The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia. The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical test work, feasibility studies, choice of process flow sheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management. A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. A process for the recovery of cobalt from a speiss produced at Sulphide Corporation is presented. The speiss is leached in oxygenated sulphuric acid to dissolve the metallic iron at a pH of around 4. The resultant iron (11) is subsequently oxidized in the leaching vessel and precipitates as goethite. Acid is regenerated in the precipitation allowing dissolution of further speiss. Subsequent to the conversion of most of the iron in the speiss to goethite, conditions become sufficiently oxidizing to dissolve cobalt. Cobalt is not co-precipitated under the leaching conditions, yielding a pregnant solution containing the cobalt and some iron (11). The principal advantage of such a process is the significantly lower acid consumption over that obtained by complete dissolution followed by selective precipitation. An impure product of cobalt hydroxide can be obtained from the pregnant solution by neutralization.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. Sprayed concrete has played an integral role in underground rock support for nearly a century. However, concrete is also considered to be one of the biggest environmental problems in construction and mining, largely because of the high carbon footprint of cement and aggregates production. This is driving the industry to find ways to cut concrete usage where possible. Improving sustainability by cutting concrete material consumption also reduces application time and costs. Improving concrete properties can make it possible to design thinner linings, but as awareness of safety and longer design lifetimes are driving developments in the opposite direction, it is not realistic to see this as a major factor in cutting concrete consumption. More accessible solutions are focusing on layer thickness control and minimising rebound and wastage. Digital technology and innovation offer excellent tools for improving sustainability while optimising other aspects of the spraying process at the same time. A digital layer thickness control system gives near-real-time information to the sprayer operator with full coverage of the sprayed surface. This enables the operator to achieve consistent layer thickness on the first pass, in comparison to the traditional methods of overspraying with the aim of achieving sufficient layer thickness, probe drilling after the concrete has set, and respraying at a later stage if needed. Operator competence is the single biggest variable in a successful sprayed concrete process, affecting rebound and wastage levels. Unfortunately, the learning curve to become a master sprayer is quite steep and training on a real sprayer and real concrete requires a significant amount of time and money. Training in a virtual reality (VR) environment enables operator training to be carried out in a low-risk environment and provides a way of measuring performance and assessing and certifying the operators. After the VR training period, a novice nozzle operator has the basic understanding to start working on a real sprayer, and an experienced nozzle operator can benefit from the possibility of assessing their performance.

Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

Although there are sound principles used in the world recognised methods of gas emission prediction, results based on these methods applied to several Australian longwall extractions have yielded unacceptably high discrepancies. With the development of mining in new seams and at higher rates of extraction, the need has grown for a methodical approach to predicting gas emission levels specifically for local Australian mining conditions. Such an approach is developed from results of recorded emission readings during longwall mining at Appin and Pacific Collieries over the past 6 years.

Models of ground surface elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, deformation, as well as other features are gathered together in the term Digital Terrain Model (DTM). DTMs can be generated from a wide range of technologies such as ground surveying, aerial and satellite imagery, including both active and passive sensors. Some elevation derived parameters, such as roughness and slope, can be measured directly using innovative active sensor technology and smart processing, rather than via traditional processing of elevation information. Such models are used as part of a visual interpretation process, and increasingly for computer-assisted analysis using visualisation technology. There is an ever-increasing demand for DTM information to be used in the mineral exploration and mining industry, and consistent pressure from industry to develop models of higher spatial resolution, higher accuracy, and better overall reliability, regardless of the world-wide location of interest. This presentation will survey the range of techniques available for DTM generation, including active (LIDAR, SAR interferometry and differential interferometry) and passive (optical or SAR stereo) methods, as well as interpolation methods (contour or structure interpolation), and the economic placement of these various techniques in the local and regional context. The research issue oftrue-ground elevation models and slopes is also addressed, using LIDAR and SAR polarimetry as signpost technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the strengths and limitations of new data sources that will, over the next few years, make the acquisition of elevation models of remote regions of the world inexpensive and relatively accurate.

