Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

This paper describes an integrated approach to the evaluation of ore loss and ore dilution via geostatistical simulation of in situ geology and grade characteristics, simulation of blasting mechanisms and simulation of loading from a blast muck pile. The approach is demonstrated on a case study. The sequential Gaussian method is used to simulate in situ bench grades on the scale of the smallest selectable volume within a blast muck pile. The simulated grades of these component volumes are interpreted as the reality that would be available with exhaustive sampling. The simulated bench is subjected to a blast simulator, based on the SCRAMBLE model, which effectively moves each of the component model volumes to its final resting place in the blast muck pile. Ore/waste delineation and selective loading processes are applied to the simulated muck pile to determine the degree of selectivity that can be achieved by various sizes of loader and types of loading and to quantify ore dilution and ore loss. An in situ model representing the reality of knowing only the data and information that are available from specific grade control drilling and sampling grids is obtained by sampling the geostatistically simulated model on a specified grid. The volumes comprising the in situ model are then populated by estimates based only on the data and from the specified grade control drilling and sampling grids. Different drilling and sampling grids are used to generate different models, each reflecting the levels of data and information available. Selectivity is assessed as a function of the drilling and sampling grids as well as the size and type of loader. Performance is assessed against the ideal selectivity that could be achieved on the perfect knowledge model comprising the simulated values of each component volume. Costs, prices and financial criteria enable an optimal selection of the grade control drilling grid, size of loader, type of loading and blast design.

At the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines, the largest diluent of the copper concentrate is liberated fine pyrite. Laboratory flotation tests carried out as a function of grind and flotation Eh in combination with surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have identified the major mechanisms of iron sulphide flotation. It was found that a significant proportion of the iron sulphide minerals had surface coverages of graphitic carbon, sufficient to impart moderate hydrophobicity in the absence of collector. A smaller, but economically significant proportion of chalcopyrite was also affected by the graphitic carbon coating. Two methods were tested to reduce the impact of the natural floatability of the iron sulphides on concentrate grades. 1. Depression through the use of organic depressants. 2. Preflotation to remove the "naturally hydrophobic" iron sulphides (flotation independant of Eh ) prior to chalcopyrite flotation. Preflotation was tested at the pilot plant scale. It was found that the amount of chalcopyrite reporting to the preflotation rougher concentrate could be minimised through flotation at a mildly reducing Eh by the use of nitrogen as the flotation gas to maintain the low Eh conditions resulting from grinding. The preflotation rougher concentrate was upgraded to an iron sulphide concentrate or a low grade copper concentrate.

Maps of mineral grade used to assess mineral reserves are most commonly generated using one of the many estimation methods available such as inverse distance weighting or ordinary kriging. Most such maps incorporate a degree of spatial smoothing which is an integral part of the averaging process. In deposits with highly variable grade which include many gold deposits, this smoothing can mask the detailed geometry of the mineralization at the economic cutoff grades being considered. In underground mining, a knowledge of this geometry is important in the choice of mining method and thus in the assessment of the minable reserves.The method of conditional simulation in geostatistics can be used to generate maps of grade which reflect the actual spatial variability of grade as measured through the variograms of the drill hole data. Simulated maps can provide a number of equiprobable images of the mineralization geometry from which a more appropriate mining model of the mineralization can be developed. Multiple simulations can also be used to assess the uncertainty existing in the current knowledge of the reserves.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. Middle and Late Cenozoic fluvial conglomerates and gravel in northeastern Southland record the transport of alluvial gold from Central Otago into Southland, and subsequent reworking and concentration of this gold into economic placer deposits. A corridor of geochemically distinctive, Hg-free gold derived ultimately from veins in Torlesse Terrane schist in Otago extends through the Caples Terrane and into Southland. The initial repository in Southland was fluvial sediment of the East Southland Group, specifically weakly auriferous, quartzose delta plain strata of the Gore Lignite Measures (GLM), a downstream equivalent of Dunstan Formation in Central Otago. Miocene uplift along the northwest trending Old Man Range beheaded the parent river system, isolating GLM from its Central Otago source area and establishing the proto-Waikaia River system. Rising topography between Otago and Southland increased fluvial gradients, and initiated erosion of cover strata and a sequence of tectonically induced gold recycling events. Auriferous GLM were recycled from the hinterland into broad braided fluvial channel and floodplain deposits of the Waikaia Group (new), specifically the highly auriferous Waikaka Quartz Gravels and equivalent Waimumu Quartz Gravels downstream (WQG), superimposing more proximal depositional environments over parts of the former GLM delta plain. WQG were deformed, and locally cannibalised during the later stages of their deposition by reverse movement on north-northeast trending faults of the Dunsdale System (NW side up). Increased tempo of uplift in the hinterland (Old Man, Garvie, Umbrella, and Blue Mountain Ranges) in the Pliocene and early Quaternary resulted in further reworking of GLM and WkQG from the hinterland as well as basement erosion. Progressively more basement-rich detritus was deposited as a locally auriferous piedmont (Gore Piedmont Gravels - GPG) over earlier channel and delta plain (GLM, WQG) strata, extending from the Blue Mountains to Waikaia, and southward through the Gore Gap to beyond Mataura. Southward propagation of the north-northeast trending ranges, local warping, and uplift of the Murihiku Terrane in Pliocene and Quaternary progressively deflected GPG fluvial systems and ultimately constrained them to the present valleys. Pre-existing auriferous strata (GLM, WQG, GPG) were reworked and deposited with or without basement detritus as these fluvial systems migrated toward their present positions. Auriferous remnants of these transitional deposits are preserved in local structural depressions on the uplifted blocks that deflected the systems (eg King Solomon Mine), and on locally abandoned floodplain segments on the lowlands (Pebbly Hills-Gore Gap). The present drainage has continued to incise and cannibalise its own and earlier deposits during late Pleistocene-Recent uplift to form confined channel placers within the present valleys.

