This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

Portland cement is the chief binding ingredient in mine backfill. In the presence of water, the chemical compounds within portland cement hydrate causing hardening and strength gain. During hydration, heat is generated. In certain cases, hydration heat may be produced significantly faster than it can be dissipated, which can create high temperatures in the underground environment. This paper presents the results of a series of investigations aimed at quantifying the heat generated by cemented backfill during hydration. Scaled stope models, instrumented with thermistors, were used in the investigation. Heat transfer to the hanging wall, orebody, footwall and cross-cut and production drifts was assessed during the backfill curing process and relationships between cement content, cure time, and heat generation were developed. The results of this work will assist mine operators in predicting the heat generated by cemented backfill and provide the necessary information to implement effective engineering control of heat in the underground environment.

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. H. E. McKinstryl visited the mine and recognised that the ore occurred primarily on the flatly dipping sections of the vein, as distinct from the steeply dippingsections, in a wide shear zone with reverse movement. Many of the flatly dipping fractures were seen to exhibit tension phenomena and to link one shear plane to the next below on the footwall side. Preliminary work being undertaken on the optimisation of decision strategies for an open-pit metalliferous deposit is presented. The Optimal Control method has been selected rather than the easier to implement Dynamic Programming method of optimisation since a fundamental criteria of Dynamic Programming is violated. Essentially a system of state equations and decision variables is developed for the operation under consideration.

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

Engineering education has become a matter of national concern, at last, so I would like to talk about the links between the mining industry, the universities and technological developments. The Australasian mining industry and the mining schools have collaborated closely since the first school was established in 1871 and during those years there were a series of remarkable technological developments. For example:In the late 1880s George AndersoIl Richard developed chloride leaching of gold at Mt Morgan. This made a large difference to the wealth of Mt Morgan Mining Ltd.In the mid 1890s Robert Sticht demonstrated that pyrite smelting was an economically feasible process at Mt Lyell and the wealth which came to Mt Lyell Mining Co from his outstanding work made it one of the great companies in the country.During the first 15 years of this century flotation was developed at Broken Hill and it has proved to be one of the great technological inventions of this century.In the 1920s G K Williams started his outstanding work on lead smelting and refining at Port Pirie, this was work which ultimately re-wrote the text book on lead metallurgy and established Port Pirie as the mecca for lead metallurgists.In the 1920s also Frank Stillwell, later joined by Austin Edwards, established the new science of mineragraphy at the University of Melbourne. They were both great geologists, both were superb scientists and oddly enough both were outstanding athletes.In the 1930s Dr Ian Wark, a man in the front rank of Australian scientists of any period, started his outstanding work on flotation, work which resulted in a text book which remains a leader in its field today.In the 1930s also Arnold Black at Broken Hill South Ltd picked up the work which had been done at Mt Lyell many years previously and eventually wrote the papers on hydraulic fill which demonstrated that he led the world in fill technology. What a remarkable story of achievement it was, it laid the groundwork for the great industry we have today. It was possible because the industry was well supported by outstanding university schools and I would like to talk about some of these.

The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

The paper describes a simulating method.for ground water contamination originating from industrial and mining activrty. The finite difference model simulates heat, mass and solute transport. The applied stochastical method for dispersion provides more accurate solution of mass transport modelling. This method gives a more realistic approach of chemical processes in an aquifer depending on temperature.

For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

Man has always been and will always be part of his environment, in ,a good, bad or indifferent manner. Until quite recently, this environment has been the atmospheric boundary layer above the land masses, and to a limited extent the air-sea interface of the oceans. Since the days when he lived in caves, he has built up a wealth of observations on these two environments,-with ever-increasing scientific precision which unfortunately until quite recently was completely insufficient for modern capabilities of data analysis. Consequently, in a sense, he has left in his wake thousands of years of missed, opportunities for making exact observations and increasing his understanding. The data of the past are lost and he has to be satisfied with what he can assemble from now on when his environ- ment, largely as a result of his actions, is exhibiting more and more rapid variations in time; in other words, time series of observations of phenomena are required, the length of which is critical for most purposes of analysis.

