Mineralogy is the link between ore formation and ore extraction. It is the most fundamental component of geomet programs, and the most important aspect of a life-of-project approach to mineral resource projects. Understanding orebodies is achieved by understanding the mineralogy and texture of the materials, throughout the process, because minerals hold the information required to unlock the value they contain. Geomet mineralogy programs absolutely require the appropriate expertise and at least three steps of mineral characterisation prior to using semi-automated or other methods: field examination, thorough core logging, and optical microscopy. Economic geological inputs for orebody characterisation are necessary for orebody understanding, and are exemplified by current research in the Zambian Copperbelt, where revised sequence stratigraphy and understanding of alteration, metasomatism and metamorphism can be used to predict topical issues at mine sites. Environmental inputs for sustainability characterisation are demonstrated by recent work on tailings from the Leadville, Colorado, USA area, including linking mineralogy to water quality issues. Risk assessments need to take into account the technical uncertainties around geological variability and mineral extractability, and mineralogy is the only metric that can be used to make this risk contribution.CITATION:Olson Hoal, K, Woodhead, J and Smith, K S, 2013. ABSTRACT' The high gas emissions associated with coal extraction at some-Australian collieries have provided a need to investigate the methods used to predict these gas levels and the vent- ilation requirements for gas dilution. It is generally accepted that the introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex ventilation planning problems. These problems are made much more severe when the colliery introducing longwalls is already facing high gas emissions even during the development stages. A forecast of likely gas emissions during the longwall mining process indicated possible ventilation problems in maintaining the necessary ventilation levels to satisfy the statutory gas limitations for various production rates. Although there are sound principles used in world recognised methods of gas emission prediction a new approach developed from the findings of the Barbara Experimental Mine in Poland appears most suitable for Australian conditions. Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

In classical drill and blast underground mining methods, especially narrow vein operations economic quantities of broken ore can be left behind following normal mucking operations on the stope floors. The ore left behind can have significant economic value and if not collected can be lost forever. This paper reviews techniques for cleaning this material from stopes that have been used in the past and reviews possible modern techniques that can be applied to ensure this valuable material is removed from the stopes.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

The Golden Cross mine was an open-pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998. Closure of the mine has been based on an approach agreed among stakeholders. The initial phase was the release of a closure plan which was regarded as the blueprint for the following phases and the closure works required to implement the plan. The second phase involved lodgment of consent applications and their granting for the final water management configuration. The final phase is monitoring, confirmation that the site is performing as required by the closure plan and consents and settlement of final ownership, management and surety arrangements. Industry best practice modelling techniques have been used to finalise closure design and have been shown to be good predictors of site water management and discharge performance. Site discharges are in compliance with toxicology based water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life and most discharges from the site, including those from the closed cyanide-tailings facility, can now be discharged without further active intervention or treatment.

The iron ore district of Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) is located 60 km south-west of the city of Sirjan, in the Kerman Province of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Six exploration targets have been identified and iron ore has been mined from one area with dry and wet concentrate products sold. Prior to mining commencing in 1999, the proven reserves were estimated at 265 million tonnes (Mt) in 2004 and 40 Mt of 100 Mt overburden has since been mined. Of the six exploration targets, the largest anomaly in the GEG district is Deposit No 3. This paper discusses economic considerations focusing on mine extraction and construction of a concentration and pelletising plant to process ore from Deposit No 3 of GEG. Planned capacity of 10 Mt product (concentrate and pellet) per year is targeted to commence in 2011, and nominal capacity by 2014. The economical evaluation and analysis is one of the most important stages in the feasibility study of mine development. Financial calculations including the provision of financial resources, operation period revenue, loss and profit statement, cash flow, net cash flow, internal rate of return and net present value have been undertaken as part of the feasibility study. The feasibility study operating plan assumes a large open pit mine containing proven reserves of approximately 250 Mt. The feasibility study assumed an economic return of $80 per tonne iron pellet. The economic study determined that Deposit No 3 of GEG can be economically developed by open pit mining followed by magnetite separation and flotation to generate iron concentrate and pellets.

In 1997, the Australian coal industry through Standards Australia committee MN-001 Coal and Coke recognised the need to produce a Standard giving some instruction on how to inspect and audit mechanical sampling systems. A Guide was developed by sampling subcommittee MN-001-04 and in 1999 the Standard was released as AS4264.5 æGuide to the Inspection of mechanical sampling systemsÆ Coal and Coke. Since that time the author has assisted with other committees in developing the Guide for other commodities such as concentrates and a generic standard for particulate materials. (AS4433.6 released 2000). The Coal and Coke guide is also currently a work item for ISO Standards. This paper is focused primarily on auditing and inspection procedures for coal mechanical sampling systems. It highlights the need for at least a three level inspection protocol where the operators manning the system maintain operational checks, the operators are regularly supervised by the company managing the system and once per year an independent auditor inspects the whole system to ensure compliance with design and standards. It does not cover short- and long-term maintenance of individual systems. With companies already certified to the ISO9000 series, this guide forms the framework to bring the operation and inspection of their mechanical sampling systems into line with these principles.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). The paper deals with the problem of managing the supplies of consumables (energy resources, lubricants, explosives, explosive supplies, tires, spare parts, etc) in mines. After the introductory remarks and comments, a general stochastic model of supply, relating in general to the dynamic programming method is presented. A selection of stochastic supply model for experiments and research by the authors of this paper is not a coincidence, based on of their long experience, showing that this type of model is the most suitable to provide support for decision-making and management of supplies of consumables in mines.In order for the problem?of?consumables?supply?management to be reviewed, in whole and objectively from the aspect of risk, experimental tests of the stochastic model in real conditions were performed at the limestone open pit mine æZelenikovecÆ near Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The scope of the experimental research enabled reliable analysis. The results obtained confirm the efficiency and reliability of the stochastic model and two separate manipulative-operational positions regarding its application, which may have an important influence on the optimisation of supplies.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. The influence of feed size and pulp density on the specific rate ofbreakage of quartz was investigated. Plots of log fraction of feedremaining within the feed size interval against grinding time allowed the application of the first order grinding model to be examined. Substantial non-linearities were observed for all feed sizes due to environmental and material factors. For feed sizes above 1.3 mm, the specific rate of quartz breakage was higher with rod milling than ball milling, but below this size the reverse was true. Material that remained in the feed size interval after the initial grinding broke more slowly in subsequent grinding than the original feed material. Grinding media and time as well as feed size influenced the effects of pulp density on grinding. More dilute pulps (eg 50 per cent solids density by weight) were favoured for higher rates of breakage in rod milling but for ball milling, the optimum pulp density appeared to be 60 to 70 per cent solids by weight.