The Dinkidi Cu-Au porphyry deposit is situated in the Caraballo Range of North Luzon, Philippines. Although comparatively small, Dinkidi has unusually high gold grades with drilling by Climax-Arimco Mining Corporation delineating a 110 Mt orebody at 1.2 g/t gold and 0.5 per cent copper. The magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of Dinkidi records a distinctive switch in mineralisation from an early orthoclase-dominated Au-rich assemblage, typical of alkaline porphyry systems, to a later quartz stockwork Au-Cu rich assemblage typical of most calc-alkaline to shoshonitic porphyry systems. The early orthoclase-dominated stage is associated with the intrusion and crystallisation of a variably-textured clinopyroxene-syenite dyke that contains high-grade (5 - 20 g/t) gold mineralisation. We consider this dyke to be a Cu-Au porphyry analogue to the pegmatites found in granitic systems. Dinkidi is hosted within the Early Miocene Didipio Igneous Complex. This alkaline igneous complex is comprised of early unmineralised gabbros (pyroxene-plagioclase cumulates), clinopyroxenites (pyroxene cummulates), diorites and monzodiorites that have been intruded by a large, weakly mineralised monzonite pluton. The Dinkidi deposit is located at the southern margin of the monzonite pluton. Mineralisation is hosted within a composite monzonite stock. Within the stock, an 800 metres by ~200 metres (plan section) elongate monzonite stock (Tunja Monzonite) predates and hosts the bulk of the Au-Cu mineralisation. This has been intruded by the thin (10 to 30 m wide), highly mineralised variably-textured magnetite- and clinopyroxene- phyric syenite pegmatite (the Balut Dyke). The youngest phases of the composite stock are leucocratic quartz-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) that grades texturally, in its core, into a post-mineralisation crystal-crowded quartz-syenite (Bufu Felsite). The late-stage Bufu Felsite is inferred to be the source of much of the Cu-Au mineralisation. The Didipio Igneous Complex has intruded a sequence of Late Oligocene alkaline andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics and overlying potassic dacitic lavas. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that the intrusions and the potassic dacite lavas in the surrounding region are co-magmatic. Five main stages of hydrothermal activity are recorded at Dinkidi. An unmineralised K-silicate (biotite-magnetite) alteration assemblage formed during the intrusion of the Tunja Monzonite stock. The diorites surrounding the stock display intense selectively pervasive biotite and magnetite alteration and are cut by an extensive network of orthoclase veins and monzonite dykes. The orthoclase-dominated assemblages of Stage Two carry substantial high-grade Au mineralisation and are associated with the intrusion of the Balut Dyke. The emplacement of this unusual dyke is associated with emplacement of pegmatitic clinopyroxene-orthoclase-magnetite¦sulphide dykes, localised orthoclase flooding along the margins of the dyke, and subsequent emplacement of an extensive orthoclase-actinolite-bornite¦chalcopyrite-fluorite stock-work, and development of widespread selectively pervasive actinolite alteration. The main stage of Au-Cu mineralisation at Dinkidi is intimately associated with the intrusion and initial crystallisation of the leuco-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) and emplacement of a quartz stockwork followed by carbonate-sulphide deposition and intense vein-related sericite and carbonate alteration assemblages. The quartz stockwork formed synchronous with the deposition of the æBugoy QuartzoliteÆ, a very coarse grained mosaic of quartz-orthoclase-perthite along the walls and top of the crystallising intrusion. Stage 3 was terminated by crystallisation of the distinctively vuggy Bufu quartz-syenite phase in the core of the intrusive, with associated antiperthite veins, and the subsequent explosive brecciation of the roof of the intrusion, forming a quartz-fragment breccia from the Bugoy Quartzolite. Retrograde metasomatism during Stage Four was intimately associated with the emplacement of extensive, late-stage carbonate, silica and zeolite veins and widespread selectively pervasive carbonate alteration. The last hydrothermal stage at Dinkidi, Stage 5, is comprised of strong selectively pervasive clay alteration and is associated with fault-related brecciation of the Dinkidi stock.

The importance of the minerals industry to any economy is clearly demonstrable. Its raw materials and products are the foundation of modem society and they have shaped the history of mankind from prehistoric times to the space age of today. However, those in the minerals industry have clearly failed to impress this fact on the consciousness of the public, bureaucrats and politicians. They have also failed to engage their dedicated opponents in a constructive debate. This is mainly because the minerals industry has been unwilling (until recently) to deal with the "soft" issues of civil society, nor understand and operate on a more emotional level. Technical professionals (as well as managers) in the future must be as comfortable in handling community concerns over social, environmental or landowner issues, as they are with logging complex drill core, designing blast patterns and separating one mineral from another. They must become caring, effective communicators and mediators. These are the new skills of a professional in the Third Millennium. These issues are outlined and discussed with some Australian data used to illustrate the point. If there is to be a future for all, then the policy makers within all levels of government (national, regional or local) must not drive essential mineral development offshore. They must address ways to support wealth creation mechanisms, particularly innovation. The minerals industry is a powerful wealth creator for ordinary citizens and an innovator. Politicians and their advisers must not .be allowed to forget this fact. If the ANZAC minerals industries do not win the emotional debate and successfully deal with the "soft" issues as well as they deal with the technical issues, there can be only a dim future ahead.

Lime and cement manufacturing has a proud history in Otago, with the earliest lime kilns appearing around 1849 at Caversham and Kaikorai in Dunedin . At Dunback or Makareao (to be precise) three well-type kilns were built by the government in 1899. In 1909 these kilns were leased to the then Milburn Lime and Cement Company. They erected a large brick Schmatolla kiln in 1909, elliptical in plan and fired by coal gas. The kiln operated up until 1944 before being left derelict. The quarry which supplied the kiln also supplied the Burnside Cement works from 1929 up until its closure in 1988. The quarry was shifted to the top of the hill in the 1950s.

