The Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment was established in 1991 to develop innovative technologies for the mining and processing industries, to introduce these technologies to the industry, and where appropriate, to co-operate with equipment manufacturers to transform these technologies into equipment products. It is an unincorporated joint venture between the University of Queensland, CSIRO and the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association. Base funding for the CMTE is provided by the Federal Government as a Co-operative Research Centre.

A thermal neutron irradiation technique using a mCf neutron source has been developed and applied to thp.simultaneous determination of iron and aluminium (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines (-6 mm particle size) on a moving rubber conveyor belt.While the determination of iron with this technique is based on the use of a NaI(TI) detector to monitor the characteristic prompt gamma rays (7.64 MeV) emitted by thermal neutron capture reactions in the iron, the etermination of AI2O3 is based on the use of a second Nal(Tl) detector to monitor the characteristic gamma rays (1.78 MeV) emitted after thermal neutron activation of the aluminium. The second detector is located downstream from the first. Although the speed of the conveyor belt has no direct effect on the iron measurements, it must not exceed about 3 m/min if good accuracy is required for the AI2O3 measurements. Consequently an auxiliary conveyor belt is required in order to avoid interference with normal ore processing.Dynamic trials of the technique, using 1500 kg samples of ore on a 460 mm-wide rubber conveyor belt moving at 1.7 m/min, have demonstrated that the method can achieve accuracies of 0.7% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3. At the present stage of development, it is recommended that lump ore be crushed to a particle size of 6 mm before analysis.In addition to iron and AI2O3 determinations, measurements of total moisture content and bulk density are possible. The determination of Si02 is also feasible, but a separate fast neutron source (e.g., Am-Be) and a separate gamma ray detector are required.

The location of the Inglewood Goldfield is 40 km north-west of Bendigo on the Calder Highway and covers an area of over 1600 hectares. The field was discovered during the 1850s gold rush and over 16 000 people camped on the field. Mining first began in 1859 and since then more than seven tonnes of gold has been removed from four major lines of reef. Most of the gold was won in the period between 1900 and 1940.. Goldquest NL currently has leases over approximately 1550 hectares and through its historical research has identified 142 known reefs.

Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Plato wrote in the 5th Century B.C.* of the devastating changes wrought by man and his animals on the ancient world of the Mediter- ranean. Mine operators are currently in a situation where market forces are acting to reduce profit margins and at the same time, regulatory bodies are insisting on improved mine safety and stability. This means that ground support must be made more cost efficient while maximising operator and equipment safety.A key aspect of ground support efficiency is the 'in the ground' performance. This paper discusses the factors that influence the way rock bolts and cable bolts perform. It highlights the need to know how support efficiency varies in different ground conditions.

In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation:W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The use of dry or near-dry processing technologies, for which the demand for water is small or zero, may be a more radical solution to the water consumption problem; however, it is possible that the introduction of dry processing would bring with it a new set of problems, including dust.

The impulsive loading tests under confining pressure were performed to investigate the dynamic fracture properties of rocks in a triaxial stress state. The apparatus in this study consists of the Split Hopkinson pressure bar, a pressure vessel and hydraulic actuator. Magnetite-quartzite and limestone were selected for the test. A brief descri;tioki is given of nuclear power reactors and their fuels. These fuels are made from a variety of uranium compounds such as uranium dioxide, and uranium carbide as well as uranium metal and its alloys. The various processes used to produce some of these compounds from yellow cake are outlined. Using the natural uranium, heavy water reactor by way of illustration, fabrication of fuel elements is dis- cussed and the characteristics of U02 powder required for this partic- ular fabrication are indicated. The flowsheets and equipment presently in use overseas for production of this type of U02 powder are described. Possible areas where improvements might be made to this conventional process are enumerated and some details are then given of the programme of work which has commenced at the A.A.E.C. Research Establishment to gain experience in the general field of nuclear grade UO20

