A well-maintained and low cost mining operation today requires the use of condition monitoring techniques. At ERA - Ranger Mine oil analysis, vibration monitoring, infra-red themtography, and performance analysis have been successfully applied over the last four years to lower operating and maintenance costs. All condition monitoring is scheduled through a comprehensive in-house developed maintenance management system known as the Engineering Information System (EIS). (EIS) is used extensively at Ranger to ensure consistent frequency and recording .of all condition monitoring data. This paper provides an insight into the benefits of condition monitoring and explores the future direction for condition monitoring techniques at Ranger.

Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

Every diesel engine emits approximately 100 million nano diesel particles (nDP) per cubic centimetre of raw exhaust. Each nDP has a diameter of between 50 and 70 nano metres or 1/100th the size of red blood cells (diameter of between 6 and 8 microns). When inhaled, some nDP pass through the lungs and penetrate all body tissue [1]. Europe and North America have recognised and are addressing the long term health problems posed by nano diesel particulate matter (nDPM) across their societies [2.3]. Australia has been slow to recognise the issue, at both a societal and mining industry level. There are chronic health effects for every underground miner and serious legal issues for mining companies with increasingly stringent Occupational Health and Safety legislation being implemented at a state level across Australia. This paper will review progress within Australian society and more particularly the underground hard rock mining industry, particularly in Western Australia (WA).

Projects must be flexible to account for the rapid development of new technologies and changing stakeholder expectations. Coupled with calls for bleeding-edge solutions, customers, shareholders, and regulators demand robust, safe products and systems-of-systems. Developing and integrating these solutions is becoming increasingly complex and maintaining the flexibility required to ‘pivot’ to effective solutions can be a serious challenge. The necessary flexibility is fundamental to the Agile ethos, and this family of methodologies therefore offers a potential solution to this challenge (Beedle et al, 2001). These have traditionally been delivered with systems engineering applied through a Waterfall methodology. Agile Systems Engineering combines both approaches and presents a means to achieve these goals without compromising flexibility, quality or safety. A robust methodology for the application of Agile Systems Engineering is required to enhance practical outcomes and reduce risk for real-world mining projects.

Best practice standards generally recommend assessment of the environmental and societal risks posed by tailings storage facilities, but they rarely specify how the analysis should be made. As a case study, this paper describes a safety assessment of the Zelazny Most tailings pond operated by the Hydrotechnical Unit of KGHM Polska Miedz SA in Poland. The complete assessment includes a failure mode effect criticality analysis (FMECA) that considers all conceivable failure modes, but this paper focuses on one key mode, the loss of stability during the planned raising of the crest above its current level. Reliability against static dam failure considers uncertainty on the safety factor in a limit equilibrium approach. The threat of dynamic (earthquake induced) instability is assessed by developing a model of future seismicity as a function of the mining plan and considering uncertainty on the induced permanent displacements along critical sliding surfaces. We quantify the additional level of protection against outflow provided by the beach using an event tree with expert-assigned probabilities. Continuous monitoring of the dam for premonitory signs of instability and a set of loss-prevention plans in the case of a spill provide additional layers of protection; their effectiveness is quantified by estimating the fraction of the population that could be evacuated as a function of warning time. The probabilistic analysis indicates that the safety targets are met and produces practical recommendations on how to maintain and improve the safety level while the dam crest is raised above its current level.CITATION:Van Dyck, J, Pytel, W, Veneziano, D, Snow, R and Zanoli, O, 2015. Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. It’s expected that the world economy will face a stable and continuous growth in the demand of iron ore, reaching more than two billion tonnes per year within the next year. After decades exploiting resources with high content of iron ore, now the industry faces the challenge to exploit and beneficiate more complex ores.According to the industrial practice, the flotation technology is one of the most important and effective beneficiation processes to deal with low-grade iron ores around the world. However, even with this, it is still necessary to search for new processing routes or promote the optimisation of the existing circuits.The broad application of this technology is an outcome that deeply relies on the proper selection of flotation chemicals specifi cally designed for each system. New collectors are in continuous development as flotation performance significantly relies upon their optimisation.The reverse iron ore flotation in Brazil, mainly constituted by haematite and quartz, uses ether amines as collector for silica minerals and caustic corn starch as depressor for haematite. The process selectivity is highly impacted by the features of the etheramine, such as:• mono or di-etheramine,• neutralisation degree,• chain length,• branched or linear chain,• the flotation pH, and• the size distribution of the flotation feed.This paper describes the experience obtained from laboratory and industrial trials on different ores, conducted to improve the selectivity and recovery in the reverse iron ore flotation by selecting the required collector for low-grade ores.

Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. In most network connected technical installations and machines however, network security is not taken into account to a significant extent: insecure protocols are run, unencrypted information is exchanged freely and even broadcasted wirelessly and networked machines are accessible via insecure file transfer protocol (FTP).What happens in case of malfunctions of such technical installations? Who is responsible? Who can be held liable in case of accidents? The first computer worm for automation systems (æSTUXNETÆ) (Symantec, 2010) was discovered during 2010.The paper is intended to create sensitivity among decision makers for potential security and resulting safety leaks and points out the current status quo in technical network security. It outlines best practices for secure networking and procedures for remote access and remote software updates on stationary equipment and mobile mining machinery. It describes how to ensure authentic and genuine configurations and software targets and how to ensure secure communication for autonomous and remote controlled equipment. For such equipment in particular, the following statement should apply: æThere is no safety without network securityÆ.

Mining is recognised as being one of the most dangerous industries in the world due to the difficult working conditions. Working in such hazardous circumstances in an underground mine often results in a variety of accidents. The working conditions at Kazakhstan’s underground mines have deteriorated owing to a lack of a risk-reduction plan and methodology. This paper evaluates different underground mines in Kazakhstan and demonstrates the employed mining method and the observed failure modes. Risk assessment has long been recognised as a valuable technique for preventing accidents. In the underground mining sector, risk assessment tools play an important role in avoiding work-related accidents. However, geotechnical uncertainty is a significant source of severe incidents like stress-induced roof collapse, wedge failure, seismicity etc, which result in human and financial losses. A geotechnical risk assessment performed early in the mine design process might assist justify a different mine design component, such as different support systems for a dangerous location within the mine openings during mining. The goal of this research is to create a damage/failure database aiming at the development of a geomechanical risk assessment methodology. This work identifies a thematic structure linked to risk assessment and management for the examined Kazakhstan mining sector. As part of the developed database, the dominant modes of failure within the Kazakhstan underground mining conditions were investigated. The study will provide opportunities to establish future research objectives for Kazakhstan’s mining industry where there are significant gaps between state-of-the-art research and mining operations in practice.

The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. This paper attempts to explain and describe bankers' approach by: ò outlining the fundamental difference between banks' and investors' risk / return profiles. ò describing lenders' consequent use of cash flow methods in mineral valuation. areas. explaining lenders' specific treatment of key risk Fundamental to understanding banks' appraisal of mineral projects is the appreciation that lenders have a basically different risk profile and outlook from those familiar to equity investors. Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.

