For metallurgical plant design, it is necessary to progress through successive phases of test work, piloting and process development before involving all the other engineering disciplines and “freezing” the process design criteria and flow sheet. This process usually relies upon the experience, skills and personal preferences of various technology providers, study and engineering entities, test work and metallurgical laboratories and, most importantly, the owner’s team and its operators. Current industry trends include lower grades, more complex orebodies, geometallurgy in defining orebody variation and design envelopes, more common “hybrid” plant processes and the market demands for more reliable, timely and predictable early plant performance.This paper will discuss interaction of these trends and provide guidelines for the level of detail and technical complexity required for a number of different “typical” examples. The paper will pay particular attention to the study definition level translated into the required detail and certainty needed by the overall process “owner” and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) equipment suppliers to ensure the best real plant performance. Some recent case studies will be discussed. In many projects, at a late stage of project definition, it has become common practice to undertake a “value engineering” phase. Although it could be argued that this should be undertaken earlier, it is largely driven by an overall need to reduce capex and “optimise” the perceived “fat” built into the project during the detailed design process. This value engineering can be very counterproductive to project timing and operational performance and warrants discussion.The paper is intended to promote discussion on a topic of wide interest. The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future. Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process. The Royal Bafokeng community in South AfricaÆs North West Province represents a unique case in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of its positioning in the natural resource economy. It receives royalties directly from mining firms for the extraction of Platinum Group Metals, which include platinum, ferrochrome, rhodium and palladium. In 2007, royalty income of about R290 million (approximately US$32.2 million) was reported. Such direct revenues have enabled the community to invest in educational, medical and other social infrastructure, thus complementing governmentÆs social provisioning efforts. Indeed, the Bafokeng community owes its present-day modernisation efforts to mineral rights, and in particular, the legal-institutional arrangement that has enabled it to play an active role in South AfricaÆs lucrative extractive economy. However, the distribution of platinum wealth in this community is not only uneven, but also appears to have had little impact on the broader socio-economic conditions in the community. Despite claims by community leaders of heavy investment in education and skills development, the community continues to be faced with very high levels of unemployment, illiteracy, sprawling informal settlements, poor access to medical facilities and malnutrition. This paper examines the sociological paradoxes and contradictions thrown up by the approach adopted to involve community members in the mobilisation of mining royalties for developmental ends. The central argument is that the current æmodelÆ contradicts the communityÆs stated goals of using platinum wealth to drive up broad-based development and modernisation. This is mainly because it leaves out the vast majority of community members, who are uneducated and unskilled. The core analysis is based on pilot data from an ongoing study in the Royal Bafokeng community.

This paper will first discuss the fundamental requirements for reliable discharge of backfill by gravity alone at high per cent solids. This discussion will include brief mention of the underlying principles of saturated solids flow contrasted to that of stirred tank or dilute discharge systems. Here the need to possess full knowledge of the flow properties of the stored material will be highlighted. In addition proper account must be made of the silo overflow weir and settling capacity to match plant throughput. Here opportunity will be taken to highlight the complexity of this multi-phase flow situation as well as the general yet paramount requirements for reliable solids flow. It will be shown that by proper attention to the multi-phase considerations gravity discharge of slurries as a consolidated bed with minimal water content is possible. Such high solids discharge results in greatly reduced demand for process water. In addition pumping costs are reduced as is the delay time associated with the mine drainage operation. Confirmation of successful applications will be highlighted by reference to several recent case studies. In the concluding phase mention will be made of the key yet very simple and effective operation techniques which enhance reliable discharge. The simplicity and reliability of properly designed gravity discharge backfill tank systems suggests increased application of this technology by the mining industry.