Benchmark practices in the mining industry include the establishment of Quality Programs — Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) — to monitor the correct execution of sampling protocols and control each stage of the ‘Sample Cycle’: Sample Collection, Preparation (comminution) and Analysis. QAQC reports commonly include statistical-numerical results that quantify performance of QAQC controls (field duplicates, preparation duplicates, blanks, standards etc). Graphics such as scatter plots, QQ plots, histograms and cumulative frequencies are used to represent the results. Statistical values including relative difference, absolute difference, relative variance, averages, T-test, and Zscores are used to quantitatively express the relationship between duplicate pairs ... but is an effective quality program just a statistical exercise? This paper aims to highlight the concept of ‘Quality Management’ (QM) as the precursor of continuous monitoring (ideally in real time) of QAQC results on Exploration, Production, Processing and Port samples, determined by trend analysis performed on a time and/or grades basis. Currently, there is a paradigm in the process of quality assurance that if individual data points fall within a predetermined acceptance limit then they are ‘acceptable’ and therefore suitable for informing operational and investment decisions. However, what is stated with respect to QM is that sometimes results found within the acceptance limits can indeed be internally biased, or show material deviations over a period of time, thereby impacting reconciliation results and/or potentially creating discrepancies with the final buyers. QM refers to the proactive detection of these ‘anomalous tendencies’, the approach and communication with the source of the information, the understanding of the reasons that cause the deficiencies, and the generation of agreed action plans to remediate the situation and ensure the consistency of results, in other words: continuous improvement on proactive manners.

The idea behind Grade Engineering is to exploit the natural heterogeneity of an orebody (spatial, temporal) in order to divert low-value waste out of the mining value chain. Essentially, this involves rejecting material at relatively coarse particle sizes (10 mm to 200 mm). However, lack of knowledge about the inherent particle grade distributions in these coarse particle size ranges limits the opportunities for optimisation. Particle grade distributions are essential for quantifying and modelling gangue liberation and yield curves. These curves can then be used to predict the mass and value flows that will go towards the accept and the reject streams. Particle grade distribution information for particles coarser than 10 mm can be collected based on chemical assays of sufficient number of individual particles. However, for smaller particles (1 mm to 9 mm), a significantly larger number of particles is required for assays. Moreover, in some cases, the mass of individual particles is smaller than the minimum mass required for chemical assaying. Also, other quantification techniques such as automated mineralogy, eg Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), require extended measurement times to analyse statistically representative numbers of particles at these size ranges. This work investigates the use of 3D X-ray microtomography to fill this quantification gap at these size ranges (1 mm to 9 mm). In-house image processing algorithms are used to estimate the mineral/metal content in each particle. Particle grade distributions, as well as density distributions, are thus produced without a minimum mass requirement and with each scan providing information about tens to hundreds of particles at a time. Mineralogical data from MLA analysis, of finer size ranges, is used to inform X-ray microtomography, so a simpler 3D mineral map can be obtained using the image intensity. Chemical assay information of the scanned samples is used to validate and correct the mineral phase segmentation.

The poor flotation response of many coals has in the past been attributed to such factors as differences in rank, differences in degree of oxidation, differences in petrographic composition, or slime coatings. The present work shows that while all these factors undoubtedly influence flotation, the size distribution of the feed may override these. Evidence is presented which shows how this factor can lead to substantial losses of coarse coal (>250 µm)from a coal which would normally be considered amenable to flotation. Reasons for this loss of flotation response are suggested together with means of overcoming the problem.

Accident prevention in industry is a task as important to the ultimate result of an undertaking as efficient machines, good tools or trained operatives. In fact, like many qther phases of industry today, "Accident Prevention" or "Safety Organisation" has developed in this century, to a degree that is now acknowledged as an integral part of industrial thought and planning. This has not always been the case, as the following snap-shot picture of the past illustrates.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company recently celebrated at Whyalla the Jubilee of the opening of the Iron Knob Tramway. On that occasion a dinner was tendered to the pioneers, and in talking to the Writer of the early days one of the old gentlemen present could not refrain from recounting some of the accidents he had seen or experienced.Several such incidents were recounted at length, after each, the old fellow would say, "An' there weren't no safety officers or compensation in them days".The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited was a pioneer of safety in Australian industry and considerable success has followed its activity in this connection; the accident rate of the steel industry now compares satisfactorily with that of any other industrial undertaking. A measure of 'the success of the safety organisation, is, that in recent years, despite extensive construction programmes at various centres, and despite a heavy labour turnover, a decreasing accident rate has been maintained. This success, in the Writer's opinion, arises from the fact that by its early attention to plant protection, the introduction of safety standards and further through the interest and energy of departmental superintendents and foremen, the...

