Mines are typically located in remote, inhospitable locations and movement of materials between site, processor and port are often at risk from extreme weather events. Mining companies have recorded multiple supply chain, production and logistics delays caused by climatic events. Recent analyses of extreme temperature and rainfall events (90th and 99th percentile values) for 1960 to 1985 and 1986 highlighted regionalised increases in the frequency and intensity of extremes. The trajectory of this change is likely to be maintained (IPCC, 2014) in regions where increases have occurred historically, suggesting that some parts of the industry may be faced with management challenges beyond current experience (Hodgkinson et al, 2010; Loechel, Hodgkinson and Moffat, 2012). Reliance on historical data to plan for extremes (such as scheduling production downtime to reduce impact) will become increasingly ineffective as the data become less representative of future conditions. Importantly, mine site remediation and closure management need to consider the future climate to ensure rehabilitation is sustainable under changing conditions.Vulnerability assessments and risk-reducing adaptation will become more common as the industry reaches to secure both a mine’s longevity and the industry’s reputation as shareholders and clients become less tolerant of repeated or prolonged interruptions (Hodgkinson, Hobday and Pinkard, 2014). Climate-resilient new mines may be planned using site planning tools combined with knowledge of future climate scenarios. Mineral processing is characterised by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high-grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customer’s requirement for product purity and consistent quality increases.Over recent years beneficiation techniques for iron ore fines have become more important in order to achieve a maximised utilisation of ore resources and to produce competitive products according to international standards.Many high capacity iron ore beneficiation plants that target the production of fines focus on gravity separation processes using fluidised bed classifiers and spirals or wet high intensity magnetic separators as an alternative. This paper demonstrates the suitability of utilising the allflux® two-stage fluidised bed classifiers to treat iron ore particles up to 2 mm in size as well as showing how the high capacity gaustec® wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) technology offers several advantages compared to other WHIMS technology.The combination of the allflux® and gaustec® technologies offer the following benefits:The two-stage fluidised bed classification extracts a significant amount of concentrate from the feed. This in turn reduces the feed capacity required for the gaustec® WHIMS located downstream.The second classification stage produces a -0.5 + 0.1 mm product and a -0.1 mm product. The efficiency of the magnetic separation on these classifi ed products is high due to optimised settings for each size fraction.

Northparkes Mines is developing the E26 Lift 1 North block cave mine, which is adjoined to the existing E26 cave. This paper presents the challenges and methods used to design the ground support system during the feasibility study. Calibrated numerical simulations were conducted to forecast the levels of rock mass damage and to assist the ground support design. Generally, low to moderate rock mass damage is forecast on the extraction and undercut levels. However, poor ground conditions are expected in sheared and preconditioned zones adjacent the existing E26 cave. This will result in difficult ground conditions during development, undercutting and drawbell establishment. Empirical assessments were conducted to make sure the ground support system is able to handle both the static and dynamic load demand, and to accommodate the deformation values. A safety factor of 1.5 was used for the designs to cover the unknown rock mass conditions and potential for larger seismic events. Learnings from the E26 Lift 1 and SLC, also mining against the E26 cave, are incorporated into the design. Fibrecrete, mesh and resin bolts / mechanical anchors are the primary ground support system used, and cable bolts for intersections with a span of more than 6 m. Following undercutting and during the operating life of the mine, secondary ground support and rehabilitation will be required.

The objectives of grade control remain unchanged but new methods are being developed to attain them. Since the early-1990s, an improvement in the power of mine site computers has made the geostatistical tools of conditional simulation more accessible. Optimisation of the grade control process on mine sites now involves two stages: optimisation of the sampling regime and optimisation of the interpretation of ore and waste boundaries. Optimisation of the sampling regime first requires an understanding of the nature of the mineralisation and in particular the impact of particle size on the sampling precision. This relationship, termed the Fundamental Error of sampling, enables an optimum subsampling protocol to be defined for the sample preparation and assaying. However, the actual sample collection method, whether drilling or trenching, must be correctly selected and the sampling grid should be optimised. The relative costs and benefits of various alternative sampling methods and grids can be determined using the method discussed. The use of the grade control data can also be optimised. In the past ore and waste boundaries were often defined using a linear interpolation algorithm that smoothed the data (such as polygonal, sectional, inverse distance squared or even kriging methods). Frequently the relative impact of ore loss and dilution could not be estimated. Conditional simulation to generate equiprobable alternative maps (realisations) can now be adopted to address these issues. A transfer function is then used to evaluate the similarities and differences between the maps. The Ore Block Optimisation (OBO¬) process is a transfer function that produces a three-dimensional model of the optimal ore block outlines. This provides a clear guide for the mining geologist to refine and mine. The nature of the transfer function and the inputs and outputs are discussed. In the past, reconciliation has been the `acid test' for any grade control system. Any ore blocking method based on conditional simulation can make use of the exhaustive data set to ensure that reconciliation between prediction and production will improve significantly. The OBO¬ method provides a guide to the mining geologist to ensure that the best ore blocks are mined. Misclassification between ore and waste is reduced, ore loss and dilution are minimised (and are measurable) and ore is optimally assigned to stockpiles of various cut-off grades. These advantages significantly enhance mine profitability and control of the mined grade.

