The spatial modelling of geometallurgical domains is an important step in the characterisation of an ore deposit allowing for the quantification of various rock types, their differing rock properties and the overall value of a project. The traditional approach to modelling such features is through the use of deterministic models, where a single estimate of the extents and structure of the ore deposit is mapped out by geologists based on available data and their interpretation of the geological processes. Any uncertainty in the layout of different domains is not accounted for and heterogeneities of chemical and physical properties of the orebody are likely underestimated. Spatial machine learning techniques can be used to derive geometallurgical categories, or classes, from multiscale, multiresolution and high dimensional measured rock properties. Subsequently, geostatistical simulations of these classes can be applied to obtain multiple equiprobable realisations that define the layout of the geometallurgical classes at unknown locations between boreholes, or domains. In-turn these realisations can be used quantify the uncertainties in the location of boundaries between different domains. The development of a workflow for defining geometallurgical domains and later geostatistically simulating them across the Orebody H; a complex stratabound Bedded Iron Ore deposit located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is demonstrated. This could be used to identify zones of high uncertainty where collection of additional data might help mitigate or minimise risks and in turn improve forecast production performances.

An automated facility for non-destructive elemental analysis of mine samples has been developed and tested at Mount Isa in association with the CSIRO. The analysis is based on the prompt and delayed measurement of gamma radiation emitted by the sample during and after separate fast and thermal neutron irradiation. No sub-sampling or sample preparation is required and the analyser is operated by one person that would otherwise be splitting drill core in preparation for conventional analysis. The analyser has been calibrated to measure the following (precision in parenthesis): Ag (14 ppm), Pb (0.5 wt%), Zn (0.5 wt%), Cu (0.04 wt%), Fe (0.7 wt%), S (1.1 wt%), SiO2 (0.8 wt%), A1203 (0.07 wt%), Mn (0.05 wt%), specific gravity (0.02 g cmt). Crushed or whole drill core samples that range in size between 0.5 m and 1.8 m of equivalent BQ size drill core can be analysed at a rate of six samples per hour. If required, drill core samples can be re-packed in their original configuration for storage following analysis. Standard samples are measured every day to ensure operational stability. The analyser is controlled by a personal computer which prints the results and stores them along with the raw data on the computer hard disk. This paper reports the performance of the analyser during 1992 for routine analysis of drill core from the lead ore bodies of both Mount Isa and Hilton mines.

German coal mining suffers from rock temperatures up to 600C which are the same as in South Africa at 3000 - 4000 m of depth. Therefore cooling plants have increased in the last decade and today a cooling power of nearly 200 MW is installed in the total Ruhr District. Cooling a mine is a little bit different from cooling a bottle of beer in a refrigerator in the kitchen because the heat taken from the bottle of beer is delivered to the kitchen some centimetres away; in mining the cooling-problem is more difficult: here the bottle of beer corresponds to the airflow at the coal face and the kitchen to the surface, So it is necessary to transport the heat or the "coldness" a long distance. In the address by Ieuan Morris some systems for transporting heat from the coalface to the evaporator of the cooling machine and further from the condenser of the machine to a return airflow were described. The following is a short idea of the way this problem is treated in Germany.

A tectonic interpretation of the Coromandel Peninsula which suggests that the basement underwent tensional collapse at its northern and southern ends would permit more ready penetration of late stage magmatic fluids. This hypothesis is consistent with regional trends of the chloride content of low grade geothermal waters and of the yield of gold and silver per unit weight of quartz worked. The consequences of such a model are that mercury should not only be a good pathfinder for Coromandel gold, but that it should be correlative with ratios of base metals high in the zoning or paragenetic sequences to those lower in the sequences. This is demonstrated successfully in an area of mineralisation in the southern Coromandel.

Direct reduction of iron ore (DR) is one of the promising technology emerging in the world's steel industry. Kinetics and Mossbauer studies of DR with hydrogen have been carried out at two temperatures of 600¦C and 800¦C in this investigation. The results show that different controlling steps govern the reduction rate at different temperatures. The mechanism was also found to vary during the reduction. The Mossbauer spectra of the samples reduced in various time intervals were studied to determine the phase changes during reduction.

