trained ventilation engineers. With the present pace of technological change, quite revolutionary new approaches to mining and ventilation can be expected by the end of the twenty-first century.

The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

This short paper outlines the authorÆs views regarding the progress we have made as an industry in managing mining assets over the past 500 years. It represents a personal view û but one founded in fact-based observations of mining companies and of the mining industry in general. There is no doubt that AgricolaÆs views as expressed in De Re Metallica (1556) were visionary. There is also little doubt regarding another issue û that whilst a great deal has been learnt about the management of mines since AgricolaÆs time, observations suggest that best practice management is the exception rather than the rule across our industry. Although insights regarding the successful management of mines have become apparent, we still witness unnecessary errors in our industry that lead to the loss of shareholdersÆ funds. By highlighting some aspects of current best practice, particularly in the arena of operations management, it is hoped that this short paper contributes a small step along the next 500-year-long learning curve. The paper concludes with a brief description of the progress and impact of continuous improvement initiatives at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Located in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields, KCGM is currently AustraliaÆs largest gold mine producing over 800 000 ounces of gold per annum. Improvement initiatives at KCGM look set to deliver some $100 million in value over life-of-mine.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

The primary object of the drive is to provide sites for gaining information regarding the behaviour of the ore-bodies well beyond the limits of the present exposures.Due to thermal conditions, the major portion of the work was done on a six-hour shift basis, in contrast to the normal one of seven hours, with a five-day week.

In 1939 Dr Neil George gave us the statement: Safety is a state of mind by which men are constantly made aware of the possibility of injury at all times. Is this statement still relevant? Have we been able to capture the essence of Dr GeorgeÆs statement in our current safety management systems and have we been able to capture the lessons from the past? Drawing upon 25 years of experience in the mining industry we explore what was done in the past, how this related to Dr GeorgeÆs statement and how the industry has progressed to the current safety management systems. We review the safety management system used by Roche Mining and demonstrate how it has improved safety outcomes for Roche. We then look to the future û are there new challenges? Are the current management systems equipped to cater for these new challenges and deliver continued improvement in safety outcomes? There will always be a desire to improve the industryÆs safety outcomes and so how are future generations going to achieve the improvement in safety outcomes?

Studies by Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd (TIP) have indicated that underground quarrying of backfill may be a cost competitive option for providing backfill for specialised situations in underground mining. Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authorsÆ personal observations and experience.

The energy supply in the 21st century is still secured by coal. According to estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA), coal will have the same importance as oil for the world-wide supply of energy until 2030. Coal is also an important element of EU policy, its future use is closely linked to effectively addressing the environmental challenges it poses. Hard and brown coal represent approximately 80 per cent of European Union (EU) reserves of fossil fuels and coal utilisation can co-exist with the development of power generation based on renewables. Europe is the world's third largest consumer of coal behind China and the United States.The Czech Republic is poor in energy resources except for coal. Brown coal is relatively abundant (mineable reserves estimated at 1800 Mt, output 48 Mt/a) and significant quantities of hard coal (mineable reserves 900 Mt, 13 Mt/a), much of it suitable for coke production, are also present.Severoceske Doly (SD Company), the biggest Czech coal mining company (22 Mt/a, 48.6 per cent Czech market share) and one of the biggest in Europe, reinforces despite the last deep crisis in the Czech and European economies its long-standing stable and strong market and financial position. From 2009, the SD Company co-owns, with partners, a brown-coal mining company MIBRAG (21 Mt/a). SD Company invests in large mining equipment (eg new giant spreaders and bucket-wheel excavators, extension of overland belt conveyors), rebuilds and upgrades mining and processing installations, auxiliary and other machinery. We should see the investment we make today in tomorrow's mining and reclamation as an opportunity and not as a burden. They enable to make our position more resistant in the longer term. Projects focused on the environment and operational safety went hand in hand with these efforts.R&D activities relate to technical innovations, improvements of mining equipment, research and evaluation of conditions for extracting coal seam and/or overburden and mitigation of environmental impacts, utilisation of coal in new products. The company spends considerable amounts on reclaiming affected land and creating a new post-mining landscape.Our dialogue with influential stakeholders in the region where we operate contributes to the long-term improvement in the quality of life of local residents. Such dialogue with communities in the last ten years has been instrumental for confidence building. SD Company helps to develop many projects of towns and villages in its vicinity. The stable and transparent relations with our neighbours are in accordance with our basic principles of corporate social responsibility.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. A trend towards mining more complex and economically marginal orebodies, often combined with increasingly tight product specifications, increases the number of variables which need to be considered in production scheduling. Linear programming incorporating integer constraints can be used to create production schedules which are practical as well as mathematically optimum. Factors which can be taken into account include variability in product stockpiles, targets for head or product grades, production of different material types, production from different areas, production targets for loaders, and dependencies between mining blocks. For each schedule an appropriate objective for optimisation must be chosen. Examples of objectives are: to minimise or maximise grade variation; to minimise waste movement; and to minimise movement by front end loaders. A staged approach to the implementation of computer systems based on linear programming optimisation is Proposed.

The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining.
