"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. Gold mineralization like other low concentration high value commodities has gained the notoriety of being difficult to sample. This adversely affects the confidence that can be placed in resource estimates and ore reserves. As an example, it is not uncommon to find differences of the order of 30% between duplicates of a single sample sent to two different commercial laborartories. Two halves of drill core generally show marked differences in grade. Again differences of 50% are not uncommon in halved core. In the context of this type of "error" within the base data used for the resource estimate, many of the subtleties of computation methods and expert judgement of resource categories, are almost a case of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. Managers, financiers and consultants must question the quality of the base data upon which resource estimates are made. They must insist that standard and duplicate samples are used to measure the accuracy and precision of commercial analytical laboratories, that sampling practices have been checked for possible bias and give tolerable repeatability. Further they must ensure there can be a realistic confidence in the estimates by correctly using these measures of data quality to quantify risk.

Geological modelling provides a means of spatially representing the three dimensional distribution of geological information to downstream stakeholders. The geologist completing the modelling work intimately understands the varying degrees of confidence, assumptions and extrapolation required to honour the data. Geological models are often taken and used by stakeholders without fully understanding this modelling process. This can lead to confusion amongst stakeholders when the geological model shows variable reconciliation. A method for visually communicating the confidence of the spatial distribution of geological models has been created by the Rio Tinto Iron Ore structural geology group for use primarily in geotechnical engineering investigations. A numeric confidence rating is assigned to each geological data point used in the creation of a geological surface. This is based on data type, collection method and reliability to indicate potential error in distance from its modelled location. In regions of sparse data, confidence ratings are inserted based upon the geologistÆs experience and knowledge of the geology, whereas mapped geological contacts or drill hole intersections are assigned a higher confidence rating. A regular grid of points is registered to the geological surface and each of these grid points is assigned a confidence rating using an inverse distance weighting using a nearest neighbour approach. The resulting grid is colour coded according to the confidence rating to provide a visual representation of the variable confidence of the geological surface in three dimensions. Subjectivity and bias from the geologist is minimised by critically analysing the input geological data and then applying this methodology to represent the confidence in the spatial characteristics of geological models. Understanding of this confidence enables mining professionals to make informed decisions and identify areas that require further geological investigative work. Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

Gaining confidence in interpreting rock and strata properties of the coalmine roof is necessary for design, maintenance, modelling and optimisation of roadways supports. One of the key causes of roadway instabilities experienced in underground coalmines is an extreme variable nature (thickness, competence, discontinuities etc) of the coalmine roof. Normally, the thickness and strength of the roof are characterised with the geotechnical and geological data gathered from exploration boreholes, which are drilled often at considerable distances apart. This limited data cannot capture localised geological variations in the coalmine roof. With this background, this paper explores feasibility of using measurement while drilling concept to perform geotechnical characterisation of the coalmine roof. The parameters, for example, penetration rate, rotary speed, torque, sound, vibration, obtained during the drilling process can provide valuable insights into geotechnical properties. The paper describes the progress of the experimental work conducted at the laboratory on synthesized concrete samples representing various rock strata using a field-scale drilling machine. The samples with and without interfaces have been tested to replicate various underground roof strata. The signals returned from the drill machine, as the drill bit passes through the layers, have been analysed and interpreted to characterise whether the drill response data can differentiate various strengths associated with the rock layers. The initial laboratory results are promising as they show distinct responses of the various sample blocks in a controlled environment. The drilling data can differentiate the synthesized rock samples and detect ‘signatures’ of the roof strength variability and delineation of lithological interfaces (transitions). The weight and torque on the bit vary and show dependency on the strength of the blocks.

Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher Process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher Process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

Whilst decisions to commit projects have traditionally been heavily influenced by hurdle rates for d.c.f. analysis, it is suggested that evaluation of competitors' costs may be a desirable additional tool.The MICAS system developed over the past four years is described. This computer system uses standard costs modified by District and Mine factors to allow estimation of individual mine costs. The data base contains more than 15,000 items of data and more than 6000 costs are calculated.Recent applications include use for competitive analysis, predictive analysis, statistical analysis, and comparative assessments with scopes ranging from a few mines to the whole Australian export industry. Some areas where care is necessary are outlined and potential further uses are discussed.

