BHP Billiton’s Area C iron ore operation has been in production since 2003. During 2010, below water table mining in the Marra Mamba formation commenced and dewatered ore has been successfully processed through the plant.The ability to mine below water table material increases reserves. Pits can be dewatered using a combination of ex-pit and in-pit bores. Critically it is important to allow suffi cient lead time to dewater. For Area C, in-pit bores yield the most water which presents challenges in every day operations when mining around bores. Operationally there are steep learning curves in obtaining equipment, training personnel and setting up infrastructure. Core risks include lifting, refuelling and maintaining gensets. The pipework, extraction and re-establishment work can be very manual.The challenges include blasting, mining, stockpiling, processing, water balance and disposal. Maximising up time on bores whilst minimising impacts to blast practices have evolved. Blast practices now align bores to the edge of patterns. Protecting bores have evolved from stemming bores with rock and re-drilling to using gas bags which require no drills. Based on moisture and material properties, mining of dewatered material can be categorised into three groups:1. normal,2. sheeting, and3. sheeting and top loading.Ore can go straight to the plant ore to drying pads where it takes between one and three months to drain.Stock management of these piles is important to ensure efficiency of the plant. Rules have been established for blending wet material to maintain feed capacity and some modifications to plants have been made. Dewatering of pits poses a challenge for water use. Initially turkey’s nests were established to capture water and use for dust suppression. As water abstraction has increased methods of management include using exhausted pits for storage and evaporators. Managed Aquifer recharge and use in potable water are being considered. An over arching coordination of the capacity and use are required.Important elements in dewatering include:• capacity models,• capital,• long to short planning,• day to day coordination, and • water level monitoring and balances. The Wisemans Creek derelict mine site is located in native forest approximately 150 km west of Sydney. Mean annual rainfall at Bathurst, 20 km to the north, is 634 mm and reasonably distributed throughout the year, with slightly more rain falling in the summer months. Evaporation is 1350 mm per annum and considerably exceeds rainfall in all but the winter months (May to August). This results in a water deficit for much of the year. Groundwater is relatively deep, as it has not been intercepted in the shallow open cut workings. Investigation of the groundwater regime was beyond the scope of the current study. Mining has taken place on the site for almost 100 years, during which copper, talc and gold have been sequentially extracted from surface and shallow underground workings. The site is now characterised by the presence of small open pits, unprotected shafts and adits, mullock heaps and an unconfined tailing deposit from a small cyanidation plant. From a distance, the mine area is visible because of two distinct steep bare slopes below the relatively small mine workings and mullock heaps. The mining area was characterised in terms of its environmental, safety and heritage issues. Mullock from the early copper mining was found to be acid forming and leachate from this, combined with clearing of timber, has most likely resulted in death of vegetation below the heaps. The mullock also contains elevated concentrations of heavy metals. The gold tailing is apparently benign and not acid forming, although there are indications of oxidation and acid formation in the derelict gold open cut. Oxidation of the acid forming mullock still appears to be taking place even after being exposed to the atmosphere for at least 50 years, resulting in continued contamination of the slopes below the heaps with heavy metals. The concentrations of metals decreases with distance below the mullock heaps and also is confined to the ground surface the further away from the mullock, providing further evidence to support the theory that the mullock is the source of contamination. Despite this continuing contamination, its spread beyond the immediate mining area appears to have been limited because of the relatively dry climate, with only intermittent rainfall and stream flows. Irregular storm flows in the nearby creek could also have washed any contaminated soil some distance from the site and beyond the area investigated in this study. Remediation of the site and restoration of vegetation on the bare slopes will therefore depend on elimination of the source of acid and metals. Options for remediation, focussing on minimising cost by retaining the materials on or close to the site, are identified. The volume of the open cuts would appear to be close to that required for burial of the acid-forming mullock, thereby removing the source of surface contamination while keeping it above the groundwater table. However, implementation of this remediation plan will depend on the availability of funds to undertake the work through the New South Wales GovernmentÆs Derelict Mines Program.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. The seminar had its origins in an Inquiry into the Box Flat Disaster and one of the conclusions from this Inquiry was that there should be a better dissemination of technical knowledge and the results of research work. As a result of this Mr. W. Roach, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in Queensland and Mr. R. Menzies, Chief Inspector of Coal Mines in N.S.W. had a meeting to see how this could be done. They concluded that it would be difficult to have the sort of regular meetings that would be possible where distance was not significant, but a seminar would be a major step toward satisfying this particular conclusion of this Inquiry. As a consequence, Mr. Roach, who is on the Committee of the Southern Queensland Branch of the Institute, suggested when the Branch programme was being planned this year that a meeting of this type should be held, and the Mine Fires Seminar which was held today is the result. We have received a great deal of support in arranging the Seminar. First and foremost I wish to acknowledge support from the National Coal Board in United Kingdom. Not only have they released Dr. Willett for a period of six to seven weeks to visit Australia, conduct the Seminar and give a series of lectures in various areas through the country, they have also borne the brunt of the financial support that has been necessary to make this possible. This work provides a comparison between the most commonly used classification equipment in the treatment of minerals - hydrocyclones and spiral classifiers - considering their applications and costs. Although in use for decades in the mining industry, spiral classifiers have lost a lot of their importance due to the development of cyclones. This trend, however, is now being reversed, and in the last few years there has been an increasing interest in spiral classifiers, in view of their advantages over cyclones, such as: ò possibility of obtaining more thickened solids; ò less by-pass; ò great durability; ò lower operating cost. This work approaches the different aspects related to the installation, operation and costs of maintenance of these machines, giving a critical comparison of the involved costs.

