Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

The Morobe Goldfield inPapua New Guinea has produced in excess of 120 tonnes of gold from predominantly alluvial sources. Hardrock gold has been mined historically at Wau (23 t) and Edie Creek (4 t) and geological resources have been established at Hidden Valley (78 t), Kerimenge (36 t) and Hamata (30 t).Numerous prospects have also been identified within the goldfield. Primary gold mineralisation is related to intrusion of dacitic to andesitic Edie Porphyry (2.4 to 3.8 Ma), often with associated diatremes, which have intruded along major regional structures. A full spectrum of deposit styles from proximal (mesothermal) to distal (epithermal) to the porphyry source is recognised. The transition between the proximal and distal styles is recognised both between deposits and within an individual deposit. The deposit styles should be termed porphyry related gold mineralisation rather than given the generic epithermal and mesothermal labels.   It is proposed that magmatic fluids which evolved from parent melts to the high level Edie porphyry stocks mixed with convecting meteoric fluids and were channelled along major structure and diatreme contacts. Proximal to the intrusives, gold mineralisation is associated with deposition of pyrite-hematite-quartz+/-magnetite-gold (Hamata) and pyritebasemetals-quartz-gold (Wau). The mineralising fluids were hot, and periodically saline due to pulses of magmatic fluid. Gold is non-refractory and occurs as 20 to 30 micron blebs within the pyrite.   More distal from the intrusives or under late cooler conditions, mixing of cool dilute meteoric and magmatic fluids resulted in gold deposition associated with arsenic rich pyrite-and arsenopyrite-mineralisation (Kerimenge, Hamata and Edie Creek). Gold is refractory and occurs within the sulfides either as sub-micron inclusion or within the lattice.   CO2 and H2S gases which evolved off the upwelling hydrothermal fluids as a result of boiling and pressure reductions, condensed within superficial groundwater and formed cool oxygenated bicarbonate fluids. These fluids percolated back down the structures depositing manganocarbonate in the upper parts of the hydrothermal system. At deeper levels in the system mixing of the descending bicarbonate fluid with upwelling mineralised fluids deposited manganocarbonate-quartz-sulfides nonrefractory gold (Hidden Valley, Wau and Edie Creek).   At Kerimenge the cool bicarbonate fluids have also quenched a late stage magmatic fluid rising along high permeability structures. The quenching has resulted in deposition of non-refractory gold mineralisation associated with hessite (Ag2Te)-tennantite-chalcopyrite deposition.   Within the Morobe Goldfield, a transition from deeper level pyrite-quartz+/-hematite-magnetite to intermediate level quartz sulfide and quartz-carbonate-sulfide deposition to upper level, massive manganocarbonate deposition is recognized. During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

An exploratory laboratory work was carried out on microbial leaching of poor non-sulphide nickel ores, not amenable to conventional mineral processing operations. The results have shown that domestic low-grade lateritic ores of limonitic or haematitic type are amenable to bioleaching by fungal strains of Aspergillus sp and Penicillium sp. Maximum nickel and cobalt recoveries achieved were 60 per cent and 50 per cent respectively. Losses of soluble nickel in the fungal biomass were found in the range 3 - 11 per cent. Chemical analysis of the leach liquors showed the presence of significant amounts of citric, oxalic and other organic acids, indicating the role which certain metabolic products of fungal activity may play in the process. Possibilities for future investigations are discussed.

Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. "The Didipio Gold-Copper project in the Philippines has been a well-defined reasonably high gold grade porphyry for almost two decades. OceanaGold are now bringing the project into production in late 2012 and have recently reoptimised the project with the goal of combining the inherent high grades with higher through-put than previously proposed that will see strong initial metal production. The project was discovered and well defined by 1995, but has seen some obstacles to development, namely sovereign risk, capital cost and project funding. The project strengths over this time that have kept the flames alive are: strong grades large orebody with low stripping ratios a simple beneficiation process and a clean high-grade concentrate strong support from the Philippines government.The initial study in 1998 used Gold and Copper price assumptions of $325/oz and $0.95 lb respectively. Today reserves are based on $950 and $2.85. So, being a porphyry with a large reducing grade halo, the deposit now lends itself to extraction on a much larger scale than before, without any significant capital expenditure as a larger open pit now dominates the project.Didipio is a game changer for OceanaGold, so it has been important to learn from history and to capitalise on a strong initial metal production profile. The project sits in a reasonably remote mountainous area of Luzon which sees annual typhoons and numerous short duration high intensity rainfall events and two rivers flowing through the project area, so it has not been without some innovative technical solutions.CITATION:Redden, R, 2012. Research and Technical Services, Department of Mines Western Australia The nine papers received for this technical session cover a very wide range of hydrological problems in various parts of the world. Three of these papers deal with hydrological predictions for new mines, while three are concerned with the prediction of water chemistry. The three remaining papers deal with gas injection as a dewatering tool, discharge formulae verification and the use of a physical model to predict subsurface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining. Hydrological problems in mine planning represent a major risk in many mining operations, booth as a potential life or equipment hazard and a major financial risk. The initial paper selected to review was therefore one by the president of a gold mining company, rather than by one of the specialist scientists, to remind us all that the main reason problems are faced and overcome in the mining industry is usually a commercial one. In one commercial undertaking, the ability to accurately assess future risk is a highly desirable planning tool and hence in mining, the ability to predict the nature and magnitude of hydrological problems is n i-an varxi imnnrfant

Solvent extraction has recently been introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice for the production of a high grade uranium concentrate from El Sherana ore by a sulphuric acid leach and solvent extraction process. The solvent is a 5 per cent solution of tri(iso-octyl)amine in kerosene modified with 4 per cent of a long chain alcohol. The stripping reagent is a molar solution of sodium chloride.Preliminary testing for the development of the process showed that the leach liquor was quite amenable to the solvent extraction process and that the equilibrium and rate considerations of both the extraction and stripping steps were very favourable.The industrial plant contains four stages of extraction, three stages of chloride stripping and one stage of secondary carbonate stripping. An internal type of mixer-settler is used for the stagewise contact, the design being based on tests with model equipment.The performance and control of the industrial plant is satisfactory; 99·7 per cent of the uranium is recovered for a loss of 0·3 gallons of kerosene and 0· 4 pounds of amine per 1,000 gallons of liquor treated.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of El Sherana uranium ore from the South Alligator River valley commenced in April, 1959, and thereby introduced into Australian hydrometallurgical practice the unit operation of solvent extraction on an industrial scale. Although there are now some twelve mineral processing plants in the United States and Canada using solvent extraction, its application to the field of primary hydrometallurgy is quite new. Prior to 1956 none of these twelve plants was operating and hydrometallurgical application waslimited to the refining of comparatively high grade uranium compounds and fission products from nitrate and nitric acid solutions.

In the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area, the layered rocks have been subdivided into two sequences, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower sequence is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and large acid sills. The upper sequence is unconformable on the lower one.In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and pass into conglomerates. Th:s passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds.These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked by areas of shore-line conditions.Repeated igneous activity, including vulcanism, has occurred along the flanks of this basin. These different igneous and sedimentary environments have played an important part in the primary distribution of metals.A chronology of all basic and acid igneous activity, as well as sedimentat:on, has been established for the Precambrian of this area.INTRODUCTIONThe subdivision of Archaean rocks into those of basic igneous or of sedimentary origin has formed the basis for the nomenclature appearing in past literature. These subdivisions were distinguished as greenstones (predominantly basic igneous rocks) and whitestones (predominantly sediments), and it was generally accepted that the greenstones were stratigraphically lower in the sequence than the whitestones.Recent studies show that, between Kalgoorlie and Norseman, basic igneous rocks interfinger with and pass laterally to sediments, and that basic volcanic rocks occur at different stratigraphic levels. In many operations the use of less electrochemically reactive grinding media in the first grinding stage (for example, rod milling and high aspect ratio SAG milling) is rarely considered. Therefore, in reality a plant may inadvertently be using a 'mixed' media charge. That is, whilst employing inert grinding media during secondary grinding, electrochemically active forged steel grinding media may be used in the primary grinding stage. This paper discusses the impact of such a circuit on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a refractory gold ore. The Wiluna concentrator has two grinding circuits operating in parallel. Line 1 operates a single ball mill in closed circuit with cyclones, and utilises high chrome grinding media, while the second circuit (Line 2) consists of a rod mill (with forged steel rods) in series with a ball mill, which also utilises high chrome grinding media. The cyclone overflows from both circuits are combined to feed a sulfide flotation circuit. Pulp chemistry surveys were completed around both grinding circuits, and laboratory flotation tests were conducted on the cyclone overflows. The results demonstrate clearly that the rod mill/ball mill circuit operated at significantly lower Eh and dissolved oxygen values, while the percentage EDTA extractable iron was considerably higher, when compared to the single stage ball milling circuit. These variations in pulp chemistry had a marked negative impact on the laboratory rougher flotation response, and suggests that plant performance may be affected.

