Two independent sets of observations from rifted con-tinental margins suggest a way to reach a quantitative under-standing of how the topography of rifted margins erodes. First, a prominent erosional escarpment, which demarcates an elevated, inland region of low relief from rugged, deeply-incised terrain on the seaward side, is the main feature of the geomorphology of many rifted continental margins. Second, apatite fission track ages from the southeast Australian and southwest Saudi Arabian margins scatter about constant Paleozoic ages over the higher elevations inland from the escarpment, but decrease systematically seaward of the escarpment to near-rifting ages approaching the coastlines. We have developed erosion models based on conservation of mass principles to explain these observations. These models seek to explain the "rejuvenation" of erosion at the time of rifting, initiation of the observed erosional escarpment, and its migration inland with time at a rate on the order of 1 km/10 yr. We find from the modeling that erosion at rift flanks and passive margins is fundamentally a non-linear pro-cess. The erosional development of passive margin topogra-phy has much is common with travelling wave solutions to non-linear diffusion-type problems, and to self-similar sto-chastic processes, such as diffusion-limited aggregation. We suggest that the fission track data record the thermal effects of erosional unroofing at rift flanks and passive continental margins. Models intended to explain the erosional develop-ment of continental margins must explain both the geomor-phology and the fission track observations as well.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

In order to improve the cutting blasting effect of dimension stone mining, the water coupling directional cutting blasting technology was put forward. Based on the test apparatus and special charge configuration, the mechanism of directional cutting blasting was analysed. Directional device changes the initial equilibrium of the total energy of shock wave effect on blasthole wall. The initial directional crack first appears in the blasthole wall that makes contact with the directional device. Then, two cracks are connected along the direction of the blasthole centre line under the action of detonation pressure and water wedge. The plexiglass tests showed that water coupling directional cutting blasting technology produced cracks along with the predetermined direction completely. An investigation was undertaken to devise a new method for reducing dust spread during blasting demolition utilising water tube and detonating cord. Modelling of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with AUTODYN software was initially completed to determine the expected diffusing behaviour of the water tube. The actual behaviour was then captured with high speed videos during each experiment, and each result analysed in detail. Water mist diffusion was generated and analysed by changing three key variables. In sequence, these included changing the location of detonating cord in the tube, the charge quantity and the tube diameter.As a result of experiments and simulation, optimum design for ideal diffusion behaviour was suggested and each behaviour of water mist was classified by diffusing shape of water tube as the design criteria.CITATION:Ko, Y-H, Kim, J-K, Kim, S-J, Park, H, Kim, H-S, Cho, S-H and Yang, H-S, 2015. Reagents used for batch flotation tests were Aeroxanthate-343 & 350, Dow Z-6, & reagent-4037 (from Benambra) as copper collectors; Na2SiO3 & Na2S2O3as gangue depressants; lime & HCl as pH regulators; and pine oil & MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) as flotation frothers. A Denver Sub A flotation cell of capacity 250 gms was used for the batch flotation experiments. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for copper assays and microscopy for selectivity and liberation studies. Melbourne tap water was used throughout the experiments. Unless otherwise stated, the following parameters apply to the flotation experiments: flotation impeller speed - 1300 rpm, pulp density during flotation- 22%, reagents addition - in 4 stages, total conditioning time for collectors - 8 minutes, total flotation time- 9 minutes. A variable quantity of copper mineral collector according to the test in question was added, then conditioned the pulp for 2 minutes. The froth was removed by hand, scraping the full length of the cell at constant depth every 10 seconds. No frother is required for this copper tailing flotation. Four concentrates were collected after addition of collector and conditioning at 2,4,6 and 9 minutes. The pulp volume was maintained at a constant level to yield a constant froth depth.

Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

Over the past 20 years within Australia, there have been a number of incidents at mine sites where ammonium nitrate-based explosives have reacted with certain rock types containing sulfide minerals. These rocks have commonly been referred to as æreactive groundÆ. These reactions have frequently led to fires (particularly in ground susceptible to spontaneous combustion) or premature detonation of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Clearly, this introduces an element of risk when using ammonium nitrate-based explosives in these areas. Dyno Nobel has been proactive in developing ammonium nitrate-based explosive products that can be used in these types of æreactive groundÆ environments that minimise the risk of premature detonations occurring. A system for assessing æreactivityÆ of sulfide containing rocks has been developed that can be used in the field. Previous literature has been reviewed, identifying Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) as the most common method for determining the æreactivityÆ of the ground. In the present investigation, DTA has been rejected as a suitable technique for determining ground reactivity, since it measures thermal reactions at higher temperatures over short time periods, conditions that are unlike those in the field. For example, ground at ambient temperature has been found to react with ammonium nitrate-based explosives over long time periods, reactions that are unable to be evaluated using DTA. Other more suitable techniques have been developed to monitor rock conditions that can be measured in the field and give a good indication of potential ground æreactivityÆ with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Dyno Nobel is currently investigating the reaction mechanisms of spontaneous combustion in reactive ground, the decomposition mechanisms of ammonium nitrate and the role of inhibitors in ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Once complete, this fundamental research will lead to the further development of even lower risk ammonium nitrate-based explosive products for use in æreactive groundsÆ in a variety of mine environments.

Process control computers are finding ever increasing applications within the chemi-cal and mineral processing industries.To purchase a system which fulfils both the immediate and future needs of operating, technical and management groups, requires an appreciation of the capabilities of the system software and the constraints which apply to user development of application software. Early decisions are then required as to who will develop and maintain the software. Rules and conventions must be determined and adhered to if the end result is to be an orderly, well structured and properly documented system. Software development and maintenance represents a substantial, and often hidden, cost. Getting it right the first time will avoid either a major re-work, or having to live with a system which is extremely diffi-cult (at the worst, impossible) to trouble-shoot or modify.

In this paper, we developed and implemented a fuzzy logic expert system capable of evaluating the degree of sustainability within the context of gold mining operations. The newly introduced approach of evaluating sustainability in the gold mining industry has the merit of sufficiently handling diverse, sustainable, development-related qualitative and quantitative data owing to fuzzy logic technology capabilities in dealing with linguistic syntax. The economic, environmental and social indicator inputs were independently evaluated and then combined with the aid of fuzzy logic to provide an overall sustainability index on a scale of zero to one. A total of 66 independent indicators were identified and applied in our model. The novelty of this work lies in providing a coherent numerical and automated approach in evaluating sustainability in the context of gold mining operations. In addition, the model can aid policy- and decision-makers in arriving at consistent decisions regarding the degree of sustainability on various aspects of gold mining operations. The functionality of this model will be illustrated through several examples.

NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. A study of the bacterial oxidation of naturally occurring high-purity sulphide minerals (FeS2, Fel_xS, CuFeS2, Cu2S) has been conducted using a mesophilic strain of T. 6ejtAooLcdcth4. As well as metal analyses and solution pH, partitioning of sulphide sulphur into elemental sulphur and sulphate ion has been monitored. Partially oxidised sulphide substrates have been characterised at regular time intervals by X-ray diffraction methods and extra-cellular organic compounds reporting into leach solution have been identified by'thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that the S¦/SO4 2 partitioning of the sulphide substrates is independent of cell inoculum size and initial pulp density and varies with solution pH, Eh, leaching time and mineralogical properties of the individual sulphide minerals. The signifi- cance of results for applications in selective flotation, coal desulphurisation and agglomera- tion has been outlined.