A survey of derelict and active alluvial tin and sapphire mines in the Emmaville area of northern N.S.W. as the first step in a pro- gramme of similar surveys to be undertaken throughout the State by the State Pollution Control Commission is presented. Thirty nine individual mine sites in the study area were included in the survey and an assessment made of the current level of impact on the environment at each site by assigning values of "magnitude" and "importance" to a number of impacting factors. Results are pre- sented in matrix form and mine sites ranked in order of impact "importance". Examples of alluvial tin, underground tin/arsenic and alluvial sapphire operations are discussed in detail and rehabilitation programmes proposed for implementation.

B Lens Main is a scheelite orebody with an average dip of approximately 15¦ and thickness ranging from 1.5 to 6.0 m. The orebody is overlain by a banded section of ore and waste which tends to slab off if left unsupported. It was originally planned to mine a large portion of this orebody by room and pillar methods, with existing diesel trackless equipment. This, however, proved unsuitable for a number of reasons and the smaller scale method of slot stoping with hand machines and scrapers was employed. The following major problems were encountered. 1. The method was new to the mine and the work force, and had to be commenced quickly using existing or easily obtainable equipment. This is gradually being overcome by training, modification of procedures and introduction of more suitable equipment. 2. The slabbing from the hanging wall had to be controlled, either by support or by mining this low grade section and accepting the resultant dilution. This has been approached in a number of ways, depending on conditions and the method will have to be further modified as different conditions are encountered in new areas.

Geologists use large data sets and spend many hours and much computing time modelling the distribution of minerals throughout a rock mass. Significant investments in drilling, assaying and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) are made before sophisticated geostatistical techniques are applied to the collected data. A large amount of research has been done in this field such that the ore control model is a reasonably accurate reflection of the mineral that is actually in the ground. However, after all this effort, the mining engineers then work just as diligently to blast the in situ rock mass to a particle size that can be efficiently handled and further reduced by downstream comminution processes. In open cut mines, this invariably requires large amounts of explosive energy that displaces the ore boundaries from where the geologists originally defined them. Failure to accurately account for blast movement will result in misclassification, whether that is ore to waste; low grade to high grade; sulfide to oxide; or other contaminates û collectively referred to as ore loss and dilution. The financial consequence of getting this wrong is substantial and not well quantified. This diminishes all of the good geological QA/QC done in defining the ore. This paper discusses various technologies used to physically measure blast-induced orebody movement and the difficulties in modelling this with a purely theoretical approach. Rock mass structure, blast energy, design and timing contours all have significant and interrelated effects on blast movement vectors. Measured blast movement has a large variance due to the uncertainly of many of the controlling parameters û arguably dominated by the heterogeneous nature of the rock mass. Although there have been significant advances in blast movement modelling capability in recent years, this unpredictable blast movement limits their use in the context of production ore control. Certainly, without physical field measurements, accurate predictions of movement are near impossible.Limitations of traditional surface markers in determining three-dimensional (3D) blast movement within the orebody are also reviewed, and advancements in accurately measuring these vectors within blasted ore discussed