An experimental mining project has been carried out in the Collie Basin to demonstrate the safe operation of total extraction mining techniques in the underground mines of the basin. To achieve this, it was necessary to design and install a means of controlling or removing groundwater so that goafing of the overlying strata could be safely achieved as part of the mining operation. The site chosen for the experiment was a triangular panel adjacent to Western No 6 (WD6) underground mine, which includes the 3 to 4 m thick Wyvern Seam beneath 130 to 180 m of overburden. The test area abuts a major fault on the downdip side. The overburden and underburden sequences include several horizons of permeable sandstones which form major aquifers. Water problems have long been recognized in all underground mines in the Collie Basin, and have previously prevented the successful application of total extraction mining. Following extensive hydrological investigations, dewatering and depressurization systems were designed to dewater the immediate roof aquifers and to depressurize aquifers higher in the sequence and in the floor. This would enable stable roof conditions to develop and controlled goafing to be achieved. The roof dewatering/depressurization procedure involved a combination of in-mine vertical roof drainage holes and conventional dewatering bores constructed from the ground surface above the mining trial area. The dewatering system was installed and operated for 29 months before the commencement of mining. Mining was eventually successfully completed in two trial panels using a retreat Wongawilli extraction system using bridge conveyors and continuous miners. Water inflow into the mine workings was channelled to a constructed sump area at the lowermost corner of the panel and pumped to the surface via vertical sump bores. The dewatering and depressurization measures adopted were successful in permitting the first controlled and systematic total extraction recovery of coal from the Collie Basin. This trial mining exercise demonstrated the potential for increasing substantially the recovery of coal from the Collie Basin, where previously recovery rates of around 30 percent from underground mining were commonplace, using only bord and pillar methods.

The blast furnace is a counter current reactor. The counter current principle of the furnace makes it very efficient in transferring the heat and mass required to drive the reduction reactions inside the furnace. However, this does impose a stringent requirement on the permeability of burden material in the furnace. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous feeds used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, often accounting for ten to 20 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. As the lump ore descends through the blast furnace, it is dried, heated and reduced by the ascending hot reducing gas. To ensure good furnace permeability, generation of fines from burden materials including lump ore due to mechanical, thermal and chemical processes needs to be minimised. Unlike sinter and pellets, lump ore is subject to thermal degradation. To assess this behaviour of lump, the ISO decrepitation test (ISO 8371, 2007) is often conducted, and the result is calculated as a decrepitation index (DI). However, the DI values obtained from the existing ISO decrepitation test vary considerably between test portions and between laboratories, which makes meaningful comparison very difficult. In order to identify the sources responsible for the unacceptable repeatability, the effect of various testing conditions, such as particle size, heating rate, sample preparation and loading method, on the mean DI value was studied. Automation in underground mining enhances safety and leads to economic efficiency. In the past many efforts have been made on the automation of longwall shearer operation. With respect to the ultimate goal of automation, ie self controlled operation, coal bed boundary detection is one of the key problems. For longwall human labor is necessary in order to detect the exact position of the coal seam to be excavated. The authors present a sensor concept based on infrared technology and pattern recognition which will solve this problem. The very harsh underground conditions set high demands on the implemented sensors. The combination of infrared sensors and powerful processing algorithms is part of the innovative concept for automation of the new Eickhoff Bergbautechnik GmbH SL 750 shearer loader. The multi-sensor automation system EiControlPlus which is designed for the complete detection of the machine environment fills in the gap in the coal-excavation automation by building a recognition system that turns the shearer loader into an 'intelligent machine' which is capable of detecting the correct position of the seam to be excavated and thus enables human-free coal mining.

Conventional processing of poly-metallic gold containing flotation concentrates are challenging for a number of reasons. One reason is that substantial copper and zinc in the cyanide leach solution compete with gold and silver for carbon adsorption sites. In this study, metal-cyanide adsorption kinetics and equilibrium are measured on three samples of coconut derived activated carbon and one sample of synthetic carbon. Loading selectivity was confirmed to be in the order gold>silver>copper>zinc for all carbon samples.