In submitting the accompanying sketch and description, the writer mentions that he has found this "gadget" a useful assay office adjunct.He believes that some millmen and assayers have been confronted, from time to time, with large samples of mill pulp for assay purposes and that although the commonly used method of coning and quartering dry sample is simple and effective, provided the samples are of reasonable proportion, the operator is frequently confronted with samples of pulp, sometimes up to 50 gallons. The writer stresses the advantage of being able to handle these samples. This fact inspired the design of the "gadget,"which was developed at the Kalgoorlie State Battery and has been found to give very reliable results. It has considerably eased the work of the assay office.Description. - A cone of suitable dimensions according to requirements (this one is about six gallons' capacity) is mounted on a light angle-iron frame and has a small hand-operated agitator paddle let into it far mixing purposes. The agitator and head frame are removable to facilitate cleaning. Four outlet pipes at the bottom at right angles to each other are controlled with one common plug, externally operated for discharging the pulp.Each operation of the machine delivers four equal parts; one or more of these can be used for further division as conditions require. Samples can thus be reduced to suitable assay room size in a few minutes.The dotted lines, enclosing the shaded portion, represent the four-bladed paddle.Each paddle is slotted with three parallel slots. The Finisterre Range on the north coast of Papua New Guinea is the uplifted forearc riagio.n. of a modern arc-continent collision. The core of the range is composed of the P- nisterre Volcanics, an Oligocene''-arc terrane. The southern flank of the range consists of a clastic sedimentary sequence which is an uplifted accretionary wedge and collision complex. This clastic sequence can be subdivided into three distinct units. To the south of aiid structurally below the Finisterre Valcanics are the Mebu beds, an Oligocene- $arly Miocene sequence of volcanolithic turbidites. The Erap Structural Complex is south of, and structurally below the Mebu 43eds. , It consists of three subunits; the 3rly Pliocene micaceous turbidites of the Sukurum unit, contemporaneous pillow basalts AF{ the Basalt unit, and Late Pliocene to Pleistocene volcanolithic turbidites of the -Nariawang unit. The Quaternary Leron Formation, a fluvial to shallow marine 'clastic unit, is the southernmdst. and structurally lowest unit of the clastic -sequence The Finisterre Range is dominated by a fold-and-thrust belt with most thrusts "dipping steeply N. Melange fabric _ is developed in the vicinity of major thrusts. "ffle thrust belt strikes NW, oblique to the regional convergence direction, but no strike-slip motion is observed along NW striking faults.

Management at all levels continually strive to optimise, or make the most of resources available to them. Daily, decisions are being made on how to most efficiently locate and exploit an ore body, then process and market the recovered metal. At one level this optimisation process in the Australian mining industry appears to be successful, for example, witness the improvement in productivity and reduction in operating costs through the 1980s. Yet, at another level the industry's performance has been appreciably below expectations as measured by rate of return criteria. Companies likely to exhibit superior performance are those that are able to co-ordinate, through good planning, the optimisation process at all levels of the organisation. An important role for general management is therefore to provide the context or boundary conditions in which optimisation can Proceed.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

A 1991 survey of 48 mining companies, employing more than 24 000 employees, showed that disabling injury and disease rates continue to be the most common measurements of safety management effectivness in the Australian mining industry.Of the companies surveyed, 22 claimed to be making regular safety audits. Of these only two listed the improvement of audit scores among their goals for 1991.Influenced by loss control management thinking, some managers have expanded the scope of their safety programs to include all accidental operational losses adversely affecting mine profitability.Learning from their new experience with total quality management some managers are now recognising that successful safety management outcomes depend on the effective management of program inputs. They are thus turning away from measurements of accident consequences - the failures of the management system - to measurements of management control.The new focus of safety management attention is now on corrective actions before accidents happen.

