Mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems in road tunnels are constrained by the traffic envelope and the construction profile. Whilst these spatial constraints are often ælocked inÆ early in the design process, the detailed M&E design continues for some considerable time after key civil engineering issues have been resolved. Ventilation design criteria for both normal and emergency operation often involves considerable negotiation with a wide range of stakeholders. Final system performance and spatial requirements are only finally resolved when suppliers are selected following the tender process. Lighting design is dependent upon a wide range of factors including tunnel lining materials and associated colours as well as agreed maintenance regimes. Cabling systems can only be developed when the general arrangement for power distribution is agreed and a system of substation, switchrooms and equipment rooms is in place. Many other systems such as fire protection and communications facilities fill the available space beyond the traffic envelope, where physical, structural and æsight lineÆ requirements must all be accommodated. The more co-ordinated civil engineering and M&E design is and the earlier the process starts the better the outcomes for all parties.

Mineral exploration conducted over a wide area of the State during the period 1960 to 1973 has resulted in the discovery of a number of significant deposits. Base metals, particularly copper, have been of prime interest while, more recently, the search for uranium and coal have assumed import- ance. Expenditure of $27.6 million by companies during the period under re- view has located 580,000 tonnes of cop- per, 370,000 tonnes of zinc, 350,000 tonnes of lead, 24 million Kg of uran- ium oxide and 2,500 million tonnes of coal. A variety of other metals and non metallic and industrial minerals have been investigated in a diversity of geological environments.

Coal Mining in India had been confined in the past primarily to two or three coalfields. Unscientific mining has led to huge degradation of land including massive subsidence of strata and disturbances of water tables to a wide extent. This has caused problems not only in flooding of mines from surface water but also in further planning of the surface drainage for current mining activities. Now, therefore, surface hydrology and land-use potentialities of the area have been endangered inflicting severe damage to the overall environment and ecology of the area. The paper Discusses certain investigative aspects of the problems highlighted as above in one of the coalfields, and encompasses mainly the following areas : 1) Quantitative estimation of the damage already done to the natural surface drainage system. For this purpose damage to topography and drainage for the last fifty years have been made out through the aerial photographs and topographic map sheets 2) Analysis and comparison of different states of such photographs are carried through to indicate the extent of damage to the hydrological conditions inducing undesirable changes in its land-use pattern. Based on the analysis, concrete suggestions are made to restore the water drainage system which will be most suitable for future mining in the area containing high grade coal. The design and planning of the drainage system is based on the total system approach including the cost benefit analysis as well as hydrological considerations.

An improvement to cut-off grade optimisation theory based on geometallurgy has been completed. The improvement fundamentally consisted of taking into account mineralogical and textural characteristics instead of grades. These characteristics are related to the spatial variability of mineral abundance, association, particle size and liberation properties. Additionally, the improve- ment considered the spatial variability of mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties associated with mineralogy and texture. The enhanced optimisation enables estimation of the economic value of mining operations based on an optimum cut-off policy attributed to liberated and selected ore minerals.The enhanced optimisation was developed as an essential component of a joint cut-and-fill mining and mineral processing methodology based on mixed integer mathematical programming. The formulation considers static and dynamic modifying factors that vary over the projected life of mining. The objective function of the mathematical formulation consists of maximising the realistic expected economic value of concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals, whilst minimises liberated and selected gangue minerals. The optimal solution is obtained when the objective function is subject to geological, mining, processing, marketing, smelting, refining, environmental and financial constraints. The methodology accesses geometallurgical multivariate resource models, which integrate the spatial variability of mineralogical and textural characteristics and mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties.The geometallurgical process concurrently optimises stope geometries, ore reserves, mining sequences, and mining and mineral processing production based on the enhanced cut-off of liberated and selected ore minerals. In addition, the process considers additive and non-additive transfer functions associated to mutually exclusive geometallurgical spatial domains. The transfer functions also take into consideration the blending of mineralogical and textural characteristics with mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties.This contribution presents an example of cut-off grade optimisation via mineralogical and textural characteristic, and liberation and selectivity processing parameter optimisation for a spatially variable orebody.

