Tomago sandbeds is an unconfined coastal aquifer located 20km. north of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. These sandbeds extend over an area of about 130km. The average aquifer depth is about 20m. with a mean transmissivity of about 400sq.m/day and a specific yield of about 0.2. The city of Newcastle and surrounding areas derive water from Tomago for potable purposes. The average extraction being about 50 ML/day. The iron value of the ground water varies between 5 and 15mg/1. This iron is removed by a conventional water treatment plant using Alum. The aquifer whilst principally quartzose also contains deposits of heavy minerals like rutile, zircon, ilmenite, etc., The mineral sand mining has been in progress at Tomago since 1972. Mining is carried out in a con- structed pond with a water depth of about 5m. on which is floated a suction cutter dredge that moves across the front of the pond using a water jet to entrain the soil from the ground surface to the bottom of the mineralised zone. Effect of mineral sand mining on ground water quality, particularly iron, was the subject of intensive investigations undertaken at Tomago since 1970. The effect on water quality was studied by collecting and analysing water samples from network of observation wells established during the period of mining. Water samples were collected about 4-5 years prior to mining and analysed for iron, sulphate, chloride, pH, etc., After mining the observation wells were re-established at the same locations and water samples were collected and analysed for at least 5 years after mining. Failure to replenish our mineral stocks will threaten man's economic and social well-being, and it is vital that future directions of metallogenic research are considered carefully to ensure that research funds are applied wisely to underwrite our future.Today we are witnessing the declining phase of the era of easy exploration. The rate of discovery of shallow orebodies is slowing. This is very evident for base-metal deposits but is becoming increasingly apparent for gold deposits. By explosion rock mass behaviour is conditioned by preset complex of rocks natural characteristics. Very important role of blockness, which is percent (share) content at examining massif of natural separatenesses of different dimensions and configurations, separated each from other by the cracks of geological and technogene origin. Besides natural properties of massif the power, detonational characteristics of applied explosives, parameters of explosives charges disposition at massif and technology of explosion influence vastly at lumpiness (granulometric structure) of exploded rocks. The mathematical model of rock mass destruction by explosion had been elaborated and substantiated. It ties mutually the initial data (rocks properties, parameters of the charges disposition) and final results of explosion (granulometric structure of exploded rocks). The program of this complicated problem solving had been compiled. Analysing the received results of the problem solving, one can reveal contribution of each group of influence factors for lumpiness of exploded rocks. This fact creates preconditions for elimination or diminution of negative role of some controlled initial data.

In 1975, following a programme of solution characterization and small scale laboratory test work, a pilot plant was constructed to treat waste liquors from the Risdon works. The plant was designed basically to neutralize liquor to a desired pH, and to flocculate, thicken and then filter the resultant pulps. The primary objective was to purify waste liquors to stand- ards set by Tasmanian environmental regulations and at the same time to provide design data for construction of a full scale treatment facility. Waste liquors were divided into two groups, those from the Zinc Plant, and those from the Acid and Superphosphate Plants, and were treated independently. To satisfactorily purify Zinc Plant waste liquors the following reaction sequence was required: 1. Neutralization to pH 10.5 (with aeration for Mn removal). 2. Further reaction of neutralized pulp with Na2S at an addition rate of typically 5 mg of S2-/litre of liquor treated to remove Cd.