The Eloise Cu-Au deposit is 60 km SE of Cloncurry in NW Queensland and has a current indicated reserve of 3.2 Mt @ 5.8 per cent Cu, 1.5gA Au and I9g/t Ag. It is hosted by metasediments and metabasic rocks that underwent amphibolite facies metamorphism at 550-600¦C and less than 3.5 kb. Peak metamorphism coincided with the regional D2 event which produced an S2 foliation with north-south strike and variable sub-vertical to steep east or west dip. The deposit is associated with several major shear zones parallel to the S2 foliation. The lodes form part of a large alteration system that is localised by the retrograde shear zones. Homblende-biotite-quartz with minor sulphides occur early in the alteration paragenesis which is overprinted by chlorite-muscovite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ¦calcite+¦nagnetite. The later assemblage replaces the earlier Fe-K alteration as well as Fe-rich metamorphic assemblages such as homblende, biotite and staurolite indicating a post peak metamorphism timing for ore formation. Although replacive textures are the most common, the alteration can display open space infill and brecciation as well as durchbewegung and mylonite textures indicating that mineralisation occurred during ongoing ductile deformation. All these features are crosscut by a later brittle phase of calcite-chlorite-quartz¦pyrite alteration.

Achieving quick underground access after the completion of an open pit mine can be critical to maintaining project value and ensuring regular ore feed to the mill. This paper outlines the design and construction for two portals in an active open pit to commence underground development quickly whilst installing appropriate ground control to maintain long term access in an uncertain setting. Implementation of the portal designs was complicated by the change in underground design from hangingwall access to footwall access late in the life of the open pit due to preferable ground conditions. The portal locations did not have easy access for ground support installation integrated into the pit design due to the timing of the underground design changes. Practical implementation of the ground support systems subsequently became a key part of the project. Intact rock strength, rock mass characteristics, gradational weathering / alteration profile and structural information were modelled against pit displacement monitoring as the basis from which the portals were located and ground support schemes designed. Conditions around one of the portals necessitated numerical modelling to estimate the appropriate level of ground control for long term stability. The design was completed whilst the open pit was actively on-going and the portal areas not entirely exposed. The rock mass assessment and analysis for the two portals indicated different ground support scheme capacities would be required. The expected level of control for one of the portals also necessitated the use of monitoring with extensometers and load cells to ensure the rock mass response and ground support scheme performed as planned. Construction of the portals demonstrates the benefit of a considered design process, a plan which allows practical installation of ground support schemes where access is limited, the benefit of ongoing monitoring to ensure performance remains within design limits and the challenges involved working within an active pit with limited floor space.

Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.

CRONIMET Australia in cooperation with Speciality Metals International, the mining lease holder of the Mt Carbine Tungsten mine, have demonstrated the preconcentration and processing of large (>12 million tonnes) tailings and mine waste dumps on site in far north Queensland. The first stage of this project has proven the economic viability of preconcentration using sensor-based particle sorting whilst ensuring high recovery of industry critical tungsten minerals – wolframite and scheelite. Sensor-based sorting technology have enabled the production of a sorter product to feed the existing wet gravity plant ensuring higher recoveries and increasing concentrate production. Processing of 1,000 tonne low grade samples using the TOMRA x-ray transmission (XRT) ore sorter installed on site, has reduced the volume of material entering the downstream wet processing plant by up to 60%. The sorted 10-25mm size range produced the highest upgrade ratio (product/feed) of 24:1 and achieved sorter concentrate grade of 1.52% WO3, sorter waste grades below 0.014% WO3 and metal recoveries of up to 93.4%. The appropriately sized, barren sorter waste material is also sold as aggregate and other quarrying products and thus adding to the overall economic benefit of the project. The utilisation of the sorting technology on site has produced an economically viable project, significantly reduced capital cost, and reduced the time to market of the final tungsten concentrate. The next phase of the project includes design and installation of a larger two sorter plant capable of over 150t/h feedrate.

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

The resurgence of Silicosis and Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in coalmines has placed the spotlight back on the management of worker exposure to particulate matter across all mining sectors (Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis Select Committee, 2017). There already exists a substantial body of knowledge on particulate matter and its impacts upon human health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). The contribution of silica to respiratory disease is well known and there is a growing concern for exposure to diesel particulate matter. However, it is also clear that there are major gaps in our understanding. In part, those gaps relate to the contribution to adverse health effects of mineralogical constituents in the dust (LaBranche et al, 2021a). It is also becoming evident that the size and shape of the particulate matter can affect its potential impact on human health.The University of Queensland has developed a methodology for characterising respirable and inhalable dust samples using scanning electron microscopy. Multiple samples from numerous mining operations have already been analysed using the UQ methodology. The process has been successful in showing the variety of mineralogica lcomponents and particle size distributions presentin various areas of the mines.

The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world's production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.
