The base metal industry mines and processes hundreds of million tonnes of ore per annum to produce saleable products and large tonnages of waste by-products such as tailings. These ores usually contain less than 1 wt per cent of toxic elements (As, Sb, Bi, Cd, Se, Te, Hg, etc), which are subsequently treated with the other components in the ore during the production of concentrate through to saleable metal products. The deportments of minor elements across the various unit operations of a process flow sheet do not normally receive the attention that the major elements receive. However, these minor elements can have a major influence on the quality of the products as well as an economic and environmental impact. Therefore, a high degree of control over their deportments is a key step in reducing their dispersion in the biosphere. Ongoing work at CSIRO has been examining minor element deportments across unit processes used for smelting and refining and the options for early removal of minor elements, as well as methods for safe disposal of some toxic elements. This paper provides an overview of the R&D activities undertaken at CSIRO to develop tools and methodologies for improved management of minor elements during the processing of sulfide ores.

Using normal low pressure filtration methods for the dewatering of fine china clays, the best that can be achieved is cakes with about 30% moisture. In order to get the moisture levels down to acceptable levels the traditional method used is thermal drying, which is both costly and dust creating. It was to improve this process that ECC International embarked upon a programme of development of filtration equipment using high pressure to achieve significantly lower moisture levels. This development work investigated several design philosophies and culminated in the production of two quite different solutions. The High Pressure Plate Press uses round plates / chambers of one metre diameter and a filtration pressure of 70 bar. This press is fully automatic and produces a surface dry cake that has sufficient plasticity for the further processing that is required on specific qualities of china clay. The TUBE PRESS on the other hand uses a unique design configuration and operates at a filtration pressure of 100 or 140 bar, depending upon the model. The TUBE PRESS produces a brittle, surface dry cake that is easy to handle and a filtrate that is usually crystal clear. The TUBE PRESS achieves a much higher degree of separation than is possible with conventional equipment, which is particularly important if the filtrate is the product. Over the past 15 years plants incorporating both HP Plate Presses and TUBE PRESSES have been installed in the china clay operations of ECC International and are giving excellent trouble free service. The TUBE PRESS has also proved to be extremely versatile, effectively dewatering a wide range of fine particled slurries, in a number of diverse industries.

Deposits of the Reefton Goldfield, West Coast, New Zealand, are hosted on N-NE striking, upright folds of the Greenland Group. High-grade quartz lodes are hosted on axial planar shears, typically have short strike lengths, and form shoots that pitch steeply on the hosting shears. Deposits within the field area of a detailed structural study share these characteristics. Field mapping and microstructural analysis have demonstrated that the Greenland Group was affected by a multideformational sequence. Gold mineralisation is hosted on shears axial planar to the F2 folds, but occurred during a subsequent deformation event (D4). Deformation during D4 resulted from N-NE directed shortening, near parallel to the trend of the F2 folds. This event produced F4 kink folds that were accommodated by layer parallel slip on S2 parallel shears, gold mineralisation during D4 being confined to the dilational hinges of F4 kink folds. The semi-brittle nature of D4 allowed the formation of stockwork veining and disseminated mineralisation within the F4 hinge zones. Most deposits within the goldfield are similar to those within the field area, and are interpreted to have been mineralised during D4. The two largest known deposits within the goldfield, however, are distinct. The Blackwater Deposit, striking parallel to the hosting folds, has a combined strike length of 1 km. The Globe-Progress Deposit is hosted on an E-W striking discordant shear in which a brittle zone of disseminated mineralisation encompasses high-grade quartz lodes. The characteristics that distiguish the Globe and Blackwater deposits may be due to formation before and after D4 respectively. Detailed field mapping in the vicinity of known deposits throughout the goldfield will further refine the relationships between the F2 folds, later deformations and the localisation of ore deposits. Additional mapping may also help constrain the position, orientation and extent of additional orebodies.

THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. For deposits where a full assay suite of elements/oxides is available and where several variables are critical to the evaluation of the deposit, it is desirable for the estimated block values of all elements/oxides to sum to 100 per cent of the weight per cent. This is difficult to achieve in practice and the estimation methods used need to be designed to minimise bias of the key elements/oxides by ensuring that block estimates are consistent with the individual assays and that the estimated totals are as close as possible to 100 per cent.This paper presents a case study of two domains within a magnetite hematite deposit, one with a high level of drilling classified as Measured and one with a lower density of drilling classified as Indicated. Several estimation methods were tested to evaluate their ability to maintain consistency of the proportions of each element/oxide and sum to 100 per cent. The following methods were evaluated: ordinary kriging, co-kriging, inverse distance and min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) all as implemented in the Geovariances Isatis software.The comparisons showed that the MAF method produced the most robust estimates in terms of block totals and that grades and tonnages at the reporting cut-off were not significantly different between methods. William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. Potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock contained in dumps formed as a result of open cut mining of metalliferous orebodies are conventionally sealed or covered using a near-saturated, low permeability compacted clay layer, protected with a mulch layer and/or vegetated growth medium. The purpose of the compacted clay layer is to limit oxygen diffusion and the infiltration of rainfall into the dump. Where the aerial extent of the PAF waste rock dump is large, or where suitable clayey material is in short supply, it may be difficult to source sufficient suitable clayey material to form the cover. The paper describes a laboratory-based investigation of combining inert waste rock and tailings to form an alternative seal or cover material. The inert waste rock was sourced from the trafficked surface of a non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock dump, with a maximum particle size of about 100 mm. This was combined with NAF thickener underflow tailings slurry in various mass ratios, and the resulting mixtures tested for their particle size distribution, compaction characteristics, soil water characteristics (relationship between suction and volumetric moisture content), and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The mixtures tested ranged in consistency from those dry enough to be compactable, to those with the consistency of wet concrete that lend themselves to placement without the need for compaction. The laboratory test results showed that the suitability of the mixtures as seal or cover materials is very dependent on the particle size distribution of the mixture, with well-graded mixtures having substantial fines performing best.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

The Portia Au and North Portia Cu-Au-Mo prospects are located on a magnetic structure called the Benagerie Ridge Magnetic Complex, comprising varying pyrite-bearing Proterozoic albitite, phyllite and carbonaceous phyllite. The prospects are covered by up to 75 m of Cainozoic sediments, which comprise from top down, surface soils, Quaternary sediments, the Miocene Namba Formation and the (Late-Oligocene?) Portia Unit.The Portia Unit is dominantly clay-rich with local sand-rich base and it fills palaeo-topographic lows and a palaeo-valley that incised into the weathered basement rock (saprolite). This sedimentary unit hosts the majority of the Au grains found at Portia, with additional Au grains also present in the underlying saprolite. The North Portia prospect comprises saprolite hosted Cu-Au-Mo, with elevated concentrations of As-Pb-V present in the northern part of the prospect. These two groups of elements are delineated using factor analysis, and are regarded as the pathfinder elements for the North Portia mineralisation.Secondary Cu minerals including covellite and native Cu are present in the lower saprolite, and are stable under reducing conditions in the saturated zone.In the upper saprolite (unsaturated), Cu, Au, As, Mo and Pb are associated with Fe-oxides, mainly goethite and hematite. Saprolite leached of Fe generally contains low pathfinder elements concentrations.

Effects of High Pressure Grinding Rolls on Platinum-Bearing Ores and the Flotation Response as Compared to the Conventional Ball Mill Three major PGM ore types from the Bushveld Complex of South Africa: Merensky, UG2 and Platreef were comminuted with the use of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The influence of the feed characteristics and the various operational and design features of the HPGR on energy consumption, throughput, mineral liberation and PGM flotation recovery were investigated. The test work variables included two feed top sizes of 12 mm and 6 mm, specific grinding forces ranging between 3 - 7.5N/ mm2 and zero gaps of 1.5 mm and 3 mm. The results show that the influence of the HPGR operational and design features on energy consumption, throughput, mineral liberation and PGM recovery are ore dependent. The size reduction-specific energy relationships show that the most energy efficient utilisation of the HPGR for Platreef ore was at the lower specific grinding force of 3N/mm2 and the zero gap at 3 mm. For Merensky and UG2 ore on the other hand, the most energy efficient operation was at the higher specific grinding force of 7.5N/mm2 and the zero gap of 1.5 mm. At a specific energy input of 3 kWh/t, reduction ratios (F50/P50) of 6.5, 3.8 and 10 were obtained for Merensky, UG2 and Platreef, respectively for feed top sizes of 12mm. Further application of the HPGR as a pregrinding stage to a ball mill showed a 25 - 30 per cent increase in throughput for Merensky and UG2 ore. Batch flotation tests performed on selected samples appear to indicate that ore comminuted with the ball mill had superior grades compared with that ground with the HPGR. However, Merensky and UG2 ore comminuted at different HPGR operating conditions showed distinctions in PGM recovery. Platreef on the other hand did not appear to show any differences. Therefore, this study highlights the significance of ore type and operating variables in HPGR applications with regards to energy efficiency, throughput and PGM recovery.

Twenty years of effort in developing the use of computers in the design and control of mineral treatment circuits has resulted in a sound base for future widespread application of the techniques.. The intent of this paper is to speculate to some extent about future applications of computer related techniques in the mineral extraction industries. The use of simulation methods for the analysis and design of circuits is discussed. In the area of process control, computers have been largely devoted to process monitoring and reporting tasks. The application of computers for the total control and optimization of complete plants is considered. Finally, the role of computer based modelling studies for definitions of optimum treatment flowsheets is suggested.

