Mineral exploration management has undergone major changes particularly in the last decade. Parallel to these changes in management, and partially responsible for them, have been the changes in governmental laws and regulations at both National and State levels reinforced by a highly competitive climate created by the exploration boom in Australia. The influence of overseas methods and approaches have been married to the Australian techniques resulting in a management climate which is not only familiar with the technical aspects of exploration, but is also familiar with the personnel, economic and legal phases associated with the expenditure of very large sums of money. The utilization of all the geosciences coupled with mathematical models and computer techniques for pre-selection and assessment of areas are now normal aids used in management decisions. Management techniques developed and being developed will ensure that successful exploration will be carried out if sufficient incentives are guaranteed.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined- out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room- and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

Dartbrook (Hunter Valley and South Bulli (Southern Coalfield) Collieries provide contrasting settings for gas sorption studies. Gas compositions at Dartbrook are dominated by carbon dioxide, with minor methane, while those at South Bulli are dominated by methane with minor carbon dioxide. Total gas contents at Dartbrook are also significantly greater than those at South Bulli. The two collieries are also contrasted in terms of coal composition and mining environment. Dartbrook Colliery mines a relatively small sectionb(4m) of very thick seam (up to mapproximately25m); the coal is vitrinite-rich, high volatile bituminous. South Bulli mines most of the seam thickness, with coal being an intertinite-rich, medium volatile bituminous coal.Coal samples have been collected from in-seam gas drainage holes for evaluation of relative gas desorption rate (methane versus carbon dioxide). Following adsorption isotherms, petrography, chemistry (proximate and ultimate analysis) and pore structure analysis (carbon dioxide surface area, mercury porosimetry). Bomb desorption studies indicate different behaviours for methane desorption at these two collieries desorbed gas compositions at South Bulli show a small enrichment in methane content. The opposite is observed at Dartbrook. Both collieries show enrichment in CO2 in the residual content. Adsorption studies show marked variation in adsorbed gas contents for methane and carbon dioxide at each colliery and between collieries. These variations are related to differences in coal pore structure, chemistry and Petrology.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

A substitute for rutile can be produced by leaching natural or pre-treated ilmenite in hydrochloric acid. Ilmenite in its natural form is an extraordinarily inactive mineral from which the selective removal of iron is rather difficult. The reactivity of ilmenite so that it can be leached with dilute hydro- chloric acid (=2O% w/w) can be enhanced by pre-treatment steps of oxidation and re- duction. The temperatures at which oxidation and reduction are carried out have an effect on both the kinetics of these steps and the leaching kinetics and optimum temperatures for oxidation and reduction are 950 and 850¦C respectively. The mechanism of leaching of iron from pretreated ilmenite and the effects of rate of agitation, temperature, acid con- centration and addition of ferrous chloride to hydrochloric acid on leaching kinetics and production of fines are discussed in the paper.

The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

Consideration of the questions: (i) is it feasible to study groups of processes in a generalised way? (ii) to what extent does purpose affect the form of a process model? (iii) are there any significant, novel investig- ations which can be made by computer simulation? (iv) what long-term developments are desirable in extractive metallurgy? has led to some new broad objectives for research in hydrometallurgical process engineering. Propositions for grouping processes, developing models for different specific purposes, using a systems engineering approach and developing high technology processes are discussed, and the role of computer simulation indicated by reference to particular projects.

The introduction of large diameter holes to underground mining has provided the first opportunity to apply near spherical charges in production scale blasts instead of the convent- ional long cylindrical charges generally used in stope and pillar mining. A modified version of the cratering prin- ciple was applied in the blast design in extrac- ting ore across a horizontal area of a stope or pillar. The new rock breaking technique has developed into the Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) mining system and eliminated raise boring, slot cutting and dilution of the ore by back- fill material. Furthermore it has reduced labour and time requirements thus becoming not only a low cost method of mining but the safest method of underground mining known today. Exceptionally fine muck is provided with a minimum of damage by blasts to walls and re- treating backs of the stope or pillar. The VCR method can also be used for drop- raising, and for the excavation of underground cavities for almost any purpose . The proper explanation of the breakage mechanism of the near spherical charges opposite to the cylindrical charges yet to be found. The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

Risk and uncertainty are attached to mining projects, and making decisions, hedging, future investment and evaluation of mining projects depend on forecasting the future price. The future technologic developments in mining will be primarily influenced by the future commodity prices. A few approaches, with different confidences are proposed to predict price movement in the future. This research introduces a new comprehensive version of the mean reverting jump diffusion model for natural-resource commodity prices. The novel model proposes that the historical data of mineral commodities have three terms to demonstrate fluctuation of prices: mean reversion component, diffusion component and jump component. The model calculates each term individually to compute the future prices of mineral commodities. Subsequently, in the second section of the paper, the model is implemented for monthly historical data of gold price from January 1968 to May 2008. This research is investigating the relationship between the historical oil price and inflation with the gold price. This is followed by a future estimation of gold price fluctuations up to 2018. The results from the application of this new method are discussed in the context of how they accurately replicate the historical gold price and how they can predict the future gold price.

The processing of black coal in Australia segregates waste in the form of coarse reject and fine tailings. The coarse reject is relatively easy to handle, while the tailings can be problematic. Conventionally, the two waste materials are disposed of separately, the coarse reject in dumps, and the tailings in man-made containments. Aqueous tailings slurry is pumped to a 'wet' tailings storage, where the fine particle size of the tailings limits dewatering. Their low bearing capacity and high compressibility result in tailings deposits being difficult to rehabilitate. Disposing of the waste streams separately moves away from the heterogeneous mixture in the undisturbed ground, and concentrates potential problems with each waste stream. The feasibility and desirability of the co-disposal of tailings and coarse reject by combined pumping is demonstrated. This technique is in operation at Jeebropilly Mine and is proposed for a number of other coal mines.