A nine-month investigation was conducted into the effect on coke quality and blast furnace operation of the addition of bentonite and southern coal to the northern coal fed to the coke ovens at the Newcastle steelworks.Additions of 0·3 per cent bentonite or 25 per cent southern coal to the northern coal increased the coke strength from 15-20 A.S.T.M. stability to 25-30 A.S.T.M. stability. It is likely that improved mixing and blending facilities would, in both cases, give a coke of over 30 A.S.T.M. stability.For the same coke strength, the use of 0 3 per cent imported Wyoming bentonite was considerably cheaper than the use of 25 per cent southern coal, but the use of Australian bentonite promises the same coke strength for still lower costs. Other additives such as coke breeze, charcoal, iron ore fines, and certain other finely divided materials, gave relatively minor improvements in coke quality.There appeared to be sufficient improvement in blast furnace operation and production to justify full scale addition of bentonite to improve coke quality, although other variables, particularly iron ore physical quality, overshadowed on many occasions the effect of coke quality. Oceana Gold CorporationÆs (OGC) Frasers underground (FRUG) transitioned into production in early 2008. The mine uses a relatively unique yielding pillars mining method that takes its lessons from empirical coal mining practices more so than hard rock techniques. Being a low-grade, flat-dipping resource hosted in the highly structured relatively weak Otago schist in central South Island in New Zealand, meant a number of iterations were undertaken to find the right mix of mining cost and resource extraction. Mining is on the down dip extension of the active Frasers open pit at the Macraes site (that extracts the full shear zone package at a head grade of 1.5 g/t). The challenges for the FRUG feasibility study team was to deliver an net present value (NPV) positive operation that would exist as a coproduct with OGCÆs other New Zealand operations, allowing it to make use of the high throughput low cost refractory ore treatment facility.Key factors in the successful project design were: Net capital costs kept to less than NZ$30 M by realising significant gold revenues from mine development from month four onwards. Virtually eliminating waste development by putting all key capital infrastructure in the low-grade ore adjacent to panels and maintaining the option of extracting this resource on retreat from the mine. Targeting a specific higher grade halo ore package within the entire mineralised shear zone. Applying a mining method that accepted a higher degree of dilution, ore loss and resource loss (in yielding and non-yielding pillars) to the flat-dipping resource. Thus providing an acceptable margin per tonne and resource tonnes mix, as the resource could not support a conventional low-cost caving operation, nor a higher cost room and pillar or open stope and backfill operation. 2008 has seen increasing tonnes and grade performance with a corresponding decrease in cost per tonne and cost per ounce as the mine has reached nominal capacity and is producing an operating surplus. The challenge will be to maintain and improve.

The longwall system with caving is the most common mining system in Polish Collieries and the extraction is carried out simultaneously on several levels and in different seams. The extent and diversity of the methane hazard occurring is strictly connected to the specific geological and gas conditions as well as to the applied mining methods. Taking these factors into consideration the following methane drainage methods are applied as additional means of combatting the methane hazard in Polish gassy coal mines: 1. predrainage by means of boreholes drilled from the surface, 2. predrainage from stone drivages and devel- opment workings, 3. degasification of coal extraction workings, and 4. degasification of sealed-off areas/old goaves. Predrainage gave satisfactory results when holes were drilled from the surface or from underground workings, but only to depths to 300 m. It was necessary to adapt methane drain- age methods to the geological and mining con- ditions as gassiness increased with depth. The results of methane capture, both pre- drainage and post drainage were obtained by investigating several gassy mines.

