It has been fairly firmly established (Fisher, N. H., 1945) that the fineness of the gold in any ore deposit varies with the depth from the surface at which the deposit was formed, and, as a corollary to this, that it is dependent upon the temperature and pressure at the time of deposition. This relationship is such that, under certain conditions, the gold fineness, taken into consideration with other recognised criteria, furnishes a very sensitive and reliable guide to the relative temperature of ore formation, at least within the epithermal and the upper part of the mesothermal range.Definition of Fineness.The fineness of gold is calculated in parts per thousand and refers to the proportion of gold present in the naturally occurring metal in the lode, which is actually a gold-silver alloy, containing usually about 10 parts per thousand of base metal and up to 500 parts perthousand of silver. A clear distinction should be made between fineness and gold-silver ratio. The latter refers to the total gold and silver in the lode as determined by assay and is usually expressed as the ratio Au:Ag. Only in deposits where other silver-bearingminerals are entirely absent, which occurs comparatively rarely, can the gold-silver ratio be used as a measure of gold fineness and, in many cases, the two have no relationship. For instance, in the Edie Creek area in New Guinea, the lodes formed under shallow epithermal conditions all carry gold 500 to 550 fine, although the gold-silver ratio ranges from 1:100 to 1:1, in places in adjacent lodes.Determination of Gold Fineness.The fineness of lode gold can be determined only after it has been separated from all other minerals. Amalgamation recovers gold fairly cleanly - unless native silver is present - and the fineness of amalgam bullion is generally a reliable indication of the correct fineness of the gold. If the use of plates is involved, the bullion may be adulterated, but the effect of any copper, or other metal, that may have been introduced can be cancelled by assuming that the gold and silver shouJrl add up to about 990 fine, or by ignoring the base metal content altogether, which varies little in naturally-occurring gold, and in calculating for comparison purposes all fineness figures to the basis Au + Ag = 1,000.The composition of bullion obtained from cyanidation is generally intermediate between the true gold fineness and the total gold-silver proportion as determined by assay of mine or mill-head samples of Cyanide solution dissolves other silver-bearing minerals and the fineness of the resulting bullion is thereby lowered. Consequently, the fineness of cyanide bullion rarely corresponds to the true gold fineness and is useless for diagnostic purposes, although it is a common fallacy to refer to the fineness of cyanide bullion as the fineness of the gold.

Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

The principal dirnensions of the chimney were fixed as follows: Height from formation to coping, 328 ft. 8 in.; inside diameter concrete shell, 13 ft. Gin.; inside diameter of the 4~-in. brick lining. 11 ft. (j in. ; shell thickness above flue inlet at a point 39 ft. above formation, 1 ft. 8in.; shell thickness at coping, 6 in. That is, the inside of chimney is cylindrical, wldst the outside is gradually stepped inwards with of 1 in. and less until the shell is 6 in. thick only at the top. With these dimensions in mind, it will be seen that some close thought was necessary to ensure a satisfactory of fonn which could be kept rigid and plumb to a height and at the same time provide safe working conditions for the labourers employed.FOUNDATIONSThe spread base of the chimney is 45 ft. in diameter, and foundations were carried down to a depth of 8 ft. 6 in. below natural surface into good hard clay which was known to be the best foundation obtainable in the vicinity being capable of withstanding, when dry, a load of 3 tons to 4 tons per square foot, whereas dead load is 1A tons per square foot and the maximum load expeeted under the most severe wind condition is 2 tons per square foot to ensure the foundation being kept dry and unaffected by ground water, the site was surrounded by a ring drain at a distance of six feet from edge of concrete foundation and at a minimum depth of one foot below bottom of concrete. Open-jointed pipes were laid in the bottom ofthe drain and graded to a pipe drain with outfall clear of the site.

The continuously growing coal mining industry of India presently includes shovel dumper combinations in open cast mines, sometimes with dragline mining of overburden, together with the whole range of longwall and bord and pillar underground mining, continuously undergoing fuller mechanisation. This transition from "low tech" to "high tech" systems is now monitored for reliability and provides bases for comparisons of downtime relative to age and make of equipment, whether imported or indigenous, including spare parts, as well as frequencies of particular failures to allow analysis and progressive improvement. Varying geologies complicate technology and equipment requirements, especially in underground mine,s with minimal technological standardisation, but now, reliability in South Eastern Coalfields Limited has been given more importance and superior technological back-up is being developed.

