Mineral resource and ore reserve estimation is a challenging and demanding field, requiring application of professional knowledge, skill and experience of the highest order. If the many potential hazards and pitfalls are to be avoided however, there are two other requirements which are of equal, if not greater importance:

In this paper, it is shown that the higher the pre-activation concentration of copper ions in pulp, the larger the adsorption amounts of copper ions and xanthate on arsenopyrite surface, and the better the arsenopyrite flotability in strong alkaline medium. On arsenopyrite pre-activated with cupric ions, the xanthate adsorption density in strong alkaline medium is approximately equivalent to that of cupric ions. It is therefore concluded that an amount of copper ions adsorb on arsenopyrite surface first, and then an amount of xanthate can (and only can) adsorb dependently on the surface active sites produced by these adsorbed copper ions on the mineral, so that arsenopyrite is kept rather flotable and is hardly separated from pyrite even in very strong alkaline medium. Selectively wiping out the surface copper active sites on arsenopyrite is the key point of successful separation of pyrite from arsenopyrite. According to this theory, a new 'SZLI' (know-how) method was recommended to satisfactorily deal with the difficult separation.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma.. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these "primary" components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

Complex ores, transportation problems, and the Philippine Insurrection halted operations. Ultimate success went to American firms, though Frank Karuth's Philippines Mineral Syndicate had pioneered the field.

Process control applications to the unit operations in both the Lead and Copper Smelters are reviewed. The basic aim of this control is to smooth plant inputs to produce an output of consistent quality in terms of chemical composition, temperature and physical properties. Most effort has been put into the process bottlenecks, namely in the process baghouse of the Lead Smelter and in the Copper Smelter reverberatory furnaces. The method of approach is discussed, firstly extensive plant measurement and data logging plus identification of factors which most affect the unit operation and secondly control of these factors to smooth out variations. This has been possible due to the development in-house of on-line instruments to measure the critical variables and the external use of computers for plant control. Some of these instrument developments are also briefly discussed.

The reduction of an ilmenite concentrate with coal at 1000, 1050 and 1100¦C was investigated using thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis of the product. The effects of temperature, coal particle size, addition of ferric chloride and preheating of the concentrate in argon on the reduction kinetics and mechanism were determined. The rate of reduction increased significantly with temperature and was enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The morphology of the iron was primarily determined by the degree of weathering of the particle. Significant coarsening of iron was obtained in the dense particles by the addition of ferric chloride. The sequence of reduction and the enhancement in the rate of reduction by preheating the concentrate in an inert atmosphere are discussed.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dykelstock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

The correct assessment and understanding of geotechnical conditions is fundamental to mine design and, hence, successful (safe and efficient) mine planning, design and operations. However, this assessment and understanding is simply not possible unless there is a sound appreciation of the geology of the project. This paper addresses geological uncertainty in mine engineering and its communication, and shows that a mining project that does not take geology properly into account in the engineering phase is fraught. Uncertainty levels become excessive, which leads to hazards and consequential risks in design and operations in terms of both safety and efficiency. Several examples, both positive and negative, are provided to make the point. The paper concludes that mining geologists must become more overtly cognisant of the influence of geology on mine engineering. Equally importantly, mining (and geotechnical) engineers must communicate better with their geological colleagues to ensure that they (the engineers) have a clear understating of the geological issues affecting their operations. The engineers must know how to ask the right questions of the geologists. Engineers who do not understand and take account of geology in their designs and operations are failing the expectations of stakeholders.

Most base and precious metal mineralisation in the Gympie Province is genetically linked to intrusion of branitoids of Late Permian to Late Triassic age. Most lodes are hydrothermal quartz and quartz-calcite veins at intrusive contacts, within either the granitoids themselves or the country rocks, and commonly associated with dykes. Other types of intrusive related deposits are disseminated porphyry type Cu, base metals in skarns, and Mo in quartz pipes and veins. Although the Late Permian-Late Triassic granitic intrusives can be subdivided in terms of age, it is not yet possible to relate deposits of particular metals or styles to granites of a specific age on a regional scale.Some significant mineralisation is not associated with granitic intrusions. This includes the Gympie goldfield, by far the largest known deposit within the Gympie Province. Gold occurs in quartz veins crosscutting Early Permian volcaniclastic sediments and also in NW striking fault zones. The source of the mineralisation is unknown. Gold and silver also occur in epithermal, disseminated and breccia hosted deposits within Late Triassic continental volcanics. Epithermal Hg mineralisation at Kilkivan may be related to Early-Middle Triassic volcanics.