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

A shift in the present day oil exploration scenario from West Coast can be foreseen keeping in mind peak of exploration in Cambay Basin and fast pace of development in Bombay High and its associated fields by the end of this century. Shifts in exploration from structural traps to stratigraphic traps, techno- logical development to drill in deep waters, improving economic situation for oil ventures and proven oil and gas potential of East Coast basins suggest that Indian oil explorat- ion scene will be at its peak along east coast during early 21st century. Hydrocarbon shows in Poonch and Jawalamukhi in Punjab Basin, improvements in drilling to greater depths, better seismic data aquisition, good source rock potential of Subathus and its equivalents and large geologi- cally mapped structures will reopen new avenues for explorationists. Not much exploration effort has been put up so far in Ganga Basin. Keeping in mind size of the basin, sedimentary thickness involved, presence of algal matter deposited in shallow marine environment & higher hydrocarbon indications warrant active exploration. Gondwanas in India having such a large sedimentary area can not be ignored keeping in view generation and production from the non marine sediments of Kenya, Chad, Sudan, Gadon and China. Gondwanas become all the more important in view of gas production from their equivalents-Karoos in Ethiopia and South Africa. In all, above mentioned changes can be predicted in Indian oil exploration scenario during 21st century.

A pilot scale experimental investigation of the condensation of zinc vapour from smelter off-gases was performed in conjunction with a mathematical modelling study of the system. The work investigated the feasibility of using the high heat and mass transfer rates associated with a fluidised bed to condense zinc directly from smelter off-gases containing zinc vapour. Of particular interest was whether zinc would revert to zinc oxide during the process of condensation, and whether a zinc fog would form and be carried out of the condenser. A 0.1 m diameter fluidised bed condenser was mounted on the top of a 200 kVA DC electric arc furnace in which mixtures of vapours and gases were generated at 1150 - 1300¦C. The gas/vapour mixtures investigated included Zn/N2, Zn/N2/CO/CO2 and Zn/N2/H2/H2O. Greater than 90 per cent of the zinc was deposited on the zircon sand bed of the condenser, and there was no sign of zinc oxide formation, suggesting that the rate of heat transfer was faster than the reaction rate for zinc oxide formation. There was also no evidence that fog was being formed in the condenser. Using the methods of Kunii and Levenspeil (1991), a mathematical model was developed to predict the behaviour of the fluidised bed condenser. The model enabled the distribution of gas/vapour temperature and bed temperature to be determined as a function of distance from the condenser inlet. Similarly the partial pressure of zinc vapour in the gas mixture, and hence the mass transfer rate of zinc to the particles, was determined. Experimental data allowed validation of the predicted bed and gas/vapour temperatures.

Permeability and fluid pathways in fracture-controlled hydrothermal systems are governed by a dynamic competition between permeability-creation processes and permeability-destruction processes. Permeability evolution is coupled with the evolution of fluid pressure and stress states. Key permeability-creation processes are micro-scale to macroscopic fracture growth, and the generation of damage zones during co-seismic slip on faults or aseismic creep on faults and shear zones. The competing permeability-destruction processes include crack-healing and sealing, compaction and pore cementation. High rates of permeability destruction in hydrothermal systems require ongoing permeability enhancement to sustain high fluid fluxes and ore genesis.   In aseismic regimes, competition between permeability-creation processes and permeability-destruction processes can lead to continuous flow in deep level hydrothermal systems. However, in seismogenic regimes, rapid co-seismic permeability-enhancement is followed by progressive permeability-destruction in the intervening interseismic periods, and leads to episodic flow. The results of high pressure experiments are used to illustrate how pore fluid factors and stress states are dynamically coupled with permeability evolution in hydrothermal regimes. Particularly in the seismogenic mid- to upper crust, large changes in permeability during the seismic cycle govern relative rates of change of fluid pressure around active faults and shear zones. Rapid, post-seismic recovery of pore fluid pressures, relative to rates of shear stress recovery, leads to growth of hydrofracture networks prior to successive fault rupture events.   Pre-rupture hydrofracture networks do not develop where post-rupture fluid pressure recovery is modest relative shear stress recovery. At elevated temperatures, low rates of pore fluid pressure recovery relative to shear stress recovery promote ductile shear failure and grain-scale permeability enhancement within shear zones prior to rupture events.   The influence of pore fluid pressure cycling, shear stress cycling, and deformation processes in controlling the evolution of permeability, flow localisation, and flow anisotropy at the deposit scale are illustrated for mesothermal and epithermal lode gold systems.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. Thermo Fisher Scientific is a supplier of samplers, instruments, analysers and consumables to the mining industry under the Thermo Scientific brand. The critical need to provide a representative sample to the analyser has played a pivotal role in product development. Products discussed are the Analysis and Sampling Station (AnStat) for mineral slurries, the Coal Quality Manager (CQM) and the prototype Bore Hole Analyser (BHX) with optional drill chip recovery system. Analytical techniques used in the above products are XRF, PGNAA and LIBS respectively. The company also designs and supplies conventional mechanical sampling equipment and complete sampling systems for bulk material applications (historical Ramsey brand). These products and application of them are presented.

One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.
