Completeness of extraction of a mineral from ore depends on many reasons. First of all it is a function of quality of disintegration of ore. It is supposed that two basic factors: character of structure and texture of the ore aggregate and a disintegration technique influence the quality of the mineral aggregate destruction, æopeningÆ of its internal boundaries. In this paper, the problem of technological mineralogy from the point of view of genesis of the mineral aggregate, its typomorphical features and methods of their quantitative description are discussed. The purpose of this research is to provide information for technologists. It should enable the development of a rational flexible scheme of disintegration of ore with full extraction of a useful component, without its losses and without unnecessary expenses of energy. For achievement of this purpose the mineralogical information should have ½number and a measure+. By the authors, the technique of the quantitative analysis of fabric of the mineral aggregate based on several models û thermodynamic, crystallographic and geometrical is offered and discussed. The leading role in the quantitative analysis of a fabric of ore belongs to internal bounders. But internal bounders of the mineral aggregate by bounders or faces of the mineral individuals or mineral grains are formed. Their geometry, orientation concerning own (mineral grain) crystallographic lattices, orientation and distribution in space of the ore aggregate are proportional to the energy accumulated at origin and the further growth. These characteristics of mineral individuals are consequences of conditions of their formation. That is why the named triad of models is used. From crystallography it is known that faces of different stability and mobility form borders of crystals. They also contain different quantity of energy. Mineral grains also are faceted by different energy borders. They form intergrowths with each other according to a principle of balance or unbalance. That is why in addition to traditional parameters of the description of a fabric of the mineral aggregate (mode and grainmetrical composition) it is necessary to add new. For example, length and the square of intergrowthing bounders of mineral individuals differentiated (in couples), crystallographic symbols of borders, their roughness and so forth. Consequently, solving a problem of the geometrical characteristic of borders, we define also its power characteristic. In this paper experience of application of our technology in studying ores of one of deposits of Urals Mountains is presented. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices, which are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode, are possessed. Structure and texture of rock or ore aggregate reflect its formation and transformation conditions. It is important to understand that disintegration energy cannot be more than aggregation energy, the energy of intergrowths formation. The square and orientation of mineral individuals borders vary at pressures or stresses of mineral aggregate evolution. These phenomena often cause selective increase in the square of borders at constant average grain size, ie the granulation. Granulation presents the increase in quantity of mineral individuals while their modal share remains constant. At the same time their average mineral grains size. Some mineral individuals increase in size at increased pressure. When lithostatic or lateral pressure drops the majority of mineral grains increases in volume at the cost of intersticial or film solutions or fine grains. These are only special examples of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate. They illustrate our statement that all changes in fabric of the mineral aggregate are a reaction on varying external (ie geological) conditions. It is possible to consider that structurisation of totality of mineral individuals as a whole is a process of adaptation of the mineral aggregate, which forms and exists in varying force and energy fields. Differential and integrated geometry of total internal boundaries of the mineral aggregate serves as adaptation mechanism of the mineral grains system. Boundaries form intergrowths of the mineral aggregate. Thus, it is possible to consider that the most informative parameters of the stereometric analysis for restoration of the ontogenesis of the mineral aggregate are the following. First of all, it is a quantitative estimation of the volumetric shape of the ore mineral in crystallographic coordinates, a total area of borders of all mineral grains in the aggregate, the specific square of their boundaries, the specific square of intergrowth boundaries of the ore mineral separately with grains of each minerals of the matrix of the mineral aggregate as well as traditional grainsmetric and modal composition. For realisation of these types of the analysis technologies of measurement, the program of calculation and the devices that are carrying out the analysis in a semi-automatic mode are possessed.

This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

Troy Resources NL acquired a 70 per cent interest in the Mina Sertpo gold project in Goißs State, Brazil, in 2001 following a successful bid for the highly competitive international tender of a tenement package put out by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The Sertpo deposit is located on cleared grazing land 380 km west of Brasilia and is 30 per cent owned by Amazonia Mineracao Ltda, a private Brazilian company. It is a small high grade open-pittable orebody with a measured and indicated resource of 108 000 tonnes at a grade of 49.7 g/t for 172 500 ounces using a 2.0 g/t cut-off. Troy undertook the project management and development of the project while Amazonia managed the exploration activities and provided other services as required. The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, scouring the world to locate an available and suitable second-hand plant, and arranging shipping to andreconstruction in Brazil.