The Golden Valley Volcanic Centre has been recently interpreted as being a combination diatreme breccia pipe and rhyo-dacite flow dome complex of Permo-Carboniferous age that intrudes basement granitoids and sediments of Ordovician-Devonian age. Exceptionally good exposure at the Centre has enabled the relationships between different lithologies to be determined. This, along with petrological studies, has led to a detailed understanding of the geological environment in which the complex formed. Gold, silver and base metal mineralisation have been recently shown to be associated with the Marginal Breccia at the perimeter of the diatreme. Comparisons have been made between the geology and mineralisation in this system and several similar diatremes which also contain gold-base metal sulphide mineralisation.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. Faced with rising costs and lower metal prices, several Ontario base metal sulphide mines have changed their method of mining to vertical crater retreat mining. This is a bulk mining method that utilises large diameter holes and mines successive cuts remotely by blasting and cratering the bottom of the drill holes. The orebody is mined from the bottom up. The method in turn has required a change in materials handling to cope with the greatly increased productivity.   This paper presents an overview of vertical crater retreat mining in the Sudbury area using examples from several producing mines. The paper reviews the history of vertical crater retreat mining, various methods of applying vertical crater retreat layouts, the development of in-the-hole drills capable of drilling the large diameter holes required, methods of explosives loading and blasting to achieve the required cratering effect, methods of ground support including backfill placement, and the ore loading equipment presently being utilised including remote control load-haul-dump units and continuous loaders.   The safety aspect of vertical crater retreat mining has been of concern, and was the focus of a provincial inquiry. The benefits in improved safety are demonstrated through an analysis of various records kept by the mines and provincial agencies.   Future trends can now be envisaged, particularly in relation to deep mining. Some experimental work which could have practical applications, is described.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. Like almost any other 19th century mining area, the West Coast saw its 20th century scrapping era when machinery which had been installed in seemingly inaccessible places was somehow dragged out again. Fortunately there were some spots so remote that they defied even the most zealous of these pioneering recyclers. One of these was Big River, a mining locality in a rugged landscape straddling the headwaters of the Grey and Inangahua rivers. As a result there remains an internationally important collection of mining equipment including a poppet head, two steam winding engines, a pair of boilers, part of an aerial cableway with its loading system, and remnants of a stamp battery along with its associated gold smelter, cyanide tanks and zinc boxes. There are also assorted building remains associated with 60 years of mining and settlement. Since their abandonment in 1942, these relics have all somehow survived a further half century in a far from favourable climate with two or three metres of rain a year, frequent snowfalls and hot summer temperatures. The rate of decay during the past few years has been alarming.

Lake Kopiago is located some 71km northwest of Tari in the Southern Highlands Province and lies on the northern edge of the Papuan Fold Belt. The area is underlain by middle Miocene carbonate and fine grained clastic sediments intruded by late Miocene hornblende gabbros.Two mineral deposits occur to the south of Lake Kopiago. These are the Bisamu gold prospect and the Wunaki zinc-lead gossan.The Bisamu deposit consists of a calcic skarn assemblage which is geochemically anomalous in gold, silver, copper, zinc, cobalt, bismuth and tellurium. The prograde mineral assemblage includes garnet, clino-pyroxene and epidote whereas the retrograde assemblage includes epidote, quartz, actinolite and chlorite. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulphide with minor pyrite and marcasite and trace chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Minor magnetite is also present. The Bisamu skarn shows many of the features typical of gold-skarn type mineral-isation.

The Ok Tedi open pit mine will have final wall heights in excess of 750m. The behaviour of these excavated slopes will be influenced by the presence of numerous defects. This paper discusses the identification of possible failure mechanisms within the pit walls based on mapped fault and joint data. Results from analyses using these data have formed the basis for the ultimate pit design.

Hydrocyclones are widely used in both mining and various industrial sectors. Considerable fundamental research work on the modelling of hydrocyclone classifiers has been carried out through the past 25 years. Based on the similarity principle, the hydrocyclone classification was taken as a whole physical process and a group of similarity numbers were obtained with the help of dimensional analysis in this paper. Then, the functional dependences of the similarity numbers have been established. The variables optimisation was carried out with the multiple objectives linear planning programs developed in this study.

Copper was first produced in Australia in 1844, at the Kapunda Mine in South Australia, and, by 18i>0, production exceeded 2,000 tons of copper a year. Output increased ,steadily, reaching a peak of 14,00Qo tons a year in 1867 and 1868, when the Burra Burra and Kapunda Mines in South Australia and the Peak Downs Moine at Clermont, Queensland, were at the height of their production. At this period, Australian copper formed a considerable percentage of the world's supply, its output equalling, for a short time, that of the United States. Production declined to between 3,000 and 4,000 tons a year after the closing of' these three mines between 18717 and 1879, and, at this stage, the Australian output came chiefly from the Wallatoo and Moonta mines in South Australia. About 19000, it began to rise again, with the extension of the railway to the copper fields of Chillagoe and Cloncurry, and, between 1905 and 1912, was at its greatest, with a maximum of 47,774 tons of copper in 1912. During this period, Australia contributed 4,7 per cent. of the world's annual production, and ranked among the six major copper-producing countries of the world (Table 1).

From an examination of the processes used in extractive metallurgy a hierarchy of process aims is identified, these aims are separation, compound formation,, metal production and metal purification. The application of this methodology to process flowsheet development is described.

The Rum Jungle mine was operated by Territory Enterprises Pty Ltd who mined uranium on behalf of the Australian Government with operations spanning the period from 1953 to the final closure of the mine in 1971. In addition to the extraction of uranium from the open cut pits, copper, manganese and lead were mined and processed at Rum Jungle. During the latter part of the operation, and after the closure of the mine, environmental studies were carried out which were aimed at determining the causes of the pollution at Rum Jungle and identifying a rehabilitation strategy for the mine site. These studies identified sources of heavy metal and acid pollution and proposed a rehabilitation strategy which consisted of 1. recontour, construct impervious covers and controlled surface drainage on, and revegetate three overburden heaps,
