Throughout its history the mining industry has focused on the highest-grade deposits sited in the most convenient locations. The burgeoning global population and higher standards of living not only increase the demand for mineral products but also make it harder to mine and process them. The future will include the development of lower-grade, more complex orebodies, and orebodies in difficult locations. The industry will be expected to provide for humanityÆs needs while reducing its environmental footprint and maintaining profitability. This paper reviews some of the likely adaptations in mineral processing that will occur over the next 20 years. The challenges inherent in adapting to lower grade and more complex materials might be exacerbated by such factors as the availability of water and low-cost energy. In underground mining, higher energy costs are likely to foster further developments in underground preconcentration, especially for ores that can be upgraded at relatively coarse sizes. The adoption of underground crushing could also render material amenable to semi-dry preconcentration options such as might be achieved by the rotary classifier developed by CSIRO and being commercialised by RCR Tomlinson, or more modern versions of the hand-sorting of ore that use sensors based on colour or other suitable rock properties. The cement industry and some gold roasters have used the alternative of dry grinding and classification, which might also have a part to play in dry processing. There is also likely to be increased interest in options such as in situ leaching that further minimise the surface disturbance. Underground operations will have to balance the energy savings from reducing the amount of material brought to the surface and reduced surface disturbance against the practical limitations of installing and maintaining processing equipment underground. On the other hand, surface disturbance and energy issues in open cut operations will be balanced by potentially lower mining costs and higher overall recovery from the deposit.

The reduction in man's contribution to the Greenhouse effect will only be achieved by a number of small steps. Some steps will absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere in slightly greater quantities, others will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide generated. This paper deals with the reduction of carbon dioxide by improving the combustion efficiency of petroleum fuels. Until recently most reductions in fuel consumption and air pollution have been brought about through mechanical adjustments to combustion equipment. Since the development of tetraethyl lead, little has been done to chemically modify combustion reactions to improve fuel efficiency or reduce emissions. During the past five years Australian laboratory and field trials with ferrous picrate treatment have demonstrated significant and economic gains in the combustion efficiency of diesel fuels. These studies have revealed that even under ideal conditions in diesel engines, carbon monoxide (CO) momentarily saturates the combustion chamber. This state reduces combustion rates, peak pressure and power and increases the risk of pollution. Theoretical, laboratory and field data are presented which support the mechanism by which the ferrous catalyst accelerates the oxidation of CO to the terminal CO2 thus reducing fuel consumption and the undesirable combustion products accompanying the CO saturation of combustion environments. While this paper deals principally with diesel fuels commonly used in mining operations, the catalytic effect of the ferrous ion is also shown to significantly reduce fuel consumption by petrol engines thereby promising a means to reduce the much larger contributions to the Greenhouse gases by automobiles.

The ore mined from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangano-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations.Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14 - 18 per cent lead; 3.0 - 4.5 oz silver per tonne, and 9.5 - 12.0 per cent zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from six to eight per cent lead, 1.5 oz silver per ton, 18 - 25 per cent zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals, calcite, rhodonite, bustamite - are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce:1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufftcient granular material to be utilised as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of jigging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Two primary grinding sections were installed, each consisting of two 5 ft diameter by 10ft long tube mills loaded with flint pebbles working in closed circuit with four 3 ft diameter by 3 ft wide revolving screens covered with 22mesh Toncap woven wire screen with 0.57 mm opening. Each section carried a circulating load of 28.3 tons per hour for a jig.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

