This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

The disposal of dewatered coalmine tailings and coarse reject within spoil piles is gaining popularity as a means of eliminating separate surface tailings storage facilities or dams. The contrasting characteristics of coalmine spoil, coarse reject and tailings are somewhat complimentary, making the co-disposal of dewatered tailings within spoil piles geotechnically feasible and environmentally attractive. However, the impacts of mixing plant rejects within spoil piles are not well understood; in particular, the effects of water draining from the mixed plant rejects on the moisture content of the surrounding spoil. Changes in moisture content can cause additional collapse and degradation settlements of the spoil pile. A series of laboratory tests has been undertaken on mixtures of dewatered coalmine tailings, coarse reject and spoil. The results of these tests have been incorporated into a spreadsheet-based settlement prediction tool to investigate the effects of incorporating mixed plant rejects on total spoil pile settlements. The development and distribution of gold placers in Otago û Southland is related primarily to the evolution and architecture of three distinctly different drainage networks that developed during and since Gondwana breakup: +        Late-Gondwana û Pre-marine; +        Middle Tertiary Post-marine; and +        Modern. Late Gondwana û Pre-marine drainage was dominantly recti-linear and controlled by normal faults and sedimentary basins formed before or during Gondwana breakup. Placers formed dominantly in 2nd order transverse drainages with primary sources in their catchments. This drainage network was progressively destroyed by inundation and burial by marine strata during Late Cretaceous û Middle Tertiary marine transgression that ultimately covered most of New Zealand. Middle Tertiary Post-marine drainage evolved on and incised the newly emergent low-relief landscape during regional marine regression driven by development of the present plate boundary through South Island. Most of Central Otago was drained into Southland and to the southern coast via a large braided river system with an extensive network of tributaries in its Central Otago reach. East Otago was drained by several smaller systems. Placers formed dominantly in proximal and medial reaches of 1st and 2nd order drainages with primary or pre-existing placers in their catchments. This drainage network was destroyed by inundation and burial of the Central Otago reach of the major system by lacustrine strata following tectonic damning of its middle reach by range uplift and development of a lake complex that covered >5000km2 of Central Otago. The Modern drainage network evolved from the Middle Tertiary network through complex response, firstly to uplift of NW-trending and NE-trending ranges throughout the region since the Late Miocene, and secondly to the effects of major Pleistocene glacial advances in West Otago. Placers formed in alluvial fans at range margins, proximal and medial pre-glacial fluvial systems and glacial outwash sequences. Evolution of each of these drainage networks has been accompanied by widespread sedimentary recycling of alluvial gold from older to younger placers, augmented locally by input of first-cycle gold derived from erosion of primary sources in the repeatedly exhumed basement rocks.

Asian steel mills are demanding iron ore with specific chemical, mineralogical, metallurgical and environmental properties to warrant that the ore is of the greatest quality. As a result, a toolkit of analytical techniques becomes important. Hyperspectral analyses of iron ore cores and chips using a HyLogging™ system are now routinely undertaken by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in Western Australia for banded iron formation-hosted iron ores and channel iron deposits to better characterise their iron ores. Objective information can now be expanded by adding new sensors. The current HyLogging™ system provides point analysis reflectance spectra and a red–green–blue high-resolution image, while recent developments, such as hyperspectral imaging using the Corescan system, now provide full spectral image and surface topography. The addition of Raman spectroscopy provides the ability to detect and quantify quartz and magnetite (or maghemite) and cross validate hyperspectral information on hematite and goethite and aluminium substitution in the iron oxides. Micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping also adds chemical information appropriate for cross validation with the aforementioned methods. The Sto Tomas II orebody of Philex Mining Corporation is a porphyry copper deposit located at Padcal, Tuba, Benguet, Philippines. It was mined through open pit method for the first two years starting 1958 and subsequently through underground method using the Block Cave System. The slusher type of draw was employed at the upper levels of the orebody from mid-year of 1959 up to 1994 and then shifted to LHD as the ore became more competent at the lower levels. Application of rock mechanics played a vital role during the conceptualisation of the LHD method of draw, the first of its kind in the Philippines. Rock mechanics is a combined responsibility of the geology and the mine engineering staffs, with the geology providing the vital information to the mine engineering to include in the mine planning the following:the general geology of the orebody; the ground characterisation through rockmass classification; determination of the cavability of the ore column (this includes our experience on airblasts which occurred during the early stage of our last slusher blocks); undercutting sequence; fragmentation of the rockmass in the ore column; drawzone spacing; proper draw control procedure; lay-out of openings; and the design of ground supports based on the rockmass condition. For the proper interpretation of the rockmass that would cater to the diverse mining situations, Philex adopted the modified geomechanics rockmass classification (Mining Rockmass Rating, MRMR) as this system is recognised and used by most of the block cave mine worldwide. This paper aims to discuss and present the role of rock mechanics in the analysis and determination of geomechanical issues encountered in Philex mechanised block cave operation.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The æslope stability radarÆ (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR can remotely scan a rock slope to continuously measure any movement of the face. The system can detect and alert users of wall movements with submillimetre precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many mines in Australia, Indonesia, Africa, Chile and the United States. Greater than 100 rock falls and waste dump failures (from several tonnes to millions of tonnes) have been monitored, and on every occasion precursor æwarningÆ movements were recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper presents recent case studies of how the SSR technology has provided safety and productivity benefits to large open cut metalliferous mines.

