With the depletion of the mineral reserves that can be mined by surface mining, demand for highly productive and safe underground mines will increase. Underground drill and blast techniques continue to be refined but true æmass productionÆ is difficult to achieve. As is evidenced by the longwall mining of coal, alternative mining methods based on mechanised mining can meet the expectations but the issues of how to effectively cut strong rocks, how to define the orebody and how the mechanised miners can be automated and maintained all need to be addressed. CMTE is working in all of these areas. We believe that the oscillating disc cutter may provide the long sought-after breakthrough in mechanised rock cutting. Disc cutters are one of the most robust designs of cutting tool and the cutters attack the rock in a manner which effects direct tensile breakage. The internal cutter drive and the inertial damping mean that the already low cutter forces are not all transmitted back to the machine, making it possible to design lightweight, flexible mining systems. For orebody delineation drill monitoring, drillhole logging and geophysical imaging are key procedures being developed at CMTE. To automate mining machines, work is progressing well in the development of systems for autonomous vehicle navigation and mining robotics. A strategic contribution to maintenance issues is being made through the development of procedures for automatic analysis of used oils, monitoring the strength of mechanical structures, and operating point optimisation.

Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

The devastating failure of Dam I at the Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine near Brumadinho in Brazil on 25th January 2019 left at least 270 people dead or missing. In the immediate aftermath of this event, many mining companies commenced reviews of their tailings and water storage facilities (T&WSFs), and Rio Tinto was no exception. Rio Tinto has an interest in over 250 T&WSFs across 47 sites in 13 countries as owner-operator, as managing JV partner, and through non-managed partnerships and other ownership arrangements; T&WSF experts from Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence visited the sites in order to complete Technical Risk Reviews of each facility. These reviews looked beyond the day-to-day operational aspects of T&WSF management, and the site’s compliance with local regulations and Rio Tinto’s internal D5 Standard – Management of tailings and water storage facilities, in order to provide a strategic, second line of assurance perspective. The reviews focused on design and construction; operational controls; risk control framework; and competencies and capabilities of personnel involved in the design, operation and closure of the facilities. Additional activities were carried out in parallel with these reviews, including the development of a consistent approach to dam break studies; the public disclosure of information on Rio Tinto’s tailings storage facilities and their management; and contribution to external programs such as the initiatives being co-ordinated by the International Committee on Mining and Metals. This paper provides an overview of the tailings and water storage assurance work undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence Tailings Validation Taskforce to date; work that will continue to improve governance and assurance for all of Rio Tinto’s T&WSF.

Mining is a global industry. The conference is a good example of this, as itÆs jointly organised by professional associations from Canada, Australia and South Africa, and has attracted speakers and delegates from around the world. I commend the organisers for their initiative. I am pleased to be asked to participate in this panel û although I would hasten to add I see myself as perhaps an informed observer rather than an expert. It wonÆt be news to most in this room that AustraliaÆs mining sector is booming. As one of the most productive and diversified mineral regions in the world, this activity is also something that has not escaped the attention of CanadaÆs largest mining companies! This means that I follow what is happening in the industry and more specifically what might be occurring here. Two-way investment between Canada and Australia stood at $9.8 billion in 2005 with Canada as the seventh largest overall investor in Australia with $8.22 billion in investments. The majority of this investment is by Canadian minerals and metals companies. In recognition of the importance of Canadian investment in this sector in Australia, I maintain close contact with our companies. By way of example, in the past two months I spent a week in Western Australia visiting Perth and meeting with companies for example, like Teck Cominco and LionOre as well as seeing various Barrick Gold operations in Kalgoorlie. I attended the opening of AlcanÆs new Asia Pacific Headquarters in Brisbane in August and just two weeks ago was in Cowal, NSW for the opening of BarrickÆs new mine there. Having met with BHP Billiton in Vancouver, IÆm equally aware of active Australian mining interests in Canada. This is not designed to indicate how active I am but rather to demonstrate the dynamism in the mining industry and the diversity of Canadian mining interests in this country and Australian interests in Canada.