The Alpala copper-gold deposit is a recent, high-grade porphyry Cu-Au discovery located in the Imbabura Province of north-western Ecuador. The deposit lies along the crustal-scale Chimbo-Toachi Fault Zone within the Dagua-Piñon terrane, which is an oceanic plateau accreted to the South American convergent margin in the Late Cretaceous. The deposit is hosted by quartz diorite stocks that intrude andesitic volcanic breccias of the Oligocene to mid-Miocene San Juan de Lachas Formation. Miocene-age calc-alkaline plutonism is associated with porphyry Cu, Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits in southern and northern Ecuador. The Alpala deposit lies along a sector of the Miocene arc that has recently been underplated by the Carnegie Ridge seamount chain that induced shoaling of the subducted Nazca plate beneath northern Ecuador.Surface expressions of the deposit were recognised in May 2012 during follow-up of stream sediment anomalies, when outcropping sheeted and stockwork porphyry-related veins were discovered in Quebrada Alpala. The roots of a NW-trending, structurally-controlled lithocap were recognised over an area of 4.5 × 0.9 km. The remnant lithocap exhibits well-defined mineral zonation mapped by TerraSpecTM analyses on grid soil samples. Soil sampling, heliborne magnetic surveying and channel sampling defined initial drill targets.Seven diamond drill holes were completed in the year from September 2013. Drill hole CSD-13-005 intersected 672 m grading 0.93 per cent Cu and 0.91 g/t Au in high-temperature, inner propylitic and locally potassic-altered quartz diorite intrusions. Overlying hydrothermal clay alteration assemblages define the base of the lithocap. A NW–SE trending footwall structure defines the south-west margin of the deposit. Drill hole 5 intersected high-grade sheeted ‘B-type’ and ‘C-type’ veins (Gustafson and Hunt, 1975) that lie along the south-west margin of an 1100 × 500 m magnetic anomaly that is the focus of ongoing exploration.CITATION:Rohrlach, B, Poma, O, Rosero, B, Silva, J and Ward, J, 2015. The Bega granite at Whipstick, N.S.W., consists of a granite metasomatically altered to leucogranites and a spessartite-granite. The ore occurs in pipes controlled by jointing and shows evidence of post-depositional tectonic forces.The principal ore minerals are molybdenite and bismuthinite, with minor amounts of uraninite, pyrite, gold, bismuth, joseite A, joseite B, tetradymite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and skutterudite. The gangue minerals are microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and spessartite, with fluorite, chlorite, magnetite, and biotite as accessory minerals.The intrusion of granite was followed initially by ascending metasomatic fluids which penetrated along joints to be trapped in the domed roof of the intrusion to form the leucocratic granite. Iron-manganese-rich fluids metasomatically altered the granite to a spessartitegranite which is associated with the later deposited ore.Quartz veins and dykes of varying composition post date the ore deposition.

The pores within iron ore sinter are important for producing a high quality material that is strong and easily reduced. The complementary methods of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) were used to characterise the structure of industrial and pilot scales sinters across a wide range of pore sizes (3 nm to 100 µm for MIP and 50 µm to 5 mm for CT). The inhomogeneous nature of sinter and the variation in the measurements make it difficult to compare samples. The generalised additive modelling (GAM) approach, using the open source statistical software package, R, has been applied to highlight where there are peaks in the concentration of pore sizes. Importantly, the shape of the GAM-fitted function and the heights of the peaks show statistically significant differences between samples. For the samples investigated, the GAM-fitted functions for the MIP volume distribution of pore diameters were found to have a common set of distinctive peaks at 0.005, 0.6 and 20 µm. The GAM approach was also applied to the X-ray CT measured pore wall thickness, highlighting a single peak whose position varies between samples. The cause of these distinctive peaks and their implications for sinter quality are discussed. Correlation was found between the volume in peak 1 (0.005 µm) and the concentration of primary hematite. No correlation was found between the pore wall thickness and the strength of the sinter, suggesting the composition of the pore walls may be more important. An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. This infold has been faulted and intruded by albite porphyry resulting in the formation of a composite body of slates...