A belt of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits and occurrences extends for over 150 km along the southern margin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the eastern Alaska Range. The VMS bodies occur mainly in the Jarvis Creek Glacier subterrane (JCGS), one of the highest structural/ stratigraphic levels of the Yukon-Tanana terrane. The JCGS consists of a VMS--bearing metavolcanic rock member and a metasedimentary rock member. The VMS deposits and enclosing rocks exhibit two periods of regional metamorphism.From northwest to southeast, the major VMS districts are the Bonnifield, Hayes Glacier, McGinnis Glacier, and Delta districts. The Bonnifield, Hayes and McGinnis Glacier district sulfide bodies consist of pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, with or without arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena. The larger, 800 km Delta district deposits and occurrences contain variable amounts of pyrite and pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of primarily chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, and arsenopyrite.The sulfide accumulations are interpreted as Kuroko-like deposits that formed along the submarine volcanic part of a Devonian, continental-margin igneous arc. U-Pb isotopic data from zircons from the metavolcanic rocks indicate an age of about 370 Ma (Devonian). 207Pb/204Pb ratios for sulfides from the districts are similar and indicate lead was in part derived from first cycle sediments eroded largely from Precambrian crystalline rocks. 207Pb/204Pb ratios from feldspars in Devonian metavolcanic rocks are similar to those in sulfides, and indicate incorporation of radiogenic Precambrian lead into the Devonian magmas. A Precambrian crystalline source for quartz in metasedimentary rocks is indicated by 2.3 Ga old zircons. Common-lead isotope studies of igneous phenocrysts in metaigneous rocks and sulfides in volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits indicate a unique isotopic signature. The data permit an exotic origin of the Yukon-Tanana terrane with respect to North America.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. In response to the increase in consumption of galvanised steel for automobiles in the last decade and the problems associated with remelting larger quantities of galvanised steel scrap, a process is being developed to separate and recover the steel and zinc from galvanised ferrous scrap. The zinc is dissolved from the scrap in hot caustic using anodic assistance and is recovered electrolytically as dendritic powder. The dezinced ferrous scrap is rinsed and used directly. The process is effective for zinc, lead, and aluminum removal on loose and baled scrap and on all types of galvanised steel. The process has been pilot tested for batch treatment of 900 tonnes of mostly baled scrap. A pilot plant to treat continuously loose scrap, with a design capacity of 48 000 tonnes annually, has been in operation in East Chicago, Indiana since early in 1993. The first 450 t of scrap degalvanised in the pilot plant have residual zinc below 0.01 per cent and sodium dragout below 0.01 per cent. Use of degalvanised steel scrap decreases raw materials, environmental compliance costs, and opportunity costs to steel- and iron-makers. Availability of clean degalvanised scrap may enable integrated steel producers to recycle furnace dusts to the sinter plant and EAF shops to produce flat products without the use of high quality scrap alternatives such as DRI, pig iron, or iron carbide. Recycling the components of galvanised steel scrap saves primary energy, decreases zinc imports, and adds value to the scrap. The quantities of zinc available by the year 2000 from prompt and obsolete automotive scrap will approach 25 per cent of zinc consumed in the major automotive production centres of the world. Zinc recycling from galvanised steel scrap, either before or after scrap melting, will have to be Implemented.

Consistent slag blow end point detection remains one of the challenges in the Peirce-Smith converters at Mount Isa MinesÆ Copper Smelter. Under blowing results in foaming on copper blow and carry forward of oxide skims to the anode furnace. Over blowing results in high copper losses to the slag. Both present safety issues and contribute to lower copper production. The end points of the slag making phases are assessed by inspection of a bar sample. A bar sample is a thin accretion layer that adheres to a steel bar when it is inserted into the tuyere while the converter is blowing. This method is biased and subjective, so there is heavy reliance on operator experience. The Semtech Optical Process Control (OPC) system was installed in early 2002 for converter slag blow end point detection. Initial plant trials did not improve all aspects of converter operations, and uptake by operators was poor, so the system was not used. In early 2005, the Semtech OPC system was re-visited and another short trial was conducted to evaluate the permanent use of the system for slag and copper blow end point detection. During this trial, the Semtech OPC method was found to be superior to bar sampling for slag blow end point detection. The implementation and refurbishment of the Semtech OPC system has resulted in plant improvements and given a better insight into converter operation during blowing. Oxide skim generation carried forward to the anode furnace has been shown to decrease with increasing compliance with Semtech OPC. Some of the expected improvements to converter operation were not found to be significant. Semtech OPC is now well received and utilised by converter operators. Individual paper available only. This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and cesting campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and altei._acive, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic Fill.

Pounamu is a MSori collective term for semi-precious stone scientifically referred to as nephrite, semi-nephrite, jade or bowenite (tangiwai) that is composed predominantly of metamorphic tremolite in a felted, fibrous texture. It is Aotearoa/New ZealandÆs icon mineral material. Ownership and management of this important taonga (treasure) has been vested in Te Rnnanga o NgSi Tahu as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement process. Increasing demand from the tourist, jewellery, fashion and sculpture industries, as well as cultural renaissance, has placed pressure on the pounamu resource. This had led to nephrite importation, allegations that foreign material is being marketed falsely as New Zealand pounamu, and wider concerns over the potential for exploitation/over-use and theft of genuine pounamu.   Research is underway to characterise different pounamu source regions by defining their ægenetic fingerprintÆ. The geological age and radiogenic isotopic composition of Aotearoa/New Zealand pounamu is distinguished from other nephrite jade occurrences overseas, due to relatively young cooling ages. Strontium isotope ratios distinguish pounamu from different source areas within Aotearoa/New Zealand (whakapapa), with signatures reflecting the host terrane rocks (their family) and their position in a sequence of metamorphic events (their generation). The research will provide a tool for archaeological research, trademark and resource protection.   Mineral resource assessments normally aim to define the total volume/tonnage present, which is generally assumed to be finite, applying drilling and geostatistical modelling. Pounamu resource assessment requires a different approach, as its intrinsic value is insufficient to warrant modern exploration methods (eg drilling, geophysics). Pounamu is only known to occur at a restricted few in-situ (hard-rock) localities. It is primarily found in transported (alluvial) detrital river and glacial outwash deposits, where collectable material has short term variability due to erosion and transport processes. A new methodology is being developed aiming to define: +        the total resource present, +        the relative rate of change in the availability of that resource through erosion and other geological processes, +        active areas where new material is likely to be exposed (eg by erosion), and +        appropriate extraction rates for sustainable use. The methodology will provide a holistic overview of the resource in different regions of Aotearoa/New Zealand, and may be applicable to other transient or restricted natural resources that occur within geologically active environments (eg supplies of driftwood on beaches).