Mobile mining equipment presents only a small portion (ten per cent mining project costs but the selected technology will determine to a large extent the mining performance and mine profitability. The actual performance of the selected mobile equipment technology will rely on the support functions, infrastructure, user interface and user acceptance. Optimising the technology to match the circumstances is an increasingly important phase in a mine feasibility study. Smartly done feasibility studies include the possible future needs of changing or building-up of the selected technology. In massive mining applications the machinery faces quite different challenges than in selective or small-scale mining applications. In massive mining applications the efficient and continuous move of large amounts of material has led to the use of increasing degree of automation. This higher degree of automation in a mining application, on the other hand, will be best applied to a smooth and streamlined mining process and operation. Mining methods like block caving support automated operation. Automated mobile equipment needs supportive infrastructure, monitoring and information transfer systems as well as well established working procedures. Too often the user interface and human factor is disregarded during the consideration of automation. Through the available supplier programming tools it is possible to see how much the selected technology provides flexibility in changing production or economical situations, when major rebuilds or replacements are necessary, and view the effects of all these on the mine economy. When adequate technology is available from various sources, the difference becomes from preparing for the future, managing costs and combining the best layout with the most suitable technological solutions.

Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

The operation of copper flotation circuit is a challenging task for the site metallurgists and plant operators. To optimise the performance requires meeting both grade and recovery objectives. These plants have numerous pieces of equipment that are monitored by hundreds of sensors. The challenge is to review these sensors and adjust the numerous control inputs to maintain peak operational efficiency for extended periods. There is also a need to respond to equipment failure. These challenges lead to in operational inefficiencies and can result in a reduction in revenue.This paper details an overview of an operational assistance tool implemented at Newcrest's Telfer plant’s copper flotation circuit. This tool is based on a digital twin of the plant. A digital twin is a model of the plant that is simulated in parallel to the normal plant operation. It is fed with the plant data in real time to provide a prediction of plant operation. The model outputs directly generate the metrics that are used to assess the plant performance, and these are compared with the metrics calculated from the actual plant’s operation. Deviations between the model estimate and the plant’s actual performance are used to gather insight into plant health and alert the operator to poor performance. The operators gather more information regarding the root cause by reviewing the model’s inputs that have deviated outside their normal operating range. An evaluation of the plant performance, following the commissioning of the digital twin, showed an overall reduction of acid soluble copper in the tails.This paper discusses the implementation of a digital twin of the plant to monitor plant performance during live operation. It will include details on data collection and cleansing, data reduction techniques, model development, and real-time implementation. The results of the case study of an implementation of a digital twin at Newcrest's Telfer copper flotation plant will be used throughout the paper.CITATION:Oliver, S J and Tooher, R, 2018. "The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Subsequently it is anticipated that a more consistent, homogenous underflow can be produced for downstream filtration.Citation:Thompson, M, 2016. On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

Geomembranes selected for various applications often start with considering target properties developed by industry organisations such as Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI), and test methods developed by ASTM and other Standards organisations The geomembrane types are typically, initially selected based on manufacturers recommendations and chemical resistance data from the manufacturer or industry knowledge. Geomembranes considered for this project included materials with material properties that exceeded the minimum target values of various test methods. The difficulty is in selecting which parameters are most important for a particular application and also what service life can be expected for the geomembrane under various chemical and environmental exposure conditions. Accelerated aging testing of candidate geomembranes in simulated exposure conditions can be useful to select the preferred geomembrane and predict the service life of the geomembrane under different exposure conditions. The exposure conditions of immersion in acidic tailings liquor, splash zone and freeboard zone were considered for evaporation ponds on a site with significant heat and UV radiation. Candidate geomembranes considered a range of different types of polyethylene liners. The results of the accelerated aging testing have allowed the selection of the geomembrane for the range of exposure conditions and evaluation of the expected service life of the geomembrane.

