The paper examines the possibility of applying the monolithic packing technique developed in the UK to the division of wide development drivages in Australia, so enabling double entries for longwall retreat panels to be created from shortwall units. The monolithic pack of the UK therefore becomes a monolithic partition in this proposed Australian application. A method developed for the analysis of the load development in packs installed behind longwall advancing faces is adapted and used to predict the support performance of the monolithic partition. Conclusions are made regarding partition construction and possible rates of advance.

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is progressing its Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) project to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates for advanced battery materials. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the process also generates a hematite by-product (~640 ktpa). The hematite byproduct precipitated from the process, hereafter ‘hematite precipitate’, is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. However, it is a fine <20 μm crystalline, hydrometallurgical precipitate and is produced as a filter cake containing a high moisture content of about 15 per cent. This is considerably different from natural hematite ore and is expected to change its performance during sintering. In the present study, laboratory scale sintering tests were undertaken to evaluate the potential impacts of substitution of the hematite precipitate for traditional magnetite concentrates and further for Australian hematite-goethite ores in a simulated industry base blend. Substitution of hematite precipitate for magnetite concentrates was found to slightly increase the sintering temperature required to achieve the strength of laboratory sinters. However, further substitution of hematite precipitate for Australian hematite-goethite ores slightly reduced the sintering temperature required to achieve the laboratory sinter strength. These results reflect the reduction in Al2O3 contents of the blends and are consistent with the trend observed in industry and pilot scale facilities. The reduction in sintering temperature generally correlates to a reduction in fuel rate in the larger scale sintering process. The pore structure of selected laboratory sinters was further examined and discussed in conjunction with sinter strength. The pore structure images highlighted the relative difference between the blends with the most obvious difference being seen at 1290°C which correlates well with the laboratory tumble index (TI). The laboratory sinter samples showed an increase in porosity and irregularity of pore shape, as hematite substitution increased demonstrating the correlation between a more porous structure and a lower TI.

Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. Coal/gas outbursts were one of the rather difficult safety problems faced in the coal mines of this Country, with coal fields characterized by frequent disturbances of folds, faults and pinch-offs. With average mining depth about 500m below surface, several such accidents occurred with up to 500 tonnes of coal outburst. In recent years, after a series of improving countermeasures had been undertaken, gas outburst accidents had been greatly decreased. The characteristics of gas outbursts in Taiwan coal mines include relating to coal petrography, mining depth and the other deformation forces. All these have been investigated, trying to determine the parameter of outbursts under natural conditions. The preventive countermeasures include predicting tests, de-stressing boring in coal seams, the emergency procedures during outbursts and certain improving options.

Coal exports are forecast to grow strongly, so that coal is likely to remain very important to Australia for the foreseeable future. However there is no sign that prices or profitability will rise of their own accord. Therefore the intense squeeze on costs will continue for the foreseeable future. This will mean lower manning, more outsourcing and probably an increasing rate of company attrition. As well, the political pressure from the greenhouse debate is only going to intensify and the pressure on the Federal Government after Kyoto is likely to be irresistible.

Digital Simulation of Particulate Processes The inherent complexity of mineral particulates (shape, size and mineralogical texture) has challenged conventional simulation model approaches for decades. Much effort was expedited in using mathematical assumptions to accommodate stereological effect. With the advance of instrumental methods such as x-ray microtomography 3D structure can, in many cases, be measured directly. The information derived from such measurements provides direct input to building the structural digital model. In addition digital simulation methods that enable creation of process realistic particulate properties in an efficient digital computer space have demonstrated their effectiveness to model a variety of realistic packing, sorting and multi-phase processes. The paper reviews recent advances in the use of information derived from 3D micro-tomographic imaging and laser scanning technology can be coupled with digital methods to enable simulation of tablet compaction and dissolution, filtration and permeability, column packing and leaching kinetics, packing and cementation of nuclear waste. By assigning &apos;properties&apos; to a digital zone (voxel) in the computational space it is possible to mimic the realistic characteristics of quite complex particulate mineral processing systems. The system self-adapts to correct the coherent particle characteristics (shape, size, compound, porosity) with time. Such simulations are useful to elucidate the sensitivity of system performance to variations in process parameters. Dimensional scaling of the approach is also possible, as the case studies will illustrate, in deploying the method to both small (micron) and large (m) features. The use of process realistic simulations presents experimental challenges in code validation. It is in this context that other tomographic methods play a role in direct 3D measurement of system behaviour such as electrical and optical sensors.

