A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

The Mount Tom Price Concentrator, which contains a heavy medium cyclone plant for beneficiation of the -6+0.5mm fraction of low grade iron ore, is described. Testwork was carried out on an opportune basis over a period exceeding twelve months, to evaluate the separation performance of the heavy medium cyclones. Plastic density tracers were used and ore samples were taken and analysed. The effect of operating medium specific gravity (S.G.) on the separation parameters, the iron grade of the sinks product, and the mass and iron recoveries were investigated. Also examined were the differences in perform- ance between particles of different size. The implications of the findings for plant oper- ation are discussed.

Since the introduction of the Neil George Five Point Safety System, to the underground sections of The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines in March, 1969, the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate has been halved and shows signs of contin- uing to fall. The total accident frequency rate has also fallen, although the decrease has not been as significant. Before the introduction of the Neil George Safety System, analyses of the direct causes of accidents showed that approx- imately 25 per cent were caused by "unsafe conditions", while 75 per cent were attribu- table to "unsafe acts". Within twelve months of introducing the system, these percentages had significantly changed to 7 per cent unsafe conditions and 93 per cent unsafe acts. Today, the figures are 3 per cent and 97 per cent respectively, and these figures clearly show that the main emphasis in the current programme must be directed towards making the operating men safety conscious. The effort must be focused on changing the minds of men.

Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.

Gold and silver mineralisation at the Chatree low sulfidation deposit is hosted in andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks and characterised by multiple hydrothermal alteration assemblages and quartz-carbonate (chlorite-adularia) replacements, veins and breccias. The ore-bearing veins are influenced by intersecting structures and host rock lithologies. Emplacement of the host succession occurred at 250 ¦ 6 Ma (dated with laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb zircon techniques), which was closely followed by mineralisation at 250.9 ¦ 0.8 Ma based on the analysis of adularia from coarse-grained quartz-sulfide (chalcopyrite-pyrite- sphalerite) veins using laser ablation Ar-Ar methods. In the past ten years or so there has been a renewed interest worldwide in the processing of refractory gold ores. The Archean province of Western Australia contains both numerous and major gold deposits, and has a long history in the development and practise of treating refractory ores (eg Blaskett and Woodcock, 1953). Depletion of shallow oxidised ores in recent years has re-focused attention on deeper sulphidic ores, and as a consequence has renewed interest in treatment methods for those ores which are refractory. Mineralogical factors he at the heart of reasons as to why these ores are refractory, and are the key to designing and improving treatment options in the longer term. This paper presents an overview of mineralogical factors that are relevant to the processing of refractory gold ores in the Archean of Western Australia. It is based on a number of research projects and other work on a variety of gold deposits, mainly in the Eastern Goldfields region, carried out over the past five years or so.

Completing its historical role the opera tion of copper blast furnace of the Saganoseki Smelter was terminated in 1970, but it left some interesting data on metal lumps formed at the furnace bottom. Analysis disclosed the lumps to be speiss containing 100 to 10,000 g/t of Au and Ag and stratified to iron speiss and copper speiss. Solidifying temperatures of iron speiss and copper speiss being approximately 1,090¦C and 800¦C respectively, copper speiss precipitated at the lower side. The distribution coefficient of Au and Ag between matte and speiss (g/t Au(Ag) in matte / g/t Au(Ag) in speiss) is in the range of 1 x 10 2 to 2 x 10 ' and 1 x 10 1 to 5 respectively. The higher Cu % is in speiss, the-more An and Ag are distributed into speiss. Except for a few data, these results comfotm well to the range of distribution equilibria of Au and Ag in matte and speiss systems by Gerlach and Others.

The constraints in university courses are lack of hours, high cost of scientific equipment, and poor availability of suitably experienced staff. These have forced the balance away from practical work and towards more theory. Labelling of individuals as either practical, or academic, does not help the inter- change of staff between industry and univer- sities that is necessary to balance idealism and realism. Practical men who do return to universities may lose seniority and find that industry is reluctant to have them back. Academics who specialise too long may concentrate on their research to the exclusion of basic material. It is difficult to operate pilot scale plants in universities because of lack of time, and obsolescent equipment. Small grants from industry might enable tests to be run in research laboratories such as at C.S.I.R.O.. Within universities there may be a need for greater interchange of students among depart- ments, aided by the absence of weighted student unit measurements, as suggested by Aus.I.M.M. and A.M.I.C.

The paper describes the development and analysis of an instability database to establish a new method of slope stability assessment for U.K. surface coal mines. The concept is based upon a Stability Index, which relates to the probability of failure of a slope. This forms the basis for a geotechnical planning software package to be incorporated into a computer aided mine design system , which is currently under development.