Turbidite-hosted, mesothermal lode gold deposits in Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Buller Terrane, western South Island have a similar geological history and genesis to the Paleozoic lode gold deposits ofVictoria, Australia and Nova Scotia, Canada. In all three regions the gold deposits are hosted by interbedded meta-sandstone and meta-argillite that have been folded and regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies, and locally in Nova Scotia to amphibolite facies. The gold deposits are typically narrow, structurally controlled quartz veins associated with dilatant zones in reverse faults or fold-related fractures. The principal vein types include: bedding parallel or concordant veins, discordant veins, saddle reefs, and stockwork veins. En-echelon and "ac" type veins are sometimes also gold-bearing in Nova Scotia. The contrasting competency of the host meta-argillite and meta-sandstone beds is an important factor in vein formation, particularly for the bedding parallel veins, which are typically developed within meta-argillite beds or along the contacts between meta-argillite and meta-sandstone. Veins found within meta-sandstone units are generally discordant. The deposits in Victoria are well known for their bedding-parallel veins, saddle reefs ( Bendigo ) and leather jacket reefs (Ballarat). Bedding-parallel veins are also common in Nova Scotia , along with a few examples of saddle reefs. In contrast, vein formation probably occurred later in the deformation history of the Reefton and Lyell goldfields, with most veins being bedding discordant and more typically aligned with the axial plane cleavage of the folds rather than bedding planes. The quartz lodes in one deposit, Globe-Progress, strike approximately perpendicular to the bedding and fold axes. No saddle reefs have been recorded from the Buller Terrane. Mesothermal vein morphology reflects the amount of fmite strain, the strain rate, competency contrasts, lithotypes, and the confirming pressures to which the system was exposed. On the basis of comparable depositional depths and rheologies of the host rocks, a controlling factor influencing the development of different vein styles (and timing) might be finite strain, as exemplified by the tightness of folding in the host rocks. Folding appears to be tighter in the Victorian rocks than in either the Buller Terrane or Nova Scotian rocks.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. The products required by customers today have become far more complex and consequently more demanding to handle. And thereÆs the dilemma. Nowadays, people tend to stick to a trade for just a few years instead of for a lifetime, and this means that the customerÆs employees cannot be expected to get more than general knowledge of how to handle modern mining and construction equipment. To meet this challenge, major steps are being taken by suppliers to make their æmusclesÆ more user-friendly. Also the supplier is assuming a larger share of responsibility for the product including operators training, supply maintenance services and, in many cases, performance guarantees. In other words, the supplier is today supplying a function or an activity rather than just muscles. Some of the new generation drill rigs have been on the market for a few years and reliable experience has been collected and is addressed in this paper. Some of the information is well supported by figures while others are just statements from users of the rigs.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927 - 1928 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr F G Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgoorlie mine, and Mr Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preserved from the Kalgoorlie mine by Mr A E Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection of MrS F C Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and 'weissite', muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

The Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit, located at the southern end of the Waitekauri Corridor, Hauraki Goldfield, occurs as quartz veins with associated alteration haloes. Integrated geophysical studies were undertaken to determine the expression, location, and extent of these alteration zones. Aeromagnetic data show an extensive, magnetic æquietÆ zone over Karangahake and the southern Rahu Ridge that represents a zone of magnetite destruction resulting from hydrothermal alteration. Analytic signal data are used to define the boundary of this zone; the resulting 6 km2 area is elongate north-south with an irregular boundary. A detailed gravity survey over the area reveals a positive residual gravity anomaly, up to 30 gu in amplitude, over the Karangahake deposit. Density measurements on near-surface rocks give low values indicating that the source of this positive gravity anomaly must be deep; possible causative bodies include an igneous intrusion or dense sulfide mineralisation. To the west and east of the host Waipupu Formation, strong gravity gradients of 100 gu/km and 65 gu/km reflect the faulted boundary of the Hauraki Rift, and the edge of the Waihi Basin respectively. High resolution airborne radiometric data define a 2.2 km2 area of potassium enrichment. This area is elongate north-south and has an irregular boundary. It coincides approximately with the centre of the magnetic quiet zone and the peak of the gravity high, and correlates with known areas of intense mineralisation. Anomalously high potassium counts and elevated K/Th ratios correlate with areas of potassic alteration that have undergone K-metasomatism. Underexplored portions of this zone may indicate areas of gold-silver prospectivity. Combined geophysical data therefore reveal the extent of hydrothermal alteration, and the central zone of Kmetasomatism that is most likely to contain orebodies.

For the past 45 years, the casting of refined lead ingots by The Broken Hill Asso- ciated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (B.H.A,S,) at Port Pirie has been mainly by use of manually operated rotary casting wheels of Newnam design. This style of operation was quite satisfactory as far as standard of product was concerned, but was manually intensive and a relatively high cost operation. With most other large scale lead producers already using automated-casting equipment, an investigation which commenced in 1966, progressed through stages of enquiry, design and development until the present plant commenced trial operations in late 1973, and fully operative in late 1974. While certain features of the plant are sed on overseas practices the plant was signed and built within Australia to BRAS ecifications. As constructed it consists two almost identical casting lines each pable of producing 25 kg ingots at 25 tonnes r hour using straight line casting machines d automated stacking weighing and strapping

A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".