The Wild Dog gold-silver-copper deposit represents a new ore-deposit type in Papua New Guinea. The telluride vein mineralisation is associated with a Tertiary caldera and has similarities with that from the Baguio district, Philippines, Vatakoula, Fiji, and the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado. The deposit, discovered in July 1983, has negligible stream silt and concentrate anomaly, and a float-train limited to within 300m of the prospect. The comparatively recent exposure of the vein system may explain the limited stream expression of the deposit. At least three major veins occur in the deposit; the vein system strikes north- northeasterly, dips 78¦W, and has a maximum strike length of 1350m. Veins are enveloped by a wallrock dominated by an assemblage of quartz-illite-pyrite. Four types of silicification related to multiple vein filling events have been defined on the basis of field relationships, drill-core intersections, petrology and fluid inclusion study. To December 1986 a total of 22 diamond drill holes (2304m) and 40 reverse circulation drill holes (1833m) have been completed on the deposit, defining a 750m zone of interest. The upper 30m of the deposit is oxidised. Much of the high-grade mineralisation in both the sulphide and oxide portions of the deposit is restricted to ore- shoots which strike parallel to the overall vein structure and are vertical to steeply westward dipping. They are defined geochemically by the lg/t Au cutoff and geologically by the relative increase in the vein density of auriferous grey-black sulphidic silica, the final vein filling event. Metallurgical studies and the results of close-spaced drilling have demonstrated the very good repeatibility on duplicate assays, and the extremes of grade variability of mineralisation over very short distances. The good assay agreement on duplicate samples .s indicative of fine, dispersed gold.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.

The ability of the Australian minerals industry to successfully manage the changes and challenges that face it in the 21st century depends ultimately on the quality of its human resources. Mining engineers have a vital role in this regard. The education and training that universities are currently giving to mining engineers is under challenge and needs to be reassessed in the light of industry directions for the 21st century. At one extreme is a push for a `finished product' graduate, up and running in `the flavour of the month' issues. At the other extreme are moves to reduce face-to-face university teaching hours and return to the time honoured university concept of `reading' for a degree. The lessons of Mourn make it apparent that neither approach is appropriate to the industry's future needs (Windridge, 1996). Basic knowledge gets rusty with time and new skills need to be learned. In order to conduct mining operations safely, productively and competitively, mining engineers must now accept the need to be prepared for continuing professional development as a career imperative. The concept of being professionally or statutorily qualified for life is no longer valid. This calls into question the purpose, content, structure and mode of delivery of university courses, all of which need to engender the principle and facilitate the cause of continuing professional development. This paper presents a model which aims to deliver a quality assured university education for mining engineers for the 21st century at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional level. The model extends beyond traditional university boundaries to match industry requirements to international best practice. It is based on collaborative alliances and innovative presentation modes which will provide industry access to undergraduate and postgraduate course elements presented by a broad range of national and international academic and industry authorities. It offers the prospect for preserving the best of university ideals in higher education, for developing and maintaining programs of direct relevance to industry needs and for a structured involvement in the continuing professional development of mining engineers.

Gas power was first used on the Sons of Gwalia mine in January 1911, when a twin-cylinder Crossley engine of 167 hp was installed to belt-drive a 112 kw 550-volt ac generator. This engine was connected with a No 8 Crossley up-draught suction gas producer, using mulga charcoal as fuel.A second Crossley engine, of 400 hp direct-coupled to a 550-volt ac generator, was installed in 1912, and operated by a down-draught wood producer.This was followed by a large Kynoch twin tandem four-cylinder engine, rated at 660 hp, sea level, with a rope drive to the crushing and treatment sections of the plant.These engines operated until January 1921, when the plant and power house were destroyed by fire. After the fire, both Kynoch and second Crossley engines were salvaged and reconditioned and they continued to give useful service for some years.

