Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. There is still a huge challenge in efficiently recovering the arsenides minerals that are largely concentrated in the Platreef Bushveld Complex which constitutes about 21 per cent of the platinum group minerals (PGMs). Therefore new collectors are required to improve the recovery separation of hard to float minerals, in particular sperrylite. The triazine modifications are promising reagents for mineral flotation and have not been given much attention in minerals processing. The adsorption of sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT), sodium 2,6- ditrithiocarbonate-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTTCBAT) and sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) on sperrylite (100) surface were performed to identify a well performing collector molecule. We observed that the triazine collectors preferred to bridge on surface As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SDTTCBAT > SDTBAT > SNBX, indicating that the SDTTCBAT had strong exothermic adsorption on sperrylite and pyrite. These results showed that the ditrithiocarbamate had a great influence in the adsorption strength on the sperrylite surface. Importantly it was found that the triazine collector had stronger adsorption than the xanthate, which portrayed a promising replacement of xanthate collector. These results paved a way for design of novel collector for sperrylite and other chalcogenide minerals to improve their recovery.

A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. Two steps are required: identification of gaps in performance and priority matters of interest to financial institutions and development of action plans to ensure that the priority requirements are met or capable of being met.A PE firm can set its project for success by understanding the social and environmental performance requirements of international standard financiers and by setting the project on the right path to meeting these requirements, and thus making it an attractive investment.CITATION:Allen, P, Stoker, P and Keogh, A, 2015. The disagregation and privatisation of the mining and power gene ration operations of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria has being taking place over the past five years. This has transformed the service provision to the new organisations and has resulted in major change to the working lives and professional relationships of thousands of Australians. The authors wish to take this opportunity to explore the issues arising as the program of privatisation of public assets continues. Changes within the workplace which resulted from the outsourcing of the 'investigation and design' functions and more lately as a result of privatisation of the operating, generating and distribution businesses are discussed. The responsibility of managers retaining the services of design engineers has changed. There is an added responsibility of contract administration and an increased focus on intellectual property and strategic issues. The way in which the sectors are adapting is discussed and future directions are explored. We welcome this opportunity to explore the changes in professional life which have taken place over the last five years in the Latrobe Valley Power industry. Engineers and earth scientists have a pivotal role in the continuing successful operation of the three Latrobe Valley Mines of the generation companies. The Mines' collectively excavate annually over 13 million cubic metres of overburden and 48 million tonnes of coal for delivery to mine-mouth power stations and for briquette manufacture.

Steel wire weld mesh is a common industry standard surface support used in underground mining, traditionally installed with mining drills during the bolting cycle. As underground mining depth and stress increase, mining methods and their sequences at these depths place challenges on conventional surface support options. These challenges have provided a need for high capacity surface support options that improve development efficiency, reduce the need for secondary ground support installation and is easily installed with current mining equipment. A 5m2 mesh testing machine was built, suspending a 9500kg concrete slab, designed with multiple hold down points to test varying bolting patterns. Mesh load and displacement is accurately measured using a data acquisition system which pushes against the restrained mesh module with an available 200kN load and 1200mm displacement capacity. A testing program comparing conventional surface support, straps and combinations of both were tested for baseline results. New module designs incorporating existing mesh types and new design concepts were manufactured to allow for single pass installation during a bolting cycle. Nine mesh types, mesh/strap combinations and new mesh module designs were compared using the same test method. Based on these results, two high capacity mesh module types are produced. This paper will detail the test program, load and displacement results and underground mesh module performance, describing the two high capacity mesh modules function within the development cycle and manual handling. In 2013, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) produced 251 Mt from 15 mines in Western Australia. Throughout the mines, Ore Reserve models are used for long-term and medium-term mine planning. Grade control data aids the accuracy of short-term planning. Reconciliation of models with grade control data is important for maintaining confidence in predictions from the models, understanding the limitations of the models, and identifying issues that may require further work.There are a large number of sites and models, with more than 200 professionals involved in different parts of the reconciliation process. Regular meetings of all involved and enabling effective communication are important in the reconciliation process.Reconciliation data is gathered and processed through a web-based system; Grade Block Reconciliation System. This system cuts each grade block against the required model, stores the results, and allows users to view and analyse the data. Development of this system has occurred over a number of years and all Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine geologists and resource geologists now use it as standard to report reconciliation results. The results can be viewed in many ways including by different time periods or benches. Graphing the results assists identification of trends. Centralising and standardising reconciliation has allowed easier comparison between sites. Flexibility in the system allows users to customise reports to manage issues unique to their particular site.In parallel with system development, substantial effort has been put into ensuring mining professionals get together to discuss and understand reconciliation issues. To facilitate this there are now regular sessions, including site visits. Issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis and decisions on how best to address the issues are made by the relevant stakeholders. Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. The borehole televiewer is a downhole geophysical logging device that produces continuous, oriented, 360¦ images of the drill hole wall. Two types of borehole images are currently being generated at the BHP Billiton Mount Whaleback deposit. The optical televiewer (OTV) tool captures a ærealÆ image of the borehole wall whereas an acoustic televiewer (ATV) generates an image through variations in physical borehole size, scattering the energy from an acoustic beam. Orientation of the resulting ævirtual coreÆ is derived through magnetometers and accelerometers, providing values within one degree for both inclination and azimuth. Downhole structures such as fractures, joints, foliations and bedding planes are selected directly off the borehole image, recorded and displayed in a 3D modelling package along side adjacent drill holes. Measurements are corrected from apparent to true dip and magnetic to true north. Strata-bound magnetic anomalies are identified and corresponding measurements excluded. The importance of borehole imaging increases substantially with its ability to integrate the OTV and/or ATV data with other forms of lithological and structural data. At Mount Whaleback, the borehole televiewer has been implemented to provide information for geotechnical exploration including structural analysis, lithological characterisation and rock-mass conditions. Within the large area in and around Mount Whaleback, drilling may intersect a number of different geological formations with various rock types and conditions. With the application of the borehole televiewer, reverse circulation drilling can provide information traditionally obtained by diamond drilling.

