In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. The Permo-Triassic Bowen Basin developed during the final stages of the Tasman Orogenic Phase in eastern Australia. The basin has considerable economic value as a source of coal, natural gas and precious metals. The basin, which is of controversial origin, is preserved as a north-south trending, asymmetrical syncline bounded in places by faults. It is here interpreted as a retroarc foreland basin which developed on the landward (west) side of a continental arc associated with continent-ocean plate convergence. Initiation of the basin occurred via back-arc extension in Early Permian times, coincident with a phase of talc-alkaline arc volcanism. Early Permian, mostly marine sedimentation gave away to extensive coastal and alluvial plain depositional systems in Late Permian times, coincident with a resurgence of arc volcanism. Triassic sedimentation was almost entirely alluvial and coeval with westward propagation of thrust sheets from the eastern basin margin. Compressive tectonics climaxed in Middle to Late Triassic times, terminating sediment accumulation and uplifting the entire area.

It is generally known that Charters Towers was discovered by Mosman, Clarke and Fraser in 1871. However, the time was ripe, and these three were barely in front of others. There is one account that prospectors from Ravenswood visited the area months before but decided it was too far from water, and that one of them had told Mosman and party of the find. There is another account that Joe Larkins found the discoverers before they had registered any ground - this may explain Mosman's quick departure for Ravenswood.When the news spread, the rush was rapid, and there was soon a sizeable population: probably too many, as within twelve months the infant settlement was under considerable stress. First, the presiding Gold Commissioners had adopted "unusual and arbitary" interpretations of the Regulations, and many of the miners were aggrieved; Charters, the senior Commissioner, was accused of favouring moneyed interests, and of retiring ill whenever a brawl or confrontation occured. As a result, the law of the field soon became "the survival of the strong". Second, the settlers were, divided on where the main town should be: Millchester, near the water, or Charters Towers near the mines. Third, the discovery of gold at the Millchester Deep Lead in August, 1872 was followed by highly exaggerated accoants in_' the southern papers, apparently fabricated by local business speculators. The resulting rush resulted in hundreds of unlucky prospectors having to return or seek other fields. In that period two men were killed in squabbles over ground. To make matters worse, by October 1872 a drought had set in, water cost three pence a bucket, fodder was scarce, cartage expensive, and the price of crushing ore rose to thirty shillings per ton.

The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.

In the consideration of coal resources in this country one of the most neglected aspects and perhaps one of the most important is that of the geologic controls on coal formation. The composition, properties, thickness and distribution of the coal are all determined by geological factors. The extent and amounts of coal to be found in the South Auckland area have great economic significance, and are in the main considered here. Upheaval of the New Zealand geosyncline during the Rangitata Orogeny produced a system of parallel, north-south trending basement ridges and basins in the South Auckland area. A subtropical climate and relative tectonic stability allowed deep weathering of these mesozoic greywackes in the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary. Such weathering, markedly reduced the landscape relief, and provided vast supplied of very fine detritus for later sedimentation as the Waikato Coal Measures. This coal measure phase marked the beginnings of Tertiary  sedimentation in this region and represented a change from a sub-aerial weathering regime to a fresh water swamp environment.

The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

In 1989 Henry Fairlie wrote a cover story for The New York Republic, 'Fear of Living'. He noted, `The first Apollo space craft caught fire during a test on the launch pad. Three astronauts were killed, the nation was shocked and horrified, all the more because the screams and scrambles of the astronauts could be clearly heard'. After a brief delay in manned flights, the Apollo program resumed with strong public support; within 18 months, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Fairlie contrasts the Apollo tragedy to the 1986 Challenger disaster. `The prevailing mood in America so panicked NASA that it took almost three years to send up another shuttle', he observed. `In 19 years between these tragedies, the idea that our individual lives and the nation's life can and should be risk-free has grown to be an obsession threatening to create an unbuoyant and uninventive society.' Taking risks is a normal part of our daily routine. The act of living involves minute-by-minute decision-making focused on survival through the practical management of risks. The act of breathing exposes each individual to the risk of infection while the act of crossing the road could almost be considered suicidal. We deal with these constant threats by observing simple rules of hygiene, safety or what may be labelled as common sense. The rules of community, designed to minimise risk in society, can at times lose focus and result in the imposition of schemes that have a far greater cost than the issues from which they protect. Effective management of risk, whether in the community or a business is about awareness and balance and the elimination of unacceptable risk. Risk cannot be eliminated from our lives or our working environment. However it can be managed if it is properly understood, monitored and controlled. The purpose of my presentation today is not to provide a comprehensive technical risk inventory but to capture the essence of risk and the application of management strategies designed to deal with it in a positive fashion. The basis of our differential financial reward system is risk. The key to successful management is to deal with the downside risks in such a fashion that the benefits of enterprise are not eliminated. The key question any investor must consider is `can the major risks assQciated with a venture be managed or eliminated while retaining a greater proportion of upside potential'. The answer to this question is the ultimate value an investor would assign to any project. In reviewing the relevance of risk to our industry the range of papers to be presented today provide examples of how management deals with specific components of risk. In each case the value of the business has been enhanced by the practical application of balanced risk management. The ultimate success of the industry depends very much on this concept as it also provides a public showcase upon which we are judged. Therefore, from all perspectives the effective management of risk is a cornerstone from which to build a stable and progressive mining industry.