The aim of this study is to examine the volumetric and mass movement characteristics of load and haul operations using statistical modelling of relatively large samples of bucket loads that are transported as small samples in the form of truck payloads. Generally, the factors influencing bucket load variability are random, difficult to predict and to control. In the process of loading trucks the underlying variability of individual bucket loads will determine the variability of truck payloads. Bucket loads of material prepared by drilling and blasting for loading into trucks are fundamental quantities in open pit mine production. A study of payload data from a large surface mining operation indicates that bucket loads and truck payloads that are a small sample of bucket loads are normally distributed. Truck payloads have a reduced dispersion compared with bucket loads that is an inverse 0.5 power function of the number of passes per truck payload. Comparison of statistical modelling results with the æ10/10/20Æ policy promoted by Caterpillar Global Mining Inc, indicate that compliance with the æ10/10Æ part of the policy, applying to truck overloading is facilitated, as the coefficient of variation of truck payloads decreases, as a result of the increasing number of loading passes. Compliance with the more stringent æ20Æ part of the policy, relating to safe steering and braking is also facilitated, albeit at lower coefficient of variation for similar reasons.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. Rotary kilns have been in service in the gold industry to regenerate carbon for 65 years. At the time oxide ores with gold head grades of 8 to 10 g/t were being treated. Carbon could be regenerated adequately at 650°C and solution losses were less than 1%. Forty years ago, research indicated that heavily fouled carbon from flotation circuits had to be held at 750 to 850°C for ten to twenty minutes for full reactivation (Avraamides and La Brooy, 1987), gold head grades were typically 5 g/t and solution losses typically 0.02 ppm – still less than 1%. In 2017 it was determined (Claflin et al., 2017) that a residence time of less than 1 minute at 750°C can be adequate to reactivate carbon fouled with organics sufficiently to achieve 0.005 ppm solution losses in a flotation tailings leach plant.With the potential for discovery head grades to drop below 0.6 g/t, solution losses of 0.02 ppm represent over 3% loss. Tight operation of the whole carbon circuit is required to keep gold solution losses below 1% going forward.There are alternatives to a rotary carbon kiln, e.g. vertical kilns of which the Minfurn, Rintoul and Combustion Air kilns are examples. The alternative kilns can be heated using electrical heating elements, induction, and microwave. These kilns can operate successfully under the right conditions, however, they are almost exclusively for small carbon throughputs and are not suitable for the large carbon advance rates that are required to process low head grade ore deposits. Large throughput carbon kilns are are almost exclusively fossil fuel fired rotary kilns and the subject of this paper. In the view of the principal author, a fossil fuel fired vertical carbon kiln is preferred to a rotary kiln, however, it is not currently used in the industry.Thermal regeneration of activated carbon has a major impact on gold recovery in the carbon circuit. The carbon kiln and associated equipment constitute 3 to 5% of the capital cost for an oxide processing plant and up to 10% of the capital cost if flotation tails are leached. Despite the capital cost and impact on recovery, the carbon kiln is often poorly selected, operated and maintained.Six years ago Ausenco embarked on the Carbon Kiln Initiative to reduce solution gold losses. This body of knowledge has been published in a series of papers culminating in this paper on how to:1. Select a kiln appropriate for the flowsheet;2. Is the Northern Territory different? Certainly it is more remote, has less people and relies more heavily on two or three industries for its survival. On the other hand, its mining industry is governed by Acts not dissimilar to those of the major States - a Mining Act provides the basis for acquisition of tenure, a Mine Management Act provides regulatory control, a Mineral Royally Act collects revenue in return for the right to utilise the land's bounties, an Environmental Assessment Act provides the public face to rehabilitation and environmental safety, and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act purports to give development criteria for inalienable land use. With the exception of the latter, at least until the advent of Mabo, all these are simply variations on a theme, and are common to most States. This paper will show how the Department of Mines and Energy works in relation to the Northern Territory mining industry.

Grade Engineering®, integrated across the mine value chain, has a pivotal role to play in achieving step change reductions in energy and water usage in mine operations. High levels of gangue rejection in the mine can significantly improve mineral head grades and overall productivity. A highly successful example is described at the Minera San Cristóbal (MSC) operation. The nature of the mineralisation in their “intrusive” ore domains in particular has facilitated high rejection rates (75 % of the mass), with significant upgrading of metal to the “accepts” streams (equating to a 2.6 times upgrade in the intrinsic Nett Smelter Return). Results from a series of production trials have confirmed these strong upgrades, resulting in the transformation of mineralised “marginal wastes” to high grade ore feedstocks. If new approaches to more energy and water efficient comminution and separation technologies can also realise gangue rejection at finer sizes in the concentrator, then preconcentration strategies across the value chain also offer the promise of no wet tailings treatment facilities and greatly reduced volumes of waste streams. This “No Tails” strategy is discussed, along with the integrated technologies needed to realise its effect. The work suggests a pathway and insights of a sustainable future for the Minerals Industry, unconstrained by Energy and Water, along with no requirement to produce problematic disposal streams. This strategy has the potential to significantly reposition the social, environmental, financial, and regulatory context of existing and new mining opportunities.
