Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

In order to provide a'valid description of the performance of size classifying equipment it is necessary that a standard procedure be established for testing and for the subsequent expression of results. Such a standard would permit the valid comparison of alternative equipment and may provide a basis for the prediction of performance. An Australian Standard (AS 1634-1974) has been used as the starting point for an International Standards Organisation-(ISO) working group (of which the authors are members) charged with the preparation of an ISO Standard for the expression and presentation of the results of tests on coal size classifying equipment. The approach taken is applicable to all types of sizing equipment (cyclones, screens, dedusters, etc.) and should be suitable for adoption in the minerals industry as well as by coal preparation engineers. The background to the proposed Standard, is given,including a critical review of other frequently quoted performance measures, the procedures described in the draft are discussed, and an example given.

Current mineral extraction and valorisation activities still have a strong focus on the ‘delivered product(s)’ which might be a bulk commodity such as metallurgical coal, hematite, bauxite, etc., and mineral concentrates such as metal sulphides, oxides, and carbonates; precious metals, such as gold, silver and PGMs, REEs or battery metals; halogen salt forming elements; or industrial minerals, which are non-metals including crushed rock, sand, and gravel etc. With the current focus on tailings disposal the pushback has been to seek alternatives to the currently ‘conventional’ disposal method via increasingly higher risk tailings settling facilities (TSFs) with a changing focus towards ‘dry disposal’. Whichever option is selected, the alarming trend is the increasing cost and ESG impacts. An emerging approach is to pose a focusing question ‘Is there anything else passing into the tailings stream and/or disposable waste streams which could be recovered and pass into the product revenue stream? All of the above ‘primary’ process streams offer opportunities for increasing recovery and offsetting some of the disposal costs. Some secondary opportunities are already being pursued, such as REEs and battery metals from base metals deposits, but other opportunities are still being overlooked, such as building materials and soil conditioning pellets. These potential ‘new’ product streams can also utilise other mining and domestic wastes such as smelting slags, glass waste, plastic waste etc. This paper will address these opportunities and provide examples including process approach, economics and some of the current barriers that exist, which are holding back progress on such initiatives.

This paper presents the design and construction approach adopted for the widening and stabilisation of the existing decline tunnel forming part of the Scenic Railway Upgrade project at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The overall upgrade project included new trains and track, rebuilding of the top and bottom station and installation of a new winch and control system. All the works were undertaken over an eight-month period between August 2012 and April 2013 as part of a $30 M upgrade of the railway.The railway is the steepest cable-driven line in the world at a maximum of 52° extending over 350 m and descending from the escarpment into the Jamison Valley. The track was built in the 1880s for coal haulage and is recognised as a remarkable engineering achievement for its time. The tunnel section extends for about 120 m at the start of the decline and is about 3.5 m wide and 3.5 m high. The tunnel was excavated principally within medium to high strength Banks Wall sandstone and given that the widening only involved about 200 mm of trimming of the crown and sidewall this aspect of the work was not a critical support issue, except at the upslope portal. The tunnel crown however is entirely intersected by a major near vertical shear zone which presented significant challenges for the tunnel stabilisation works.Three-dimensional laser survey scanning was used for definition of the tunnel clearance envelope for the widening, and also to subdivide the tunnel into various geotechnical sections to assist in support design. Specifically oriented rock bolts extending beyond the shear zone into stable rock were used together with mesh, shotcrete and extensive strip drains and flushing points for drainage of the shear zone.Unique aspects of this project were included into the specifications and work methods. This included construction of a mobile working platform for tunnel works, the use of dry shotcrete application, difficult access for rock bolting and limiting vibration during the tunnel trimming works due to the risks associated with crown instability. The works also took into consideration particular safety constraints/work exclusion areas to address the risk of detachment of rock which could mobilise downslope to the track area below. This was required because other works were in progress such as micro-piling and bottom platform works which were being undertaken concurrently with the tunnel work.CITATION:Rosin, S G and Hughes, A, 2014. Competition in the mining industry is the main driving force for both equipment manufacturers and end users to develop and apply the most cost efficient solution to a mining problem. Therefore the challenge to find new solutions is usually met by several suppliers under various factors of influence affecting specifications. Time and timing are particularly important, but all new developments ultimately have to successfully perform on site.Consideration of all aspects of planning, manufacturing, user liaison and ultimate satisfactory commissioning hinges on the necessities of assessing of all the expectations in the mining application and the requirements of the concept and layout team. To apply the maximum available technical competence with solid thorough workmanship is the best possible foundation for success of underground machinery development.