It has been said on many occasions that æthe future of the mining industry of Australia, and indeed the world, lies in the hands of the studentsÆ. As a student, this can be a daunting, yet very exciting, statement. If nothing else, it is a direct challenge to the student body of the mining industry to take responsibility for its direction æafter 2000Æ. However, for the students to embrace this challenge, some responsibility must be borne by the universities and the industry itself to provide some direction and encouragement. Perhaps, therefore, the real challenge is to find the right balance between students, industry and education to best prepare the students for a career in the mining industry. The future industry will demand students who are capable and willing to adapt to change and technology and able to exert the vision and leadership required to ensure the mining industry continues to thrive well into the next century.

In the ten years since the University of NSW proposed a pillar design methodology for bord and pillar operations, the Australian coal mining industry has changed substantially. What was primarily a bord and pillar design approach is now being applied to chain pillar design in longwall mines where the requirements are substantially different. The dimensions of chain pillars can impact on tailgate conditions (roof, rib and floor), seal performance, and surface subsidence. The status of chain pillar design practice in Australia is reviewed, with a focus on defining pillar strength, chain pillar loading, and assessing the performance of the roof/pillar/system. A new pillar strength equation is proposed for Australian coal that applies for all width/height ratios. An alternative analysis of probability of failure of chain pillars is presented.

The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognized within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralization is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralization yield a wide range of homogenization temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250-300¦C and 350-400¦C respectively. S30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralization range from -0.1 to -0.4%o. The mineralization at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

The structural models developed by exploration and mining geologists are most commonly concerned with the ‘main structures’ or key constituents that pertain to the associated mineralisation. To this end, it is recognised that the geological and exploration models, which are developed, are essentially ‘fit for task’ and the scale-related variances are not always realised at an early stage. In fact, in many cases anomalous intercepts along different trends and of variable apparent continuity have often been neglected as ‘back scatter’ and not important. Recognition of the importance of subordinate structures as mineralising hosts suggests that additional opportunities exist outside the primary and main structures. History shows that opportunities are often not realised where gold is hosted in orientations not parallel to the predominant trend of the schistosity, main fault or shear zone.Another reason for the importance of subordinate structures can be understood from their roles in a percolation network. Subordinate structures can access the large fluid fluxes provided by backbone elements, but, as dangling elements, they provide greater opportunities for gold precipitation mechanisms and hence may constitute essential parts of the resource. Therefore, the role, understanding and consideration of the smaller-scale and orthogonal structures should be considered during all facets of exploration, resource development, delineation and mining.

Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. A marked similarity existed between at least 7 of the 10 type seam sequences formed. The configurations of the vitrite-plus-clarite contents of the plies of 95 per cent of the seams could be formed from different arrangements of 3 basic sequences: (i) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-rich and an upper vitrite-poor ply; (ii) a two-ply sequence with a lower vitrite-poor and an upper vitrite-rich ply; and (iii) a four-ply sequence of 3 plies with vitrite-plus- clarite decreasing upwards, terminating in a vitrite- rich ply. The third basic sequence was very similar to a succession described for some British Carboniferous coals. Eighty per cent of the Australian Permian coal seams studied began with the first (i) basic type of sequence and are interpreted as originating in peat- forming areas which became progressively drier. More than half the seams were formed in an area with a stable depositional surface level which was subject to oscillations of small amplitude.. Many (30%) were formed in an area with a steadily rising depositional surface level.

The efficiency of water sprays in suppressing airborne colliery dust depends on many variable factors. A survey of previous work in this field shows that swirl spray nozzles are the best dust suppressors.Investigations carried out in an experimental dust chamber show that, in spite of limitations to the application of water sprays in underground use, promising dust suppression efficiencies in mechanised mining can be obtained with swirl spray nozzles.INTRODUCTIONA dust hazard has always been associated with coal mining, and the recent growth of mechanisation has resulted in a greater production of fine coal and dust, thus increasing the hazard. A better knowledge and appreciation of the medical aspects and dust explosion factors has led to practices reducing the seriousness of the problem. However, the dust hazard still exists and its control is basically an engineering problem.Dust, as with any atmospheric pollution, may be removed from the, mine by ventilation, which is an indirect method of control. Direct methods, in which the dust is prevented from being produced and from becoming airborne, should be employed where possible. Of these direct methods the most significant is the use of water sprays.THE DUST HAZARDAn appreciation of the physical nature of the more important dust hazards is necessary before considering the removal of the hazard. The main hazards associated with colliery dusts are the health hazard and the explosion hazard. "Dust" comprises solid particles of size minus 20 mesh Tyler (833 microns).