Close circuiting autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is anenergy efficient way of grinding and a number of operations haveutilised this in the design of their comminution circuits. Owing tothe large flow of slurry through the mill that results fromoperating this way the grates and pulp lifters have to be designedto cope. However, the literature has little or no information onhow grate and pulp lifter size and design are related to theirability to remove slurry from the mill. Over the last few years theJKMRC has been researching this area and has developedrelationships between grate/pulp lifter design and flowratecapacity. At the same time it has determined the major causes ofpulp lifter inefficiency and a solution to preventing thisinefficiency (the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter). This paperdescribes the models that have been developed through thisprogram and uses industrial scale data to illustrate their accuracy.Results from the industrial trials of the Twin Chamber PulpLifter are also presented.

The aim of the paper was to model numerically some aspects of the extraction of coal pillars by split and fendering. A two-dimensional elasto-plastic plane strain model with strain softening and interface mod- elling was used. The model was able to simulate the improvement of conditions experienced in lifting from the fender, when the roof adjacent to the fender has caved. In contrast, when a stook was left, providing support to a span of uncaved roof, the model pre- dicted the fender would suffer considerably more de- formation and strain.

One of the strategies introduced within Pasminco Mining to survive low commodity prices is to formally implement a `Quality Education System'. The net result has been a consistent approach to quality within and across mine sites. This `quality system' has been adopted in the technical computing environment and the immediate benefits have been: ò A clearer understanding of the systems, processes and relationships that involve technical computing. ò A re-focussing on customer (user) requirements. ò Inclusion of managers as customers with their own requirements of performance and quality, in addition to access to Executive Information. ò New ways to measure the `performance' of a technical computing environment which includes using maintenance costs. Observations are that there is an overlap between `traditional' information technology (IT) methodologies and quality systems being put in place in the broader workplace. This overlap is most apparent in the area of analysing customer requirements. In the IT environment customers are viewed as users, and their requirements determined by undertaking a requirements analysis. A data flow diagram traditionally used in the IT environment and not as a tool in quality systems, has been used in a novel manner to help identify the customers of the technical computing department. It has also been useful in illustrating the work processes and relationships between the entities in this diagram and in directing the future initiatives needed to fulfil the customers' changing requirements.

Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental and economic concern, resulting in regulation of the mining industry and significant water treatment costs. An interdisciplinary approach is needed to analyze the many aspects of a complex acid drainage problem. This paper describes the integrated application of techniques from the following fields to the characterization of acid drainage at a large underground lead-zinc mine: 1) hydrogeology, 2) surface stream analysis, 3) structural analysis of fracture distribution, 4) hydrochemistry, 5) geostatistics, and 6) multivariate statistics. The Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho, is developed in highly fractured and faulted quartzites and discharges 95 L/sec of water with an average pH of 2.8 and an average zinc concentration of 120 mg/L. Research has been conducted on all aspects of the acid water production and drainage problem. Recharge to the mine has been investigated using geophysical techniques and tracer studies. Fracture mapping and geostatistical analysis of the fracture data have been used to determine characteristics of inflow to the mine workings. Hydrograph analysis techniques have been applied to water flow data within the underground workings. Chemical sampling and analysis have been used to identify acid producing workings, and better understand mechanisms controlling acid water production. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to analyze the quality and flow data. Research results from the many subprojects of the Bunker Hill study reveal the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of acid mine drainage problems.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.