Best practice for the submission of samples to an internal or commercial laboratory requires quality control materials to be included for the purpose of independently and comprehensively assessing laboratory performance. These quality controls include the use of certified reference materials (CRMs) and may be blind to the laboratory. Iron ore companies purchase these materials from reputable manufacturers from stock of run-of-mine materials at the appropriate grades. The international standard, ISO 17034 (ISO, 2016), specifies the competency requirements for organisations manufacturing reference materials, and includes rigorous requirements for the assessment of homogeneity, stability and establishment of property values and their uncertainties. Homogeneity is one of the most important measures of suitability for all certified reference materials and refers to the degree to which the composition and properties of a sample are uniform throughout the batch, relative to the analytical precision of the method. More specifically, homogeneity studies of candidate reference materials should be assessed for both within sample variance and between sample variance with appropriate statistical controls. The design and application of homogeneity studies are discussed as they apply to both crushed and pulverised reference materials. Crushed certified reference materials have been utilised by the iron ore industry for a number of years and provide the user with a critical assessment of variances in sample preparation in addition to analysis. Crushed reference materials are similar in presentation to an RC sample and are generally used as discrete parcels of material submitted to the laboratory from the field. Pulverise certified reference materials miss the sample preparation step and are subsampled from th delivered sachet at the point of analysis. This paper compares the relative homogeneity performance of crushed and pulverised certified reference materials by grade across key iron ore chemical constituents. Outcomes are benchmarked to the international standard ISO 9516 (ISO, 2003) for the determination of various elements in iron ores by lithium borate fusion and X-ray fluorescence. Practical implications are discussed with reference to a case study from an iron ore laboratory in the Pilbara.

Tandem row stator arrangements are common in the last stage of multirow, gas turbine compressors. Tandem row stators, or stator and de-swirler vane combinations are used to relieve the loading on the stator but ensure axial flow leaving the compressor. In this paper a standard 40” (1016 mm) ventilation fan in the Air Blow Fan’s range is modified to utilise the plate support struts on the barrel to relieve the aerodynamic loading on the aerofoil stator. Performance maps for both versions of the fan were generated using computational fluid dynamics and are compared across a wide range of rotor setting angles showing a clear advantage of approximately 2 per cent in efficiency for the tandem blade design. In addition, the area of high efficiency that represents the practically usable area of the map extends over a greater area in terms of flow rate and total pressure rise.

Exploration, including research, has fuelled the enormous expansion of the Australian mineral industry in the last three decades. Analysis of success and failure in exploration and research has therefore potentially powerful lessons and messages which may be used to influence the future shape and direction of the mineral industry. Research has been an integral part of organised corporate mineral exploration since its beginnings in Australia in the 1930s. In corporations, the activity generally called project generation or new project development is the main expression of exploration research but mostly it goes unidentified and poorly documented except perhaps when a successful discovery is made and reported on. The competitive nature of exploration means that extended and detailed analysis of corporate exploration research across the industry is impossible to achieve.

Codelco Chile is currently developing the El Teniente û New Mine Level Project (NMLP) in order to increase ore production by seeking to mine the ore deposit located under the current operational orebody. Reserves of 2000 million tonnes (Mt) have been quantified, which will be extracted as from the year 2017 by using the panel caving and progressive sinking method. Codelco and SKM Minmetal (SKM) jointly developed the project prefeasibility stage (PFS), closing these studies in March 2008. The first part of the project approach is to replace mine production currently feeding the Colon concentrator facilities with 137 000 tonnes per day (t/d), focusing attention on a production increase from the year 2026 up to 180 000 t/d. Project efforts have also been centred on maximising the contribution of new technologies for both construction and operational phases of the New Mine Level, together with selecting the best mine infrastructure to keep El Teniente operations going on for the next 50 years. Implicit in this is the inherent improvement of a variety of current Mina El Teniente process and management practices. The plan is to reduce actual mine operational risks and take advantage of new opportunities afforded by the project, which is in effect a greenfield project with respect to the implementation of fundamental changes in the labour and business environment. In addition, issues related to human resources, maintenance and management, materials handling, establishing centralised operations and accesses, automation and remote operations control and power efficiency could also be addressed. The project, beyond the New Mine Level exploitation, considers the mineÆs future potential, with a second deeper exploration in prospect named Deep Level. Finally, the project identifies features that would add value to the mine operations, in an initiative named æSpace for Future TechnologiesÆ. This will allow the eventual implementation of new electrical equipment and the application of mechanised technologies and other process improvements for the mine development.

Underground rock mechanics was initiated as a formal discipline in Australia by early studies for underground structures for the Snowy Mountains Scheme in the 1950s. These techniques were quickly embraced by underground mining and there has been steady development to the present time. The paper reviews the status of current techniques for rock mechanics studies and discusses some important issues such as ground support, mine filling and caving. It concludes that a considerable degree of engineering judgement is still required for the practical application of rock mechanics to underground mine design.