The large body of knowledge about the relation between chemical process efficiency and mineralogical features is of only limited use. The profession ought to try to improve the methods of using information as well as adding to the knowledge. One attempt isòdescribed. Correlations between process efficiency factors and the mineralogical features of low- grade concentrates have been developed from both a theoretical analysis and experimental measurements. The ultimate recovery of a reactive phase in an inert matrix can be calcu- lated from simple measurements of the particle size, porosity and pore size of the concentrate, and the grain size of the reactive mineral., The rate of recovery, up to 98% recovery, can be calculated from simple measurements of particle size, porosity, proportion of reactive mineral and tortuosity. Some details are given. The correlations are of potential use in process selection and preliminary design. Satisfactory predictions have been made for near-ideal systems. Improvements in the measurement of pore size and tests on more realistic materials are required. The ultimate benefit of the correlations will be determined by the magnitude and frequency of the effects of mineralogical features other than those specified above.

The Sams Creek gold deposit near Takaka in northwest Nelson was discovered in 1974 by CRA Exploration (CRAE) geologists. CRAE recognised the potential of the area and subsequently undertook a comprehensive exploration programme of geological mapping, soil and rock-chip sampling, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling. Exploration defined sporadic gold mineralisation contained entirely within a deformed and hydrothermally altered, peralkaline granite porphyry dyke with a seven kilometre strike length, and up to 60 m thickness. Rock chip samples indicated extensive and economically significant gold grades over approximately one kilometre strike of the dyke at Main Zone prospect. CRAE completed 30 diamond drill holes at this prospect and defined a limited resource. Oceana Gold Limited recommenced active exploration at the Sams Creek Project in late 2002, focusing on improving the geological understanding and known resource at Main Zone. Completion of 1041 m diamond drilling successfully increased the estimated resource to 10.7 Mt @ 2.12 g/t Au containing 729 000 oz at a 0.7 g/t cut off. A further campaign of 1560 m diamond drilling was undertaken in 2003 - 2004 to extend the resource and test the continuity of high grade mineralised zones. Deeper intersections of the porphyry dyke indicated geometrical complexity and grade variability similar to that observed at shallow levels. Recent research suggests that Sams Creek can be geologically classified as a variant of intrusion-related gold systems, and therefore comparable to some other, very large gold deposits. However, due to the rugged terrain and dyke geometry, surface drilling is reaching the limits of viability at Main Zone. If infill drilling continues to be successful then an underground decline may be developed to facilitate further exploration. Potential also exists along strike, where other significant gold anomalies are known but largely untested by drilling.

New technology is a significant factor in the present upsurge in world, and Australian, gold extraction and production. The main technologies in current use for gold production are described, referring to overseas developments. Areas where existing techniques have shortcomings or new methods are needed are pinpointed and discussed. Much research work on gold metallurgy is under way round the world, and many new developments have potential. Many of the current research activities round the world are covering unusual and striking areas, with surprising results starting to come through. Some of the "blue sky" techniques reportedly under investigation are identified, together with consideration of when changes in technology are of value. The consequences of new technology for personnel involved in gold plant operations will be raised, including the new education now required.

