Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). The geological features of the destructive plate margins of the southwest Pacific favour the formation of porphyry type deposits. The major controlling factor favouring the formation of gold-rich deposits of this type is a dense crust. This results in shallow intrusion of large magma bodies beneath andesite stratovolcanoes. Where the intrusives have near vertical sides, the comparatively low temperature of transfer of volatiles from the solidifying melt favours the partitioning of gold into bubbles of volatiles. They reduce the viscosity and density of the melt, resulting in the upward movement of a mineralised melt. With the drop of pressure with upward movement the bubbles separate into a two phase mixture, triggering freezing of the mineralised melt and the formation of a gold mineralised stockwork.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

In 1974 a preliminary study of the refractories industry in theRepublic of Indonesia was completed by Crown Lynn Consultants, a subsidiary of Cerarnco Ltd., on behalf of the Indonesian and New Zealand Governments. As a result of recommendations arising from that study the two Governments commissioned, in 1976, as a Bilateral Assistance project, an investigation into the potential of the refractories industry in Indonesia. Ceramco Ltd., was retained to carry out the study on behalf of the New Zealand Government. The Directorate-General of Chemical Industries, Directorate of Silicate Industries administered the project on behalf of the Indonesian Government. Indonesian counterparts to the New Zealand study team were provided by the Directorate of Silicate Industries.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

Computer modelling is being used to simulate rock fracture, caving and stress redistribution about longwall panels with increasing confidence. The models are being assessed against field monitoring and have significantly increased the understanding of caving mechanics within the overburden. This paper discusses the modelling approach and provides some examples of its application to overburden damage and induced hydraulic conductivity. Computer models used in this study simulate the fracture process in the geological units throughout the overburden. Analysis of the mining induced fracture patterns and in situ joint patterns allows an estimation of the hydraulic conductivity within the overburden. The cubic flow relationship has been used in the examples presented.

The basement contact zone, a major fault structure underlying the copper orebodies at Mount Isa, has a significant influence on orebody extraction. The zone is comprised of a variety of weak, barren lithologies which often create very difficult mining conditions, contribute to stope dilution, and have an adverse effect on concentrator recoveries.The geological characteristics of the contact zone are described, and the importance of timely, accurate geological information emphasized.A variety of mine design strategies have been employed to reduce the impact of the contact zone on orebody extraction. Some of these are discussed, together with current trends in the southern areas where orebody geometry and hence mining methods change markedly.Recent developments in ground support techniques, such as cable dowel reinforcement, have significantly improved ground conditions in the contact zone. An example of the methods employed to improve knowledge of ground behaviour is presented. The trend towards increasing automation and larger equipment requires larger excavations; consequently ground support practices and knowledge of ground behaviour must continue to advance. Rock mechanics investigations will remain an essential part of the mine design process.

The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937. Extraction and Characterisation of Extracellular Polymeric Substances from the Mineral Surface During Bioleaching of Chalcopyrite Concentrate A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was used to bioleach chalcopyrite concentrate in a stirred tank reactor. The results show that up to 84.7 per cent of copper extraction could be achieved in 24 days at a pulp density of 6 per cent. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite concentrate tended to increase with an increase of dissolved total iron concentration. Furthermore, the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on the surface of the chalcopyrite concentrate was extracted and analysed. EPS was extracted at the first, third, eighth, 16th and 24th day during bioleaching, which mainly consisted of proteins, lipids, sugars and ferric irons. After the eighth day the total amount of EPS remained relatively constant. However, the amount of ferric iron in the EPS decreased in a large scale. The ore residue analysis indicates that the decrease of ferric iron was mainly due to the formation of jarosite on the mineral surface.

The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

A new rapid spectroscopic core and chip logging and imaging system developed by CSIRO was evaluated by PIRSA and GA on a wide variety of mineralised properties in South Australia, including the Emmie Bluff, iron oxide copper-gold-style prospect on the Stuart Shelf. During a three-month campaign in South Australia in 2003 the system logged over 50 000 metres of core from the State Core Library, company prospects and mines. The new system uses automated core tray handling, continuous visible and infrared spectroscopy, and digital imaging, to characterise and identify dominant mineral species on core, chips and pulps, at spatial resolutions of ~1 cm (spectral data) and ~0.1 mm (image data). The system can log up to 1000 m of core per day and several thousand metres of drill chips. Mineralogy is pre-interpreted using specialised identification software trained on a selected suite of minerals showing characteristic absorption features within the measured spectral range. On core from the Emmie Bluff iron oxide copper-gold prospect, 470 km NW of Adelaide and 80 km SSE of the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au deposit, the spectral mapping system was able to characterise a number of alteration zones enveloping the sub-economic Cu-Au mineralisation. These consist of distal white mica phases showing decreasing Al content towards mineralisation, a zone of increased iron oxide content in the hangingwall to mineralisation, and a zone proximal and coincident to Cu-Au mineralisation that is enriched in chlorite with variable Mg/Fe chemistry. Additionally the results show background spectral characteristics that mimic the magnetite distribution.

On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

Based on the author's research and plant practice experience of the last decade, several technological approaches have been developed to increase the recovery of gold and silver associated with sulphides. This paper gives a general discussion of some technological problems encountered in this area in five aspects and introduces the different approaches employed in three typical mineral processing plants to increase recovery of associated gold and silver. On the basis of studying occurrence characteristics of gold and silver minerals in sulphide ores and of determining loss locations of gold and silver on flotation process, a remarkable improvement on the recovery of gold and silver in all these three plants was made by choosing proper grinding fineness, using combined collectors of good selectivity, properly decreasing the grade of main metal concentrates, making reasonable arrangement of the products of main metals, or a combination thereof.

The detonation pressure of ANFO can be significantly reduced by the addition of low density materials such as polystyrene, bagasse, swadust or perlite. Laboratory and field test results have shown that homogene- ous mixtures of these low density explosives can be produced in a bowl truck and loaded into a blasthole without segregation. The detonation pressure of the mixture can be altered to be more compatible with the material in which it is being used by varying the quantity of low density additive incorporated into the mixture. Field results have shown that these low density explosives can lead to significant cost savings without com- promising fragmentation or production.

Following the perception by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company of a need to further beneficiate a fines product, and preliminary metallurgical testing to demonstrate the feasibility of such beneficiation, a comparison was made of the various configurations of cyclonic heavy medium separators available. This comparison consisted of (i) a pilot plant test in which a dynawhirlpool (DWP) and a pump fed cyclone were compared, and (ii) a survey of operating plants using the systems under consideration. Little metallurgical difference was found-between the different systems. The gravity fed cyclone configuration was finally chosen based on a particular need to minimise degradation of ore and on a desire, in so isolated a location, to use established and locally supported technology.

Structural geological information is widely used at the Mt Whaleback Mine, Newman, WA. Recent improvements in the structural understanding of Mt Whaleback are providing a very cost-effective way of reducing geological risk, improving the economics of mining, optimising pit design and addressing safety problems. The structure of the Mt Whaleback orebody is highly complex and has a significant influence not only on iron ore genesis but also on pit wall stability. A team approach between the Structural Geology and Geomechanics Groups has been providing excellent results to reduce geological risk at Mt Whaleback.

The way they do This has an impact on the risk to a project. This is discussed and examples are taken from the Northern Territory uranium industry. Improvements in technology should be incorporated at an appropriate time and place. The personnel concerned should be properly trained and motivated to receive the changes in machinery and technology. Strict adherence to prescribed parameters, optimum utilisation of man, machinery and operating supplies help in the smooth functioning of the plant and in achieving maximum gains.