Recycling steel plant by-products is a critical issue for achieving both environmental and economic sustainability of integrated steel plants. A key steel plant by-product stream is dust from basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS), which can be recycled back to the BOS vessel as iron units and to aid slag formation. The major limitations for its recycling are zinc and the uncertainty in zinc speciation of the dust. This uncertainty affects the amount of dust recycled and how it interacts with the slag during processing. BOS dust in stockpiles can undergo self-sintering reactions that oxidise the iron-bearing components. As this occurs, zinc (or oxide) may combine with iron oxides to form a zinc-iron spinel solid solution phase. Knowing which zinc-bearing species are present in the BOS dust is a key aspect in understanding and developing an efficient recycling process for the dust. To overcome difficulties associated with phase identification in the BOS dust (both fresh and selfsintered), particularly the magnetite-zinc ferrite spinel solid solution using X-ray diffraction (XRD) / scanning electron microscopy (SEM) / energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), high end characterisation tools, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy, were also used. Such an approach allowed improved phase identification of key zinc- and iron-bearing phases that were not previously resolvable. The zinc in fresh BOS dust was mostly present as extremely fine separate particles of zinc oxide, attached to the iron particles. These extremely fine particles were <10 nm in size. Additionally, a small amount of zinc ferrite was also identified within the sample (most likely contained within a magnetite-zinc ferrite spinel solid solution). However, the zinc in the self-sintered BOS dust, was found to be present entirely in a magnetite-zinc ferrite spinel solid solution. While this spinel phase had been previously identified by XRD, it was not clear that it contained zinc. The Mössbauer results provided definitive evidence of zinc within the spinel phase.

In recent years, the use of steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) for segmental tunnel linings has become increasingly popular due to numerous advantages including durability, resistance to spalling, reduced cracking at corners and edges and significant cost-saving potential. One of the key parameters for measuring the performance of SFRC is the residual (post crack) flexural strength. A problem often faced in design and quality control of SFRC is the high variability of results obtained by standard beam test methods, with reported coefficients of variability (CoV) in the order of 25 per cent. The high test variability results in a relatively low permissible design strength relative to the average flexural strength of the material and commonly leads to non-conformances with respect to residual flexural strength during production testing.This paper presents the implementation of an alternative testing method using large round determinate panels (RDPs) for quality control testing of the SFRC used in the segmental lining of the City East Cable Tunnel (CECT) in Sydney. The alternative RDP test method was found to correlate well with standard beam tests and significantly reduce the variability of test results, minimising the risk of outlying residual flexural strength results, with zero non-compliant test results reported during the production period.This successful implementation of an alternative test for post-crack flexural strength with lower variability in results constitutes a relevant precedent to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach which contributes to the development of more cost-effective concrete mixes and minimises the risk for non-compliant results and the contractual disputes that commonly arise from these.CITATION:Cortes, F, Nievergelt, R and Kost, S, 2014. Western Mining Corporation has grown from a small gold exploration and mining company, funded by large established mining companies, into a large multi-commodity and multi-national mining company with shareholders who no longer have the same understanding of mining as the founders. Ore reserve calculation methods and reporting procedures have gradually changed throughout the group during this growth. These changes have been led by the newer mines, in particular the Kambalda nickel mines, where the need for more global, less conservative reserves were required to justify capital and forward sales contracts and to inform shareholders of the true worth of their company. This change in attitude to reserves has flowed back to the gold mines and has allowed a better informed management and investing public to plan for the future. Management of the calculation of reserves remains the responsibility of individual mining operations, but a corporate reporting and management structure exists through the office of the Director of Exploration and divisional chief geologists who strive to maintain standards of calculation and reporting. Specialist ore reserve geologists are starting to justify their place in the organisation, particularly at the larger operations. Reporting to the new AusIMM Standards is fully supported, although the amount of supplementary information requested will need to be considered carefully because of the large number of factors that make up even the simplest reserve.