There are many compelling reasons why correct sampling schemes should be standard practice in the mining industry, yet there are numerous examples where poor sampling practices are known to exist in the business yet permitted to continue. It is not just technical issues that can be ascribed to the reasons for the continued use of incorrect methods. This paper proposes non-technical reasons why incorrect sampling practices continue, and identifies potential ways to overcome them.

The concept of the circular economy has been gaining traction both in Europe and China.In Europe the Ellen Macarthur Foundation see their mission as accelerating the transition from a linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model that is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Chinese Circular Economy initiative is effectively a sustainable consumption and production program utilising cleaner production, industrial ecology and life cycle management approaches to meet the national challenges of maintaining rapid economic growth while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and maintaining social progress. A key characteristic of both of these circular economy initiatives is to design out, reuse or minimise the generation of waste.The mining sector, by definition, is represented by linear rather than circular activities, by supplying resources to society. However, being one of the world’s largest waste generators, the sector can adopt similar logic to that of the circular economy to improve its sustainability performance. Waste is a critical issue along the whole metals value chain, from mining waste to eventual end-of-life products, such as scrap steel from construction and demolition waste or the growing problem of electronic waste.CITATION:Corder, G and Golev, A, 2016. The development of robust, economical transport infrastructure has been identified as a key driver to sovereign economic growth. Notwithstanding the value of undeveloped mineral resources, unless they can be brought to market they are of little value. Within a global context, the continent of Africa probably faces one of the most significant transport driven economic development programs as countries strive to unlock their much sought after resources.The UN’s Africa Review Report on Transport (United Nations Economic and Social Council, 2009) provides an excellent context for the issue facing African countries and the potential for investment in transport to solve many of the intrinsic problems they are confronted with. With little exception, economic development in Africa is very likely to be driven ‘off the back’ of transport development – and more specifically from heavy-haul rail as a means by which economic wealth can be derived from export of the continent’s vast natural and mineral resources to the world. The report found:transport is a key driver of economic development and poverty reduction;road transport is the most dominant mode in Africa;the ‘Cost to Market’ of African goods is hampered by the reliance upon road transport;the cost of road transport is not just economic – 19 per cent of the world’s road fatalities were recorded on African roads;African railways are seen to be disjointed and under-utilised;Africa’s ports are key to export trade - yet only six ports (three in Egypt, and three in South Africa) handle about 50 per cent of the continent’s total container traffic;the cost of transport is increasing making African trade even less competitive; andsignificant negative impacts of Africa’s reliance on road transport – health, and greenhouse emissions.We understand that mining the resource is only part of the solution – it has to be put to market at a competitive landed cost.Most African countries face huge costs associated with transport development and ongoing operation – in many cases beyond their available resources.The Australian rail industry has faced and solved many of these challenges.

Australia has a long history of underground mining. Even withadvances in open cut mining equipment, techniques andeconomics, many orebodies are still best mined by undergroundmeans. In addition, modern exploration tools are æuncoveringÆorebodies that are at increasing depths. South African mines arecurrently producing from below 3 km, and developing down to5 km depths û it is likely that Australian mines will also becomemuch deeper over the next 20 years. One of the most significanttechnical challenges in deep mines is the problem of heat.Community expectations and legislated standards continue todrive operations towards improving the working conditions inmines. The hazards and costs associated with chronic hotworking conditions (heat illness, poor safety, poor productivity,higher operating costs and poor morale) are also becomingincreasingly recognised (Brake, Donoghue and Bates, 1998). Theexposure of miners to many other occupational hazards has beenreduced over the past 50 years. However, despite air-conditionedcabins greatly reducing the heat stress on mobile plant operators,there are still many Australian mine workers subject to levels ofthermal stress that existed a century ago. There are severalreasons for this, including a frequently-poor understanding of thephysiology of working in heat by mine management, no agreedmining code of practice for working in heat, the lack of a robust,practical-sized instrument to measure heat stress, the costpressures on the industry and, to some extent, deep-seatedtraditional management and worker practices. Howeversignificant progress has been made in many of these areas (Brakeand Bates, in press), with the net result that there is likely to be a trend towards installation of refrigeration of some form in manyAustralian mines in the future. This will add directly to the costof operation, but will also have direct and indirect benefits,including cost benefits. It should also be noted that Australia isnot at the forefront of adopting practices to manage temperaturesin the workplace: South African metal mines usually haverefrigerated cooling, and Canadian mines spend large sums onheating, with heating costs (averaged over a full year) of up to$A1 per tonne mined (Bandopadhyay et al, 1997). The history of mine refrigeration dates back to 1919 when thefirst plant was installed at Morro Velho, Brazil. By 1965, the totalinstalled capacity (worldwide) reached about 100 MW(R)i. Since 1965 the growth in mine refrigeration capacity has beenexponential, with a doubling every six or seven years (Howes andNixon, 1997). South Africa is by far the largest user of minerefrigeration, with over 300 refrigeration machines installed. This paper discusses the key design issues associated with theapplication of refrigeration in underground metal or coal mines.Whilst the emphasis is on large, surface plants, small, surface orunderground refrigeration plants can also be very effective in thecorrect application and many of the principles of design andoperation are the same.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014. The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.