Coal is a very versatile resource, having variable characteristics and having potential for a wide variety of mar- kets. Australia has extensive deposits of black coal, although they are concentrated mainly in Eastern Australia. Assessments of the currently known reserves are related to the qualities of these reserves. Markets available to black coal fall into the broad groupings of metallurgical, fuel, conversion and miscellaneous markets and the requirements of these markets are related to coal characteristics. Market trends in Australia and on the export market are discussed and projected forward. By the end of this century Australian consumption of black coal could well be 100 million tonnes per annum, and, in the absence of any export restriction, a similar amount is likely to be exported. Currently defined black coal resources in Australia will last at least 600 years at these projected rates of consumption. Although the position appears satisfactory in considering the projected life of the black coal resources, there is a serious lack of detailed information on reserves, mining and preparation yields, quality and possible environmental restrictions. Action is required on three parallel courses: (1) a consistent, systematic and extensive survey of current coal resources in Australia, (2) accelerated exploration activity to define poorly prospected and potential areas, and (3) regular updating and extension of the knowledge of Australia's coal resources. This information would be of tremendous assistance for the formulation of a national energy policy on coal.

The performance of a system for detecting the onset of overloads on rod mills is described. The system has bee,, tested at CODELCO E1 Salvador Concentrator where, due t,, variations on size distribution of the copper ore feed, th' rod mill is frequently subject to overloads. The main inpur signal to the system is the rod mill sound, after being measured and analog conditioned. This signal and othe signals measuring the fresh ore feed and the mill watt addition are fed to a computer containing a simpl mathematical model. The model parameters are empiricall estimated and an analog output signal is generated, whic gives an early prediction of the overload condition. The experimental results described in this paper show that the overload condition may be predicted with an anticipation of about three minutes.

Paste backfill technology is gaining rapid acceptance in the Canadian mining industry. The authors were able to work on four different mining sites employing paste technology in their operation. In each site the paste backfill is prepared with very fine tailings containing significant amounts of sulphur minerals. The research program involved laboratory testing on samples prepared in the laboratory, on control samples obtained at the backfilll plant during pouring into the stopes and on core samples obtained from drilling in backfilled stopes. The laboratory testing provided detailed knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the paste backfill. The need for a means of measuring the in-situ mechanical properties of the backfill became clear. A review of various trials published in literature and an evaluation of available technology suggested the Cambridge Self-boring Pressuremeter. A first field campaign confirmed the efficiency and dependability of this instrument leading to the conclusion that it offers a very good method for the in situ measurement of paste backfill properties.

The majority of water to the Olympic Dam mine and the nearby townships of Roxby Downs and Andamooka is supplied from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB). There are no permanent local water sources available to Olympic Dam. The use of water from the Great Artesian Basin by Olympic Dam receives considerable attention by BHP Billiton and is extensively regulated by the Government of South Australia. Olympic Dam has robust business management systems in place to ensure the sustainable use of water from the GAB including ISO9001 and ISO14001 systems to deliver the targeted outcomes and obligations of the Olympic Dam Environmental Management and Monitoring Program. The management systems ensure that Olympic Dam retains accountability for its water demand from the GAB over the life of the mine. This accountability has delivered continuous improvement in water use efficiency driven by operating discipline, implementation of water saving projects, using water on a fit for purpose basis including substitution from non-GAB sources, and risk management to prevent and mitigate water supply disruptions to Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs. Since the establishment of Olympic Dam, BHP Billiton has funded a reduction in GAB water flow from bores, previously going to waste, that is greater than the annual average flow used by Olympic Dam.

IN this paper an attempt is made to describe the sluicing operations on the tin fields of north-eastern Tasmania. No claim is made to completeness, for much of the ground has already been covered, and nothing is to be gained by needless repetition. On this account some portions of the subject have obviously received but scanty attention in order that others may be rather more fully dealt with; for instance, figures referring to the accuracy of various methods of valuing alluvial deposits, particulars of efficiencies, and water duties on both overburden and drift; also, the system of recording water distribution, &c.The plans of the tin-streaming shed, sluice and feed·race, and overburden tail-race represent types of the most modern design.The principal alluvial deposits being worked at the present time are situated either in the ancient or modern bed of the Ringarooma river or its tributaries. Rational design of layouts for longwall operations is greatly facilitated by use of an accurate and economical method for predicting stresses and displacements. The displacement discontinuity method (a form of boundary element method) is based on replacing actual excavation geometries by thin slits of the same plan area. This approach allows three-dimensional stress- analysis at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods. The analyses can be readily performed on economical microcomputers, putting the analysis capability within the reach of mine-site personnel. This paper describes investigations associated with the German Creek Central Colliery, the first longwall operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The material properties used in the model, in particular the rock mass and goaf properties, have been 'tuned' to fit stress measurements obtained during extraction of the first and second longwall panels at the mine. The study shows that model predictions based on suitably scaled anisotropic rock strata properties are in good agreement with the stress measurements made to date. This model predicts average chain pillar loads significantly higher than predicted by models based on United Kingdom conditions. A working chain pillar design method is proposed using average pillar loads predicted by the numerical model and ultimate strength characteristics given by Bieniawski's formula.

Epithermal gold-silver deposits occur in young volcanic terrains where post-mineral cover commonly impedes the search for mineralisation. At the Togi Project in Honshu, Japan, a complex mineralised system is largely covered by post mineral volcaniclastics. A combination of high resolution electrical resistivity surveying and detailed airphoto interpretation has, with close geological control, enabled synthesis of structural and alteration characteristics of the Togi geothermal system, in turn permitting ranking of the prospects for drill testing.