The automated geology interpretation (AGI) tool has been developed in BHP Billiton to automate stratigraphy logging of drill holes, using any available quantitative data sets. At present, AGI is set-up to utilise geochemistry and mineralogy from infrared spectroscopic data to predict stratigraphy. Once the AGI tool is calibrated, results show that the tool is capable of automatically defining stratigraphy across all of the deposit types, encountered by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in the north-west of Western Australia. Accuracy of AGI at predicting stratigraphy is on average better than 75 per cent, with average accuracies exceeding 85 per cent for some deposit types. The AGI tool can deliver fast, accurate, consistent and objective geological interpretations.AGI is currently being implemented in BHP Billiton Iron Ore Exploration to streamline the drill hole logging process and allow geologists to spend less time defining stratigraphy at the drill hole level and more time investigating stratigraphy in 3D. THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan (Queensland) ore body presents problems other than those only of mining. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and fromhighly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

The overburden slusher (OS) is proposed as a stripping tool that is expected to find application in overburden stripping operations including open cut coal and oil shale mines. OS is expected to combat the effects of increasing depth on the productivity of conventional dragline stripping.Although previously developed stripping techniques have included the use of drag scrapers the OS is sufficiently different as to constitute a new stripping method.A study undertaken at the University of Queensland during 1985 is believed to be the first major study on the use of the OS and preliminary economic results are very encouraging. It appears that the OS has the capacity to remove overburden at a cheaper unit cost than the equivalent powered dragline stripping machine at any comparable depth of overburden. The OS is not adversely affected by increasing stripping depth to the same extent as a dragline. In addition, the action of the OS machine allows for the lowering of spoil face angles, thereby reducing spoil slope stability problems encountered in deep open cut strip mines.

This paper describes a methodology for the design of mine pillars at the McArthur River Mine. The pillar strength is calculated using a method that accounts for confinement, pillar geometry and intact rock properties. The average pillar stress was calculated using in situ measurements of vertical stresses at shallow depth and the tributary area method in conjunction with numerical modelling. Observations of pillar behaviour indicate that an existing pillar stability graph may be slightly conservative and further adjustments for the local rockmass conditions are needed. The results to-date indicate that all mine pillars are stable for a range of mining geometries at McArthur River Mine.

THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. Besides, changes as a rule do not take place suddenly, so old hands can generally find work at their particular calling 'till nature requires them to retire. Valuers will often intuitively express the probability that property value will exceed a certain amount . . . 'I think the chances that the value will exceed $50 million are excellent. The chances that they will exceed $80 million are poor'. This paper shows how it is possible to combine the uncertainties of the value of several key items to provide an estimate of the probability of a certain overall value being achieved. The valuation of a large copper/gold deposit was naturally influenced by uncertainties in the base assumptions of costs and metal prices. Potential acquisition of the property through share purchase raised the issue of what was a reasonable intrinsic value for the shares. Market considerations could be used to appropriately adjust the intrinsic value. After a range of possible metal prices and operating costs were determined, estimates were made of their probable distributions. By combining these probabilities in a random selection, a range of property values was calculated. Each value had its respective probability of occurrence. This allowed a most likely value of shares to be calculated. This paper demonstrates how the valuer's intuition is complemented by numerical analysis.

In an industry that is data-hungry and increasingly international in its outlook, the role of the New Zealand Government in facilitating exploration and mining activity here presents unique challenges. All things being equal, the Regime itself should result in æefficient outcomesÆ, however central to this rational economic tenet are the assumptions that the regime is in keeping with the times, other legislation works in tandem with it, and that those who administer the regime have the knowledge and experience to apply the rules wisely. Following the Crown Minerals review in late 2003, a shift in emphasis from Crown Minerals æmanaging the ActÆ towards proactively æmanaging the mineral estateÆ for greater benefit for all New Zealanders means that these assumptions are being increasingly challenged and addressed through a variety of initiatives. These include improved access to relevant data sets, minimisation of red tape and compliance costs, increasing emphasis on permit holder compliance with work programme obligations, changes to the Minerals Programme and regulations, closer collaboration with and representation to other government departments and councils, and additional recruitment of industry-experienced staff. This presentation will highlight aspects of these initiatives, and examine how they will collectively contribute to facilitating future exploration and mining activity in New Zealand.

The chemistry of acidic mine drainage discharging from flooded coal mines is commonly reported to improve with time after flooding. This investigation describes a 18-year dataset of post-flooding water chemistry for a below-drainage underground coal mine within the northern Pittsburgh coal basin (Pennsylvania, USA). The Montour mine is a 5650-hectare below-drainage coal mine of maximum 260 metres depth. Montour was closed in 1980 and flooded to within 38 metres of land surface within 4.8 years. Pumping averaging 210 L/s was then employed to maintain water levels at this elevation. The flooded proportion of the mine (by volume) at full flooding was 56 per cent. The shaft where water was pumped from Montour for water control is located about 70 per cent of the distance between the mine water table and the back of the mine ù that is, it is close to the back of the mine. The residence time (total water volume at flooding divided by pumping rate for control) is estimated at 5.6 years. Time series of chemical analyses show three phases of chemical behavior in post-flooding discharge. In Phase I (zero to two years after flooding), iron concentrations were high and reached their maximum (1100 mg/L). In Phase II (two to four years after flooding), a transition was begun to alkaline conditions, with decline in iron and other solutes. In Phase III (>4 years), net alkaline conditions began, with iron concentrations declining exponentially to 50 per cent of mined volume. This attainment of net alkalinity in this case may have also depended on abundant calcite in overburden extended up to 30 m above the mine floor.