The target quality of the treated water also is discussed. Equipment selections are reviewed and reasons given as to why certain choices were made. Structure is an important control in the localisation of gold mineralisation in epithermal systems. There has been, however, only limited investigation of the structural elements involved; such a study is currently directed at the gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). Here, mineralised veining and brecciation ranges up to tens of metres in thickness. Dips of veins are mostly steep, but not vertical, and there is a significant number of low angle veins. The structural control of epithermal deposits may be considered on four scales. At the mega-tectonic scale, pre-volcanism fault patterns mostly relate to separation of the New Zealand micro-continent from Gondwana. The major structural controls on mineralisation at this scale, however, are associated with the volcanic arc processes responsible for the CVZ. Post-mineralisation faulting are linked to the Hauraki Rift and the Colville Ridge-Havre Trough system. Regional scale faults controlling the distribution of gold deposits are the product of these tectonic events; much of the faulting may relate to rifting and calderas, but further work is required to demonstrate this. Detailed study is also needed on vein systems at the prospect scale to validate models of brittle deformation responsible for such systems. Evidence that a variety of structural mechanisms dominated in different deposits is found at the vein scale, with Coromandel gold deposits being classified according to their different styles of vein-fill texture.

Drill and blast operations account for 12 - 15 per cent of total mining costs. This paper looks at a comparison between electronic detonators and non-electric detonators, focusing on the cost benefits associated with the high precision of the timing sequences of electronic detonators. An analysis of the total mining costs was made on two main case studies; one on a quarry in South Australia (Martin, 2007) and the other on a project undertaken at Sunrise Dam (Vaughan et al, 2007). The criteria used in the analysis included; the resulting fragmentation, a vibration analysis, crusher throughput and productivity analysis such as excavator cycle times, dig rates of the excavator and bucket fill factor. The results indicate that there were consistent production improvements and hence reductions in total mining costs attributed to the use of electric detonators. An increase in the degree of fragmentation gives lower crushing costs as more material passes through as undersize. This reduces truck delay time at the crusher, which in turn gives higher truck and shovels productivity as well as higher dig rates for the excavators.

The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? `Oh,' he said, `from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources.

The location of the Inglewood Goldfield is 40 km north-west of Bendigo on the Calder Highway and covers an area of over 1600 hectares. The field was discovered during the 1850s gold rush and over 16 000 people camped on the field. Mining first began in 1859 and since then more than seven tonnes of gold has been removed from four major lines of reef. Most of the gold was won in the period between 1900 and 1940.. Goldquest NL currently has leases over approximately 1550 hectares and through its historical research has identified 142 known reefs.

The Lower Palaeozoic Woolomin Association is composed of chert and jasper (often radiolarian), siliceous argillite, the mafic volcanics with associated hyaloclastites, and occasional greywacke and limestone lenses. Several "Cyprus-type", conformable pyritic copper (+/- zinc and cobalt} sulphide lenses are spatially related to individual mafic volcanic units and manganiferous chert and/or jasper. The Association has been interpreted to represent an oceanic crustal remnant generated either in an island arc environment (Herbert, 1981) or at a divergent plate boundary (Scheibner and Glen, 1972; Leitch, 1974a, 1975) later to be obducted, or tectonically emplaced, into continental crust; the adjacent Peel Fault was considered to be the palaeo-obduction zone (Scheibner and Glen, 1972) and the associated alpine-type mafic/ultramafic complex, an ophiolite (Crook and Felton,1975).

The mineral exploration industry is increasingly aware of the importance of the relationship between mineralogical data and geochemical assay results. However, until recently, the cost and time constraints of most techniques for analysing alteration mineralogy have precluded detailed alteration studies. These impediments have been reduced by the development of the Portable Infrared Mineral Analyser (PIMA), a field portable infrared spectrometer that allows rapid (in field) and cost effective analysis of alteration minerals including subtle variations in mineral crystallinity and Composition.

A large amount of wastes from the preparation plant is produced. The properties of these wastes vary depending on the mineralogical contents of the mother rock in which the coal is embedded. The waste quality depends on the method of mining and cleaning. The waste mainly consists of clays, quartz, carbonaceous materials, mica, pyrites and so on. About 55 per cent of coal-ash is now utilised and the remains are disposed of at the disposal sites, however, the life of the disposal site is limited. Moreover, it is difficult to find new disposal sites. Therefore, it is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the coal-ash be increased in every field in Japan. So, it is very much available if the injection material for natural/artificial openings can be applied on the cement that is added to flyash. Among the man-made pozzolans, a flyash is probably the most successful component used in grout injection. When flyash is added to Portland cement concrete, the same kinds of oxides as those of the cement are being added. As an injection component, flyash acts, in part, as a fine aggregate and, in part, as a binding component. However, there is not a substantial alteration of the properties of the original component. From these points of view, in order to clarify to what degree the flyash content affects the properties of the injected grout mixture; different combinations of flyash, Portland cement and water were considered by means of several experiments.