A test model is presented for the simulation of dewatering by gas injection of a porous aquifer above longwall workings. A finite difference model used in the oil industry was modified to match the underground mining conditions. The model is suitable to cope with the problem of dewatering reservoirs of low transmissivity. After comparing more versions, it has been concluded, that the investigated dewatering method can be proposed under special hydrogeological conditions only.

Mining engineering, metallurgy and minerals-related geology have proud traditions and are essential professions to support a safe and sustainable minerals industry. However, the future of these professions is under threat. The courses that produce such graduates are disappearing worldwide and the number of graduates available to enter the industry has been falling in English speaking countries for at least a decade. It is unlikely that this problem will be remedied by æsupply and demandÆ. Instead, some active intervention is required.

Botanical exploration has identified many plant species that naturally accumulate very high concentrations of elements, particularly heavy metals. The enormous potential applications of some of these species to remove metals from soil (phytoextraction) are slowly being realised. The discovery of hyperaccumulation has resulted in considerable research into applications for removing contaminants (phytoremediation) or more importantly, in the context of this discussion, for commercially æfarmingÆ metals (phytomining) from metal-bearing soils. Currently published phytoextraction models estimate Ni yields using Berkheya coddii (a South African nickelophyte) are approximately $US 750 ha-1, excluding the cost of processing. Research indicates that B. coddii will also accumulate significant amounts of Co, resulting in a considerable increase in the value of the crop. Modification of the substrate by acidification, fertilisation and/or chelation indicate fruitful avenues for improving this yield by increasing the extractability of the target element, elevating biomass production rates and/or rendering other contained heavy metals extractable. Plant uptake of more insoluble elements, such as Au, may be induced in many plant species using chemical compounds. These chelates applied to the soil, form soluble complexes with poorly soluble metals forcing them into the soil solution. Plants may then accumulate these metal complexes through transpiration. Research has achieved foliar Au concentrations of 78 mg kg-1 in Iberis intermedia, 56 mg kg-1 in Brassica juncea and 9 mg kg-1 in B. coddii (on a dry weight basis). Therefore in theory B. coddii could phytomine a soil containing modest concentrations of Ni, Co and Au to yield 116 kg Ni, 36 kg Co and over 6 oz Au ha-1 at a current value of $US 4000. Root crops have also shown promise in chelate assisted Au accumulation (eg 6.8 mg kg-1 in Beta vulgaris and 118.5 mg kg-1 in Raphanus sativus). Phytoextraction, in its varied applications, is rapidly coming of age as a technology having considerable potential for application in environmental science and the minerals industry. Phytotechnology employs unique plant biochemical behaviours in the rhizosphere, driven by the sunÆs energy, to seek out and concentrate low levels of heavy metals at very low cost.

In the past ten years or so there has been a renewed interest worldwide in the processing of refractory gold ores. The Archean province of Western Australia contains both numerous and major gold deposits, and has a long history in the development and practise of treating refractory ores (eg Blaskett and Woodcock, 1953). Depletion of shallow oxidised ores in recent years has re-focused attention on deeper sulphidic ores, and as a consequence has renewed interest in treatment methods for those ores which are refractory. Mineralogical factors he at the heart of reasons as to why these ores are refractory, and are the key to designing and improving treatment options in the longer term. This paper presents an overview of mineralogical factors that are relevant to the processing of refractory gold ores in the Archean of Western Australia. It is based on a number of research projects and other work on a variety of gold deposits, mainly in the Eastern Goldfields region, carried out over the past five years or so.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1:100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