The McArthur River (HYC) deposit, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, was discovered by Mt Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955. It is one of the largest sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits known. Previous attempts to exploit the deposit have been thwarted by its geographical location, the capital expenditure required to establish an operation and the fine-grained nature of the mineralisation. The steeply dipping western margin of the deposit is covered by up to 25 m of overburden, and lies beneath the McArthur River and its flood plain. Dips are eastward, with the eastern edge of the deposit at a depth of about 400 m below the surface. The average thickness of the deposit is 55 m, and it covers an area of about 1.8 by 1.3 km. Seven stratiform orebodies are interbedded with sedimentary breccia, tuff and poorly mineralised siltstone. Mineralisation consists of finely intergrown sphalerite and galena, hosted by pyritic siltstone of the middle Proterozoic McArthur Group. Selective underground mining of the lower orebodies will extract more than one million tonnes of ore per annum. The dip of the mineralisation demands that mining will be by way of apparent dip room and pillar. Declines will provide access and haulage, and wherever possible development will be in ore. Initially, haulage will be by trackless diesel powered trucks, but these will be replaced by a conveyer system. A single zinc-lead-silver concentrate will be produced from a simple flowsheet. This flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory and demonstrated during an extensive pilot plant campaign. A single stage SAG mill will be utilised to grind the ore down to a P80 = 45 ltm (80 per cent of particles passing 45 ¦rn. As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

On this occasion precedent is departed from in favour of a subject by request.As man has at last, in employing gravimetric and electrometric methods of subsurface research, started on the rational use of divining rods with some knOWledge of their governing laws and principles, and with some ability to interpret the results obtainedfrom them, I was asked to add to the voluminous literature of the quack or empiric divining rod. James Mansergh, the author of Melbourne's sewerage system, in his presidential address before the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1901, admitted he was afraid touse the hazel rod lest in sinking on its indications to some solution.

China has large amounts of iron ore reserves, but iron ore in China, with low-grade, small disseminated particles and many other associated minerals, is difficult to dress. In recent years, with the fast development of China's steel industry, the demand for iron ore has increased markedly. The new technologies in iron ore dressing in China are very effective in processing haematite and other difficult to dress iron ores. The iron ore grade and recovery rate has been improved. This result alleviates the difficulty in iron ore supply in China.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. Robertson Diasol have developed a spectral gamma-gamma tool fully able to withstand borehole conditions. Spectral data is digitally recorded across 256 channels depending on energy levels of the photoelectric effect. Data processing is being developed with the objective of calibrating channel amplitudes to mineral type which will lead to a direct log of selected mineral grade as a continuous trace with depth.

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

Individual specimens of sphalerite from the Broken Hill lode vary considerably in manganese and iron contents, even within the same orebody, so that study of the overall variation of manganese and iron content of the sphalerite calls for the analysis of a large number of specimens. This difficulty has been overcome by analysing a series of recleaned zinc concentrate products, prepared from stope samples and their equivalents, from most of the developed sections of the lode. The analyses reveal that during the formation of the sphalerite the concentrations of iron, manganese and zinc in the mineralizing solutions varied independently of one another from place to place in the forming orebodies, and also in time.The overall pattern of variation of the iron and manganese contents of the sphalerite in the several orebodies of the lode bears a general resemblance to the overall pattern of distribution shown by several other elements, notably, cadmium, lead, bismuth and arsenic. The iron content of the sphalerite indicates that it was formed at a temperature of 6000 C. or higher, but the variation in its iron and manganese contents demonstrates that Kullerud's method for determining the temperature of formation of sphalerite from its iron content must be used with caution if only single specimens of sphalerite are available.INTRODUCTIONThe four chemical analyses available of specimens of practically pure sphalerite from the Broken Hill lode (Table 1) reveal that the manganese content of the sphalerite varies considerably, and that there is a significant variation in its iron content. The variations revealed between individual specimens within the same orebody in the same mine suggest that specimen material is unsatisfactory as a basis for studying the overall manganese and iron contents of Broken Hill sphalerite, unless a great number of specimensis analysed.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. Based on the mode of occurrence, gold is classified into three categories: microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface-bound gold. Microscopic gold, or visible gold, refers to gold minerals in which Au occurs in a substantial amount, such as native gold and electrum. Submicroscopic gold, ie invisible gold, refers to gold contained in the structure of other minerals (mainly sulfides) in minor to trace amounts. Surface gold is the gold that was adsorbed onto the surface of other minerals during mineralisation and subsequent oxidation or metallurgical processing. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on its extractive metallurgy. Gold process mineralogy helps address problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and troubleshooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimisation. This paper will begin with the classification of gold ores, and will focus on gold mineralogy and how it impacts extractive metallurgy through case studies.