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. A non-notified resource consent was sought which necessitated that environmental effects be shown to be æless than minorÆ, and resulted from robust science and a pragmatic approach to design. As part of the assessment of environmental effects, there was a need to understand the effects of boron concentrations on aquatic organisms (ie algae, plankton, plants and invertebrates) in the receiving environment. Boron is a naturally occurring element that is found in the form of borates in the oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal, shale, and in some soils but Waikato coals and ashes have particularly high boron content. Boron is an essential micronutrient for higher plants with interspecies differences in the levels required for optimum growth. As aspects of the ANZECC (2000) derived boron limits are based on toxicity of aquatic algae and plants to boron it was important to assess these components in the environment. The effects on the receiving environment of the Awaroa Stream were assessed using predicted water chemistry and comparing actual boron concentrations in a comprehensive and multifaceted reference-condition approach of catchment ecological indicators. In addition a toxicological-based assessment of boron and a re-calculation of the ANZECC trigger levels were undertaken and applied to the ecological indicators. The reference-condition approach revealed that habitat and overall water quality attributes at and between sites was more influential in determining the aquatic biotic communities than boron concentrations alone. There was no evidence of any gradient of changes in ecological indicators with changing boron concentrations, nor evidence of any residual effect of high historic boron concentrations on the aquatic biota.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

A brief descri;tioki is given of nuclear power reactors and their fuels. These fuels are made from a variety of uranium compounds such as uranium dioxide, and uranium carbide as well as uranium metal and its alloys. The various processes used to produce some of these compounds from yellow cake are outlined. Using the natural uranium, heavy water reactor by way of illustration, fabrication of fuel elements is dis- cussed and the characteristics of U02 powder required for this partic- ular fabrication are indicated. The flowsheets and equipment presently in use overseas for production of this type of U02 powder are described. Possible areas where improvements might be made to this conventional process are enumerated and some details are then given of the programme of work which has commenced at the A.A.E.C. For worker safety, mining companies are required to stop production and inspect hoist ropes. Visual inspection is generally done daily and EM inspection occurs every three to four months. During visual inspection, rope speed is generally reduced so an inspector can look for problems. In EM testing the LMA and LF traces are printed on a paper strip chart and a skilled operator interprets these traces. Mining companies only find large defects during visual inspection and are sometimes concerned about the content of EM trace information. This paper will present research outcomes that show how muck can be hoisted while performing a complete visual rope inspection at full speed. Other research results will show that digital signal processing can increase the amount of information available to the EM rope inspector. The research was funded by Inco, C-CORE, three AMIRA International sponsors and six sponsors from the Canadian Deep Mining Research Consortium (DMRC). The research will be commercialised in 2005.

Due to operational and regulatory practicalities, pit lakes will continue to be legacies of many open cut mining lease relinquishments. Unplanned or inappropriate management of these significant geographical features may lead to a short-term liability to all stakeholders during mining operations, or to ongoing liability to the local community and environment following lease relinquishment. However, the potential for pit lakes to provide benefit to companies, communities and the environment is frequently unrecognised and yet may be a vital contribution to the sustainability of the open cut mining industry. Improved remediation technologies are offering more avenues for pit lake end use than ever before, at the same time mining companies, local communities and regulatory authorities are also becoming more aware of the benefit these water resources have to offer. Sustainable pit lake management aims to better minimise short- and long-term pit lake liabilities, and yet also to maximise short- and long-term pit lake opportunities as well.

Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.