At the LKAB, Iron Ore Mine, Kiruna, Sweden a preliminary investigation into the reliability characteristics of a fleet of load-haul-dump machines has shown that the hydraulic system is one of the most critical parts. Therefore, hydraulic system was selected for study and analysis through condition monitoring devices so that failure can be controlled or at least the failure consequences can be minimized.The hydraulic system has two different problems; one is that the contamination level is too high and the other is high temperature during operation. At high temperature, seals and tubes are a problem, because they stiffen due to carbonization, which leads to increasing leakage. The pumps and restrictions were responsible for the main temperature increase.

Orebodies are defined in economic terms in that they must satisfy conditions determined by costs of mining, extraction and marketing before being so described. Despite this they have an essential chemical character as specialized products resulting from geochemical differentiation, and it is surprising that so little basic geochemical research has been carried out with respect to ore occurrence and that prospecting methods based on geochemical principles are not more widely applied.Many exploration geologists associate geochemistry with analytical techniques applied to the detection of dispersed traces of metals from actual orebodies. Geochemical research, applied to economic geology, goes far beyond this limited field and the purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects of such research and its use in formulating exploration principles.THE GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND TO MINERAL OCCURRENCE AND EXPLORATIONThe three aspects of economic mineral deposits to which geochemical research can be of use in determining ore guides are genesis, control of deposition and mode of dispersion from orebodies after emplacement. Prospecting for mineral deposits is primarily based on theories of ore occurrence which deal with the genetic and depositional influences controlling localization of ore. Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.

Gravity methods of recovering alluvial gold are not very efficient at particle sizes below about 0.1mm. Whereas such gold may not have been economic to recover in the past, the same may not be true today. Centrifugal concentrators, like the Knudsen and Knelson bowls, are showing promise after an inauspicious start, at least in New Zealand. The large proportion of heavy mineral in many auriferous beach sands and the natural hydrophobicity of fine gold should make flotation an attractive contender for its recovery. The conventional mechanical flotation cell is effective, but roughing, scavenging and cleaning are necessary to achieve both high recovery and low mass yield. More problematic is the difficulty of maintaining coarse and dense sands in suspension. The air sparged hydrocyclone is effective at recovering fine gold from a fine Colarado River sand, but is not effective for the coarse and dense beach sands of New Zealand. The flotation column shows much promise for these sands, when recoveries of over 80% and mass yields of less than 1% can be achieved in a single pass. The froth separator of the USSR and flash flotation could also be worthy contenders. It is felt that flotation could be limited to naturally and artificially de-slimed concentrates.

Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite û montmorillonite-kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a CO2-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. The possibility of removing the phos phorus and sulphur contained in steelmaking slag has been studied by observing directly through the microscope melts heated on Pt- filaments. After a CaO crystal was placed in the molten slag, distributions of P, S and other elements formed around the CaO crystal were determined with the aid of EPMA. The results indicated that a layer of 2CaO SiO2 is formed on solid CaO in CaO-Si02 melts. Then between CaO and the newly formed compound the molten slag tends to migrate through cracks. For higher Fe 2 03 contents, the layers of the compounds 2CaO.Si02 and 3CaO SiO2 formed around the CaO crystal are not continuous but look more like particles, which promotes the dissolution of CaO. Phosphorus in slag was found to be enriched in the 2CaOòSi02 layer. Phosphorus in the 2CaO SiO2 phase is not related to the primary slag composition, being about 5-7% P205.. Sulphur in slag,as well as the phos- phorus,was concentrated in the 2CaO.Si02 phase. Disintegration due to weathering observed for slags produced in these investigations appeared to be due principally to hydration of lime.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...