The recent (2005) amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 have made it clear that there is no obligation on an applicant to consult. However the importance and value in consulting with the community, particularly before commencing a major project, cannot be understated. &nbsp; This paper looks at the provisions of the Resource Management Act as they relate to consultation and public participation in the process, and will discuss the benefits of consultation both before an application is filed and following the filing of the application. Engaging with the local community can help shape a project to better fit the community, engender support and address opposition. In short, taking the extra step to what is legally required, can help smooth what is potentially a bumpy road. Examples in practice of the value of consultation are given.

Geologically credible comparisons between selected trans-Tasman and SW Pacific geological provinces and units, especially those that contain significant mineralisation in Australia, can help provide a useful exploration framework for New Zealand. As part of a six-year Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ (MWE) research programme, we have targeted selected geological units in eastern Australia for comparison and contrast with their potential New Zealand counterparts. In future years, the programme will focus on geological units in New Caledonia.

The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.

The Vanyukov Process is a bath smelting technology, that has been investigated for over 25 years and since 1977 has been in use on an industrial scale. Results of trials that have been carried out at the various pilot facilities over the past 15 years are considered in this paper. Recent data contributions to New Zealand Mesozoic terrane geology confirm the consensus interpretation thatNew Zealand grew by the progressive addition of material by plutonic and accretionary processes along the Gondwana margin. The data also: 1. emphasise the discontinuous but inter-related nature of these processes of continental growth, 2. better establish a direct Gondwana correlation of the Western Province and probable Gondwana provenance of at least some of the Eastern Province, 3. suggest specific times and places when passive or strike-slip rather than subduction regimes are recorded along the south Gondwana margin, and 4. potentially lead to interpretations emphasising parautochthonous rather than far travelled relationships between many New Zealand terranes. &nbsp;

Analysis of the 2001 Australian census data set can be used to gain a detailed insight into the trends and levels of employment in different industry sectors. There is a common perception that employment of geoscientists within the mining industry and indeed across all industries has decreased significantly. However, the data shows that the number of individuals stating that they are geoscientists employed across all industries has decreased by only five per cent from 5336 in 1996 to 5067 in 2001. Within the mining industry (Australia and New Zealand Standard Industrial ClassificationÆs û ANZICÆs mining class), the number of geoscientists employed has decreased by ten per cent from 2701 in 1996 to 2441 in 2001. These figures, while showing a decrease, do not reflect the magnitude of the decrease commonly perceived. However, further analysis shows the number of geoscientists employed in mineral exploration may have decreased significantly more.

The poor reconciliation between the values of estimated and actual grades can cause major economic losses to the mining industry. In a mining operation grade reconciliation is comparing the values of estimated grade calculated in exploration stage with actual grade obtained from blastholes&apos; data. Many different factors affect the degree of reconciliation in a mining operation. In this paper we investigate the factors related to estimated grade which affects the reconciliation process in the exploration stage of the orebody. These factors are the sources of uncertainty in the rest of mine life. In this area the most important factors are inherent variability, statistical uncertainty and systematic uncertainty. A probabilistic model was presented to model each source of uncertainty. The implementation of proposed model was checked and its validity was investigated using real data in an iron open pit mine in Iran.

Radio Detection and Ranging is an active form of remote sensing. The-imaging system sends out a source of electromagnetic energy to &apos;illuminate&apos; the terrain and then records the energy returned. The wavelengths used by radar are in the microwave region and vary from a few millimetres to about a metre. Radar systems are independent of lighting conditions and weather. In addition, targets may be illuminated in the optimum direction to enhance features of interest. New Zealand was one of the principal investigators on the Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) experiment, part of the payload on Challenger Mission 41-G in October 1984. Data collected over New Zealand was restricted to two very poor quality optical images and one poor quality digital data take. The digital image covered the ranges between the Hawke Bay-Wairoa Basin and the Volcanic Plateau. Variations of texture in this image frequently were indicative of variations in lithology and induration. The image also clearly depicted major faults where these had had a significant effect on the topography.