The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, minus what is taken up by the rivers and streams is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area of the district is 2,417,299 acres. The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea and Waiwakaiho. Mount Egmont, which is 8260 ft. high, used to be called Taranaki, and from it the district takes its name (the Maori meaning of which is "sloping peak ").THE OIL-FIELDThe discription of an oil-field now-a-days usually resolves itself into a mass of figures and statistics, of great interest and value to the engineer and commercial man, but practically indigestible to the general public. In the past few years the Rietveld method emerged as a routine tool for quantitative phase analysis (QPA) from X-ray diffraction data. Fast and reliable results became possible by combining modern computer technology and optimised mathematical algorithms with the fundamental parameters approach in the Bruker AXS TOPAS software. Here the routine analysis of bauxite raw material and of aluminium bath electrolyte is presented. The accuracy of bauxite quantification was tested by analysing the IUCr round robin sample. An agreement of better than one per cent was obtained for minor constituents and a maximum deviation of 2.5 per cent for the major phases. This is excellent agreement with expected results from weighting. Ten different phases were quantified in natural samples from Turkey with a precision better 0.5 per cent for the major phases and one per cent for the minor phases. Additionally, crystallite sizes were obtained from the peak profiles that give valuable information for the processability of the material. XRD data from solidified aluminium electrolytes were rapidly measured using silicon strip detector technology. With the LynxEyeTM detector full patterns were collected in 90 seconds and analysed with TOPAS. It is shown how to derive well-established measures such as bath ratio and excess AlF3 from the Rietveld results. These measures are widely used in aluminium production and readily available with very high precision. The excellent agreement with ALCAN reference data demonstrates the outstanding accuracy of the method. The mean deviation between here presented results and reference data is below 0.5 per cent for total CaF2, below 0.25 per cent for excess AlF3 and 0.02 for the bath ratio. The precision of the method was evaluated by repeated measurements.

A new crude ilmenite beneficiation process was recently proposed that allowed for the preparation of a smelter grade ilmenite from ilmenite with elevated chromium content. Magnetising roasting was not utilised in the process. As part of this circuit an ilmenite low susceptible reject stream was produced that had a low magnetic susceptibility. In this article a magnetising roasting process was investigated to beneficiate this material. Tests were conducted on material produced by pilot scale simulations on a typical South African East Coast heavy mineral reserve. The results obtained were compared to those published in literature for crude ilmenite. The small-scale experiments were used to define approximate operational limits for the oxidising roasting of a low susceptible ilmenite low susceptible reject stream, although industrial roasting conditions may differ significantly from those obtained in laboratory units. In a next phase these results will be confirmed on pilot plant scale.