Two coal samples (810 Panel and Area 900) collected from Clarence Colliery have been tested under a controlled heating procedure to evaluate the gas evolution trends corresponding to increasing temperature. Gas evolution data are normally used to identify key gas indicators and validate the trigger action response plan settings for the mine as part of the Principal Hazard Management Plan for Spontaneous Combustion. The samples were located some 6 km apart and there is a significant coal-type difference between them. At low temperatures (<100°C), the Graham’s ratio (GR) values for the two samples are almost identical. However, at elevated temperatures, there is a significant difference, with the 810 Panel coal having higher GR values than the Area 900 coal. This is most likely due to a difference in the coal reactivity. The 810 Panel coal does not evolve ethylene until temperatures in excess of 140°C are reached, whereas Area 900 coal evolves ethylene once temperatures in excess of 120°C are reached. The 810 Panel coal also produces significant ethane evolution (200 ppm) at low temperatures (50°C) due to the presence of retained ethane seam gas, which decreases as the temperature increases due to desorption from the coal. Once the coal temperature exceeds 130°C, the ethane evolution increases again due to coal oxidation reactions, reaching levels of 50 ppm. In contrast, the Area 900 coal has no significant low-temperature ethane evolution, and ethane evolution only increases once the coal temperature exceeds 120°C. There are also noticeable differences in the trends of other gases evolved from the coal. These findings have implications for the interpretation of gas monitoring results from the two different areas of the mine. They also illustrate the need for obtaining results from each new area of a mine as it develops so that changing gas evolution trends can be identified in advance of mining.CITATION:Beamish, B, Sargeant, J, Levi, T and Theiler, J, 2015. Technology adoption in the mining industry has been steadily increasing over the past decade, driven by the need to improve operational efficiency, safety, sustainability, and profitability. As mining companies wish to implement solutions to improve mining safety and productivity, various technologies are being integrated into mining operations to enhance processes, reduce risks, and optimise resource utilisation. Adoption of new technologies such as autonomous trucks requires a strong focus on foundational operational technology (OT) and a systems-thinking approach. OT support is critical however, OT is traditionally not considered or integrated into standard maintenance activities. Consequently, sourcing and applying service support to OT systems in real-time has posed significant challenges to date. Neglecting the monitoring and upkeep of these operational technologies and equipment can lead to a host of adverse consequences. Operating instability becomes more prevalent, necessitating reactive measures, and the vulnerability to cybersecurity threats increases significantly. To address OT monitoring and maintenance challenges, a systems wide mindset and remote support discipline must be utilised. Remote operations support refers to real-time, 24/7 monitoring, control and support of site OT: network, production systems, maintenance systems, enterprise systems and mobile and fixed plant through a single interface remote from site. The presence of a disciplined team, grounded in a systems-oriented approach, is of the utmost importance to remote monitoring, given the intricate interdependencies of OT systems. The ability to understand the relationships among multiple systems, coupled with the capacity to distinguish between symptoms and root causes, assumes a pivotal role in operations. Through diligent monitoring and the astute understanding of system thresholds, remote operations support can actively identify and alleviate constraints, in turn, serving as the enabler for transformative advancements in technology output.