The first grant of land rights in Australia was pursuant to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. That Act has been at the core of the dispute between land rights and miners' rights. The mining industry believes that the Act, in giving a right of veto to Aborigines with respect to exploration and mining on Aboriginal land, has been responsible for a stagnation in exploration amd mining activity in the Northern Territory. In February 1985 the Commonwealth Government released for public comment its preferred model for national land rights legislation. The model has been opposed by the mining industry because it believes, first, that land rights is a matter which should be left to the States and, secondly, that the detailed mechanisms contained in the model constrain the industry in the manner of the Northern Territory legislation. Aboriginal leaders have opposed the model because it does not, in their view, measure up to undertakings given by the Commonwealth Government and, in addition, it provides for amendments to the Northern Territory legislation which are likely to result in the loss of the Aboriginal veto right. Are land rights and miner's rights compatible? The answer is yes provided all parties, including Governments, are prepared to talk and compromise and Governments recognise that the grant of land rights and any control by the Aboriginal people of exploration and mining on their land is not a substitute for raising the living standards of Aborigines as a significant group of disadvantaged Australians.

A simulation program has been developed tc predict the airflow distribution and thermal environment in multi-level narrow lode Cornish =n mines. Because of the approximate equality between fan power and natural ventilation _rergy a true thermodynamic mesh balance using mass flow rather than volume flow rate was required. Compressibility is allowed for by calculating mesh corrections on a mass flow of dry air basis. In this context, and within the confines of any steady state model, both the steady flow energy and pressure equations are satisfied with equal validity. The mesh balance includes natural ventilation energy, frictional losses, moisture lift work, water droplet energy and fan energy.

Metal production have long been using carbon sources as both reducing agents and energy sources. Consequently, the global extractive metal sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 9.5 per cent. Hydrogen gas offers as a promising ecofriendly alternative to carbon in metallurgical processes, serving as both a reductant and energy supplier with a by-product being only water vapour. However, the implementation of molecular hydrogen faces certain challenges related to the thermodynamics and kinetics of metal oxide reduction. In addressing these challenges, researchers have explored the application of hydrogen plasma, generated by subjecting molecular hydrogen to high energy to produce atomic, ionic and excited hydrogen species. Hydrogen plasma offers thermodynamic and kinetic advantages over molecular hydrogen and carbon-based reductants, exhibiting lower standard Gibbs free energy of reaction and activation energy. Therefore, hydrogen plasma can produce metal in fewer steps, process any oxide feed and feed size and even be used to refine metals. Despite these advantages, challenges exist in utilising hydrogen plasma in extractive metallurgy, including electricity costs, potential reverse reactions and industrial-scale implementation. This study provides a mini review of prior research on hydrogen plasma for metal oxides reduction, particularly iron oxide, as well as state-of-the-art techniques for its use in extractive metallurgy applications by mentioning several reactor types. Future prospects and scale-up possibilities of the hydrogen plasma in extractive metallurgy will also be presented.