The inferred ground conditions for the proposed mined cross passages at the northern end of the Waterview Connection tunnels consist of an overburden of alluvial and residual soils, with mixed face geology of highly weathered to unweathered extremely weak rock. This paper describes three-dimensional (3D) finite difference analyses undertaken to evaluate the stability of the cross passage headings and to validate the proposed sequence of excavation. The analyses undertaken incorporated the influence of the construction of the mainline tunnels and the breakout opening in the segmental lining for construction of cross passages.The stability analyses were carried out using FLAC3D™, version 4.0 (by Itasca Consulting Group) by progressive reduction of shear strength parameters to obtain a failure condition and estimate a factor of safety. For each step of strength reduction, corresponding increments of displacements of several points on heading faces were monitored. The stability obtained from numerical analyses was compared with analytical solutions. Interpretation of results of drained analyses indicated instability of the upper 2 m of heading face within the highly weathered rock mass. Additional analyses were undertaken by including grouted fibreglass dowels to reinforce the heading face. The results of the additional analyses showed significant reduction in displacements and yielding of ground around the face. The proposed temporary support comprised face reinforcement using grouted fibreglass dowels in conjunction with canopy tubes and perimeter support of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The stability of the construction sequence, which was related to the specific requirement of the proposed excavation equipment, was validated.CITATION:Wansbone, M G and Bhargava, R, 2014. A new experimental procedure for determining the solids flux curve is detailed. The procedure is based on measuring the concentration at various heights of a bed of settled solids formed during a semi-continuous sedimentation test. Unlike conventional thickener area calculations, the test procedure demonstrates the dependence of the flux curve on the system feed flux. At a given feed flux, there was good agreement between the solids flux curve determined by the method and continuous sedimentation results. The widely used method of Kynch was found to be restricted to relatively high effective feed fluxes and consequently there was poor agreement with continuous tests at low feed fluxes. The flux curve determined by the method of Coe and Clevenger was invalid for all feed fluxes. A case study shows how the required thickener area would vary for a number of fine coal processing options.

Poor quality water resulting from interaction of surface run-off with saline mine spoil and soils can cause significant problems for water reuse on mine sites. Not only can this saline water lead to machine corrosion and increased maintenance costs, but may cause detrimental effects on the environment. Determining the geochemistry of mine spoil, and the likelihood of salt dissolution during rainfall events, may aid in more effective mine site management of water. Spoil samples were taken from three areas of the German Creek mine site, situated in the Bowen Basin coalfield, Queensland. Samples from two undisturbed areas on the lease were also collected for comparison. Analyses were performed using a variety of laboratory techniques: leaching tests, effective cation exchange capacity determination, X-ray diffraction, clay quantification, and total organic content determination. Results show that dissolution of surface (top 2 cm) salt minerals from spoil areas is an important contributor to surface run-off salinity during rainfall events. Equally, ion exchange with clay minerals appears to be a significant source of elevated ion concentrations in run-off waters. Findings from the undisturbed areas show undetectable quantities of salt mineral species, resulting in waters with low ion concentrations. More generally, monovalent cations (sodium, and to a lesser extent potassium) appear to be derived from dissolution of salt precipitated whereas divalent cations (calcium, magnesium) are more likely to be sourced from exchange reactions with clay minerals. Incorporating knowledge about the mechanism of cation mobilisation from spoil with the spatial distribution of spoil properties and understanding of the dynamics of water quality variations on the site will aid in development of integrated water quantity and quality management strategies.

The factors influencing mobile equipment fleet cost and performance commence at the time of mine planning and continue to exert an influence over the life of the mine. These factors must be understood at the early stages of any operationÆs planning process as they continue to impact both positively and negatively on fleet performance and operating cost throughout the life of the mine. The key factors examined in this paper include: grades; rolling resistance; fragmentation and truck loading.

In south-eastern King Island, sediments and lavas of possible Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian age have been intruded by Lower Carboniferous granitic rocks.Within the contact aureole of the Bold Head adamellite north of Grassy the sediments and lavas have been metamorphosed to hornblende hornfels facies grade. The thermal gradient within the contact aureole was small, as the hornfelses exhibit no mineral zoning over a distance of 700 ft from the adamellite.Skarns occur both within the adamellite near its contact with the country rocks, and within the country rocks as partial replacements of three dolomitic limestone horizons. The latter type, the exoskarns, commonly have an andradite-salite mineralogy and carry economic concentrations of scheelite. These resulted from the replacement of carbonate beds due to both diffusion and infiltration metasomatism. Silica, tungsten, minor sulphides, and water were introduced from the adamellite, while aluminium and iron diffused from the enclosing pelitic sediments. Calcium released during marble replacement countered the loss of iron and aluminium in the pelitic hornfelses transforming them to diopside-rich rocks.Endoskarns within the adamellite are the result of two way diffusion across the contact; calcium, aluminium, and iron diffused from sediment to adamellite as silica, potassium, sodium, and water diffused from adamellite to the sediments. From estimates of the lithostatic pressure and mole fraction of CO2, the mineral assemblages of the hornfelses imply that the temperature of metamorphism lay between 530° and 710°C. This temperature range is in good agreement with minimum temperatures, between 610° and 710°C, for the recrystallization of the marbles of the contact aureole, calculated from the determinations of the solid solution of the magnesite molecule in calcite.