The success of the Australian mining industry depends on the quality of its skills. High quality skills supported by a culture which demands success lead to innovations, good practices and prosperity. Average skills lead inevitably to mediocrity. Universities play an essential role in the development and use of skills but the crucial industry-university links have been subordinated to conventional academic interests in training mining and processing engineers. It is only in the area of post-graduate research degrees which are oriented towards the mineral industry that Australia can claim world leadership. Deficiencies are not due to lack of training resources, they are due to inadequate utilisation of the resources that are available. Australia can and should have the world's best mineral engineering school, with a branch in Asia where many of its customers are and close ties with South America where some of its production operations will be. Some steps which might be taken to achieve this are proposed.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. To outline how an effective and economical solution can be designed and delivered, this paper will present a case study for the removal of arsenic from a site wastewater, from assessment of the problem, selection of suitable technology, design and implementation, to the benefits delivered to the site.CITATION:Salokannel, A, Nevatalo, L M, Martikainen, M, van der Meer, T and McCulloch, J, 2013. Methodological approaches and in- vestigation results are considered in the paper of heatmass transfer processes when harmful impurities are scattered and remo- ved from chamber-like workings, of the air distribution in complicated ventilation sys- tems and of chemical conversion of exha- ust gases in mine atmosphere when diesel equipment is operating. The results presented in the paper are the base for creation of the automatic design, control and regulation of the venti- lation processes.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

Data management is a significant, but perhaps unrecognised, consideration for any organisation embarking on a geometallurgy program. While resource geologists are accustomed to dealing with thousands or millions of samples and their associated assays, metallurgists and mineralogists have traditionally carried out only a few expensive and complicated tests and consequently tend to manage the resultant data in spreadsheets. The emerging discipline of geometallurgy arrives with significant challenges as a result of the sheer volume of data generated. As an example, the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated more than:60 000 physical subsamples analysed for up to 30 analytes; 25 000 spreadsheet-based laboratory test results; 30 000 sized fractions analysed via QXRD, MLA and/or QEMSCAN;multiple external providers of data, and more than seven terabytes of data. Considerations for any geometallurgy data management system include storage space, data integrity, accessibility, traceability (sample provenance), maintenance and ease of use, integration with data providers and the ability to modify the system to adapt to changing requirements. Further, aspects of a geometallurgy program, such as conducting a range of tests on one sample, producing subsamples such as concentrates and tailings, compositing and routine QA/QC may not be well handled by existing software and providers geared to standard geochemistry, mineralogy or metallurgical test programs. The development of a geometallurgy database using existing software (AcQuire), and the associated file management system will be described for a large geometallurgy program at Olympic Dam. As with many aspects of geometallurgy there is no approach that meets the needs of every site or program. Recognition of data management as an issue, a structured approach in the program planning phase and commitment to executing the strategy will increase the chances of successfully mining the geometallurgical data.

Cyanide is a significant contributor to the cost of producing gold. Any reduction in cyanide consumption that is achieved through more reliable measurement, and/or more efficient management of cyanide dosing rates, can produce a significant financial saving to the mine operation.

The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. Marine sediments of Devonian age are con-sidered prospective source beds for petroleum. Current work is directed toward finding favorable structure and reservoir beds to test the oil prospects of the area.

This paper reviews the history of environmental assessment in New Zealand with reference to mineral developments. Emphasis is given to larger more controversial projects particularly metal mines. The changing role and application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Procedures is examined in the context of changes in the government's environmental administration and the response of the Ministry of Energy's resource allocation group. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of the present environmental assessment activities and on the allocation of administration of priorities in the Ministry. The Ministry of Energy has effectively ceased to exist.

Entry of personnel under a vertical raise bored hole is not standard practice in Australia. Where access is required below a rise, mining operations must be confident that they understand the capacity of the ground control specified and installed. Physical modelling was conducted on Callie mine to evaluate the performance of 5 mm steel wire weldmesh secured to the base of a vertical raise bored hole of 1.4 m diameter. Joint orientation data was used with Unwedge to calculate a series of potential wedges likely to form within the rise. The mass of the most likely wedges were then replicated by collecting rocks in 5 kg increments (¦10 per cent), which were allowed to freefall onto installed mesh at the base of a 40 m vertical rise. The results indicate that two sheets of mesh can retain a freefalling rock of at least 20 kg mass although rupture of strands can result. This paper outlines the test conditions, expected results based on theoretical calculations and actual outcomes of the testing.