The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

The history of mining is rightly proud of its achievements in improving productivity and cost improvements over the years. No matter what measure is used, tonnes per manhour, cost per tonne, etc vast improvements have been made over the last hundred years. In fact over the last ten years in Australian coal mines raw coal output per employee has increased by 60 per cent. When one examines why these improvements have taken place the principal reasons have been technological advancement in mining equipment, excavator and dump truck capacity increases, longwall and continuous miners continually improving in reliability and size. Of course all these improvements are correlated to an increase in capital cost. Even with the above-mentioned advances the pressure for increased performance is as strong as ever. The international mining and mineral-processing sector is currently operating in a recessive market with some traditional commodities, eg gold trading at 20 year lows. During recessive times senior management will demand greater returns on capital employed: the obvious choices being reducing costs or increasing throughput. In addition, head office environments will often place a capital freeze on operational management so the opportunity to take advantage of technological change is not available. The challenge is, therefore, to increase throughput and cut costs without the need for capital. The answer is to optimise the existing labour and plant. If done systematically a result in productivity improvement, in our experience, as high as 45 per cent can be achieved with the average across South East Asia and Australasia being 21 - 23 per cent. The intention of this paper is to present a systematic approach to labour and machine utilisation thereby gaining the greatest possible return on the existing capital base.

Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

The common notion that the Box Hole Bore mineralization represents a variant of the Mississippi Valley type, has not been supported by the present investigation. Most of the common characteristics of Mississippi Valley type, namely 1. saturated saline brines; 2. low temperature domain; 3. mineralization in intraformational breccias and collapsed anticlinal structures; 4. hydrocarbon-rich or foetid carbonates, and 5. very simple geochemistry seem not to be applicable. The Box Hole Bore mineralization features: 1. moderately saline brines (18% NaCl); 2. very high temperature (495¦-520¦C) and low density brines, of critical vapour:water ratio and low pressure of formation (700 bars); 3. mineralization confined by faults and ex- tending laterally into carbonates of high pore volume such as stromatolitic dolo- mites; 4. ore environment characterized by oxidizing conditions, such as ferruginous carbonate and silica sands of high energy environment (heavy mineral banding) and 5. more complex geochemistry than is normal for Mississippi Valley type deposits (copper sulphosalts, and appreciable silver content). Additionally, the ore has un- usual textures formed by the replacement of carbonates and barite by large idiomorphic galena crystals. The pressure and temperature domains of the Box Hole Bore mineralization indicate post- Devonian emplacement and local high heat flow, possibly related to the Alice Springs Orogeny. Because of high lead and zinc trace element con- tents (100-600 ppm) of the carbonates, even out- side mineralized areas, it is possible that the mineralizing fluids have derived their metal con- tent from a local source, possibly aided by evap- oritic concentrations of the tidal to supratidal sequences. The new model for Box Hole Bore gives treater importance to the confining faults.

Situated in the Greymouth Coalfield, the Mt Davy Block contains a significant resource of high quality bituminous coal suitable for use in metallurgical coking coal blends. The coal, which is all low sulphur, is seen as a complementary deposit to export coking coal at Stockton Mine.   Previous drilling by State Coal Mines (1948 - 1953) and Japanese interests (1970's) have been supplemented by Coal New Zealand drilling (1992 - 1993) and surface mapping. A mining feasibility study was completed in late 1993 and approval gained for the driveage of an exploratory tunnel to the target seam.   Following construction of surface facilities, tunnel driveage on a 1:5 decline commenced from Rewanui in May 1995 and to date about half the required length has been driven. When the seam is intersected a comprehensive geotechnical testing programme will be undertaken to assess the in-situ mining conditions. It is expected that the results will confirm the assumptions made in the feasibility study.   The Mt Davy Mine, at depths of 500 - 700 metres, will be the deepest underground coal mine ever inNew Zealand and in-situ stresses (orientation and magnitude) will be important considerations for mining engineering. The coal has a high gas content and suitable techniques for gas control and prevention/mitigation of coal outbursts will be necessary.   Mine development is scheduled to commence in mid 1998 and an annual production level of 500 000 tonnes is forecast. The coal seams will be developed by continuous miner and coal extraction will be by hydraulic monitor. Coal will be pumped to the surface and from Rewanui transported five kilometres to Dunollie either by truck or slurry pipeline. At Dunollie a coal dewatering plant, coal stockpile and rail loadout will be constructed.