Last evening, in Auckland, I heard the Chairman of Heinz US, Dr Tony O'Reilly (who, in addition to Heinz's ownership of our largest food processor, also has substantial personal investments in this country), advocate New Zealand as a 'regional corporate capital'.   Why would someone like Dr O'Reilly hold that view? No doubt, as one of Ireland's great rugby players of the 50s and 60s, he admires at least one thing that we do very well (confirmed again in Dublin over the past weekend). But that's not sufficient to support such a view.   He cited many reasons for preferring New Zealand over, say, Sydney, Australia, calling this 'the most rational in which to locate [an] international headquarters', including û +         we have no capital gains tax; +         a more 'pro-business environment'; +         a 'first class' legal and banking system; and +         a 'simple political system'.   I can find no better 'text for today's address.

Economic recovery of gold from complex gold ores, including poly-metallic deposits, is impacted by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals. These base metals can create both a metallurgical challenge plus waste handling and disposal challenges. Base metals such as Cu and Zn compete for the cyanide reagent and often increase the total cyanide consumption to the point of making precious metals recovery uneconomic. In addition, the accumulation of base metals in cyanide solutions represent a challenge for cyanide detoxification and waste water treatment as these metals report to waste sludge. Such sludge requires safe handling and disposal, with possible long-term liabilities.Base metal interference can be removed with sulfidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening (SART) process technology. SART liberates the base metal from the cyanide complex and precipitates the metal as an insoluble sulfide product that can be recovered as a commercial grade concentrate. With the base metal precipitated, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide and recycled to the gold extraction circuit.BioteQ completed laboratory testing for two projects, one employing cyanide leaching of copper-gold sulfide flotation concentrate and one employing a Merrill Crowe process, to determine the effectiveness of SART to remove and recover Cu and Zn in high-grade sulfide concentrates and to reduce the impact of cyanide-soluble metals on gold recovery and cyanide consumption. A synergistic solvent extraction (SX) system for nickel and cobalt recovery using Versatic 10 and decyl-4-pyridinecarboxylate was tested with BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution. Another synergistic SX system for cobalt and zinc recovery was successfully tested using Baja MiningÆs pilot plant leach solutions. Synergistic SX systems have also been developed to separate iron, zinc and copper from nickel and cobalt for Minara Resources and to separate manganese from magnesium and calcium in waste stream for HiTec Energy. The gypsum precipitation problem at the former Bulong operation could have been alleviated using a Versatic 10 and CLX50 synergistic SX system. These synergistic systems have shown high selectivity for target metals over impurity metals and would largely improve SX plant operation. Maintaining a æhealthyÆ organic is very important for efficient plant operation. Careful analysis of plant organic at CSIRO has been used as a tool to pre-empt and/or solve problems in operating circuits. Work performed to assist operators has included assessing plant organic solutions to highlight impurity build-up with time, assessing reagent stability under prescribed operating conditions, correlating organic composition with impurity transfer and crud analysis. An independent estimate has determined that work in this area by CSIRO has provided over $50 M in benefits to the industry.

Recent whole-rock geochemical data from nearly 900 fresh drill core and underground samples taken from seven central Victorian gold deposits confirm the presence of distinct and identifiable primary alteration haloes surrounding the deposits. Ferroan carbonate alteration extends for up to several hundred metres away from turbidite-hosted gold mineralisation outside of contact metamorphic aureoles. A less distinct phyllic alteration zone can be identified using geochemical molar ratios or short wave infrared analysis. It generally overlaps a sulfidic halo characterised by disseminated pyrite and in close proximity to mineralised structures, arsenopyrite. The extent of the sulfidic halo can be traced using low-level analysis of pathfinder elements such as S, Au, As and Sb. Recognition of these alteration features enlarges the target for exploration and provides a tool by which drilling can be directed towards mineralised structures.