The Rosia Montana gold deposit is located within the æGolden QuadrilateralÆ area in the Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania, Romania. The deposit is situated approximately 85 kilometres north of the regional centre of Deva, within the province of Alba, at elevations of up to 1100 metres above sea level. The Rosia Montana deposit contains a current resource of 344.07 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.3 grams per tonne (g/t) gold (Au) and 6.0 g/t silver (Ag) for a total (measured, indicated and inferred) contained resource of 14.29 million ounces of gold and 67.00 million ounces of silver. The resource was calculated using a 0.6g/t Au cut-off, a 10 x 10 x 10 metre block size and multiple indicator kriging. The low sulfidation style epithermal mineralisation at Rosia Montana is hosted within Tertiary age dacite intrusions and related vent breccias. Mineralisation is generally disseminated and associated with silica, adularia, illite, pyrite and carbonate alteration of host rocks, with minor late carbonate-base metal veins. Precipitation of precious metals is generally considered to have occurred as a result of over-pressurization, boiling and subsequent brecciation. The dacite intrusions are hosted in Cretaceous shallow marine and deltaic shales and slates, which overlie older Paleozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks within uplifted sections of oceanic sea floor.

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

Since the last paper on mining methods was presented to the Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1:960, numerous advances have been made in drilling and blasting techniques at Mount Morgan. This paper describes the drilling and blasting methods being employed in the open cut. The change over to track mounted percussion drills for all types of primary drilling is almost complete and new techniques such as detergent drilling and pressure loading of ANFO are being applied successfully.

The weathering of different types of base metal deposits in the semi-arid environment of the Lachlan Fold Belt of western New South Wales affects the geochemistry of outcropping ironstones (gossans) and derived soils. W eathering of the pyrite- and pyrrhotite-rich mineralisation at the Elura Zn-Pb-Ag deposit leads to highly acidic conditions and strong depletion of Cd and Zn throughout the profile. There are local attainments of high concentrations of Ag, As, Ba, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb and Sn in the profile and As, Ba, Pb and Sb are still highly anomalous in surficial material (ironstone and soil). However, at Parkers Hill, in the Mineral Hill Field, the primary Zn-Pb mineralisation is pyrite-poor and so weathering is not as acidic as at Elura. Thus, although Ag, As, Cd, Cu, Sb and Zn may be concentrated at various levels in the Parkers Hill weathering profile, Cu and Zn (as well as As, Pb and Sb) are retained in surficial ironstones in essentially the same abundances as in primary mineralisation. Thus, variations in the suite of geochemical indicators present in ironstones and residual soils are likely to reflect differences in the original mineralogy and the degree of acidity produced during the weathering of base metal mineralisation. Hence, an understanding of weathering processes is necessary to fully interpret exploration geochemical data.

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

For up to 75 years large scale coal mining has been carried out within the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria. Withdrawal of groundwater from Tertiary aged sediments within the Latrobe Valley is essential to allow coal mining to proceed to depth. Water within the overburden layers, coal seams and interseams must be drained to avoid flooding during the mining process. The pressure in deeper aquifers must also be lowered to avoid floor heave, batter instability, and to maintain safe operating conditions as the mines develop in size and depth. The cost-effective management of the groundwater systems at and adjacent to the mining operations in the Latrobe Valley is essential to enable the efficient utilisation of the coal resource whilst minimising the environmental impact of this major industry in rural Victoria. Large-scale depressurisation and dewatering programs within the Latrobe Valley mines are managed through the use of detailed groundwater management plans. These incorporate:an extensive monitoring network which extends up to 60 kilometres from the mines; detailed mine scale and regional groundwater and hydrogeological models; and established operational procedures aimed at minimising capital and operational costs associated with the mine groundwater systems. Groundwater extraction system optimisation programs have been introduced into two of the mines with the aim of reducing extraction rates, improved risk management, and reducing operational costs by approximately whilst not compromising mine safety. This paper reviews the aquifer depressurisation and mine dewatering operations of the Latrobe Valley mines and illustrates the techniques utilised to ensure that high artesian pressures do not adversely impact on the mining operations.

Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

Concern has been expressed that Vezins can be biased when used for sampling fine materials if the cutter speed is as high as the 0.6 m/s which is often used. Using modelling techniques that consider airflow as well as particles, we have endeavoured to investigate sampling bias as a function of the size of fine particles, cutter aperture, cutter speed, shape of cutter blades, and the size of the gap between the inlet pipe and the cutter blades. Using crude estimates of the rate of airflow and a simple model of a single particle moving through air led to an approximate rule that bias will not occur due to mechanisms related to airflow for particles larger than about 200 microns; and bias will always occur for particles smaller than about 40 microns. The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.

Recent works suggest that dehydration of subducting slab and consequent hydration and partial melting influences the dynamics of mantle wedge. Plums originating form the subducting slab due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability are responsible for heterogeneous composition of the mantle wedge. Also, occurrence of partial melt in the mantle wedge can trigger dynamic processes like exhumation of UHP rocks in intra-oceanic settings or can influence characteristics of the subduction tectonic regime. These sensors enable real-time data transmission and continuous monitoring of key parameters, providing decision-makers with timely insights. However, the interconnected nature of these devices has introduced complexities, resulting in inconsistencies across operations. Addressing these challenges, this research explores the application of modern digital principles to the mining industry through the Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0). RAMI 4.0 offers a robust framework that integrates digital and physical systems, promoting data transparency, interoperability, and decentralised decision-making. This study aims to briefly introduced framework designed for the unique challenges of mining operations, leveraging the latest digital technologies. The lack of standardisation in the mining sector highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle issues such as interoperability, scalability, security, safety, and repeatability. Establishing standard procedures can ensure smooth interaction between connected devices, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency in the growing IoT ecosystem within the mining industry. Introducing a well-defined reference architecture like RAMI 4.0 can streamline management processes and improve operational efficiency in mining. By adopting this framework, the mining industry can effectively navigate the challenges of digital transformation, leading to a more connected and resilient future. The study concludes that RAMI 4.0, with its structured approach, can significantly enhance the efficiency and productivity of mineral processing operations, fostering sustainable growth in a digitally driven industrial landscape.