Uncertainty due to spatial and temporal variability of different pollutants found in soil, water and air is an important issue in the modelling of environmental impacts. Recognition of spatial environmental patterns is relatively straightforward to achieve by applying most of the well-known artificial neural networks or adopting a stochastic approach. However, it is the temporal component of the environmental variables that makes modelling of the environmental pollutants particularly complicated and challenging. This paper presents the results of a case study investigating the artificial neural network performance when modelling the spatio-temporal behaviour of environmental pollutants. The test case involved the modelling and prediction of the distribution of water quality indicators along a river from the point of discharge of treated mine effluents. The behaviour of river water quality indicators is rather complex and shows a lot of fluctuations due to a number of hydrochemical, hydrobiological and hydrodynamic factors. Results obtained in this study indicate that artificial neural networks provide a very powerful and robust method for simultaneous modelling of spatio-temporal behaviour of environmental pollutants.

In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. Newly published models suggest that some orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits formed by the remobilisation of trace elements during interaction with hydrothermal or metamorphic fluids from early sedimentary pyrite that was enriched in Au, As and Te. The released trace elements are transported by the fluids to favourable trap sites where they are deposited. Therefore, early enrichment of Au, As and Te in source rocks (particularly in pyritic black shale) can be crucial to the formation of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.The most important cause of the enrichment of gold and other trace elements in the sedimentary basins has been examined in this study to determine which basins are the most prospective for the development of orogenic gold deposits. An important influence for Au and other associated trace element accumulation in sedimentary pyrite is the temporal variation of trace element content in the oceans, as revealed by a database of over 1400 analyses of pyrite from black shale through geologic time. It is inferred that sediments coeval with those where sedimentary pyrite is enriched in Au and associated trace elements are more likely to be source rocks of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.Factor analysis of the trace element content of pyrite through geologic time was conducted to investigate the multivariate relationships amongst trace elements and how these chemical factors explain the uptake of trace elements. One important factor includes Te, Au, Pb and Bi content. The incorporation of these large cations into pyrite is enhanced by As3+ substituting for Fe in pyrite lattice. The As3+ ion occurs in relatively oxidised environments and, thus, it is expected that shales deposited in non-euxinic waters are better source rocks for orogenic gold deposits.The examination of both the time in which the sediments were deposited and the redox conditions of the basin, and the ocean more broadly, can be used as a guide to approximate the extent of a basin’s fertility. Ban Houayxai is a gold-silver mine operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited in Laos since 2012. The first two years of operation processed predominately soft oxidised ore but subsequent years were expected to process more fresh hard ore. Fragmentation of the fresh primary ores was also expected to be much coarser than for the soft oxide ores. This coarser and harder ore is expected to significantly reduce mill throughput and mining productivity. The Ban Houayxai management realised the potential downside risk when processing fresh harder ores and implemented a blast optimisation project to deliver finer fresh ore to the mill without unduly increasing blast induced dilution and damage.JKTech and the Ban Houayxai drill and blast team began a joint blast optimisation project in April 2013 to achieve finer fragmentation from fresh ores. This was achieved by modifying the bench geometry, blast patterns and applying exceptionally high levels of quality control during implementation. Blast induced ore loss and dilution was controlled by adjusting the ore blocks for blast movement. Finer fragmentation from these modified designs improved mill throughput for the hard fresh ore by 46 per cent above design on average. The causes of ferrosilicon loss from Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants, and the related properties of ferrosilicon, are identified. Two characteristics, corrosion resistance and saturation magnetisation, are examined in detail. The chemistry of the corrosion mechanism is described and its relationship to plant parameters discussed. Methods of reducing corrosion losses are proposed. Lack of particle homogeneity, and its influence on corrosion and abrasion is noted. The relationship between low magnetic susceptibility-and increased magnetic separator losses is demonstrated experimentally.

Q.A.L. operates as a co-operative -- the partners do not draw profits from the venture. Instead, each member of the consortium draws alumina in proportion to his share of the ownership. The method of disposal of this alumina is for the partner to decide.