The selection of samples for metallurgical test work is generally focused on providing geologically representative samples. One of the major problems experienced with metallurgical test work using drill hole data, is the small sample sets selected for metallurgical testing. Major process and financial decisions are being made from results obtained using snapshot samples. Snapshot samples means that samples are basically selected only by grade and spatial location with the assumption that the rest of the orebody or portion of orebody is similar and will respond metallurgically the same way – ie the assumption is that the mineralogy and lithology are basically the same as the test sample. From the test work, algorithms were usually developed and used to describe throughput and recovery using some explanatory variables including grade (mineral chemistry) and ore hardness. These algorithms were then used in the recovery models to determine tonnes produced and plant throughput. However, the metallurgical parameters are a function of many geological factors including grade, lithology, alteration, mineralogy, spatial relationships and SG. In previous years, the limited mineralogical information available was deemed enough for the metallurgist to make decisions as to how many samples are needed to evaluate the metallurgical performance of the ore during processing, and subsequently the basis for the plant design. If the orebody is consistent and not complex or refractory (thus, relative simple lithology), then only spatial and grade samples will be needed to evaluate the throughput and recovery, so limited mineralogical information may be acceptable. There is now, however, an increasing realisation that the mineralogy and geology change, as do the metallurgical characteristics of the orebody, so limited samples may not be sufficient for effective metallurgical test work.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect correct mineralogical information has on the subsequent metallurgical test work program and process selection using a case study. Factors such as type of rock, rainfall and topography are thought to influence the minerals that ultimately form in various orebodies, with the result that different orebodies often react differently during metallurgical test work programs. It is therefore important to obtain accurate mineralogical and elemental deportment data, which will also indicate where the valuable metal containing minerals are located within the orebody. The better you plan and execute your metallurgical test work program during the early phases, the more accurate the decision-making process will be during the selection phase. Improved integration between geology and metallurgy data gathering (geometallurgy) during early phases will result in more accurate predictions with regard to throughput and recovery during modelling and process. Equipment selection will be considerably simpler in later phases with early planning, with improved mine and process scheduling and subsequent net present value (NPV).

A novel open stope design approach is presented that delivered improved performance in a mining area with poor ground conditions at the Olympic Dam mine. During 2019, a large open stope had an unplanned caving event resulting in the inability to extract the planned tonnes and subsequent sterilisation of nearby stopes. A design limitation was the lack of data and understanding around the alteration domain extents, the rock mass strength controls and limits, the failure modes controlling stope stability in the local area, and the use of conventional stope shapes. From the available data and failure observations, it was inferred that the dominant caving failure mode resulted from a blocky rock mass impacted by structure and alteration causing an unravelling failure mechanism. Numerical and empirical analyses were conducted to test this hypothesis and establish strength limits for design. The strength limits for the design were then used to provide a range of outcomes from which future stope design shapes such as chamfered backs could be selected. Three alternate chamfered geometries were selected to trial the innovative designs. The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

Approximately 420 VertiMills« (VTM) have been installed in mineral processing plants throughout the world, mainly in tertiary and regrind applications plus several in secondary grinding duties. Metso Minerals (Metso) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) have commenced a collaborative research program in stirred milling technology focusing on mill performance evaluation, model development and scale-up methodology. Industrial VTMs are being assessed using a consistent circuit survey protocol to evaluate the performance of VTMs in comminution circuits. The survey protocol includes identification and modification of sampling points, appropriate sampling techniques, controlled circuit stability, and best sample analysis practice. To initiate this study four surveys were conducted in the tertiary grind circuit in the Ridgeway Concentrator at Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) that treats the full circuit throughput of over 800 tph. To deal with the high feed rate the site opted to lead the world in the application of stirred mills by installing the largest VTM, at 3000 hp (2240kW) in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone bank. On average the operating work index was 13.1 kWh/t, reducing the secondary grind product by 40 - 50 ¦m to the required 80 to 100 ¦m range. The applied specific energy is relatively low in these low-intensity stirred media mills at 2.7 kWh/t. The size specific energy was 24.2 kWh/t-75¦m. Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.