Some attempts were made to recover uranium from aqueous systems by using various biosubstances including microbial biomass. Of hundreds species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stutzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomyces viridochromogenes. In parallel to this research, various kinds of biomass and commercially available crude drugs were screened to measure their abilities to adsorb uranium. Of these biosubstances tested, high uranium adsorbing ability was observed in chestnut skin, Comi fructus, Geranii herba and Chaenomelis fructus. From these results it may be considered that the uranium adsorbing ability of these biosubstances is due to the following; the uranyl ion is co-ordinated by the polyphenolic compounds such as tannin existing in the biosubstances. Along with these fundamental researches, we have developed a new adsorbent, the immobilised persimmon tannin (kakishibu tannin), for uranium and thorium. This adsorbent can accumulate 1.71 g of uranium per gram of the adsorbent (14 mEq/g), and the uranium adsorbing capacity of this adsorbent exceeds by several times that of commercially available chelating resins (2 - 3 mEq/g). We attempted to recover uranium from uranium refining waste water by using the immobilised persimmon tannin. As a result, the immobilised persimmon tannin can recover trace amounts of uranium from uranium refining waste water containing 10 - 15 ppb uranium with high efficiency. Almost all of the uranium adsorbed onto the adsorbent can be desorbed by washing with 0.05 - 0.1 M HCl or H2SO4. Thus, the immobilised persimmon tannin can be used repeatedly in the adsorption-desorption Cycle.

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. The experimentaJ work described in this paper deals with the preparation of titanium trichloride by reduction of titanium tetrachloride with hydrogen on hot surfaces.REDUCING AGENTS FOR TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDEThe free energy diagram (Fig. 1) for the formation of chlorides suggests that titanium' tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride by various reducing agents such as aluminium, zinc, arsenic, antimony, tin, mercury, silver, hydrogen, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Regional problems, such as political risk and debt reschedulings, in Pacific Rim nations coupled with the price volatility of gold mean that multi-faceted financing packages are needed to offset the many risks inherent in a new gold mine development. The cross-border risks of getting money back out of a producing mine may require the involvement of export credit agencies, multilateral government banks, or political risk insurance. Variations on forward gold sales, gold loans, or offset structures can also enhance the flexibility and safety for the providers of both the debt and equity. The region will become as large a gold producer as South Africa by 1990. The large dollar amounts for both investment and revenues realised are of great significance to the economies of many of the Pacific Rim countries especially as a means to increase foreign exchange earnings.

The rockbolting method of support is employed widely in several countries in different of mines. Hard rock mines use this method extensively. Soft rock mines, such as coal mines, have employed standing supports (steel sets) as the main method, although some countries such as the U.S.A. and Australia have preferred rockbolting. There is increasing interest in extending the rockbolting method in coal mines. The application of rockbolting techniques in an industry which traditionally has not applied such techniques, has required the development of a systematic design approach. This design approach uses extensive monitoring, to asses the viability of the support system in differing conditions. Currently at a number of new and existing mine developments in the U.K., rockbolting is being successfully applied. Although, inevitably some localised geotechnical problems have been encountered and have needed to be taken into account. The effect of faulting on roadway conditions is discussed in this paper and a design approach has been applied using a numerical analysis method, namely the Finite Element Method. The results presented in the paper serve as a useful guide to roadway support designers, and in particular the role played by different bolts in a range of conditions.