Research and Technical Services, Department of Mines Western Australia The nine papers received for this technical session cover a very wide range of hydrological problems in various parts of the world. Three of these papers deal with hydrological predictions for new mines, while three are concerned with the prediction of water chemistry. The three remaining papers deal with gas injection as a dewatering tool, discharge formulae verification and the use of a physical model to predict subsurface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining. Hydrological problems in mine planning represent a major risk in many mining operations, booth as a potential life or equipment hazard and a major financial risk. The initial paper selected to review was therefore one by the president of a gold mining company, rather than by one of the specialist scientists, to remind us all that the main reason problems are faced and overcome in the mining industry is usually a commercial one. In one commercial undertaking, the ability to accurately assess future risk is a highly desirable planning tool and hence in mining, the ability to predict the nature and magnitude of hydrological problems is n i-an varxi imnnrfant

Hard rock TBMs are very often open machine layouts, with just a part roof shield over the front of the machine. The whole system is designed for fast face advance and the economy of the project often depends entirely on the rate of advance. Typically, hard rock conditions will demonstrate stable and good ground for a major part of the tunnel. However, short sections of crushed shear zones with clay and gouge material may cause serious time delays. Spiling rock bolting has been proven to be very efficient under such circumstances, provided the fully grouted rebar bolts can be placed in a controlled and practical manner.Environmental restrictions are becoming more and more a part of tunnel excavation projects. Even hard rock TBM tunnelling may require a strict ground water control, because of consequences on the ground surface from lowering the ground water level. Such consequences may be surface settlement, negative influence on ground water resources or damage to vegetation.Pressure injection ahead of the advancing tunnel face (in this paper named pre-injection), using microfine cement and chemical grouts, is today a proven technology. As examples can be mentioned (Garshol, 1997) about 100 km of pre-injected tunnels below Oslo City and about the same length of subsea tunnelling elsewhere in Norway. Examples from other parts of the world are also available, like below Stockholm, Sweden, the Inland Feeder project and Hollywood Metro both in Southern California.To take advantage of spiling rockbolts and pre-injection, it is an obvious prerequisite to be able to drill the necessary boreholes in the right positions and at the correct angle. In drill and blast excavation this is simple, but in TBM projects it has repeatedly turned out to be difficult. More than once owners have accepted bids containing reassurance from the contractor that the drilling method will be sorted out later. Experience shows that if ælaterÆ means after start of the TBM operation, it is often too late.

There are many physical factors that can affect the self-heating rate of coal. The presence of seam gas has often been referred to as inhibiting coal self-heating due to the limited access of oxidation sites created by the presence of the gas adsorbed on the coal pores. Similarly, the presence of bed moisture in the coal also acts as an inhibitor of oxidation by blocking access of air into the pores. Gas drainage of a coal seam prior to mining removes both gas and moisture from the seam. Bulk coal self-heating tests in a two-metre column on both gassy, as-mined and gas-drained, dried high volatile bituminous coal show that removal of gas and moisture from the coal accelerates the rate of self-heating to thermal runaway from 8.5 days to 4.25 days, from a start temperature of 30¦C, with an airflow of 0.25 L/min. The corresponding gas evolution pattern for each of these situations is different. Therefore, it is necessary to take this change in coal condition into consideration when developing a spontaneous combustion management plan.