At Sams Creek a peralkaline granite porphyry dyke hosts gold-bearing sulfide-quartz-siderite veins. The granite dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite, and has thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The mineralised veins and the granite and lamprophyre dykes have been deformed during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with early magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration overprinted by sulfide and quartz-siderite veins and quartz-perthite-albitesiderite-pyrite-rutile¦sericite alteration assemblages. The sulfide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, with minor quartz and siderite. The gold contains significant silver (up to 30.8 wt per cent) and ranges in fineness from 692 to 844. Immiscible liquid-rich fluid inclusions, in quartz protected from recrystallisation by enclosing arsenopyrite, contain carbonic liquid that homogenised at temperatures of 320 - 355¦C. The Sams Creek gold deposit is distinguished from the orogenic gold deposit type by its stockwork veining, magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration, high sulfide content, ore mineralogy and the absence of mineralisation in the metapelite country rocks. Features of the Sams Creek gold deposit do not fit neatly into existing classifications of granite-related gold-bearing deposits. The peralkaline composition of the Sams Creek granite and the absence of molybdenite and paucity of chalcopyrite, are major points of difference with gold-rich porphyry copper deposits. The presence of a lowsulf idation-state ore mineral assemblage, carbonate alteration and carbonic fluid inclusions at Sams Creek are typical of many of the reduced granitic intrusion-related type of gold deposit. However, notable differences are: the reduced type granites are metaluminous and calc-alkaline; and Sams Creek only has high As in contrast to elevated Bi, W, As, Mo, Te, and Sb in the reduced type. The Sams Creek deposit also shows affinities with gold deposits associated with alkaline magmatism, and it appears to be a new variant of this type as an As-Au deposit associated with a peralkaline granite and lamprophyre.

The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. The state-owned Swedish company LKAB is one of the world's largest producers of iron ore. LKAB mines the greater part of its ore underground, and very high efficiency is vital if it is to compete successfully with open pit mines. Consequently, computers and OR are essential parts of the company's operations. This paper gives some examples of success- ful computer and OR applications at LKAB, coupled with some remarks on the costs and benefits of OR.

Use of Impact Crushing for the Enrichment of Low-Grade Colemanite Concentrates This paper presents the results of an investigation into the enrichment of -25+3 mm low grade colemanite concentrates exploiting differential breakage properties of various minerals associated within the ore sample. Boric acid production process requires concentrates containing at least 42 per cent B2O3, hence concentrates below this grade either stock piled or further treated to increase B2O3 content. The low grade concentrate is obtained as a by-product of Emet Colemanite Concentrator and the B2O3 content may vary around 37 - 38 per cent. The sample used in the experimental studies assays 37.52 per cent B2O3. In the experimental procedures the sample was crushed using a laboratory size horizontal shaft impact crusher and the products were classified into different size fractions by screening so that any improvement by size could be observed. In the tests the effects of parameters such as the revolution speed of the crusher and heat treatment was checked. Test results prove that boron contents show a tendency to increase as the particle size decreases. As a result of the experimental studies a colemanite concentrate assaying 42.13 per cent B2O3 is produced with 76.55  per cent recovery. Arsenic content is seen to change inversely proportional with the B2O3 content of the concentrate such that it drops from 1016 ppm from the as received sample to 676 ppm in the concentrate.

The pyrite-sphalerite-galena and barite orebodies at the Rosebery mine are concordant with the shale host rock and have been deformed into one system of folds with an associated axial plane cleavage. The folds are tight and overturned with east-dipping axial planes. Folds in the sulphide ore are commonly disharmonic, particularly between adjacent bands of different composition.Concentric style folds occur in the competent bands, e.g. pyrite-rich bands. Similar style folds are predominant in the less competent sphalerite-galena-rich bands and also in the shale of the host rock. The trends and plunges of the fold hinge-lines are variable but axial planes are of reasonably constant orientation throughout the mine area. The folds in the orebodies are of limited axial extent, approximating to conical folds, and are arranged in en echelon patterns. The fold system was possibly formed in one period of folding by heterogeneous strain that may have been caused by the presence of a mass of tectonically mobile sulphide ore. Lineations parallel to the ore/host rock contacts appear to reflect movement between the ore and the host rock during folding.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.