The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

The measurement of error in assays collected as part of a mineral exploration program or mining operation, including errors introduced during sampling, sample preparation, or geochemical analysis, historically has been undertaken in a variety of ways. Different parameters have been used to describe the magnitude of relative error and each of these parameters is related to the standard measure of relative error, the coefficient of variation. Calculation of the coefficient of variation can be undertaken in a variety of ways; however, only one produces unbiased estimates of measurement error: the root mean square coefficient of variation calculated from the individual coefficients of variation. In the last 40 years, New Zealand has developed a number of liquid- dominated geothermal steam fields, for electricity generation and indus- trial process steam. New technologies were developed, and in this work, New Zealand led the world. The policy of full publication of the results, in a wide range of sciences, provided a reservoir of detailed data defin- ing the geology, size and shape, and the chemical and physical regime, of many geothermal fields and their constituent parts. The discovery of precious and base metal deposits /precipitates in geothermal drill cores and steamfield equipment, suggested a clear link- age with epithermal mineral fields in general, and with that of the Coromandel (Hauraki) Region in particular. Further work on geothermal/ epithermal relationships have implied that the techniques, developed to obtain an understanding of geothermal fields, could be applied also to epithermal mineral exploration. This work is developing fast, and is now proceeding in many coun- tries. Future work may show that the presumed relationship between geothermal and epithermal deposits may be applicable in the wider con- texts of all hydrothermal deposits, and possibly in many other minera- lised areas with volcanic "country rocks".

The control system of a mine winder or other variable speed drive has many component parts that must work together to provide the required functional performance of the machine, together with comprehensive safety features, reliability, maintainability, user-friendliness and efficiency. Modern winders use digital control technology extensively and hence software design is a major part of the overall system. It is not practical to simulate an entire mine winder in a single computer model because of the sheer mathematical complexity of the behaviour of many of the components. However, most component parts can be simulated quite easily, and related parts of the control system software can be simulated. Such simulations allow control software algorithms to be developed and tested in isolation from the real plant. Tests can be performed on the model without fear of injury to personnel or damage to the valuable plant. For example, speed regulator control algorithms and stability settings can be adjusted to and beyond the limits of stable operation, and near optimum settings can be found. This is particularly important, for example, when designing closed loop controls for emergency brake systems. Obviously, care must be taken to ensure that the computer model of the plant is realistic and takes into account as many non-linear features of the real plant as possible. Pure mathematical analysis of some systems is very difficult to perform when non-linear plant behaviour is involved. This paper shares a number of practical simulation experiences performed using commercially available software such as Matlab and Simulink to simulate various parts of the control system of a mine winder or other variable speed drive. Demonstrations of the operation of several different computer models are shown during the presentation of the paper.

The concept of the circular economy has been gaining traction both in Europe and China.In Europe the Ellen Macarthur Foundation see their mission as accelerating the transition from a linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model that is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Chinese Circular Economy initiative is effectively a sustainable consumption and production program utilising cleaner production, industrial ecology and life cycle management approaches to meet the national challenges of maintaining rapid economic growth while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and maintaining social progress. A key characteristic of both of these circular economy initiatives is to design out, reuse or minimise the generation of waste.The mining sector, by definition, is represented by linear rather than circular activities, by supplying resources to society. However, being one of the world’s largest waste generators, the sector can adopt similar logic to that of the circular economy to improve its sustainability performance. Waste is a critical issue along the whole metals value chain, from mining waste to eventual end-of-life products, such as scrap steel from construction and demolition waste or the growing problem of electronic waste.CITATION:Corder, G and Golev, A, 2016. An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 &#215; 100 400 mm long) &quot;Polyscin&quot; Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

Optimising a mining or a quarrying operation about the overall cost is quite a challenge as there never is a situation where we have exactly the same conditions regarding rock properties, explosives&apos; performance, mining equipment or evironmental restrictions. The amount of endless influencing parameters and variables make the evaluation process difficult. The enormous progress we have seen during the recent two decades in computing has however significantly increased our ability to evaluate and process the information gathered, and refine our existing prediction models. Refined models demand an increasing volume of good quality information to show reliable conformity with reality. There is a great need for co-operative work in the mining and quarrying society if we shall be able to screen all available data, systematically find the key-parameters influencing the results and to build robust scientific models. No organisations today have all the skilled people needed or can afford to hire the necessary specialists in all the overlapping branches. This paper highlights some on-going work where the Dyno Explosives Group is adding some new pieces to the giant jigsaw puzzle representing the ultimate model of the mining and quarrying operations we all of this society would like to see completed.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (&lt;1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015.