The flotation cells used to upgrade ultrafine metallurgical coal (-250 µm) are usually poorly controlled leading to unnecessary loss of combustibles from the flotation system. This is mainly because coal flotation cells are typically controlled for process stability rather than optimisation of flotation performance. This is especially true for a flotation device commonly used in coal applications in Australia – the Jameson Cell. This then provides an opportunity to improve the flotation performance by shifting from a stabilising control strategy to a proactive optimising control strategy. For an optimising control strategy, the control system will require a means of relating and then measuring in real-time, the effect of changing operating conditions on the coal flotation performance. Hence, the major aim of this work is to propose a possible model-informed process control strategy that could be used for real-time performance optimisation. In this study, industrial site work was conducted on an industrial-scaled Jameson Cell at a Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) in Central Queensland, Australia where superficial gas velocity was controlled to six different levels. At the same time, other process variables such as froth depth and flotation feed properties were measured. The empirical models developed from this study suggested that combustible recovery is a function of superficial gas velocity, froth depth, feed solid content and feed ash content and that a peak in combustible recovery existed as a function of superficial gas velocity. This led to the development of a model-informed control strategy that aimed to maximise the combustible recovery by determining and then operating the cell at the superficial gas velocity at which the peak occurs. This peak superficial gas velocity was found to be only a function of feed solid content. Based on these findings it would seem possible to operate a Jameson cell at peak performance by online measurement of feed solid content, prediction of the optimum superficial gas velocity and stabilising control to maintain operation at that superficial gas velocity set point. The development of this modelinformed control strategy can serve as a basis for the development of a more sophisticated modelpredictive control (MPC) system. However, more work will need to be done to improve the predictivity of the combustible recovery model by measuring and modelling performance over a wider range of operating conditions.

With increasing demand for more efficient production from the underground coal mines in the Southern Coalfields- of New South Wales, their design and operational aspects are constantly being reviewed and improved. One key area in such pursuits is the reliable design of stable and yielding pillars. The current designs of pillars based mostly on experience leads to unnecessary sterilisation of coal or strata control problems. To explore such mine design problems, computer based modelling is increasingly being applied. In the study described in this paper, the object was to determine the particular width of pillars separating three roadways in a panel at which the pillars yielded completely and their loads largely transferred to the unmined coal at the flanks of the panel. This was approached through a computer simulation of the behaviour of the strata around a panel, in which the three roadways were separated by pillars of progressively decreasing width. A computer program called FLAC based on the finite difference method was used to simulate the relevant strata behaviour in vertical sections. The appropriate in situ values of the deformability parameters relating to the coal seam, roof and floor were determined from the back analysis of some displacement measurements in such a panel. The process involved successive modelling of a vertical section through such a panel,starting with realistic values of the parameters and varying them until the measured and the modelled displacements agreed closely. Based on the results of the numerical modelling, the width of a yielding pillar for the given conditions is Suggested.

The rate of development achieved using this technology is improved by modifications to this technology using additional equipment such as surge cars or decreasing roof bolting time.Development rates achieved with this technology compare with developing technologies such as high capacity continuous miners, continuous transportation and simultaneous cutting and bolting systems such as the Kemcol Beaver. Pillar dimensions have an effect on the rate of development.'

