The production of approximately 550 000 tonnes of æwhiteÆ or chrysotile asbestos fibre between 1972 and 1983 at the Woodsreef Mine in New South Wales left behind 24 million tonnes of tailings and 75 million tonnes of waste rock and overburden. The Woodsreef Magnesium Project is designed to extract the 23 per cent magnesium content of the tailings to produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys, the latter with aluminium from the New South Wales smelters. Further value will be added to the tailings waste with the downstream production of magnesium alloy sheets and cast products for the transportation, electronics and other consumer goods industries. The mine opened in 1918 and closed in 1983 becoming derelict. There has been minimal expenditure on rehabilitation compared with that recommended in reports commissioned by the New South Wales Government. The tailings dump has been designated æasbestos wasteÆ by the EPA and will be eliminated through the magnesium refinery process of the Project with the dissolution of the remaining chrysotile fibres. The benign waste from the refinery process will consist principally of silica with some iron. Significant energy savings are expected from innovative new processing technology, in the alloy formation and in the application of the light weight, cast and sheet metal products, particularly in the transportation industries. Globally, there are very large resources of similar tailings with hundreds of years of useful productive lives that could be converted into the metal of the 21st Century, magnesium, and its alloys, to assist pollution and greenhouse gas reduction from transportation industries. No new mining and minimal feedstock preparation is required. Unlike potential producers using carbonate rocks such as magnesite and dolomite that have to be mined, the asbestos tailings composed principally of non-fibrous serpentinite do not contain any carbon dioxide.

The gold deposits of Kalgoorlie are the most important on the Precambrian shield of Australia. The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) /Calgary Coal Research Laboratory and the National Research Council in Ottawa established a joint working research group with industry to develop and test various computer models for application in surface coal mining operations in western Canada.The first part of the paper deals with the problems the group experienced during the past two years especially having model specification and requirements defined and understand site management practices.The second part of the paper deals with site specific development of general mine model for TransAlta Utilities' Highvale Mine in Alberta. Described here are the development of an interactive truck/shovel model for their three pit operation, selection and application of dragline model for tandem operation with the extended bench method, criteria for operational model of the five seams operation with selec-tive mining approach.

An enormous capital outlay is required to bring a new deep level (¦ 4 000 m deep) Witwatersrand gold mine into production. In addition, future mining methods must cater for rapidly rising working costs of which labour costs make up the largest portion. South African mining engineers are therefore being forced to challenge accepted design and valuation principles when planning these high risk ventures. New mining methods must be sought to satisfy the ever increasing need for productivity improvement. The technological problems posed by such changes cover a wide range of disciplines. Aspects of shaft design and configuration, besides being examined in the light of productivity, must also consider the rock mechanics implications at depth. Mining methods must anticipate and prepare for extremely hostile conditions due to seis- micity and virgin rock temperatures.

The derelict Lake George Mine is located at Captains Flat in NSW, acommunity of approximately 450, which lies some 43 km southeast ofQueanbeyan. It straddles the Molonglo River, which flows toQueanbeyan and thence the nationÆs capital, Canberra. Catastrophictailings dam failures in 1939 and again in 1943 resulted in the transportand dispersion of thousands of tonnes of sulfidic wastes downstream,with terminal settling in Lake Burley Griffin, in Canberra. The mine wasclosed in 1962, and major rehabilitation in 1996 - 1997 addressed the riskof further collapses, and reduced water flow into the underground mine.Nevertheless, acid mine drainage from the mine, and seepages ofcontaminated water from the capped tailings dumps continue to pollutethe Molonglo River for some 30 km downstream.Environmentally, the highest contributor to the total contaminant loadof the river is the Main Adit Spring. This was shown to be a constantgroundwater-driven acidic flow, with contaminant generation resultingalmost entirely from the ingress of gaseous oxygen into the undergroundworkings. Long term remediation may be possible at source, by pumpingreducing gases into the sealed mine, but the probability of thistechnology succeeding to the required degree is yet to be demonstrated. For at least the medium term, treatment of contaminated water flow(s)will be required to achieve any of the water quality targets that may beapplicable to the river. Three methodologies were short listed, but anumber of strategic uncertainties remain, which the NSW Derelict MinesProgram will address. Future risk arising from long-term contaminantrelease by the treatment wastes must be considered. Appropriate data,and realistic long-term performance parameters regarding the relativestabilities of water treatment sludges are scarce, and make properevaluation of competing technologies problematic.

Hydrothermal scheelite precipitated in fault-veins at Paradise, Bonnie Jean, Davidson's and Glenorchy mines display chemical variability involving REE patterns that are transitional between two end-member types. Type I is a MREE-enriched pattern with no or a small positive Eu anomaly. Type II is a flat to MREE-depleted pattern with a strong positive Eu anomaly. The chemical inhomogeneity of these scheelites can be explained by a model of fractional precipitation of REE, with preferential removal of MREE from the fluid during precipitation of scheelite. Irrespective of the mechanism responsible for scheelite precipitation, the source of dissolved constituents is different for scheelites from the Paradise Mine. Bonnie Jean, Davidson's and Glenorchy scheelites formed from LREE-enriched fluids whereas Paradise scheelites precipitated from fluids that were lower in LREE. These inferred fluid characteristics cannot be linked unambiguously to specific source rocks in the region, but could suggest that scheelite deposited in the Paradise fault-vein reflects a more mafic source of REE possibly greenschists, whereas the REE in scheelite from the other mines suggest a more felsic source.