This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

The Takasima Coal Mines comprise four islands near the entrance to Nagasaki Harbour, and are owned and worked by the Mitsu Bishi Company.There are several unusual features in the occurrence and working of these coal seams, the steep angle of "dip," the numerous seams of good coal separated by hundreds of feet of sedimentary rocks, the extensive faulting of the strata, and the way in which the coal is won, when so little surface is available for works, and where there is the ever present danger of subsidence of the roof and consequent flooding of the workings by the ocean. The author trusts that short notes on these few points will be of interest to members.The Islands are named respectively Hasima (Extreme Island), Nakanosima (Middle Island), Takasima (High Island), and Yokosima, and are situated about one mile from the main land.

An accurate measure of the earth's magnetic field can be made in a few seconds with the portable proton precession magnetometer. Such an instrument increases the applicability of the long successful method of magnetic prospecting for minerals. As an example of the usefulness of the proton magnetometer, a survey over volcanic rocks near Apsley (Tas.) was made.INTRODUCTIONA completely portable magnetometer whose operation is based on the free precession of polarized protons in the earth's magnetic field, is now available on the market at a price competitive with magnetometers based on the classical physical principles. The ease, accuracy, rapidity, and reliability with which measurements of the earth's total magnetic field can be made with the proton precession magnetometer, led to the try-out of the instrument in an actual field problem so as to evaluate fully the capabilities of the instrument. Such evaluation is important, because the history of magnetic prospecting has shown that whenever significantly improved instrumentation has been introduced, prospecting costs have been substantially cut and many areas in which the prospecting costs were formerly considered excessive in relation to probable returns, have become economic mineral prospects. Equipment maintenance is 30 - 50 per cent of the operating costs for a typical mining company. While this is substantial, its importance is beyond its significance as a cost heading. Modern mining requires large amounts of investment in capital infrastructure and equipment to produce a product sold at a low unit cost. To stay competitive, such a business has to focus on full realisation of its capital investment, ie sustained production at high levels. Maintenance plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Mining companies typically use a mix of breakdown or corrective maintenance, planned maintenance, and some condition-based maintenance. The share of breakdown maintenance has been coming down through more effective planned maintenance and better condition monitoring tools. Planned or preventive maintenance (PM) is playing an increasingly important role in todayÆs mining maintenance. This is the suite of inspection and repair/replacement actions performed at scheduled time intervals as part of a preplanned activity. The activities are scheduled well in advance and, usually, the current wear-state of the machine is irrelevant. For example, the replacement of a major gear may have been planned 18 months in advance; replacement is carried out when the time comes regardless of the actual condition of the gear. The PM costs are significant and include direct cost of parts and labour as well as the opportunity cost of lost production while the machine is under maintenance. It is important to identify the optimum PM effort because over-maintenance should be avoided as much as under-maintenance. A new concept called severity-based maintenance is introduced in this paper. We have seen that measuring equipment ageing in mining merely by counting the engine hours is a very imprecise way of planning and scheduling maintenance because the damage accumulated in one hour varies enormously from operator to operator and with changing pit conditions. We recommend continuous monitoring of duty on all major equipment. This is feasible without having to fit out the machine with an army of sensors because most of the physical sensors required by dutymeters are already installed and maintained as part of the existing performance monitors. While the investment is modest, the potential benefits are huge and can be grouped under three headings:Immediate benefits will come from providing operators with direct feedback on the effect of their behaviour on machine health and training them to use this feedback to correct their operating style. The equipment can operate closer to the limits of capacity, producing more without unduly sacrificing the availability by monitoring and controlling the severity of the operation, ie the duty on the machine. Longer term benefits accrue from establishing correlations between actual time to failure data and measured equipment duty and using these correlations to optimise maintenance effort as well as planning new equipment purchases and warranty conditions.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. Co-disposal of partly-dewatered mixed-plant rejects (MPR) from coal processing into spoil dumps is gaining favour amongst Australian coalmine operators in preference to conventional tailings disposal methods which require a tailings dam. Owing to their often low permeabilities and high degrees of saturation, MPR materials may be prone to the development of excess pore pressures when covered by spoil during routine dump advancement. The likelihood of dump failure will increase if these pore pressure regimes and the associated delay of shear strength development are not accounted for during waste dump design. To date however, little is known about these pore pressure regimes due to the complexities associated with their in situ measurement.This paper describes the in situ measurement of pore pressures in a cell of MPR placed within a coalmine spoil dump. Four vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) were placed within a cell that was then filled with MPR and allowed to consolidate under self-weight before advancing an adjacent tiphead across the cell. The VWPs recorded the transient pore pressures during MPR placement and dump construction, and their interpretations are described within the context of laboratory measured parameters.