This paper reflects on the author’s experience working in site-based technical and management roles over a 29 year period, and the past 12 years in internal and external consulting roles. It discusses the author’s experiences and observations of operations management, and the significant value of the technical specialist’s role in providing management with information on what to base tactical decisions, which may or may not be part of a defined strategy.The landscape of mine management changes with the cyclical nature of commodity prices driving operating and capital prudence, as operations change their focus from expansion and growth to staying in the game. The role of the mine manager and management team in navigating through these changing times, attitudes and stages of the project life can influence the success or otherwise of many projects.Technical knowledge is one of the key drivers in realising or destroying the value of a project or operation. As managers focus on people management, management systems and processes, recognising and understanding value in underlying technical knowledge, and getting back to the fundamentals/basics, can be overlooked. In reaction to the fluctuating commodity cycle, managers implement changes through optimisation, fast tracking or parallel streaming, expansion projects and changes in the application of technology. These responses occur against the background of changes in the appetite for risk, acceptance of project uncertainty and changes in personnel which result in a loss of knowledge and experience – often at critical times.This paper shares the author’s experiences and lessons learnt in dealing with and observing these issues. IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Nova Operation (Nova) is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). Discovered by Sirius Resources NL (Sirius) in 2012 and acquired by IGO in 2015, the Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) occurs within the Fraser Zone of the AlbanyFraser Orogen. Nova-Bollinger is a complex nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) magmatic intrusive sulfide deposit, which is characterised by high-grade folded and undulating breccia lodes that host the bulk of the payable metals. Significant sulfide mineralisation is also found in several magmatic intrusive styles including net-textured, disseminated and blebby styles. A smaller but material volume of sulfides has also been remobilised into the deposit’s footwall rocks as ‘stringer’ bands in metasediments, or as discrete massive sulfide lenses. When interpolating Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) block grades in the presence of locally varying grade connectivity trends, such as folds or undulations, the sample search neighbourhood, which is used to identify the composites subset that is used for each block estimate, should be oriented to match the local trends. In theory, the most robust method of estimation where locally varying angles (LVAs) are applied to search neighbourhoods, are techniques where the composites and the blocks to be estimated are transformed to an unfolded coordinate system (UCS). However, UCS methods can be tedious to implement and require subjective decisions to be made that cannot always be fully defended. An alternative LVA method commonly used in the industry is dynamic anisotropy (DA), which is much simpler to implement and is often assumed (but not that often demonstrated) to result in similar results to UCS-style estimation. In 2018, Nova’s Mine Geology team (MGT) estimated the grades and density of the Nova-Bollinger MRE using the UCS approach. For the 2020 MRE update, Nova’s MGT tested and compared the USC grade interpolation method with the DA approach. As applied to the Nova-Bollinger’s 2020 MRE, the comparison, advantages and disadvantages of the two estimation methods are the subject of this paper

The evaluation of historical goldfields has been common over the past 15 years, reflecting changing economic conditions, improvements in knowledge and technology and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins, which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold, have variable geometry and architecture and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation, since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. Mine records include documents such as plans, sections, reports, news cuttings, production tabulations, etc. A major advantage for the modern explorer is the capability of computer modelling to display this data in 3D. Historical records can give the explorer substantial information on various deposit characteristics, not least grade and geological continuity, geometry and architecture, mineralogy, metallurgical properties, bulk density and ground conditions. From an evaluation perspective, historical records can be used to support a Mineral Resource estimate, though its application will depend upon the quality and quantity of the data and judgement of the Competent Person. Effectively used, historical records can reduce geological uncertainty and focus evaluation efforts û thus reducing project risk.

The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. In mining, grade control generally focuses on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block models with little or no attention given to how the materials are being excavated from the ground. In the process of loading trucks, the underlying variability of the individual bucket load will determine the variability of truck payload. Hence, accurate material movement demands a good knowledge of the excavation process and the buckets’ interaction with the environment. However, equipment frequently goes into off-nominal states due to unexpected delays, disturbances or faults. The large amount of such disturbances causes information loss that reduces the statistical power and biases estimates, leading to increased uncertainty in the production. A reliable method that inferences the missing knowledge about the interaction between the machine and the environment from the available data sources, is vital to accurately model the material movement. In this study, a twostep method was implemented that performed unsupervised clustering and then predicted the missing information. The first method is Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) based spatial clustering which divides the diggers’ and buckets’ positional data into connected loading segments. Clear patterns of segmented bucket dig positions were observed. The second model utilised Gaussian process regression which was trained with the clustered data and the model was then used to infer the mean locations of the test clusters. Bucket dig locations were then simulated at the inferred mean locations for different durations and compared against the known bucket dig locations. This method was tested at an open pit mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in inferencing the missing information of bucket-environment interactions and therefore enables miners to continuously track the material movement.