The Quiruvilca district, located 80 km east of Trujillo in north central Peru (Fig. 1), has produced over eight million tons of Cu-Pb- Zn-Ag ore from approximately 60 veins since 1789. "Quiruvilca means "sacred tooth" in Quechua, the lingua franca of the Incas. The expression refers to a prominent volcanic neck exposed several kilometers northeast of the district. The district covers an area of approx- imately 24 km2. The mines occupy the eastern quarter; workings underlie 6.7 km2 with a developed vertical range of 280 m. All pres- ently operating workings are owned by Corpora- cion Minera Nor Peru S.A., a subsidiary of ASARCO Incorporated. The oldest rocks in the area are Lower Cretaceous clastic sedimentary rocks exposed 7 km to the east. Lithologies include sand- stone, siltstone, shale, coal seams, and carbonates (Cossio, 1964). These rocks were folded and affected by regional low-grade metamorphism during the early Tertiary, 40-65 m.y. (Hollister, 1977).

Australia has a large resource of manganese at BHP's Groote Eylandt mine which has been progressively developed over the last two decades. While much of the product is marketed internationally to the iron and steel industry, substantial quantities are processed in Australia at the Company's ferro alloy works in Tasmania. In addition, small but increasing quantities of ore are being consumed by the non-metallurgical industry. Fluctuating fortunes in the steel industry produce similar trends in the marketing of manganese. The increasing cost of freight and power together with strict environmental control is further affecting the market balance. Mine operators are expanding into the alloy making field. Reduction in usage in less developed countries is occurring.

The cost-effectiveness of blasts involving radiating blastholes is cur- rently restricted in the following ways. (a) Significant percentages of potential explosion energy are not being liberated; the collar sections of some charges are being dislocated and/or desensitised by the detonations of adjacent earlier-firing charges. (b) If the minimum charge spacing is too small, detonation of an early- firing charge can initiate an adjacent charge sympathetically, thereby eliminating the benefit of any intended inter-charge delay. (c) The overall distribution of energy is poor. Appreciably better fragmentation would be achieved if current drill- ing patterns were to be replaced by staggered fans/rings having a toe spac- ing : burden ratio of about 4 : 1. This wide-spaced pattern would enable a higher percentage of the potential energy to be released, would reduce the incidence of sympathetic detonation and would provide a superior overall distribution of this liberated energy. If improved fragmentation is not required, the proposed fan/ring design should allow a significant expansion of the blasthole pattern with consequential cost savings in drill- ing, explosives and initiation.

The mined-out Old Waite volcanogenic Cu-Zn deposit lies in the Noranda mining district of northwestern Quebec. The deposit has a distinctive pipe-like zone of alteration beneath the massive ore, extending into the stratigraphic footwall. The hydrothermal metasomatism within the alteration pipe produced a concentric zonation. with a peripheral quartz - sericite - chlorite mineral assemblage surrounding an axial core of magnesian chlorite - Phlogopite.

Seventy-nine gold deposits and prospects have been discoveried in the Jiamusi region of northeast China, and constitute one of the most important gold metallogenic belts in China. All these endogenic gold occurrences can be subdivided into three main deposit types: (1) porphyry related; (2) metamorphic-intrusive hosted, and (3) sediment-hosted deposit. The first two types of gold deposit are spatially and temporally related to Mesozoic Yanshanian granitoid intrusions with hydrothermal activity channelled along crustal-scale fissures. The ultimate cause of the Yanshanian magmatism is considered to be the subduction of Pacific oceanic lithosphere beneath the Eurasian continent. In contrast, The chemical sediment-hosted deposit is typified by the Dongfengshan gold deposit, and genetically related to Proterozoic sedimentation and Mesozoic igneous activities.

The Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline form a chrono- stratigraphic sequence of mainly greenschist- and amphibolite-grade shallow-marine to supratidal pelites, psammites, carbonate rocks, and volcaniclastics which in places rests unconformably on Archaean basement. Granite and later dolerite intrude the sequence, and are associated with the major orogenic 1800-m.y. event which regionally metamorphosed the sediments. Most mineralisation is stratabound, and can be related at least partly to volcanic activity. Uranium mineralisation is mainly confined to particular carbonate-rich horizons near basement. Other metals are mainly in small hydrothermal deposits near intrusive granite. Specialist studies indicate that uranium was leached from its source rock, and probably carried as carbonate complexes in highly saline fluids at between 100 and 3500 C. Precipitation took place by redox reactions in breccia zones in carbonate rocks; these zones were formed by carbonate solution or diapiric movement of evaporites which preceded the carbonate. Extensive chloritisation in the ore zones suggests metasomatism by Fe- and Mg-rich fluids which may have evolved during dewatering of the evaporites. Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located on Sumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54000m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2km2 and to a depth of 1000m below surface (412m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55g/t Au (variable cutoff) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource. The deposit is associated with a caic-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200m diameter at surface to 500m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbldykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.