The successful `marriage' between a company seeking to raise funds to develop a project and their financiers calls for a strong mutual understanding of each other's needs. For a company attempting to raise funding, the alternative methods are ever expanding. The optimum method will vary depending on the financial position, risk/reward outlook of the company and the strength of the project for which development capital is being sought. It is likely that small mining companies will need to raise equity funds for advancing projects to the development stage. At that time, they will probably still require a reasonable level of shareholder equity to meet the requirements of banks and other parties to cover potential cost over-runs on the project and feasibility costs. Larger companies, however, are likely to find it much easier and cheaper to raise debt from banks. When evaluating companies and projects for funding, banks will pay particular attention to the quality and experience of management in developing similar projects and it may be necessary for some companies to retain the services of outside consultants. Before a project needs funding, companies should meet with potential financiers to develop relationships to select and ensure a smooth transaction to funding in the future.

Blasting is an essentially violent process aimed to disrupt and loosen rock for productive excavation and downstream processing. Dilution of the orebody to some extent is the inevitable result, particularly in narrow vein gold mines. A small change in gold recovery is usually a strong lever on revenue generation. As a result blast designs are carefully engineered to both minimise and control the direction of rock movement. Traditionally blast designs in gold mines have used the minimum powder factor that will still permit rock excavation. This now conflicts with the recent industry trend to optimise the total process flowsheet from the mine to the mill. Numerous mines have achieved success in reducing total mining cost by increasing powder factors. Not only is explosive energy cheaper than mechanical comminution energy requirements, the increased blasting effect may deliver benefits across all downstream processes of digging, hauling, crushing and milling. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operation is the largest gold mine in Australia, located in the heart of the Kalgoorlie Goldfields. Blast dilution has been reduced at KCGM by managing location of blast boundaries and by firing along strike to choked faces. Significant economies of scale have resulted from application of a bulk mining methods. The bench height of 10 m is the largest in the Western Australian Goldfields, and is typically mined in a single pass with large face shovels. Recent increases in production rates in both the mine and mill has been partly attributed to a 30 per cent increase in powder factor. KCGM then examined the benefit of a further 18 per cent increase in powder factor to 1.0 kg/BCM. A concern though was the impact of very high powder factors resulting in excessive blast movement and subsequently ore dilution. This was the subject of a project conducted with Orica Explosives. OricaÆsDMC(Distinct Motion Code) blast model was applied to understand the effect of not just further increases in powder factor but also blast geometry and explosive type. The modeling work demonstrated that high powder factors may be applied with minimal increase in ore dilution provided the combination of blast geometry and explosive type is optimised. These results are currently being implemented to achieve further reductions in total mining costs without a significant impact on recovery.

This paper reports on the implementation of the critical control concept to manage material risks in the mining and metals industries. The critical control management (CCM) approach assumes it is better to identify weaknesses in risk controls before an incident happens as opposed to discovering weaknesses from an investigation after an incident occurs. The first is sometimes referred to as active monitoring and the second as reactive monitoring (Health and Safety Executive and Chemical Industries Association, 2006). Both are needed. However, whilst methods for both active and reactive monitoring of risk controls are well established in many high hazard industries, such as oil and gas, petroleum and chemical industries, until the publication in 2015 of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) guides, (Good Practice Guide and the subsequent Implementation Guide) (ICMM, 2015), there was no specific mining and metals industry guidance on critical control management. This paper reports on progress in implementing the ICMM guidance drawing on two main sources. First, a benchmarking survey of a representative sample of coal and metalliferous mines, both underground and open cut/pit), sponsored jointly by the Queensland Resources Council and the Queensland Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health in the context of a recommendation that the Queensland mining industry adopts high reliability organisation (HRO) principals (Queensland Resources Council and Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health, 2022). Second, it draws on Noetic’s experience of implementing critical control management in mining and other high hazard industries in Australia, Africa, China and North America (Wilkinson, 2018). The paper describes good practices found and where significant improvements can be made, providing specific and actionable examples of both. From this it also identifies how future guidance on this topic could be improved.