Following unprecedented high market prices for tin and gold in 1980, significant advances in both mining technology and geological knowledge took place in northeast Queensland. These led to a rapid growth in mining activity. Production of these traditional metals reached levels comparable to those of the heyday of mining activity at the turn of the century.Although tin and tungsten prices have since collapsed, the geological knowledge gained and significant discoveries made during the boom, have created a potential for mine development when prices rise again. For other discoveries which are not workable because of treatment problems, future technological advances are required to raise their potential.

A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

Expertise has been developed locally to a high level during the last decade which has contributed to the success of many recent mining projects. The services available'cover the whole spectrum from the evaluation of ore reserves, through feasibility study and financial evaluation to design, project management and commissioning. Using these services effectively and economically is an objective which client and consultant both must pursue but which is not always achieved. The Lower Palaeozoic Woolomin Association is composed of chert and jasper (often radiolarian), siliceous argillite, the mafic volcanics with associated hyaloclastites, and occasional greywacke and limestone lenses. Several "Cyprus-type", conformable pyritic copper (+/- zinc and cobalt} sulphide lenses are spatially related to individual mafic volcanic units and manganiferous chert and/or jasper. The Association has been interpreted to represent an oceanic crustal remnant generated either in an island arc environment (Herbert, 1981) or at a divergent plate boundary (Scheibner and Glen, 1972; Leitch, 1974a, 1975) later to be obducted, or tectonically emplaced, into continental crust; the adjacent Peel Fault was considered to be the palaeo-obduction zone (Scheibner and Glen, 1972) and the associated alpine-type mafic/ultramafic complex, an ophiolite (Crook and Felton,1975).

The extinction of zinc from steelmaking dusts has been studied with a laboratory scale reduction-vapour deposition (RVD) process in the absolute pressure and temperature ranges of 13 - 1300 Pa and 1333 - 1513 K respectively. This process consists of pre-reduction of iron oxide by carbonaceous agent, carbothermic reduction of zinc oxide under reduced pressure to produce zinc deposits and subsequent re-evaporation of the deposits to liquedify the zinc. In the RVD, the gas mixture of Zn and CO quenched from the hot zone is separated into Zn deposit and CO which is transferred to the pumping system. The Zn are a layer of fine metallic zinc powders accumulated on the cold wall and removed to the vacuum distillation chamber. The experimental works have been carried out according to the following items: carbothennic reduction of zinc oxide under vacuum, carbothermic reduction o zinc ferrite under vacuum, and 3. distillation of the Zn deposits. It has been concluded from these experimental results that the recovery of metallic zinc from the EAF dusts is successful by this process, and a new concept for a practical zinc winning process has been proposed.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northern Paparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

The Sinclair Nickel Project, wholly owned by Xstrata Nickel Australasia (XNA), includes an underground mine, a concentrator, a village, an all-weather airstrip and associated mine infrastructure. The operation is located 70 km north of Leonora in the prospective and historically productive eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. Xstrata Nickel has successfully developed the Sinclair deposit into a 350 kt/a operation since its discovery in November 2005, with contained nickel metal production to date in excess of 10 600 t, of which 5500 t is from the underground operation.The narrow, continuous, medium-grade Sinclair nickel sulfide deposit accessed by the Phoenix Decline has a shallow 15¦ - 20¦ plunge that is approximately 1000 m long down dip and open at depth to the north. The flat plunge and low-grade nature of the orebody presents challenges regarding the amount of horizontal waste development that can be economically excavated, which in turn affects ventilation, egress, mine services and diamond drilling.The mineralisation is hosted between an ultra mafic hanging wall and a basalt footwall and is being mined using a bottom up, sublevel open stoping method. The stopes are retreated to a central access, filling voids in the process with waste mullock where possible and using cemented mullock fill where end exposure is required. Tight filling the flat dipping hanging wall has proved to be challenging given the angle of repose for the waste mullock fill is steeper than the angle of the hanging wall.Reconciliations of mine performance against the original feasibility study show positive changes and operational optimisations enabling Sinclair to achieve its mining targets in a safe, sustainable and economic manner. A selection of Australian washed coal samples was examined to determine the effect of sample hydrophobicity (rank) and particle size on froth stability in the flotation process. The results indicate distinct rank-based variations in froth volume and stability for flotation tests conducted without the use of collector, over a series of particle size distributions.High-rank coals showed a greater tendency to generate stable, high-volume froths than coals of lower rank. Implications for circuit design and operation are outlined.

The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.

Epicentres of recent shallow earthquakes in the region (3-12¦S, 126-150`E) were plotted to identify the various plate boundaries in the region, in particular the southernmost one marking the northern edge of the Australian plate. New and published fault plane solutions were examined to determine the style of faulting and state of stress along the Australian plate boundary. From east to west the boundary is first a subduction zone along the Solomon Islands, then a spreading centre across the Solomon Sea, a zone of compression and left lateral strike slip along the Papua Peninsula, almost pure thrusting across the centre of New Guinea and lastly left lateral strike silo through Irian Taya to the outer Banda Arc. The principal stress is very consistent, trending NW to NNW in a near horizontal plane, from the triple junction of the Pacific, Solomon Sea and Australian plates in the east to the Banda Sea in the west. Only along southern Solomon Sea plate margin which is a divergent boundary, is the stress different in type and direction.