A synergistic solvent extraction (SX) system for nickel and cobalt recovery using Versatic 10 and decyl-4-pyridinecarboxylate was tested with BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution. Another synergistic SX system for cobalt and zinc recovery was successfully tested using Baja MiningÆs pilot plant leach solutions. Synergistic SX systems have also been developed to separate iron, zinc and copper from nickel and cobalt for Minara Resources and to separate manganese from magnesium and calcium in waste stream for HiTec Energy. The gypsum precipitation problem at the former Bulong operation could have been alleviated using a Versatic 10 and CLX50 synergistic SX system. These synergistic systems have shown high selectivity for target metals over impurity metals and would largely improve SX plant operation. Maintaining a æhealthyÆ organic is very important for efficient plant operation. Careful analysis of plant organic at CSIRO has been used as a tool to pre-empt and/or solve problems in operating circuits. Work performed to assist operators has included assessing plant organic solutions to highlight impurity build-up with time, assessing reagent stability under prescribed operating conditions, correlating organic composition with impurity transfer and crud analysis. An independent estimate has determined that work in this area by CSIRO has provided over $50 M in benefits to the industry.

Telfer is a gold/copper operation, currently operating one open pit mine and one underground mine. The ore processing plant consists of two parallel trains involving semi-autogenous mill, ball mill and crusher (SABC) grinding, flotation and leaching. Due to receiving relatively high grade underground ore for over half of its total feed, Train 1 frequently experienced cleaning circuit overloading during high production periods. This resulted in losses in recovery and ineffective concentrate upgrade. As a quick and simple solution, the Train 1 copper flotation circuit was reconfigured to send concentrate from the first two rougher cells directly to the final concentrate and return the cleaner scavenger tailings to the third rougher cell. These modifications have resulted in a 1.4 per cent increase in plant copper recovery with no change in final concentrate grade. Preliminary results also indicate gold recovery has increased by more than 1 per cent since the circuit reconfiguration. Other benefits include less spillage, more friendly circuit to operate and a more consistent metallurgical performance. Focus for the next phase of optimisation is on concentrate upgrade. A number of opportunities have been identified and are currently being investigated, including staged reagent addition, single stage cleaning of the first two copper rougher concentrates, regrinding of the remaining copper rougher concentrate prior to cleaning and process control based on a machine vision system.

China has been producing gold for more than 4000 years with gold production increasing substantially since the 1980s, from about 25 tonnes in 1980 to some 160 tonnes in 1998. More than 80 per cent of the gold production is from East China. However, complete information on eastern China gold has been rarely reported internationally. This is a general overview on the tectonics and metallogeny of gold deposits in East China. The geology of these gold deposits is compiled mainly from data and information reported in China, and is also based on the authorÆs work in China from 1974 to 1986 and a recent visit to China.

In recent years a large amount of work has been done at various plants overseas, and also at Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Port Pirie, South Australia, on the use of Dwight Lloyd sintering plant gases for sulphuric acid manufacture by the contact process.Several plants have modified their sintering machines and operating procedure, and some have adopted gas recirculation techniques, to obtain a relatively high proportion of the sintering plant gas at an S02 concentration acceptable to a contact acid plant 1.These adaptations were investigated at Port Pirie, and it was found that gases of suitable S02 concentration could be obtained. The results justified installation of a contact acid plant and a decision was accordingly made in 1949 to construct such a plant.However, the local conditions presented some difficulties not generally encountered at other plants, the chief differences being:a. For maintenance of production of 98% H2S04 , an unusually high S02 concentration is required, because of the prevailing high temperature 'of the purification train cooling water.b. The entire sintering operation is conducted on two large machines, 55ft. x 10ft., operating in series as "First" and "Second over" machines (a two-pass roast.) Any interruption" to either machine causes a complete interruption of plant operation and gas flow.

The operation of quarries for the production of crushed stone and aggregates, depends heavily on rock blasting efficiency, which usually represents a major share of total production costs. After investigating the causes of this situation, a series of technical aspects have been detected, and they are described for the purpose of contributing to the minimization of costs, which also reduces the effects of blasting on the environment. Utilization of empirical design methods, of inadequate explosive types, and of erroneous drilling pauems with respect to rock properties, are the main factors to be corrected, as a consequence of poor engineering criteria, with scarce use of computational methods and field instrumentation. Several concepts of blasting optimization are pointed out, and their application to industrial operations in a Portuguese limestone quarry indicated clear trends for the reduction of production costs, as well as some of the deleterious consequences of blasting on the environment.