The metal production industry is a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions due to the use of fossil fuels such as coal and coke. To mitigate these emissions and meet climate goals, innovative and sustainable technologies are required. Molten salt electrolysis is a promising technology that directly produces metals from their precursor sulfides or oxides using electricity. When combined with renewable electricity and an inert anode, the electrolysis process can be carbon neutral. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale studies on the electrolytic reduction of metal oxides and sulfides in molten salts. The first study focuses on the electrolytic reduction of chalcopyrite in molten NaCl-KCl salt. The results demonstrate that in situ separation of copper, iron, and sulfur is possible, enabling the extraction of all valuable elements without CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the findings underscore the capability to eliminate impurities like zinc, antimony, arsenic, and mercury from the electrolysis product. The second study investigates the electrolytic reduction of pure/synthetic chemicals of wüstite, hematite, and magnetite, as well as a magnetite-type iron ore in molten NaOH salt. The findings reveal a stepwise reduction of iron oxides from high valence to low valence, ultimately leading to the production of metallic iron electrolytically. Notably, this study underscores the challenges associated with the selection of an economically viable and durable inert anode material for efficient oxygen generation. These results indicate that molten salt electrolysis provides a sustainable and green route for base metal production. The use of this technology has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the metal production industry, contributing to achieving climate goals.

When a major mineral find has been announced the general perception is that a battle between Aborigines and the mining company involved will inevitably occur.It is a fact that many miners in the past have not had a good relationship with Aborigines because of their indifferent attitudes towards them. They saw no common future and went their particular way. However, attitudes have changed significantly since Noonkanbah and both miners and Aborigines are seeking common ground in order to achieve mutual benefits from the establishment of a mine on or near Aboriginal land. There are many obstacles that both miners and Aborigines need to overcome inordertofindthiscommongroundtoachieveawin/win situation. The obstacles can be found in entrenched ideas and practices which need overhauling, not the least of which emanate from government policy and requirements.Without going into specifics, the Noonkanbah incident during the 1970's where Aborigines and their supporters confronted miners who were ordered by the Western Australian governmentto drill on Aboriginal land, polarized Aborigines and miners. Since this incident, many Aborigines, particularly those in the cities, have had the attitude that mining and Aboriginal culture are in direct conflict. Aboriginal opinion is generally shaped in the larger cities through mass media coverage of the opinions of urban Aborigines and their supporters. Through no fault of their own, these Aborigines were removedfromthe land of their ancestors and have notlived atraditional Aboriginal life-style for a number of generations and most have little knowledge of, nor have had involvement in, traditional Aboriginal lore and culture. For the most part these people live in awestern life-style and few still know their language. They generally have high profiles, often giving viewpoints that are wrongly considered "Aboriginal" and supposedly representing all Aborigines. This group is very different with their thought processes and values from those Aborigines who live on their own traditional lands with a traditional life-style, and practise their age old ceremonies. Their tribal values are based in their relationship with the land, expressed through complex religious ceremonial rites of song, dance and legend. Today this group is very much diminished in numbers but nevertheless in the region of the Gulf of Carpentaria there is a high proportion ofpeople who practise their lore, speak their own languages and pass on traditions to their children. It is well documented in the history of Australia that Aborigines have been decimated in numbers and whole tribes have been wiped out. Certainly in this region the experience has been no different.

A 'research model' can be used to investigate cause and effect relations and generally improve the understanding of extractive metallurgical processes. As such, it is a useful research technique which complements the traditional methods of laboratory and plant measurement. The procedure of model development is iterative and involves observation of the process, hypothesis of phenomena, prediction using mathematical descriptions of the phenomena and comparison of predictions with real-world measurements. Lack of agreement of predictions with real-world measurements usually indicates an inadequacy in the hypotheses and necessitates revision. Experimentation has an integral role in the process of model development but its emphasis is different from that when experimentation alone is used to study processes. Since a process as a whole is investigated by using a model, experimentation is restricted to the study of specific phenomena to aid the description of these in the model, to the characterisation of the raw materials (for initial values of the model parameters) and to the measurement of physical and chemical constants required in the model equations. Similarly, plant measurements are made for the purpose of comparison with the model predictions not to establish cause and effect relations. This makes plant experimentation much simpler and cheaper'since most measurements-can be taken during normal operation.
