The estimation of the grinding mill charge weight is vital to ensure its efficient performance. Mill underloading or overloading can cause losses through decreased production or unplanned down time. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia Pacific and South America (MMPT) has developed two systems for measuring mill load. The first is an acoustic system (SmartEarÖ) and the second is an online model-based charge estimation system. The aim of both systems is to facilitate better operation of grinding mills. SmartEarÖ performs analysis on an audio signal from the mill and allows each different frequency component to be viewed, analysed and used in process control for load estimation. By isolating different frequencies, SmartEarÖ can give an estimate of mill load. The online dynamic mill model uses measurable mill parameters (such as power) to predict the current total load. Kalman filtering can also be utilised to further increase the accuracy of the model. Both of MetsoÆs systems have been installed at BHP BillitonÆs Cannington mine to measure the load within their autogenous (AG) mill. In this paper, the methods of mill load estimation are reviewed and compared to the bearing pressure reading, which is the current method used by Cannington to control mill load. The redundant estimates of mill load provide increased confidence and consequently more robust grinding operation under a wide range of conditions.

The Century zinc-lead orebody was discovered in 1990 and contains sufficient reserves to sustain open cut mining at 5 Mtpa of ore for approximately 20 years. It is proposed to pipe mineral concentrate in slurry form 300 km from the mine to the port of Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The concentrate will be dewatered at Karumba before being transported off-shore to deeper water in a self-unloading shuttle vessel for transfer to export bulk carriers. The four main environmental issues that attracted attention during the impact assessment phase of the project were: the selection of Karumba as the export port, the use of a pipeline to transport concentrate, the risk of concentrate spillage in the marine environment, and aquifer drawdown in the vicinity of the mine. This paper discusses these issues with emphasis on the context of the relationship between the Pasminco Century Project and Gulf communities. Environmental safeguards are discussed, including those that arose out of the negotiations regarding Aboriginal native title.

Part of a four-year course in metallurgy, dealing with metallurgical process engineering, was designed for students to acquire knowledge and skill from physical science, metallurgy, process engineering, and social science. Principles of education, and guidelines obtained from a study of professional practice, indicated that students may learn effectively through a planned sequence of problem-solving exercises based on the diverse functions of metallurgists in industry. The more important characteristics of the curriculum and a few illustrations of the problems are included. An outline is given of the current procedures used to develop parts of the curriculum, and of the students' diffic- ulties and achievements.

A major advantage of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process is the conversion of sulphide sulphur in zinc concentrate to elemental sulphur during pressure leaching. Elemental sulphur can be recovered as a marketable byproduct by flotation of the leach residue, and melting and filtration of the sulphur flotation concentrate. The behaviour and deportment of sulphur during pressure leaching, flotation, and melting and filtration are discussed in this paper using data obtained from the treatment of a wide variety of zinc concentrates in the laboratory miniplant at the Sherritt Research Centre. The quality of the elemental sulphur byproduct and a process for purifying the sulphur are also Presented.

A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

This paper presents the numerical simulation of mine backfilling in underground stopes using three-dimensional discrete element modelling (DEM). The simulation predicts the forces exerted at the stope base and barricade with respect to time under free drained conditions. The results of the numerical simulation are validated using basic analytical solutions and advanced experimental tests involving a geotechnical centrifuge system. Overall, a good agreement between the present numerical simulations and the existing experimental and analytical results was found. The present model suggests that DEM is a promising computational tool to predict barricade pressure in underground mine stopes.CITATION:Hasan, A and Karrech, A, 2014. Hydrocyclones have widespread use as classifiers in applications such as mine fill preparation and coal preparation. A fundamental conflict often exists between recovery of all of the valuable material and maintaining the quality of the product. This conflict is a result of a portion of the feed material passing through the cyclone, effectively without undergoing any classification. This paper describes an investigation, undertaken as an undergraduate project in mining engineering at the University of NSW (Brook, 1994), into aspects of cyclones in which supplementary water injection is used in an attempt to reduce the amount of misplaced fine material reporting to the coarse product and hence improve the overall classification efficiency. In particular, the study concentrated on the effects of different modes of water injection. Two methods of introducing wash water into the cyclone body were investigated. A series of tests were performed on a laboratory hydrocyclone having provision for radial water injection at different levels through small orifices in the wall of the conical section, and a preliminary study was made of the performance of a novel cyclone in which the conical section had walls of a permeable polyethylene, permitting a uniform introduction of wash water over the entire surface.

The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The Hauraki Goldfield consists of a large number of volcanic-associated epithermal gold deposits within the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), North Island , New Zealand; it is the most accessible and most studied of the Southwest Pacific gold regions. The deposits occur generally as steeply dipping quartz veins and breccia sheets in faults and fractures.From a tectonic perspective, the CVZ is generally considered a Neogene convergent volcanic arc constructed under an extensional tectonic regime; the common tectonic setting for epithermal mineralisation. The gold deposits are mostly hosted in subaerial andesitic arc-type volcanic rocks. Temporally, however, mineralisation is associated with rhyolitic rocks of a bimodal volcanic suite that may represent a back-arc environment. Rifting and calderas may be important components of the latter regime, but this is not yet clear; the general structural framework controlling the location of CVZ gold deposits remains poorly understood. The decoppering of soft and hard leads was investigated by stirring in an open pot, using sulfur or sulfur plus pyrites, or sulfur plus pyrrhotite, as reagents. Lead samples taken during the process were analysed for copper. Dross samples were examined by optical micro- scope, SEM and XRD. Soft lead containing silver can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at low temperatures - close to 330¦C. Soft lead, whether containing silver or not, can be decoppered satisfactorily at higher temperatures by stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites. Then CuFeS2, Cu5FeS4 and PbS are formed, instead of Cu2S, CuS and PbS when using S alone. Hard lead containing tin can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at temperatures from 320-400¦C. When stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites, reversion of copper from dross to lead on prolonged stirring does not occur. Hard lead without tin can be decoppered with S plus pyrites better than with S alone, but the presence of antimony hinders the decoppering, which is less effective on lead with 5.5% Sb than with 2.3% Sb.

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.