Drill and blast excavation in underground mining and. civil engineering projects has grad- ually given ground to mechanical boring of tun- nels, shafts and raises during the past twenty years. The use of.boring equipment must today be considered significant and wide spread al- though comprising only a very small percent of total underground excavation. The encroachment of mechanical boring into the domain of blast- ing has been by slow incremental advances. There have been few, if any major breakthroughs in this development, and none can be foreseen in the next decade. After 1990 it is possible that scientific. development will provide some form of breakthrough in rock breaking, but this is so uncertain that it should have little relevance to planners in the 1980's. A more near term view of the future, con- centrating on the next five to ten years, has lead to the conclusion that significant im- provements will be seen in tunnel borers for poor ground conditions. A universal machine will be developed that converts from a dry hard rock machine to a closed slurry type machine for passing through fault zones with unstable crushed rock and water. Two other machines have been described as alternate designs for tunnelling in squeez- ing ground conditions.

The commercial outcomes from new mining projects or brownfields expansions often fall short of feasibility study forecasts because of technical under-performance. This paper: reviews past feasibility study performance; identifies the key drivers of underperformance; and proposes actions that can be taken to manage the risk of underperformance. There have been a number of published reviews of feasibility study performance since the 1970s. The results of these studies are summarised together with recent unpublished data. Key drivers of underperformance include inadequate metallurgical testing, simultaneously pushing a number of project parameters beyond comfortable limits and a failure to recognise the linkage between mining rate and head grade. Actions can be taken during the data acquisition phase and during the feasibility study to manage project technical risks. These generally require a more flexible approach to study management than can be achieved under a ælump sumÆ contract.

A methodology is described to integrate heap leaching into a CIP operation. The paper firstly describes what is meant by a 'systems approach'. A broad view of the objectives of integration of heap leaching into CIP is given, followed by the components of the system, and then a description of the methodology for integration. The seven stages of integration are given as determination of distribution of gold, sampling, metallurgical testwork, conceptual study, pilot heap operation, pit modelling and pit optimisation. The final result is a series of optimised curves which determine the maximum value of the orebody, and the optimum cut-over grade from CIP to heap leaching.

Against a background of deeper pits, the introduction of prestripping fleets and the need for closer control of operating costs (especially the waste removal component), Australian coal operations utilising draglines have in recent years become increasingly focused on:1. assessment of more efficient excavation methods; and2. application of explosive products and initiation systems which offer more flexibility than ever before.Additionally, developments in blast performance assessment techniques and equipment, and computer modelling and excavation monitoring systems have provided an improved opportunity to design a blast to achieve a desired profile suited to the excavation equipment and Sequence.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. Major ions, d18O and d2H and Carbon-13 concentrations in groundwater from 30 bores near an open pit iron ore mine were used to better understand the chemical evolution of groundwater in the aquifer. The relatively depleted d18O and d2H isotopes of groundwater from various depths suggest that groundwater is recharged from intense rainfall events, with little evaporative effect. The 300 to 500 mg/L increase of major ions relative to that of rainfall is due to evapotranspiration of rainfall during recharge. Geochemical mass balance modelling suggests that the evapotranspiration of rainfall during infiltration through the unsaturated zone varies over six fold from 20 to 130. This coupled with the dissolution of CO2 from the unsaturated zone and partial dissolution of carbonates and gypsum from Tertiary sediments and carbonates from the Wittenoom Formation accounts for the current major ion, d18O and d2H distribution in groundwater. Despite the relatively dissected morphology and steep hydraulic gradient the results of this study highlight the dominance of vertical flow relative to horizontal flow. The study also shows the dominance of rapid recharge by significant rainfall events as an important component of the water budget for east Pilbara aquifers.

This paper describes some experiences in the design of flotation reagent schemes for the efficient flotation of complex gold ores containing free gold and/or gold associated with easily flotable sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and bornite. Historically, the design of gold flotation reagent schemes has been based primarily on experiences using high dosage levels of water soluble charged collectors such as xanthates and dithiophosphates and carefully controlled regions of pH. This approach has been effective with gold associated with complex sulphide minerals, in particular gold associated with iron sulphides such as pyrite. An alternative two-stage reagent approach is presented that is applicable to certain types of gold ores. This approach involves using very small dosages of uncharged water insoluble collectors at natural ore pH followed by a modified bulk flotation reagent approach for the second stage. The reasons for utilising this approach, when applicable, are discussed and illustrated with examples.