Deep hard rock underground mines tend to experience high stress as such drives exhibit dynamic responses attributed to a rock burst variant (strainburst). This dynamic behaviour is difficult to predict, and every effort is made to devise the appropriate dynamic support system for its associated failure restraint. This paper outlines the back analysis and the support scheme design for an underground decline that exhibited damage from a dynamic strainburst occurrence. It employs a decline section that experienced a dynamically loaded strainburst that initiated rock fragment ejections. The procedure involves a preliminary structural analysis, a seismic intensity measure, and a rock mass simulation to determine the static stress concentration and ground support system response. The numerical simulation is conducted in FLAC3D which employs the advanced strain-softening IMASS constitutive model governed by two Hoek–Brown (HB) bounding yield surfaces. To account for the post-peak brittleness response associated with strainburst the plastic strain multiplier () is adjusted to 0.0 < < 1.0. The back-analysis shows that the occurrence was initiated by a low-intensity seismic wave that superimposed an extra stress component to the initial static stress which triggered rock fragment ejections. Additionally, the appropriate support scheme comprised of Weldmesh, Fibrecrete, static (split set) and yieldable (Kinloc) reinforcements is recommended and implemented. Thereafter, the bolt’s efficiency is evaluated based on the axial force and elongation capacities and then compared with the published bolt performance data. The evaluation results show that the maximum bolt axial force (0.1 per cent) and elongation (0.006 per cent) are below the designed capacity and rupture strain.

Contemporary approaches to safety management appear to be failing short of meeting its mark in improving mine safety. This is evidenced by the high workers compensation, high incidence rates and fatalities. Evidence from high-risk and complex organisations points towards safety culture as being important in improving site safety. In more recent years resilience engineering has been touted as a new and innovative way of managing safety. This paper reviews and synthesises previous literature on safety culture and resilience engineering. It then highlights methods that can be used to measure safety culture and resilience engineering, and explores similarities and differences between complex organisations and gold mining to identify opportunities for more innovative approaches to improving safety in gold mining operations through safety culture and resilience engineering.

Sampling errors result from heterogeneities within the lot under study. Within a rock mass in situ heterogeneity results in the geological nugget effect, which accounts for most of the natural variability. In broken rock, constitution and distribution heterogeneities are important. A major result of the constitution heterogeneity is the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) which is the smallest residual error that can be achieved. It cannot be eliminated, but can be minimised and refl ects the fact that the broken rock sampling process is never completely free of error. Together with other sampling errors, FSE contributes to the total nugget effect. The FSE for a sampling protocol can be evaluated using the so-called Gy equation. Its practical applications to low-grade gold ores have often been unsuccessful due to problems linking the FSE and minimum sampling mass and the defi nition of key parameters such as the liberation diameter. Well-designed sample protocols minimise the total sampling error and hence the nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for all sampling programs whether related to exploration and resource evaluation, metallurgical test sampling, grade control or metallurgical plant sampling. This contribution reviews the relationship between heterogeneity, FSE and nugget effect in gold deposits; and emphasises the need for FSE management throughout the mine value chain.

The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.

Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks&apos; principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders&apos; risk / return position is outlined.

To solve the mining safety and health needs of the future, access to, and sharing of, timely and relevant information will be crucial. The next generation of the Web will provide tools (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc) to define and link content for more effective discovery, integration, and reuse across applications and organisations. A recent Gartner Research Report (Finding and exploiting value in Semantic Web technologies on the web, May 2007) predicts these technologies will begin to coalesce in ten years. Implementing this Semantic Web requires structured web content described via metadata (information about information). If an industry or enterprise bases its metadata on a common vocabulary, it becomes possible to share and reuse information. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and HealthÆs (NIOSH) Mining web site provides access to more than 1500 NIOSH-developed publications, products, and topic pages on issues as diverse as ground control, respiratory diseases, and mine emergency management. As the site has grown, locating content has become increasingly difficult. To improve the searching process, a panel of internal experts representing all major research programs was established to develop a controlled vocabulary for indexing that content. The outcome is the NIOSH Mining Safety and Health Thesaurus, a faceted, hierarchical thesaurus containing hundreds of mining safety and health terms organised into 20 facets (eg diseases, injuries and disorders; hazardous events and exposures, equipment, engineering and administrative controls). One immediate goal of this project is to reduce the complexity of locating information on the NIOSH Mining web site by implementing metadata and faceted information retrieval techniques. Another goal is to stimulate discussion in the international mining community regarding developing metadata standards so the industry is ready to adopt future Semantic Web technologies to improve access to mining safety and health information.

The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.

The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel.