High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology is a novel process that could potentially be the step-change needed in ore processability in the mining industry. The propensity of high voltage pulses towards mineral-enriched ore particles during treatment makes this technology selective and has the potential to enable ore pre-concentration by size separation. In this study, the potential for pre-concentration of a low grade copper-gold ore sample subjected to HVP pretreatment is investigated and compared to that achievable after mechanical breakage in JKMRC’s rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). The data show that a better pre-concentration result can be achieved after HVP processing than conventional breakage. The gold pre-concentration potential is much better than that observed for copper. 4D HVP pre-concentration characteristic curves were produced to assess the metallurgical performance possible as a function of energy input. The case study shows that when targeting a nominal metal recovery of 90 per cent for gold, the HVP pre-concentration technique can split the low grade ore (0.9 ppm gold and 0.28 per cent copper in the feed size 26.5-37.5 mm) into two components – a low grade oversize material (0.3 ppm gold and 0.15 per cent copper) and a high grade undersize material (1.0 ppm gold and 0.3 per cent copper). The mass split to the low grade is 23 per cent. Under this mass split scenario, gold recovery to screen undersize is 90 per cent and copper recovery is 85 per cent. The HVP treatment of this feed size requires a specific energy (spark) of 2.8 kWh/t.There is further research that would be required before industrial uptake of the HVP pre-concentration technology would be possible. In recent technical investigations that were triggered from ore for rail shortfalls at Yandi, BHP Iron ore has identified a gap in resource knowledge relating to geo-metallurgical characteristics that predict materials handling performance and throughput. Within these investigations BHP has learnt that this lack of resource knowledge has translated to a lack of predictability associated with mine planning inputs which has resulted in poor compliance to plan and deviation management practices. A business value chain was developed in an attempt to identify the best possible solution to unlock this resource knowledge in the short, medium and long term planning horizons. A fast fail approach was taken with the implementation of hyperspectral blasthole analysis, which was chosen to deliver the best possible value driver for the asset. This report will detail the Yandi journey in expanding the hyperspectral and geo-metallurgical value chain, unlocking resource knowledge along the way. CITATION: Gilroy, P, 2018. Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

The Coal Resources Survey commenced in 1974 as a search for Huntly Power Station coal, but soon developed into the most detailed regional coal search programme to be instituted in New Zealand. The program was initially conceived as geological in nature, but later included geotechnical, geohydrological, mining assessment, coal use, and environmental considerations in its investigations. The programme never undertook development work but has provided Government and the private sector with a sound basis for identifying development options. The discovery of large-scale coal resources in the Mokau, Waikato, and Taranaki regions and the lignite resources of Otago and Southland are a measure of the Survey's success. The directive by Government to phase out the NZCRS to a large extent coincides with the completion stage of the program. With most of the detailed regional study finished, it now remains to collate the data and publish summary reports at Coalfield and Coal Region level, in order to maximise the use and value of the data collected over the years.

Beach sands on the Morobe coast of New Guinea contain significant amounts of chromite. This chromite, together with the more abundant associated minerals such as olivine, enstatite, tremolite, antigorite and feldspar has been de- rived from rocks of the Papuan Ultramafic Belt and transported to the beaches by three rivers, the Paiawa, the Saia and the Sesimbai. Of the hundreds of samples taken, 26 have been analysed mineralogically and chemically in some detail. On this basis, five groups of samples, four on- shore and one offshore, representing character- istic mineral assemblages, have been recognized. The chromite grains themselves have been exam- ined to determine variations in amount and in the Cr/Fe ratio, since this is of economic importance. Much of the chromite fails to reach a high Cr/Fe ratio as a result of magnetite rims around chromite grains. The precious metal content of the sands is negligible.

Dr Wark said: I have not come to Broken Hill to tell you how to conduct flotation operations; indeed, during my short stay here I have already learned much concerning the process, of the many difficulties which have been overcome, and of those still awaiting solution. My purpose tonight is rather different. All who have been concerned with the operation of the flotation process must have wondered, like myself, why the process is possible at all. In particular, why can minerals which are heavier than water be made to l10at to its surface; why do certain minerals float while others do not; and what are the functions of the added chemicals?I have been asked to describe tonight some of the ways which have been adopted in the Melbourne University laboratory in an endeavour to find answers to these. questions. Knowing that you are just as interested in them as we are and, furthermore, appreciating that were it not for the co-operation of the Broken Hill companies our researches would not have been possible, I regard it as a high privilege that I should have been invited to tell you of our work. Before doing so, I would like to tell you the reasons why the work was started and for whom it has been carried out. Soon after the flotation process had been successfully exploited on a commercial scale a number of investigators sought to determine the theoretical basis upon which it rests, and our knowledge of the function of the added chemicals has been considerably broadened by the published accounts of many workers, particularly in recent years of those working in American universities.The Australian metallurgist played, as you know, a part second to none in the early development of the process, and Australia's mining fields had already reaped such rich rewards from it that, late in 1929, it was felt by some of the leaders of the industry that we should take a larger part in the efforts being made to extend the knowledge of the principles upon which the process is based.Accordingly, several companies - the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, The Zinc Corporation, the Electrolytic Zinc and the Mount Lyell Companies - established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation.Subsequently another British company, the Burma Corporation Ltd, expressed a desire to co-operate.
